RESUMEN

Visualization of three-dimensional (3D) morphological changes in the subcellular structures of a biological specimen is a major challenge in life science. Here, we present an integrated chip-based optical nanoscopy combined with quantitative phase microscopy (QPM) to obtain 3D morphology of liver sinusoidal endothelial cells (LSEC). LSEC have unique morphology with small nanopores (50-300 nm in diameter) in the plasma membrane, called fenestrations. The fenestrations are grouped in discrete clusters, which are around 100 to 200 nm thick. Thus, imaging and quantification of fenestrations and sieve plate thickness require resolution and sensitivity of sub-100 nm along both the lateral and the axial directions, respectively. In chip-based nanoscopy, the optical waveguides are used both for hosting and illuminating the sample. The fluorescence signal is captured by an upright microscope, which is converted into a Linnik-type interferometer to sequentially acquire both superresolved images and phase information of the sample. The multimodal microscope provided an estimate of the fenestration diameter of 119 ± 53 nm and average thickness of the sieve plates of 136.6 ± 42.4 nm, assuming the constant refractive index of cell membrane to be 1.38. Further, LSEC were treated with cytochalasin B to demonstrate the possibility of precise detection in the cell height. The mean phase value of the fenestrated area in normal and treated cells was found to be 161 ± 50 mrad and 109 ± 49 mrad, respectively. The proposed multimodal technique offers nanoscale visualization of both the lateral size and the thickness map, which would be of broader interest in the fields of cell biology and bioimaging.

The electronic stopping power of palladium (Pd) for protons is investigated based on time-dependent density functional theory combined with Ehrenfest molecular dynamics simulations. The electronic stopping power of Pd with explicitly considering inner electrons for protons is calculated and the excitation mechanism for the inner electrons of Pd is revealed. The velocity proportionality of the low-energy stopping power of Pd is reproduced. Our study verified that the inner electron excitation contributes significantly to the electronic stopping power of Pd in the high energy range, which is strongly dependent on the impact parameter. The electronic stopping power obtained from the off-channeling geometry is in quantitative agreement with the experimental data in a wide velocity range, and the discrepancy around the stopping maximum is further reduced by considering the relativistic correction on the binding energy of inner electrons. The velocity dependence of the mean steady-state charge of protons is quantified, and the results showed that the participation of 4p-electrons reduces the mean steady-state charge of protons, and consequently decreases the electronic stopping power of Pd in the low energy range.

The effects of oenothein B(OEB) on the proliferation, apoptosis, invasion, and migration of breast cancer MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231 cells were investigated by cell culture in vitro, network pharmacology, and molecular docking. In vitro cell experiments revealed that OEB inhibited the proliferation and colony formation ability, and promoted the apoptosis and formation of apoptotic bodies in breast cancer cells, as well as inhibited the invasion and migration of breast cancer cells. The targets of OEB were obtained using SwissTargetPrediction database and breast cancer targets were obtained from GeneCards. The targets of OEB and breast cancer were entered separately in Venny 2.1 software to obtain the Venn diagram of common targets of OEB and breast cancer. The common targets of OEB and breast cancer were input into STRING database to construct a protein-protein interaction(PPI) network, which was entered into Cytoscape 3.7.2 software for network topology analysis. Key targets were screened according to protein association strength, and analyzed for KEGG pathway enrichment. Molecular docking of OEB to key targets using AutoDock software revealed that OEB stably bound to the active pocket of P53, while OEB promoted the expression of P53 protein. MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231 cell viability and migration ability increased after silencing P53, and this change was reversed after treatment with OEB. Therefore, this study showed that OEB inhibited the proliferation, migration, and invasion of breast cancer MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231 cells, and promoted the apoptosis of breast cancer MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231 cells, which may be related to the targeted regulation of P53.

