We generated 238 Zika virus (ZIKV) genomes from 135 persons in Brazil who had samples collected over 1 year to evaluate virus persistence. Phylogenetic inference clustered the genomes together with previously reported ZIKV strains from northern Brazil, showing that ZIKV has been remained relatively stable over time. Temporal phylogenetic analysis revealed limited within-host diversity among most ZIKV-persistent infected associated samples. However, we detected unusual virus temporal diversity from >5 persons, uncovering the existence of divergent genomes within the same patient. All those patients showed an increase in neutralizing antibody levels, followed by a decline at the convalescent phase of ZIKV infection. Of interest, in 3 of those patients, titers of neutralizing antibodies increased again after 6 months of ZIKV infection, concomitantly with real-time reverse transcription PCR re-positivity, supporting ZIKV reinfection events. Altogether, our findings provide evidence for the existence of ZIKV reinfection events.

This investigation provides a reproducible approach for determining the limits of an upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor designed for the methanization of the liquid fraction of fruit and vegetable waste (FVWL). Two identical mesophilic UASB reactors were operated for 240 days with a three-day fixed hydraulic retention time and an organic load rate (OLR) increased from 1.8 to 10 gCOD L-1 d-1. Because of the previous estimation of flocculent-inoculum methanogenic activity, it was possible to design a safe OLR for the quick start-up of both UASB reactors. The operational variables obtained from the operation of the UASB reactors did not show statistical differences, ensuring the experiment's reproducibility. As a result, the reactors achieved methane yield close to 0.250 LCH4 gCOD-1 up to the OLR of 7.7 gCOD L-1 d-1. Furthermore, the maximum volumetric methane production rate of 2.0 LCH4 L-1 d-1 was discovered for the OLR ranges between 7.7 and 10 gCOD L-1 d-1. The possible overload at OLR of 10 gCOD L-1 d-1 resulted in a significant reduction of methane production in both UASB reactors. Based on the methanogenic activity of the UASB reactors sludge, a maximum loading capacity of approximately 8 gCOD L-1 d-1 was estimated.

Anaerobic digestion has emerged as the most appealing waste management strategy in biorefineries. Particularly, recent studies have highlighted the energy advantages of waste co-digestion in industrial biorefineries and the use of two-stage systems. However, there are some concerns about moving the system from laboratory testing to industrial scale. One of them is the high level of investment that is required. Therefore, this study carried out a techno-economic analysis (scale-up and energy production, economic and risk analysis, and factorial design) to assess the feasibility of single- and two-stage systems in the treatment of cheese whey and glycerin for the production of hydrogen and methane. Scenarios (S1 to S9) considered thermophilic and mesophilic single and two-stage systems with different applied organic loading rates (OLRA). The analyses of scale-up and energy production revealed that S3 (a thermophilic single-stage system operated at high OLRA 17.3 kg-COD.m-3.d-1) and S9 (a thermophilic-mesophilic two-stage system operated at high OLRA 134.8 kg-COD.m-3.d-1 and 20.5 kg-COD.m-3.d-1, respectively) were more compact and required lower initial investment compared to other scenarios. The risk analysis performed by a Monte Carlo simulation showed low investment risks (10 and 11%) for S3 and S9, respectively, being the electricity sales price, the key determining factor to define whether the project in the baseline scenario will result in profit or loss. Lastly, the factorial design revealed that while the net present value (NPV) is positively impacted by rising inflation and electricity sales price, it is negatively impacted by rising capitalization rate. Such assessments assist in making decisions regarding which system can be fully implemented, the best market circumstances for the investment, and how market changes may favorably or unfavorably affect the NPV and the internal rate of return (IRR).

