RESUMEN

This paper deals with interaction between a bubble and fluid around it, visualized by a moving object flow image analyzer (MOFIA) consisting of a three-dimensional (3D) moving object image analyzer (MOIA) and two-dimensional particle image velocimetry (PIV). The experiments were carried out for rising bubbles of various sizes and shapes in stagnant water in a vertical pipe. In the MOFIA employed, 3D-MOIA was used to measure bubble motion and PIV to measure fluid flow. The 3D position and shape of a bubble and the velocity field were measured simultaneously. The experimental results showed that the interaction was characterized by the shape, size and density of a bubble. Concretely, they showed the characteristics of bubble motion, wake shedding, and flow field.

RESUMEN

Plasma aldosterone level (PAL) and deoxycorticosterone level (PDL) were determined in 5 subjects of normal sodium intake and 5 subjects of low sodium intake after the intramuscular administrations of ACTH (Upjohn, Cortrosyn) 40 IU, using radioligand methods. PAL and PDL reached their peaks at one hour after the administrations of ACTH, and then decreased in their normal ranges. Pretreated with the oral administrations of Dexamethasone 2 mg/day for 2 days, these subjects had, when ACTH were injected, such a similiar pattern in PAL and PDL as the peak of one hour and the consecutive falling without the pretreating of Dexamethasone. PAL and PDL of these subjects were not different between normal sodium intake and low sodium intake during the course of the experiment.

RESUMEN

Two novel strains of Propionigenium maris able to reductively debrominate 2,4,6-tribromophenol (TBP) to monobromophenols were isolated from marine hemichordate and polychaete burrows. These two strains, DSL-1 and ML-1, were anaerobic, non-motile rods that stained Gram-negative and required 0.05% yeast extract for growth. Strain DSL-1 fermented pyruvate and succinate to predominantly butyrate and strain ML-1 fermented glucose and succinate primarily to propionate. No inorganic terminal electron acceptors were identified. The pH and temperature optima for growth were 7.6 and 30 degrees C for strain DSL-1 and 7.0 and 32 degrees C for strain ML-1, respectively; doubling times for strains DSL-1 and ML-1 were 0.32 h and 0.30 h, respectively. Both strains required 2-3% (w/v) NaCl for optimal growth. Morphological and physiological features, as well as the results of 16S rDNA sequence analysis, showed these to be new strains of Propionigenium maris. Because they differ from the P. maris type strain (DSM 9537T) in a number of respects, including their ability to rapidly debrominate di- and tribromophenols, and in their specific habitats, the species description is amended to include these ecologically important properties.