Chinese medicinal resources are the material basis for the survival and development of traditional Chinese medicine(TCM)and the sustainable development of Chinese medicinal resources is also an important project for the modernization of TCM in China. With the increasing demand for Chinese medicinal resources in China, over-exploitation has destroyed Chinese medicinal resources, resulting in a shortage of many natural medicinal resources in China and making the sustainable development of TCM in trouble. The introduced new foreign medicinal resources have become effective supplement and replacement for Chinese medicinal resources to some extent. However, the development and utilization of new foreign medicinal resources in China are different. To fully understand the development of new foreign medicinal resources in China, this paper, taking 43 new foreign medicinal resources such as Acacia nilotica as objects, sorted out the introduction forms and policies of new foreign medicinal resources, overviewed its current development status in China, summarized the application experience of new foreign medicinal resources in the place of origin, as well as the research progress and problems of new foreign medicinal resources in China and abroad, and analyzed the research situation, which can enrich Chinese medicinal resources and other uses, promote the sustainable development of Chinese medicinal resources, and provide ideas for further development and research of new foreign medicinal resources.

BACKGROUND As a novel pathophysiological characteristic of obstructive sleep apnea, intermittent hypoxia (IH) contributes to human renal tubular epithelial cells impairment. The underlying pathological mechanisms remain unrevealed. The present study aimed to evaluate the influence of Bcl-2 19-kDa interacting protein 3 (BNIP3)-mediated mitophagy on IH-induced renal tubular epithelial cell impairment. MATERIAL AND METHODS Human kidney proximal tubular (HK-2) cells were exposed to IH condition. IH cycles were as follows: 21% oxygen for 25 min, 21% descended to 1% for 35 min, 1% oxygen sustaining for 35 min, and 1% ascended to 21% for 25 min. The IH exposure lasted 24 h with 12 cycles of hypoxia and re-oxygenation. Both the siBNIP3 and BNIP3 vector were transfected to cells. Cell viability and apoptosis, mitochondrial morphology and function, and mitophagy were detected by cell counting kit-8, flow cytometry and TUNEL staining, transmission electron microscopy, western blotting, and immunofluorescence, respectively. RESULTS In the IH-induced HK-2 cells, inhibition of BNIP3 further aggravated mitochondrial structure damage, and decreased mitophagy level, leading to increased cell apoptosis and decreased cell viability. While overexpression of BNIP3 enhanced mitophagy, which protected mitochondrial structure, it can decrease cell death in HK-2 cells exposed to IH. CONCLUSIONS The present study showed that BNIP3-mediated mitophagy plays a protective role against IH-induced renal tubular epithelial cell impairment.

We investigate the nonequilibrium current noise spectrum of single impurity Anderson model quantum dot systems on the basis of the accurate dissipation equation of motion evaluations. By comparing between the equilibrium and nonequilibrium cases and between the non-Kondo and Kondo regimes, we identify the current noise spectrum of the nonequilibrium Kondo features that actually appear in the entire region of ω ∈ [-eV, eV]. It is well known that the primary Kondo characteristics at ω = ±eV = ±(µL - µR) display asymmetrical upturns and remarkable peaks in S(ω) and dS(ω)/dω, respectively. These features are originated from the Rabi interference of the transport current dynamics, with the Kondo oscillation frequency of |eV|. Moreover, we also identify the minor but very distinguishable inflections, crossing over from ω = -eV to ω = +eV. This uncovered feature would be related to the interference between two Kondo resonance channels.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the significance of the resistance to polymyxin resistance of the extensively drug resistant Acinetobacter baumannii (XDRAB) lipopolysaccharide (LPS) lpx A, lpx C, lpx D and to screen appropriate combination therapy. METHODS: In the past two years, 72 XDRAB in the secretions of our patients were selected as the research object. According to the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of the XDRAB strain on polymyxin, they were included in the drug resistance group and the sensitive group. The gene sequences of strains lpx A, lpx C, lpx D were compared with the standard strains to analyze gene mutations and compared the mutation rates in the drug resistant group and the sensitive group. The efficacy of the combination drugs was evaluated by microcheckerboard dilution method, including polymyxin+imipenem group, polymyxin+meropenem group, polymyxin+cefoperazone/sulbactam group, polymyxin+levofloxacin group, and polymyxin+fosfomycin group. Calculated the fractional inhibitory concentration (FIC) index of the combined medication regimen and compared the percentage of strains that exhibited synergistic, additive, irrelevant, and antagonistic effects. RESULTS: Tentyone were in the drug resistant group, accounting for 21 (29.17%,) and 51 were in the sensitive group, accounting for 70.83%. Some strains had mutations in lpx A, lpx C, lpx D genes. The mutation rate in the drug resistant group was 90.48%, which was significantly higher than 11.76% in the sensitive group, the difference was statistically significant ( P<0.05). The combined drug sensitivity test showed, compared with the polymyxin+fosfomycin group, the mycotin+fosfomycin group had a higher percentage of strains with synergistic FIC index in the polymyxin+imipenem group, the difference was statistically significant ( P<0.01). CONCLUSION: XDRAB is resistant to polymyxin, which is related to mutations in LPS lipid A biosynthesis genes lpx A, lpx C, lpx D. Clinical treatment should adopt a combination of polymyxin+imipenem/meropenem and other drug combination to reduce the secondary infection of drug resistant bacteria.

