Pregnancy is a unique period in women life, characterized by anatomical and metabolic variation that may affect health-related quality of life (HRQoL). Physical activity has the potential to positively influence HRQoL. The aim of this study is to analyze the association between the fulfillment of physical activity guidelines and HRQoL throughout pregnancy. Seventy-eight pregnant women were assessed at two time point through their pregnancy: at mid- and at later-pregnancy. Physical activity was objectively assessed by a multi-sensor monitor and pregnant women were categorized by the fulfillment of the minimum physical activity recommendations: at least 30 minutes/day on at least 5 days/week. Perceived mental health was evaluated by health-related quality of life and by psychological pregnancy symptoms, using the SF-36 and the Pregnancy Symptoms Inventory, respectively. T-Student Test and hierarchical multiple linear regressions analysis was developed. Pregnant women who fulfilled physical activity recommendations reported better mental HRQoL both at mid-pregnancy (p = 0.148) and later-pregnancy (p = 0.007). The number of days meeting minimum physical activity recommendations contributes to better mental HRQoL and together with depression and anxiety symptoms the model explain the 65% of the mental HRQoL at later pregnancy. Meeting the minimum physical activity recommendations is associated with better perceived health at both midpregnancy and later pregnancy. While mental HRQoL is explained by physical activity, physical HRQoL is explained by others factors such as age or pregnancy-related symptoms, but not by meeting the minimum physical activity recommendations.

This study aimed to analyse the longitudinal association of amateur cycling training volume with health by comparing the proximity of participation in a high-demand cycling event. Variations in cycling training volume, behavioural cardiometabolic risk factors, and physical and psychosocial health were examined. Cyclists decreased their training volume by approximately 40% and their total physical activity volumes by approximately 20%, while controls maintained (~5%). A time*group interaction was found for men's physical conditioning, body mass index and anxiety and, independent of gender, for behavioural cardiometabolic risk factors. Variation in cycling training volume was positively correlated with variation in physical conditioning and total physical activity and negatively correlated with variation in body mass index. The high level of cycling training volume developed at the time coinciding with a high demand cycling event predisposes to better physical health and behavioural cardiometabolic risk factors, without negatively affect psychosocial health, compared with six month later.

AIM: This study examined the associations of activity behaviors composition (sleep, sedentary time, light and moderate-to-vigorous physical activity) with adiposity and cardiorespiratory fitness, and how isotemporal reallocations of time between activity behaviors are associated with differences in adiposity and cardiorespiratory fitness. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in 130 women during midpregnancy. Activity behaviors, conceptualized as a 24-hours composition, were objectively assessed by multi-sensor monitors. Skinfold thickness, fat mass index, and body mass index were calculated as indicators of adiposity. Cardiorespiratory fitness was assessed using a 6-minute walk test. Log-ratio multiple linear regression models and compositional isotemporal substitutions were used to analyze the associations and estimated differences in outcomes. RESULTS: The activity composition was significantly associated with adiposity indicators (all P < .001) and cardiorespiratory fitness (P values from .025 to <.001) during midpregnancy. The isotemporal substitutions were asymmetrical, showing the highest estimated differences in adiposity (8.7%, 0.80 kg/m2 , for fat mass index; 6.0%, 2.65 mm, for the sum of skinfold thickness; and 3.8%, 1.02 kg/m2 , for body mass index) and cardiorespiratory fitness (3.0%, 1.00 mL/kg min) when 30 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity was reallocated by sedentary time. CONCLUSION: The activity composition was associated with adiposity and the cardiorespiratory fitness levels during midpregnancy, with moderate-to-vigorous physical activity being the leading activity behavior. The most unfavorable differences in adiposity and cardiorespiratory fitness were found when moderate-to-vigorous physical activity was replaced by another behavior, mainly sedentary time, reinforcing the importance of at least maintaining moderate-to-vigorous physical activity during pregnancy.