Anaerobic digestion for CH4 recovery in wastewater treatment has been carried out with different strategies to increase process efficiency, among which co-digestion and the two-stage process can be highlighted. In this context, this study aimed at evaluating the co-digestion of cheese whey and glycerol in a two-stage process using fluidized bed reactors, verifying the effect of increasing the organic loading rate (OLR) (2-20 g-COD.L-1.d-1) and temperature (thermophilic and mesophilic) in the second stage methanogenic reactor. The mesophilic methanogenic reactor (R-Meso) (mean temperature of 22 °C) was more tolerant to high OLR and its best performance was at 20 g-COD.L-1.d-1, resulting in methane yield (MY) and methane production (MPR) of 273 mL-CH4.g-COD-1 and 5.8 L-CH4.L-1.d-1 (with 67% of CH4), respectively. Through 16S rRNA gene massive sequencing analysis, a greater diversity of microorganisms was identified in R-Meso than in R-Thermo (second stage methanogenic reactor, 55 °C). Firmicutes was the phyla with higher relative abundance in R-Thermo, while in R-Meso the most abundant ones were Proteobacteria and Bacteroidetes. Regarding the Archaea domain, a predominance of hydrogenotrophic microorganisms could be observed, being the genera Methanothermobacter and Methanobacterium the most abundant in R-Thermo and R-Meso, respectively. The two-stage system composed with a thermophilic acidogenic reactor + R-Meso was more adequate for the co-digestion of cheese whey and glycerol than the single-stage process, promoting increases of up to 47% in the energetic yield (10.3 kJ.kg-COD-1) and 14% in organic matter removal (90.5%).

BACKGROUND: Zika virus infection is commonly described as a mild and self-limiting illness. However, cardiac complications were associated with acute Zika virus infection. CASE PRESENTATION: A 46-year-old woman without previous comorbidities with a 1-day history of symptoms tested positive for ZIKV by real time reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (rRT-PCR). She was admitted two days after with clinical worsening, cardiac enzymes elevated, and cardiac imaging findings, and the diagnosis of myopericarditis was made. The patient was treated and presented significant clinical improvement after one year. CONCLUSIONS: Cardiac complication following ZIKV infection appears to be infrequent. Here, we report a rare case of viral myopericarditis caused by ZIKV infection.

Trichomoniasis is the most common non-viral sexually transmitted infection worldwide and it may have serious consequences, especially for women. Currently, 5-nitroimidazole drugs are the treatment of choice for trichomoniasis, although presenting adverse effects and reported cases of drug resistance. Metabolites isolated from marine fungi have attracted considerable attention due to their unique chemical structures with diverse biological activities, including antiprotozoal activity. In this study, we showed the anti-Trichomonas vaginalis activity of fractions obtained from marine fungi and the chemical composition of the most active fraction was determined. Ethyl acetate fractions of the fungus Aspergillus niger (EAE03) and Trichoderma harzianum/Hypocrea lixii complex (EAE09) were active against T. vaginalis. These samples, EAE03 and EAE09, were also effective against the fresh clinical isolate metronidazole-resistant TV-LACM2R, presenting MIC values of 2.0 mg/mL and 1.0 mg/mL, respectively. The same MIC values were found against ATCC 30,236 T. vaginalis isolate. In vitro cytotoxicity revealed only the fraction named EAE03 with no cytotoxic effect; however, the active fractions did not promote a significant hemolytic effect after 1-h incubation. Already, the in vivo toxicity evaluation using Galleria mellonella larvae demonstrated that none of the tested samples caused a reduction in animal survival. The fraction EAE03 was followed for purification steps and analyzed by LC-DAD-MS. Eleven compounds were annotated, including butyrolactone, butanolide, and atromentin. Overall, the range of activities reported confirms the potential of marine fungi to produce bioactive molecules.

BACKGROUND: The Zika virus outbreak has triggered a set of local and global actions for a rapid, effective, and timely public health response. A World Health Organization (WHO) initiative, supported by the Department of Chronic Condition Diseases and Sexually Transmitted Infections (DCCI) of the Health Surveillance Secretariat (SVS), Brazil Ministry of Health (MoH) and other public health funders, resulted in the start of the "Study on the persistence of Zika virus in body fluids of patients with ZIKV infection in Brazil - ZIKABRA study". The ZIKABRA study was designed to increase understanding of how long ZIKV persists in bodily fluids and informing best measures to prevent its transmission. Data collection began in July 2017 and the last follow up visit occurred in 06/26/2020. METHODS: A framework for the ZIKABRA Cooperation initiative is provided through a description and analysis of the mechanisms, strategies and the ethos that have guided the models of international governance and technical cooperation in health for scientific exchange in the context of a public health emergency. Among the methodological strategies, we included a review of the legal documents that supported the ZIKABRA Cooperation; weekly documents produced in the meetings and working sessions; technical reports; memorandum of understanding and the research protocol. CONCLUSION: We highlight the importance of working in cooperation between different institutional actors to achieve more significant results than that obtained by each group working in isolation. In addition, we point out the advantages of training activities, ongoing supervision, the construction of local installed research capacity, training academic and non-academic human resources, improvement of laboratory equipment, knowledge transfer and the availability of the ZIKABRA study protocol for development of similar studies, favoring the collective construction of knowledge to provide public health emergency responses. Strategy harmonization; human resources and health services; timing and recruiting particularities and processing institutional clearance in the different sites can be mentioned as challenges in this type of initiative.