PURPOSE: Epidemiologic findings are inconsistent regarding the association between attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) medication exposure and suicide attempt in individuals with ADHD. METHODS: A systematic literature search of PubMed, Embase and Cochrane Library up to February 2020 was performed. A meta-analysis was conducted for outcomes in which a summary risk ratio (RR) was calculated when taking heterogeneity into account. RESULTS: Both population-level and within-individual analyzes showed that ADHD medication was associated with lower odds of suicide attempts (RR = 0.76, 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.58-1.00; P = .049 and RR = 0.69; 95% CI, 0.49-0.97; P = .049, respectively). However, the association only existed for participants who were treated with stimulants (RR = 0.72; 95% CI, 0.53-0.99; P = .042 on population-level analysis and RR = 0.75; 95% CI, 0.66-0.84; P < .001 on within-individual analysis). Furthermore, a lower risk of suicide attempts was not observed in subjects who took ADHD medication for 1 to 90 days (RR = 0.91; 95% CI, 0.74-1.13; P = .416 on within-individual analysis). CONCLUSION: The results indicate that non-stimulant treatment is not associated with a higher risk of suicide attempt, but stimulant treatment is associated with a lower risk of suicide attempt.

BACKGROUND: A number of studies have explored the association between depression and ghrelin, leptin, and cortisol; further, postprandial C-peptide levels have a therapeutic effect on type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). However, the relationship between C-peptide and depression in patients with diabetes, remains unclear. The aim of this study was to explore the association between depression and ghrelin, leptin, cortisol, and C-peptide in patients with diabetes. METHODS: We enrolled 50 adults without T2DM, 77 non-depressed adults with T2DM (free of Axis-I psychiatric disorders as assessed using the Mental Illness Needs Index (MINI), Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9 score ≤ 4)) and 59 patients with T2DM and depression (PHQ-9 ≥ 7 and positive by the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-5). The age range of the participants was 45-59 years of age. We compared the above three groups and explored the association between ghrelin, leptin, cortisol, C-peptide, and depression in patients with diabetes. A post-hoc power-analysis was finished. RESULTS: Compared with the non-depression T2DM group, the depression T2DM group had significantly higher blood glucose fluctuations. Further, compared with the non-depression T2DM and non-diabetic groups, the depression T2DM group had significantly lower levels of post-meal 2-h C-peptide and elevated evening cortisol (p < 0.01). Regression analysis revealed a significant negative correlation between depression severity and 2-h postprandial C-peptide in patients with diabetes (p < 0.01) and a significant positive correlation with midnight cortisol levels (p < 0.01). A post hoc power analysis showed that we had an adequate sample size and met the minimum requirement to attain 80% power. A post hoc power calculation also demonstrated that this study basically achieved power of 80% at 5% alpha level. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings indicate a correlation of low fasting levels of 2-h C-peptide as well as higher midnight cortisol levels with higher depression severity in middle-aged patients with T2DM.