Depression is a psychiatric disorder characterized by low mood, loss of interest/enjoyment, and reduced energy and one of the five leading causes of disability and a major contributor to all-cause mortality worldwide. People with depression have, between others, a reduced life expectancy, worse quality of life and cardiorespiratory fitness, and increased risk of type 2 diabetes, compared to the general population. Furthermore, the economic burden of mental disorders including depression is evident, and it is expected to increase to more than double by 2030. Therefore, reducing the growing burden of mental disorders such as depression should be a health priority. Improved prevention and treatment are two key factors that may reduce the burden of depression. Pharmacological- and psychotherapy-based interventions have been traditionally considered for treating depression disorders; however, there is an increasing amount of scientific evidence confirming that physical activity and physical exercise should be highly considered in prevention and treatment of depressive disorders. In this chapter, we aim to summarize and discuss the research progress of physical activity and exercise in prevention and treatment of depressive disorder. Specifically, we summarized and discussed the research progress of the prognostic use of physical activity for incident depression, the importance of sedentary behavior and other outcomes typically improved by physical activity/exercise such as cardiorespiratory fitness for future depression, the research progress of the evidence of the benefits of exercise in people with depression disorders, the resistance training effects in adults and older adults with depression, and the recommendations for the prescription of exercise for people with depression.

Schizophrenia is a psychiatric disorder characterized by distortions of thinking and perception, with no strictly pathognomonic symptoms that can be divided into positive, negative, and cognitive symptom domains. People with schizophrenia have, between others, a reduced life expectancy and cardiorespiratory and muscular fitness and increased risk of cardiovascular disease, metabolic syndrome, obesity, hypertension, and hyperlipidemia compared to the general population. Furthermore, the economic burden of mental disorders including schizophrenia is evident and it is expected to increase to more than double by 2030. Therefore, reducing the growing burden of mental disorders such as schizophrenia should be a health priority. Specifically, we summarized and discussed the research progress of the prognostic use of physical activity for incident schizophrenia; the importance of other outcomes typically improved by physical activity/exercise such as obesity and fitness (cardiorespiratory and muscular fitness) for future schizophrenia; the research progress of the evidence of the benefits of exercise in people with schizophrenia disorders differentiating between effects of exercise on varied health outcomes, cognitive functioning, and cardiorespiratory fitness; and finally the clinical practice recommendations.

This study aimed to analyse the association between amateur cycling training volume and physical and psychosocial health. A cross-sectional study was developed, via self-reported survey, among 1669 cyclists and 1039 controls, where analysis of variance and hierarchical multiple linear regression test were developed. Independent of gender, high volumes of amateur endurance cycling practice benefited cyclists' body mass index and male cyclists' physical conditioning, while psychosocial health did not differ among the training volume groups. Hierarchical multiple linear regression analysis highlighted the contribution of training volume to lower cyclists' body mass index and better male cyclists' physical conditioning. All cyclist groups presented better physical and psychosocial health than controls. High volumes of amateur endurance cycling training were associated with better physical health without jeopardizing psychosocial health. The practice of amateur endurance cycling, both in low and high volumes, was associated with better physical and psychosocial health compared with inactivity.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the feasibility and effects of a 12-week intervention combining aerobic and strength exercises in prison inmates with psychiatric disorders. DESIGN: Two parallel-group, randomized controlled trials. SETTING: A psychiatric prison hospital. SUBJECTS: Forty-one men prison inmates (mean age ± SD = 38.2 ± 9.2 years, mean prison duration ± SD = 2.6 ± 2.5 years) with psychiatric disorders (primarily personality disorder, n = 27; mean illness duration ± SD = 12.0 ± 10.5 years). INTERVENTIONS: Participants were randomly allocated to intervention group consisted of exercise plus usual care (n = 21) or control group which received usual care (n = 20) for 12 weeks. The exercise programme included three weekly sessions of group-based moderate-to-high intensity combined exercises designed and supervised by exercise professionals. MAIN MEASURES: Fitness and anthropometric measures were assessed using field-based tests (6-minute walk, Incremental Shuttle Walk, Arm-Curl, and Chair-Stand), handgrip dynamometry, bioelectrical impedance, and waist and hip circumferences. RESULTS: There were no adverse events, and 10 intervention participants withdrew. The remaining 11 participants attended a mean of 28 sessions, of which nine met the compliance criteria. Between-group change differences substantially favoured the compliance intervention group for the 6-minute walk (+21.2%), Incremental Shuttle Walk (+33.9%), Arm-Curl (+13.8%), waist (-3.5%), waist/height0.5 (-1.7%) (-2.7%), waist/hip (-3.4%), and Body Shape Index (-3.3%) (-3.5%). Additional analysis showed beneficial effects of exercise participation on handgrip strength. CONCLUSION: The intervention was safe, had a high dropout rate, and seemed to be effective for improving fitness and anthropometric measures in men prison inmates with psychiatric disorders who attended and participated in the exercise sessions.