We evaluated sweat, blood and urine specimens obtained from an ongoing cohort study in Brazil. Samples were collected at pre-established intervals after the initial rash presentation and tested for Zika virus (ZIKV) RNA presence by real-time reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (rRT-PCR). From 254 participants with confirmed infection, ZIKV RNA was detected in the sweat of 46 individuals (18.1%). Sweat presented a median cycle threshold (Ct) of 34.74 [interquartile range (IQR) 33.44-36.04], comparable to plasma (Ct 35.96 - IQR 33.29-36.69) and higher than urine (Ct 30.78 - IQR 28.72-33.22). Concomitant detection with other specimens was observed in 33 (72%) of 46 participants who had a positive result in sweat. These findings represent an unusual and not yet investigated virus shedding through eccrine glands.

This study aimed to compare the production of hydrogen and 1,3-propanediol from crude glycerol (10 g/L) in mesophilic (30 °C) and thermophilic (55 °C) anaerobic fluidized bed reactors, namely AFBR30 °C and AFBR55 °C, respectively, at hydraulic retention times (HRT) reduced from 8 to 1 h. In AFBR30 °C, the absence or low hydrogen yields can be attributed to the production of 1,3-propanediol (maximum of 651 mmol/mol glycerol), and the formation of caproic acid (maximum of 1097 mg/L) at HRTs between 8 and 2 h. In AFBR55 °C, the hydrogen yield of 1.20 mol H2/mol glycerol consumed was observed at the HRT of 1 h. The maximum yield of 1,3-propanediol in AFBR55 °C was equal to 804 mmol/mol glycerol at the HRT of 6 h and was concomitant with the production of hydrogen (0.87 mol H2/mol glycerol consumed) and butyric acid (1447 mg/L).

The immune status of women changes during and after pregnancy, differs between blood compartments at delivery and is affected by environmental factors particularly in tropical areas endemic for multiple infections. We quantified the plasma concentration of a set of thirty-one TH1, TH2, TH17 and regulatory cytokines, pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory cytokines and chemokines, and growth factors (altogether biomarkers), in a cohort of 540 pregnant women from five malaria-endemic tropical countries. Samples were collected at recruitment (first antenatal visit), delivery (periphery, cord and placenta) and postpartum, allowing a longitudinal analysis. We found the lowest concentration of biomarkers at recruitment and the highest at postpartum, with few exceptions. Among them, IL-6, HGF and TGF-ß had the highest levels at delivery, and even higher concentrations in the placenta compared to peripheral blood. Placental concentrations were generally higher than peripheral, except for eotaxin that was lower. We also compared plasma biomarker concentrations between the tropical cohort and a control group from Spain at delivery, presenting overall higher biomarker levels the tropical cohort, particularly pro-inflammatory cytokines and growth factors. Only IL-6 presented lower levels in the tropical group. Moreover, a principal component analysis of biomarker concentrations at delivery showed that women from Spain grouped more homogenously, and that IL-6 and IL-8 clustered together in the tropical cohort but not in the Spanish one. Plasma cytokine concentrations correlated with Plasmodium antibody levels at postpartum but not during pregnancy. This basal profiling of immune mediators over gestation and in different compartments at delivery is important to subsequently understand response to infections and clinical outcomes in mothers and infants in tropical areas.