Fenestrations are pores within liver sinusoidal endothelial cells (LSECs) that enable the transfer of substrates (particularly insulin and lipoproteins) between blood and hepatocytes. With increasing age, there are marked reductions in fenestrations, referred to as pseudocapillarization. Currently, fenestrations are thought to be regulated by vascular endothelial growth factor and nitric oxide (NO) pathways promoting remodeling of the actin cytoskeleton and cell membrane lipid rafts. We investigated the effects of drugs that act on these pathways on fenestrations in old (18-24 mo) and young mice (3-4 mo). Isolated LSECs were incubated with either cytochalasin 7-ketocholesterol, sildenafil, amlodipine, simvastatin, 2, 5-dimethoxy-4-iodoamphetamine (DOI), bosentan, TNF-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL) or nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN). LSECs were visualized under scanning electron microscopy to quantify fenestration porosity, diameter, and frequency, as well as direct stochastic optical reconstruction microscopy to examine actin and NO synthase. In young and old LSECs, fenestration porosity, diameter and frequency were increased by 7-ketocholesterol, while porosity and/or frequency were increased with NMN, sildenafil, amlodipine, TRAIL, and cytochalasin D. In old mice only, bosentan and DOI increased fenestration porosity and/or frequency. Modification of the actin cytoskeleton was observed with all agents that increased fenestrations, while NO synthase was only increased by sildenafil, amlodipine, and TRAIL. In conclusion, agents that target NO, actin, or lipid rafts promote changes in fenestrations in mice LSECs. Regulation of fenestrations occurs via both NO-dependent and independent pathways. This work indicates that age-related defenestration can be reversed pharmacologically, which has potential translational relevance for dyslipidemia and insulin resistance. NEW & NOTEWORTHY We demonstrate the effects of multiple nitric oxide-dependent and -independent pharmaceutical agents on fenestrations of the liver sinusoidal endothelium. Fenestrations are reorganized in response to nicotinamide mononucleotide, sildenafil, amlodipine, and TNF-related apoptosis-inducing ligand. This work indicates that age-related defenestration can be reversed pharmacologically, which has potential translational relevance for dyslipidemia and insulin resistance in old age.

OBJECTIVE: Myeloid-related protein-14 (MRP14) and its binding partner MRP8 play an essential role in innate immune function and have been implicated in a variety of inflammatory diseases. However, the role of MRP14 in obesity-induced inflammation and insulin resistance is not well defined. This study investigated the role of MRP14 in macrophage-mediated adipose tissue inflammation and obesity-induced insulin resistance. SUBJECTS AND RESULTS: Wild-type (WT) and Mrp14-/- mice were fed with a high-fat diet or normal chow for 12 weeks. Tissue-resident macrophages in both adipose tissue and liver from obese WT mice expressed higher levels of MRP14 in the visceral adipose fat and liver compared with the lean mice. Mrp14-/- mice demonstrated a significantly improved postprandial insulin sensitivity, as measured by intraperitoneal glucose tolerance test and insulin tolerance testing. Macrophages secreted MRP14 in response to inflammatory stimuli, such as LPS. Extracellular MRP8/14 induced the production of CCL5 and CXCL9. Deficiency of MRP14 did not affect macrophage proliferation, mitochondrial respiration, and glycolytic function, but Mrp14-/- macrophages showed a reduced ability to attract T cells. Depletion of the extracellular MRP14 reduced the T cell attracting ability of WT macrophages to a level similar to Mrp14-/- macrophages. CONCLUSION: Our data indicate that MRP14 deficiency decreases obesity-induced insulin resistance and MRP8/14 regulates T-cell recruitment through the induction of T-cell chemoattractant production from macrophages.