Based on the high financial and logistical costs associated with the assessment of body composition with dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), this study determined which field method has the best correlation with DXA data, and developed an equation to estimate fat-free mass (FFM) using the field anthropometric data in international soccer players. A total of 17 international soccer players participated in this study. DXA values provided a criterion measure of FFM. Correlation coefficients, biases, limits of agreement, and differences were used as validity measures, and regression analyses were used to develop the prediction equation. All field methods used to obtain FFM data showed positive correlations (r from 0.90-0.96) with DXA. Only the equation developed by Deurenberg et al. [6] showed no differences from DXA with a low bias. The main strength of this study was providing a valid and accurate equation to estimate FFM specifically in international soccer players.

This study determined the most effective field method for quantifying fat-free mass (FFM) in elite youth male soccer players compared to dual X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) values and to develop prediction equations for FFM based on anthropometric variables. Forty-one male elite-standard youth soccer players, ages 16.2-18.0 years, undertook FFM assessments including bioelectrical impedance analysis, and different skinfold-based prediction equations. DXA provided a criterion measure of FFM. Correlation coefficients, bias, limits of agreement, and differences were used as validity measures, and regression analyses to develop soccer-specific prediction equations. Slaughter et al (1988), Durnin and Wormersley (1974), and Sarria et al (1998) equations showed the lowest biases, and no significant, standardized, and substantial differences against DXA. The new youth soccer-specific anthropometric equation explained 91% of the DXA-derived FFM variance using three circumferences, eight skinfolds, and one bone breadth. All field methods compared in this study may not be adequate for estimating FFM in elite youth male soccer players, except the equations of Slaughter et al (1988), Durnin and Wormersley (1974), and Sarria et al (1998). We recommend the use of the new soccer-specific equation proposed in this study as a valid alternative to DXA to quantify FFM among elite youth male players.

Objectives To quantify and compare the sedentary time estimated by the Sedentary Behavior Questionnaire (SBQ) and the sedentary time objectively measured by a multi-sensor monitor (SWA) in pregnant women. Methods One hundred eighty-six participants answered the SBQ and wore the SWA at least 7 valid days. The concordance, correlation, agreement and relative activity levels between both measures of sedentary time were examined. Differences of sedentary time between weekday and weekend and between groups stratified by sociodemographic and clinical characteristic were evaluated by one-way analysis of variance. Results Pregnant women were sedentary the 64% of their waking hours. Television viewing is the most prevalent sedentary behavior. The concordance, correlation, and agreement between SBQ and SWA were weak, yet a significant correlation in weekday and average day sedentary time (r = 0.23 and 0.20, P = 0.001 and 0.008, respectively) was observed. A significant linear trend was found for increasing sedentary time between both methods using a relative activity levels analysis. Conclusions for Practice Pregnant women experience high amount of sedentary time, for approximately half of the day. The SBQ shows a low validity and agreement, but strong ability to rank individuals compared with SWA in pregnant women.