Cryptic Plasmodium niches outside the liver possibly represent a major source of hypnozoite-unrelated recrudescences in malaria. Maurizio Ascoli, an Italian physician and scientist, suggested that infection was maintained as a result of the persistence of endoerythrocytic parasites in the circulatory bed of some internal organs, mainly the spleen. This would explain a proportion of the recurrences in patients, regardless of the Plasmodium species. Ascoli proposed a method that included the co-administration of adrenaline, in order to induce splenic contraction, and quinine to clear expelled forms in major vessels. Driven by controversy regarding safety and effectiveness, along with the introduction of new drugs, the Ascoli method was abandoned and mostly forgotten by the malaria research community. To date, however, the existence of cryptic parasites outside the liver is gaining supportive data. This work is a historical retrospective of cryptic malaria infections and the Ascoli method, highlighting key knowledge gaps regarding these possible parasite reservoirs.

This study assessed the effects of hydraulic retention time (HRT; 8 h-0.25 h) on simultaneous hydrogen and methane production from cheese whey (5000 mg carbohydrates/L) in a mesophilic (30 °C) expanded granular sludge bed (EGSB) reactor. Methane production was observed at HRTs from 4 to 0.25 h. The maximum methane yield (9.8 ± 1.9 mL CH4/g CODap, reported as milliliter CH4 per gram of COD applied) and methane production rate (461 ± 75 mL CH4/day Lreactor) occurred at HRTs of 4 h and 2 h, respectively. Hydrogen production increased as methane production decreased with decreasing HRT from 8 to 0.25 h. The maximum hydrogen yield of 3.2 ± 0.3 mL H2/g CODap (reported as mL H2 per gram of COD applied) and hydrogen production rate of 1951 ± 171 mL H2/day Lreactor were observed at the HRT of 0.25 h. The decrease in HRT from 8 to 0.25 h caused larger changes in the bacterial populations than the archaea populations. With the decrease in HRT (6 h-0.25 h), the Shannon diversity index decreased (3.02-2.87) for bacteria and increased (1.49-1.83) for archaea. The bacterial dominance increased (0.059-0.066) as the archaea dominance decreased (0.292-0.201) with the HRT decrease from 6 to 0.25 h.

RESUMEN

We detected Zika virus RNA in rectal swab samples from 10 patients by using real-time reverse transcription PCR, and we isolated the virus from 1 patient. The longest interval from symptom onset to detection was 14 days. These findings are applicable to diagnosis and infection prevention recommendations.

BACKGROUND: In low- and middle-income countries, poor access to care can result in delayed surgical repair of orofacial clefts leading to poor functional outcomes. Even in Brazil, an upper middle-income country with free comprehensive cleft care, delayed repair of orofacial clefts commonly occurs. This study aims to assess patient-perceived barriers to cleft care at a referral center in São Paulo. METHODS: A 29-item questionnaire assessing the barriers to care was administered to 101 consecutive patients (or their guardians) undergoing orofacial cleft surgery in the Plastic Surgery Department in Hospital das Clínicas, in São Paulo, Brazil, between February 2016 and January 2017. RESULTS: A total of 54.4% of patients had their first surgery beyond the recommended time frame of 6 months for a cleft lip or cleft lip and palate and 18 months for a cleft palate. There was a greater proportion of isolated cleft palates in the delayed group (66.7% vs 33.3%). Almost all patients had a timely diagnosis, but delays occurred from diagnosis to repair. The mean number of barriers reported for each patient was 3.8. The most frequently cited barriers related to lack of access to care include (1) lack of hospitals available to perform the surgery (54%) and (2) lack of availability of doctors (51%). CONCLUSION: Delays from diagnosis to treatment result in patients receiving delayed primary repairs. The commonest patient-perceived barriers are related to a lack of access to cleft care, which may represent a lack of awareness of available services.