A combination of different chemotherapy approaches can obtain the best response for many cancers. However, the greatest challenge is the development of a nanoparticle formulation that can encapsulate different chemotherapeutic agents to achieve the proper synergetic chemotherapy for the tumor. Here, amphiphilic ferrocenium-tetradecyl (Fe-C14) was constructed to form cationic micelles in an aqueous solution via self-assembly. Then, it was coated by hyaluronic acid (HA) through electrostatic interactions to generate HA-Fe-C14 micelles. The HA-Fe-C14 micelles were used to deliver doxorubicin (DOX), and it showed that the DOX could be released rapidly under a high-GSH tumor environment. The HA-Fe-C14/DOX micelles were able to accumulate efficiently in tumor and showed significant anticancer effect both in vitro and in vivo. These results suggest that HA-Fe-C14/DOX micelles are a useful drug delivery system that enhances synergic antitumor treatment effects.

Generation of ammonia from nitrate reduction is slower compared with urea hydrolysis and may be more efficiently incorporated into ruminal microbial protein. We hypothesized that nitrate supplementation could increase ammonia incorporation into microbial protein in the rumen compared with urea supplementation of a low-protein diet fed to lactating dairy cows. Eight multiparous Chinese Holstein dairy cows were used in a crossover design to investigate the effect of nitrate or an isonitrogenous urea inclusion in the basal low-protein diet on rumen fermentation, milk yield, and ruminal microbial community in dairy cows fed a low-protein diet in comparison with an isonitrogenous urea control. Eight lactating cows were blocked in 4 pairs according to days in milk, parity, and milk yield and allocated to urea (7.0 g urea/kg of dry matter of basal diet) or nitrate (14.6 g of NO3-/kg of dry matter of basal diet, supplemented as sodium nitrate) treatments, which were formulated on 75% of metabolizable protein requirements. Nitrate supplementation decreased ammonia concentration in the rumen liquids (-33.1%) and plasma (-30.6%) as well as methane emissions (-15.0%) and increased dissolved hydrogen concentration (102%), microbial N (22.8%), propionate molar percentage, milk yield, and 16S rRNA gene copies of Selenomonas ruminantium. Ruminal dissolved hydrogen was positively correlated with the molar proportion of propionate (r = 0.57), and negatively correlated with acetate-to-propionate ratio (r = -0.57) and estimated net metabolic hydrogen production relative to total VFA produced (r = -0.58). Nitrate reduction to ammonia redirected metabolic hydrogen away from methanogenesis, enhanced ammonia incorporation into rumen microbial protein, and shifted fermentation from acetate to propionate, along with increasing S. ruminantium 16S rRNA gene copies, likely leading to the increased milk yield.

Receptor tyrosine kinase-like orphan receptor 2 is an enzyme-linked receptor which specifically modulates WNT5A signaling and plays an important role in tumorigenesis, invasion, and metastasis; however, the precise role of receptor tyrosine kinase-like orphan receptor 2 in cancer is controversial. The purpose of this study was to investigate the expression and role of receptor tyrosine kinase-like orphan receptor 2 in ovarian carcinoma and clarify the biological functions and interactions of receptor tyrosine kinase-like orphan receptor 2 with non-canonical Wnt pathways in ovarian cancer. The result of the human ovary tissue microarray revealed that the receptor tyrosine kinase-like orphan receptor 2-positive rate increased in malignant epithelial ovarian cancers and was extremely higher in the metastatic tumor tissues, which was also higher than that in the malignant ovarian tumor tissues. In addition, high expression of receptor tyrosine kinase-like orphan receptor 2 was closely related with ovarian cancer grading. The expression of receptor tyrosine kinase-like orphan receptor 2 protein was higher in SKOV3 and A2780 cells than OVCAR3 and 3AO cells. Knockdown of receptor tyrosine kinase-like orphan receptor 2 inhibited ovarian cancer cell proliferation, migration, invasion, and induced morphologic as well as digestive state alterations in stably transfected SKOV3 cells. Detailed study further revealed that silencing of receptor tyrosine kinase-like orphan receptor 2 reversed the epithelial-mesenchymal transition and inhibited non-canonical Wnt signaling. Our findings suggest that receptor tyrosine kinase-like orphan receptor 2 may be an important regulator of epithelial-mesenchymal transition, primarily regulated the non-canonical Wnt signaling pathway in ovarian cancer cells, and may display a promising therapeutic target for ovarian cancer.