This study determined the most effective field method for quantifying body fat percentage in male elite youth soccer players and developed prediction equations based on anthropometric variables. Forty-four male elite-standard youth soccer players aged 16.3-18.0 years underwent body fat percentage assessments, including bioelectrical impedance analysis and the calculation of various skinfold-based prediction equations. Dual X-ray absorptiometry provided a criterion measure of body fat percentage. Correlation coefficients, bias, limits of agreement, and differences were used as validity measures, and regression analyses were used to develop soccer-specific prediction equations. The equations from Sarria et al. (1998) and Durnin & Rahaman (1967) reached very large correlations and the lowest biases, and they reached neither the practically worthwhile difference nor the substantial difference between methods. The new youth soccer-specific skinfold equation included a combination of triceps and supraspinale skinfolds. None of the practical methods compared in this study are adequate for estimating body fat percentage in male elite youth soccer players, except for the equations from Sarria et al. (1998) and Durnin & Rahaman (1967). The new youth soccer-specific equation calculated in this investigation is the only field method specifically developed and validated in elite male players, and it shows potentially good predictive power.

AIMS: To identify potential explanatory factors and establish health-related quality of life (HRQoL) levels of healthy pregnant women at midpregnancy. BACKGROUND: The HRQoL levels perceived by pregnant women are lower than those perceived by women of similar age and decline during the course of pregnancy. DESIGN: An exploratory cross-sectional design was used. METHODS: One hundred thirty-four healthy women from antenatal clinics completed questionnaires were administered a cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) test and wore a multisensor body monitor for 7 days at midpregnancy. Data were collected from September 2015-December 2016. RESULTS: Cardiorespiratory fitness, musculoskeletal symptoms, and age were identified as explanatory factors of the physical component summary of HRQoL. Explanatory factors of the mental component summary included musculoskeletal and psychological symptoms and light activity. Significant differences in HRQoL levels were identified among groups of pregnant women stratified by age, occupational status, pregnancy symptoms, and CRF. CONCLUSIONS: Modifiable factors of HRQoL, such as CRF and active lifestyle may be important areas to target in interventions aimed at promoting HRQoL in healthy women at midpregnancy. The identification of the groups of pregnant women with lower levels of HRQoL may help midwives and health professional to focus their advice and conduct interventions on these groups of pregnant women. These modifiable factors should be considered in future longitudinal studies to determine causal effects, will likely help improve multidisciplinary treatments.

OBJECTIVES: To compare the responses of high-sensitivity cardiac troponin T (hs-cTnT) and NH2-terminal probrain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) after 60 minutes of swimming in male and female adults and adolescents with different pubertal status. STUDY DESIGN: Adolescent swimmers (25 male and 25 female) and adult swimmers (7 male and 9 female) participated in a 60-minute maximal swimming test with serial assessment of hs-cTnT and NT-proBNP at rest, immediately postexercise, and at 1, 3, 6, 12, and 24 hours postexercise. Adolescents were classified according to pubertal status: Tanner stages 3 (n = 14), 4 (n = 22), and 5 (n = 14). RESULTS: Exercise resulted in an increase in both biomarkers. hs-cTnT responses to exercise were similar in adolescents with different pubertal status and adults, although there was substantial individual variability in peak hs-cTnT, with the upper reference limit exceeding in 62% of the participants. Postexercise kinetics for hs-cTnT were largely consistent across all groups with a return to near baseline levels 24 hours postexercise. The male participants showed higher values of hs-cTnT at baseline and postexercise. All groups had similar NT-proBNP responses to acute exercise and recovery. One swimmer exceeded the upper reference limit for NT-proBNP. CONCLUSIONS: An exercise-associated increase in hs-cTnT and NT-proBNP occurred in response to a 60-minute maximal swimming test that was independent of pubertal status/adolescent vs adults. The present data also suggests that baseline and postexercise hs-cTnT values are higher in male compared with female, with no sex differences in NT-proBNP values.

