RESUMEN

The aim of this study was to investigate the association between physical activity (PA) and objective heart rate variability (HRV)-based stress and recovery with subjective stress in a longitudinal setting. Working-age participants (n = 221; 185 women, 36 men) were overweight (body mass index, 25.3-40.1 kg/m2 ) and psychologically distressed (≥3/12 points on the General Health Questionnaire). Objective stress and recovery were based on HRV recordings over 1-3 work days. Subjective stress was assessed with the Perceived Stress Scale and PA level with a questionnaire. Data were collected at three time points: baseline, 10 weeks post intervention, and at the 36-week follow-up. We adopted a latent growth model to investigate the initial level and change in PA, objective stress and recovery, and subjective stress at the three measurement time points. The results showed that initial levels of PA (P < 0.001) and objective stress (P = 0.001) and recovery (P < 0.01) were associated with the change in subjective stress. The results persisted after adjustment for intervention group. The present results suggest that high PA and objectively assessed low stress and good recovery have positive effects on changes in subjective stress in the long-term.

RESUMEN

This study investigated, in a multi-experiment design, the acute effects of milk protein ingestion, aging [50 young (approximately 26 years) vs. 45 older (approximately 61 years) men] and training state for the blood leukocyte and platelet responses acutely after a single bout of resistance exercise (RE). Moreover, basal effects of 21 weeks of resistance training (RT) were examined. The single bout of RE rapidly increased all blood leukocytes and platelets (P < 0.05). Protein ingestion before or before and after the RE bout did not have an effect on this response. However, younger men had a larger immediate exercise-induced response in leukocytes and platelets than older men. Basal fasting levels of leukocytes and platelets remained unchanged after 21 weeks of RT and this RT period did not change the acute RE-induced leukocyte and platelet response. The long-term RT was, however, able to slightly increase blood hematocrit. Blood platelet counts were consistently higher in the younger men when compared to the older men. Blood lymphopenia occurred only after a larger volume of exercise. In conclusion, the acute increase in blood leukocytes and platelets may be smaller in the older as when compared to the younger men. However, the number of immune cells and thus probably their function may not be affected by milk protein ingestion or months of resistance training.

RESUMEN

Plasma concentrations of hypoxanthine, uric acid, and allantoin, which are breakdown products of adenine nucleotides, were measured in Standardbred and Finnhorse trotters during and after an exercise test on a high-speed treadmill, after an incremental exercise test performed on a racetrack, and after a racing competition. Fiber-type composition of the middle gluteal muscle and the muscle concentrations of adenine nucleotides and inosine monophosphate were measured after the racetrack test. Changes in the concentration of hypoxanthine were not observed in any of the tests. Peak concentration of uric acid was measured between 5 and 30 minutes after exercise, and it was three- to tenfold higher than the value at rest. The variability can be explained by intensity of the exercise test and variation among horses. The concentration of allantoin after exercise was 2 to 3 times as high as that at rest, depending on the intensity of the exercise, although the absolute increase was about 10 times as high as the increase in the concentration of uric acid. Peak values of allantoin for the treadmill and the racetrack tests were obtained 4 to 6 minutes after exercise and < 30 minutes after the races. Peak concentration of allantoin correlated positively with the percentage of type-II (IIA+IIB) fibers in the middle gluteal muscle. Significant correlations were not observed between plasma concentration of uric acid or allantoin and muscle concentrations of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) or inosine monophosphate. It can be concluded that in horses, breakdown of ATP during and after exercise continues until allantoin is produced.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

RESUMEN

We present a new percutaneous ultrasound-guided galactography technique that may be used in patients in whom the conventional technique fails and breast ultrasonography show dilated ducts.

RESUMEN

The aim of the study was to evaluate the role of ultrasonography (US) in the management of jumper's knees. Sixty-two cases of clinically suggested jumper's knees, 52 asymptomatic contralateral knees and 100 asymptomatic knees of healthy middle aged men were examined. In the symptomatic group US was normal in 25 cases, all recovered with conservative therapy. In 31 symptomatic knees the findings were consistent with jumper's knee as a hypoechoic lesion located in the upper insertion of the patellar tendon in 23 cases and in the distal insertion in one case. In 7 cases the lesion was situated in the insertion of the quadriceps tendon. Surgery was performed on 20 knees and in all of them there was a lesion matching the lesion detected by US. In 6 cases US findings were pathologic, but different from jumper's knee. US findings consistent with jumper's knee could not be detected in the asymptomatic group.

RESUMEN

In order to reveal abnormalities in the soft tissue of the anterior part of the knee, caused by protracted mechanical stress, we performed ultrasound studies of both knees of 95 male workers in the carpet-laying and parquet floor trade (group 1). Seventy-three painters (group 2) served as controls. In group 1, an anechoic fluid collection was detected in 10 knees, localized in the superficial infrapatellar bursa and in one patient in the prepatellar bursa, whereas there were no cases of fluid accumulation in the controls. A hypoechoic, oval subcutaneous thickening in the anterior wall of the superficial infrapatellar bursa was detected in 35 (18.4%) and 4 (2.7%) knees, respectively. Prepatellar subcutaneous thickening was detected in 45 knees (23.7%) in group 1, but in only 2 knees (1.4%) in group 2. Two knees in group 1 had thickened and inhomogeneous patellar tendons, while one in group 2 had a thickened and 2 both thickened and hypoechoic patellar tendons. We conclude that ultrasonography is a useful method for the detection of bursitis and soft tissue changes in carpet-layers. Detection of a fluid collection in a bursa does not necessarily denote bursitis of clinical importance, but does signify irritation due to work stress. Patellar tendon pathology is rare among carpet-layers and is probably unrelated to the occupation.