BACKGROUND: The assessment of the coagulation status using thromboelastography (TEG) in Chinese population has less been reported. This study aimed to establish reliable reference values for kaolin-activated TEG in Chinese volunteers. METHODS: A total of 1681 Chinese adult individuals were recruited for this study. The reference individuals were stratified by gender and age, and the TEG values were measured on the basis of strict quality control. The 95% reference values were determined using nonparametric statistical methods. RESULTS: The sex-related 95% reference values were reaction time (R):4.2-8.7 minutes; clotting time (K): 1.2-3.2 minutes; alpha angle (α): 47.0-72.3 degree; maximum amplitude (MA): 49.1-70.5 mm for males, and R: 3.7-9.0 minutes; K: 1.0-3.2 minutes; α: 48.4-74.4 degree; MA: 46.8-72.4 mm for females. Also, the TEG parameters indicated a relatively more hypercoagulable profile in both female and elder groups. CONCLUSIONS: This study established the reference values for kaolin-activated TEG in the target Chinese population, which might provide a reference for both clinical and laboratory studies.

Sirt1 is a highly conserved nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD(+)) dependent histone deacetylase which plays an important role in heart diseases. Studies performed with Sirt1 activators indicated that it protects cells from ischemia/ reperfusion (I/R) injury. The protective effects of H2S against I/R injury also have been recognized. Hence, the present study was designed to explore whether Sirt1/PGC-1α participates in the protection of exogenous H2S postconditioning against I/R injury in isolated rat hearts. Isolated rat hearts were subjected to 30 minutes of global ischemia followed by 60 minutes of reperfusion after 20 minutes of equilibrium. During this procedure, the hearts were exposed to NaHS (10 µmol/L) treatment in the absence or presence of the selective Sirt1 inhibitor EX-527 (10 µmol/L). NaHS exerted a protective effect on isolated rat hearts subjected to I/R, as shown by the improved expression of Sirt1/PGC-1α associated with restoration of Sirt1 nuclear localization, cardiac function, decreased myocardial infarct size, decreased myocardial enzyme release, and several biochemical parameters, including up-regulation of the ATP and SOD levels, and down-regulation of the MDA level. However, treatment with EX-527 could partially prevent the above effects of NaHS postconditioning. These results indicate that H2S confers protective effects against I/R injury through the activation of Sirt1/PGC1α.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate clinical effect and safety of floating needle therapy and duloxetine in treating patients with persistent somatoform pain disorder (PSPD). METHODS: Totally 108 PSPD patients were randomly assigned to the floating needle treatment group, the duloxetine treatment group, and the placebo treatment group, 36 in each group. Patients in the floating needle treatment group received floating needle therapy and placebo. Those in the duloxetine treatment group received duloxetine and simulated floating needle therapy. Those in the placebo treatment group received the placebo and simulated floating needle therapy. All treatment lasted for six weeks. Efficacy and adverse reactions were evaluated using Simple McGill pain scale (SF-MPQ) and Treatment Emergent Symptom Scale (TESS) before treatment and immediately after treatment, as well as at the end of 1st, 2nd, 4th, and 6th week of treatment, respectively. Hamilton Depression Scale (HAMD, 17 items), Hamilton Anxiety Scale (HAMA) were assessed before treatment and at the end of 1st, 2nd, 4th, and 6th week of treatment, respectively. Patients in the floating needle treatment group and the duloxetine treatment group with the total reducing score rate of SF-MPQ in Pain Rating index (PRI) ≥ 50% after 6 weeks' treatment were involved in the follow-up study. RESULTS: (1) Compared with the same group before treatment, SF-MPQ score, HAMD score and HAMA total scores all decreased in all the three groups at the end of 1st, 2nd, 4th, and 6th week of treatment (P < 0.05, P < 0.01). Besides , each item of SF-MPQ significantly decreased immediately after treatment in the floating needle treatment group (P < 0.01). Compared with the placebo treatment group, SF-MPQ, HAMD, and HAMA total score in the floating needle treatment group significantly decreased after 1, 2, 4, and 6 weeks of treatment (P < 0.05, P < 0.01). SF-MPQ score, HAMD score and HAMA total score in the duloxetine treatment group also significantly decreased after 2, 4, and 6 weeks of treatment (P < 0.05, P < 0.01). (2) There were 3 patients (8.3%) who had adverse reactions in the floating needle treatment group, 17 (50.0%) in the duloxetine treatment group, and 7 (21.2%) in the placebo treatment group. Compared with the placebo treatment group, the incidence of adverse reaction increased in the duloxetine treatment group (χ² = 6.04, P < 0.05). Besides, it was higher in the duloxetine treatment group than in the floating needle treatment group (χ² = 14.9, P < 0.05). (3) There were 19 patients in the floating needle treatment group and 17 patients in the duloxetine treatment group involved in the follow-up study. Compared with 6 weeks after treatment, no significant difference was observed at 3 and 6 months after treatment in the score of SF-MPQ, HAMD, and HAMA in the floating needle treatment group and the duloxetine treatment group. No significant difference was observed between the two groups (P > 0.05). There were 5 patients (29.4%) who had adverse reactions in the duloxetine treatment group, and no adverse reactions were observed in the floating needle treatment group. The adverse reaction rate was significantly different between the two groups (χ² = 4.26, P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Floating needle therapy and duloxetine were effective in treatment of patients with PSPD. However, floating needle therapy could relieve pain more rapidly than duloxetine, with obviously less adverse reactions.