Reliability and measurement error of tensiomyography to assess mechanical muscle function: A systematic review. J Strength Cond Res 31(12): 3524-3536, 2017-Interest in studying mechanical skeletal muscle function through tensiomyography (TMG) has increased in recent years. This systematic review aimed to (a) report the reliability and measurement error of all TMG parameters (i.e., maximum radial displacement of the muscle belly [Dm], contraction time [Tc], delay time [Td], half-relaxation time [½ Tr], and sustained contraction time [Ts]) and (b) to provide critical reflection on how to perform accurate and appropriate measurements for informing clinicians, exercise professionals, and researchers. A comprehensive literature search was performed of the Pubmed, Scopus, Science Direct, and Cochrane databases up to July 2017. Eight studies were included in this systematic review. Meta-analysis could not be performed because of the low quality of the evidence of some studies evaluated. Overall, the review of the 9 studies involving 158 participants revealed high relative reliability (intraclass correlation coefficient [ICC]) for Dm (0.91-0.99); moderate-to-high ICC for Ts (0.80-0.96), Tc (0.70-0.98), and ½ Tr (0.77-0.93); and low-to-high ICC for Td (0.60-0.98), independently of the evaluated muscles. In addition, absolute reliability (coefficient of variation [CV]) was low for all TMG parameters except for ½ Tr (CV = >20%), whereas measurement error indexes were high for this parameter. In conclusion, this study indicates that 3 of the TMG parameters (Dm, Td, and Tc) are highly reliable, whereas ½ Tr demonstrate insufficient reliability, and thus should not be used in future studies.

BACKGROUND: Available scientific data related to cardiac troponin I (cTnI) release after intermittent exercise is limited. It is also of interest to determine what personal or environmental factors mediate the exercise-induced release of cTnI. This study had two objectives: 1) to examine the individual release of cTnI to a basketball match; and 2) to establish the influence of athlete status as well as biological age on cTnI release. METHODS: Thirty-six basketball players (12 adult elite [PBA]: 27.3±4.1 years, 12 adult amateur [ABA]: 29.6±2.9 years, and 12 junior elite [JBA]: 16.6±0.9 years) participated in a simulated basketball match with serial assessment of cTnI at rest, immediately post- and at 1, 3, 6, 12, and 24 h post-exercise. RESULTS: The basketball match increased cTnI levels (pre: median [range]; 0.006 [0.001-0.026]; peak post: 0.024 [0.004-0.244] µg/L; p=0.000), with substantial individual variability in peak values. PBA and JBA players showed higher baseline and post-exercise cTnI values than ABA (all p<0.05). Peak cTnI exceeded the upper reference limit (URL) in the 26% of players (3 PBA; 6 JBA). CONCLUSIONS: The current results suggest that intermittent exercise can promote the appearance of cTnI and that this is potentially mediated by athlete status.

This study assessed the association of fitness and fatness with cognitive function in women with fibromyalgia, and the independent influence of their single components on cognitive tasks. A total of 468 women with fibromyalgia were included. Speed of information processing and working memory (Paced Auditory Serial Addition Task), as well as immediate and delayed recall, verbal learning and delayed recognition (Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test) were assessed. Aerobic fitness, muscle strength, flexibility and motor agility were assessed with the Senior Fitness Test battery. Body mass index, percent body fat, fat-mass index and waist circumference were measured. Aerobic fitness was associated with attention and working memory (all, p < 0.05). All fitness components were generally associated with delayed recall, verbal learning and delayed recognition (all, p < 0.05). Aerobic fitness showed the most powerful association with attention, working memory, delayed recall and verbal learning, while motor agility was the most powerful indicator of delayed recognition. None of the fatness parameters were associated with any of the outcomes (all, p > 0.05). Our results suggest that fitness, but not fatness, is associated with cognitive function in women with fibromyalgia. Aerobic fitness appears to be the most powerful fitness component regarding the cognitive tasks evaluated.

We compared the response of high-sensitivity cardiac troponin T (hs-cTnT) after 60 min of swimming, running and cycling in well-trained triathletes. The maximal increase in hs-cTnT was similar in all exercise bouts (swimming 453%, cycling 349% and running 471%) although there was substantial individual variability in peak hs-cTnT. The post-exercise kinetics for hs-cTnT was consistent. The change in hs-cTnT was correlated between trials. In all trials, hs-cTnT had largely returned to baseline levels 24 h post-exercise. In summary, an increase in hs-cTnT was apparent in all triathletes independent of exercise mode and despite variable peak data the consistent kinetics over 24 h post-exercise would suggest this represents a physiological phenomenon.