BACKGROUND: Zika virus (ZIKV) has been identified in several body fluids of infected individuals. In most cases, it remained detected in blood from few days to 1 week after the onset of symptoms, and can persist longer in urine and in semen. ZIKV infection can have dramatic consequences such as microcephaly and Guillain-Barré syndrome. ZIKV sexual transmission has been documented. A better understanding of ZIKV presence and persistence across biologic compartments is needed to devise rational measures to prevent its transmission. METHODS: This observational cohort study will recruit non-pregnant participants aged 18 years and above with confirmed ZIKV infection [positive reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) test in blood and/or urine]: symptomatic men and women in ZIKV infection acute phase, and their symptomatic or asymptomatic household/sexual infected contacts. Specimens of blood, urine, semen, vaginal secretion/menstrual blood, rectal swab, oral fluids, tears, sweat, urine and breast milk (if applicable) will be collected at pre-established intervals and tested for ZIKV RNA presence by RT-PCR, other co-infection (dengue, Chikungunya, HIV, hepatitis B and C, syphilis), antibody response (including immunoglobulins M and G), plaque reduction neutralization test (if simultaneously positive for ZIKV and dengue), and ZIKV culture and RNA sequencing. Data on socio-demographic characteristics and comorbidities will be collected in parallel. Participants will be followed up for 12 months. DISCUSSION: This prolonged longitudinal follow-up of ZIKV infected persons with regular biologic testing and data collection will offer a unique opportunity to investigate the presence and persistence of ZIKV in various biologic compartments, their clinical and immunological correlates as well as the possibility of ZIKV reactivation/reinfection over time. This valuable information will substantially contribute to the body of knowledge on ZIKV infection and serve as a base for the development of more effective recommendation on the prevention of ZIKV transmission. BACKGROUND: The association between gynecological diagnoses and their distribution in the health sectors provides benefits in the field of women's health promotion and in medical and interdisciplinary education, along with rationalization according to level of care complexity. Thus, the objective is analyze the clinical-demographic characteristics, main diagnoses in gynecological ambulatory care, and their distribution in health services. METHOD: This is a research project of retrospective audit study design with a chart review of data from 428 women treated at University Ambulatory Clinic of Women's Health, the facility in gynecology and training for Family and Community Medical Residents, São Paulo, Brazil, from 2012 to 2014. Clinical and demographic information, gynecological diagnoses (International Classification of Diseases), and distribution of health services (primary, secondary, and tertiary) were described. RESULTS: The female patients present non-inflammatory disorders of the female genital tract (81.07%, n = 347) and diseases of the urinary system (22.66%, n = 97) among the gynecological diagnoses. The chances of having benign breast disease and non-inflammatory disorders of the female genital tract during the reproductive period corresponds to being 3.61 (CI 1.00-16.29) and 2.56 times (CI 1.58-4.16) higher, respectively, than during the non-reproductive period. The non-inflammatory disorders of the female genital tract (93.33%, n = 28) are most related to the tertiary sector. The distribution in health services was the following: 71.30% (n = 305) in the primary sector, 21.70% (n = 93) in the secondary sector and 7% (n = 30) in the tertiary sector. CONCLUSION: The studied women presented non-inflammatory disorders of the female genital tract and diseases of the urinary system as determined by gynecological diagnoses. Low-assistance complexity followed in most cases.

Trichomonas vaginalis is a flagellated protozoan that affects the human urogenital tract causing 276.4 million new infections a year. The parasite elicits a vaginal mucosal infiltration of immune cells, especially neutrophils which are considered to be primarily responsible for cytological change observed at the infection site as well as the major contributor in the inflammatory response against the parasite. Extracellular nucleotides and their nucleosides are signaling compounds involved in several biological processes, including inflammation and immune responses. Once in the extracellular space, the nucleotides and nucleosides can directly activate the purinergic receptors. Herein, we investigated the involvement of purinergic signaling on the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and cytokines by T. vaginalis-stimulated neutrophils. Parasites were able to induce an increase in ROS and IL-8 levels while they did not promote IL-6 secretion or neutrophil elastase activity. Adenine and guanine nucleotides or nucleosides were not able to modulate ROS and cytokine production; however, when T. vaginalis-stimulated neutrophils were incubated with adenosine and adenosine deaminase inhibitor, the levels of ROS and IL-8 were significantly reduced. These immunosuppressive effects were probably a response to the higher bioavailability of adenosine found in the supernatant as result of inhibition of enzyme activity. The involvement of P1 receptors was investigated by immunofluorescence and A1 receptor was the most abundant. Our data show that the influence of purinergic signaling, specifically those effects associated with adenosine accumulation, on the modulation of production of proinflammatory mediators by T. vaginalis-stimulated neutrophils contribute to the understanding of immunological aspects of trichomoniasis.