BACKGROUND: Endometrial polyps (EP) and endometriosis are both estrogen-dependent overgrowths of the endometrium. Several studies have shown a higher frequency of EP in endometriosis patients when compared with women without endometriosis. Therefore, we performed a meta-analysis to investigate the risk of EP in women with endometriosis. METHODS: This meta-analysis searched for articles published between 1964 and 2014 in PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library, as well as in Chinese databases, including CNKI, VIP and Wanfang, regarding the association between endometriosis and EP. Nine cohort studies and one case-control study including 2896 women were included in this meta-analysis. The EP risk was evaluated using relative risk (RR) with a 95% confidence interval (CI). Heterogeneity, small study effect and publication bias were assessed using Higgins I(2), sensitivity analysis and funnel plots, respectively. RESULTS: The risk of EP increased in women with endometriosis compared with those without endometriosis (the pooled RR, 2.81; 95% CI, 2.48-3.18). No significant heterogeneity, small study effect or publication bias was found. The risk of EP slightly increased in women with endometriosis at stages 2-4 compared with those at stage 1 (Pooled effect size: stage 2 versus stage 1, RR, 1.22, 95% CI, 1.04 - 1.42; stage 3 versus stage 1, RR, 1.23, 95% CI, 1.06-1.42; stage 4 versus stage 1, RR, 1.29, 95% CI, 1.11-1.51; stages 2-4 versus stage 1, RR, 1.24, 95% CI, 1.10-1.40); however, no significantly different risk of EP in women with endometriosis existed between the other stages. CONCLUSION: The results suggest that it is important to identify whether patients with endometriosis also have EP and then remove any coexisting EP via hysteroscopy, especially for infertile patients. This process will be clinically helpful to treat endometriosis-related infertility in patients with endometriosis, especially for those with endometriosis that is more serious than stage 1.