OBJECTIVES: To examine the agreement between objective (accelerometer) and subjective measures of sleep in fibromyalgia women (FW) and healthy women (HW). To identify explanatory variables of the discrepancies between the objective and subjective measures in FW and in HW. METHODS: 127 diagnosed FW and 53 HW filled the Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire (FIQ) and wore the SenseWear Pro Armband (SWA) for 7 days in order to assess sleep over the last week. Participants completed the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) when the SWA was returned. RESULTS: The SWA showed greater total duration (74 vs. 88 min/day) and average duration (7 vs. 9 min) of wake after sleep onset in FW compared with HW. The PSQI showed poorer sleep quality in all the variables studied in FW than in HW (all, p<0.001), except time in bed. There was a lack of inter-method agreement for total sleep time, sleep time without naps and sleep latency in FW. Age and educational status explained the inter-method mean difference in sleep time in FW. High discrepancy in sleep time between the SWA and the PSQI was related to higher FIQ scores (p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The objective measure only showed higher frequency and average duration of wake after sleep onset in FW compared with HW. The agreement between the SWA and the PSQI measures of sleep were poor in the FW group. Age, educational level and the impact of fibromyalgia might be explanatory variables of the inter-method discrepancies in FW.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Physical exercise is an important component in the management of pulmonary artery hypertension (PAH). The aim of this randomized controlled trial (RCT) is to determine the effects of an 8-week intervention combining muscle resistance, aerobic and inspiratory pressure load exercises in PAH outpatients. METHODS: The RCT will be conducted from September 2015 to September 2016 following the recommendations of the Consolidated Standards of Reported Trials (CONSORT), with a total sample size of n ≥ 48 (≥24 participants/group). We will determine the effects of the intervention on: (i) skeletal-muscle power and mass (primary end points); and (ii) NT-proBNP, cardiopulmonary exercise testing variables (VO2peak, ventilatory equivalent for CO2 at the anaerobic threshold (VE/VCO2 at the AT), end-tidal pressure of CO2 at the anaerobic threshold (PETCO2 at the AT), 6-min walking distance (6MWD), maximal inspiratory pressure (PImax), health-related quality of life (HRQoL), objectively-assessed spontaneous levels of physical activity, and safety (secondary end points). CONCLUSIONS AND PERSPECTIVES: This trial will provide insight into biological mechanisms of the disease and indicate the potential benefits of exercise in PAH outpatients, particularly on muscle power.

The aim of the present study was to assess the association of cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) with pressure pain sensitivity and clinical pain in women with fibromyalgia (FM). Thirty-one women with FM were included in the study. Pressure pain sensitivity was assessed with an electronic pressure dolorimeter. The average pressure pain threshold (PPT) from the 18 FM-related tender points and the tender points count (TPC) were recorded. Clinical pain was assessed on a 10-cm visual analog scale (VAS; from the FM impact questionnaire). The patients performed an incremental treadmill test, which consisted in six increasing workloads. Gas exchange was continuously monitored, and peak oxygen uptake (as measure of CRF) was recorded. Pairwise correlation and multiple linear regression were used to examine the association of CRF with PPT and VAS, and binary logistic regression assessed the odds of having <18 positive tender points as a function of CRF. The correlations of CRF with the average PPT and VAS were 0.355, (P < 0.001) and 0.058 (P > 0.05), respectively. Regression analyses revealed that CRF was associated with the PPT (B = 0.093; 95 % CI 0.064-0.122; P < 0.001; R (2) = 0.306) and TPC (OR 1.51; 95 % CI 1.30-1.75; P < 0.001) but not with VAS (B = 0.068; 95 % CI -0.061-0.197; P > 0.05). The findings of this study suggest that CRF is associated with pressure pain sensitivity but not with clinical pain in women with FM. Further longitudinal and intervention studies are needed to determine whether CRF could be involved in some mechanisms of pain processing.