BACKGROUND: During pregnancy, Plasmodium falciparum-induced malaria can cause placental lesions and intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR). There are few published studies on Plasmodium vivax-induced malaria in pregnancy. Ultrasound is an efficient method for evaluating foetal biometry and placenta. The present study aimed to investigate the occurrence of increased placental thickness, foetal biometry and the amniotic fluid via ultrasound in a cohort of pregnant women with vivax malaria in Manaus, Amazonas, Brazil. METHODS: A cohort study was conducted among 118 pregnant women with vivax malaria and 191 pregnant women without malaria. Foetal biometry, placental thicknesses and the amniotic fluid were evaluated via ultrasound. Biometric data were distributed by the trimester in which the infection occurred and converted to Z scores. The results were compared between the groups. RESULTS: Among pregnant women from the cohort, increased placental thickness was observed in ten women with malaria (8.5 vs 0%; p <0.001). The Z scores of biometric parameters were not statistically significant when comparing the groups or according to the time of infection. In ultrasound results of the 118 pregnant women with malaria, seven (6%) showed low foetal weight, two (1.7%) showed oligohydramnios and one (0.85%) showed foetal malformation. There was no significant difference when these variables were compared to those of the control group. CONCLUSIONS: The placental thickness changes were significant but caused no foetal repercussions at birth. The ultrasound findings except placental thickness were similar in both groups, possibly because this is a low-endemic area and the pregnant women in the study were followed up in an active detection system that allowed early diagnosis and treatment of new malaria episodes.

OBJECTIVE: Emergency contraception (EC) is an effective and safe method for preventing unplanned pregnancy after unprotected sexual intercourse among adolescents but is infrequently prescribed by pediatricians. Because of the scarcity of data on the discomfort with EC prescription among physicians in Brazil, this study aimed to identify associated factors with discomfort with EC prescription among pediatricians in the state of Amazonas. METHODS: A web-based, cross-sectional study including sociodemographic data, knowledge, attitudes, and discomfort with EC prescription was used. Multivariate logistic regression and artificial intelligence methods such as decision tree and random forest analysis were used to identify factors associated with discomfort with EC prescriptions. RESULTS: Among 151 physicians who responded to the survey, 53.0% were uncomfortable with prescribing EC, whereas only 33.1% had already prescribed it. Inexperience was significantly associated with discomfort with EC prescription (odds ratio 4.47, 95% confidence interval 1.71-11.66). Previous EC prescription was protective against discomfort with EC prescription in the three models. CONCLUSIONS: EC is still infrequently prescribed by pediatricians because of inexperience and misconceptions. Training these professionals needs to be implemented as part of public health policies to reduce unplanned adolescent pregnancy.

Sugarcane vinasse exits the distillation process at high temperatures, which may differ from the optimal temperatures for dark fermentation and anaerobic digestion. A 15 °C temperature increase, for example, stops sugarcane vinasse methane generation, making distillery vinasse digestion complicated. Conversely, in other aspects, co-digesting vinasse and glycerol has been proven to stabilize methane production from vinasse because of sulfate dilution. However, glycerol has not been tested to stabilize vinasse digestion under temperature changes. Thus, this study compared the effects of different temperature settings on the co-digestion of 10 g COD L-1 of vinasse and glycerol (50 %:50 % on a COD basis) in anaerobic fluidized bed reactors (AFBR), i.e., an acidogenic and a methanogenic one-stage AFBRs operated at 55, 60, and 65 °C, and two methanogenic AFBRs fed both with acidogenic effluent (one operated at room temperature (25 °C) and the other at 55, 60, and 65 °C). The co-digestion provided steady methane generation at all AFBRs, with methane production rates ranging from 2.27 to 2.93 L CH4 d-1 L-1, whether in one or two stages. A feature of this research was to unravel the black box of the role of sulfate in the digestion of sugarcane vinasse, which was rarely studied. Desulfovibrio was the primary genus degrading 1,3-propanediol into 3-hydroxypropanoate after genome sequencing. Phosphate acetyltransferase (EC: 2.3.1.8, K00625) and acetate kinase (EC: 2.7.2.1, K00925) genes were also found, suggesting propionate was metabolized. In practical aspects, regarding the two-stage systems, the thermophilic-mesophilic (acidogenic-methanogenic) configuration is best for extracting additional value-added products because 1,3-propanediol may be recovered at high yields with steady methane production at reduced energy expenditure in a reactor operated at room temperature. However, the one-stage design is best for methane generation per system volume since it remained stable with rising temperatures, and all systems presented similar methane production rates.
