RESUMEN

Chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) in Senegal may use nocturnality to mitigate hyperthermia risk in semi-arid environments but the degree of nocturnality for such chimpanzees also in sympatry with large carnivores remains uncertain. We compared diel activity among chimpanzees and their potential predators at Assirik in Niokolo-Koba National Park and contextualized these findings relative to other unit-groups in savanna landscapes. From 2015-2018, we generated a predator inventory using multi-modal methods and monitored the diel activity of chimpanzees and predators with camera traps [ N = 2092 camera trap (CT) days]. From 2015-2023, we also surveyed for evidence of predation during recce walks. Six potential nonhuman predators occur at Assirik, including lions (Panthera leo), leopards (Panthera pardus), spotted hyenas (Crocuta crocuta), African wild dogs (Lycaon pictus), Nile crocodiles (Crocodylus niloticus), and rock pythons (Python sebae). We documented one suspected case of a predator killing a chimpanzee. Nocturnality comprised 12.7% of CT events for chimpanzees and these events were more concentrated at twilight. Chimpanzees were more active during the day, predators were more active at night, and there was substantial temporal overlap among chimpanzees and potential predators during twilight intervals. Our findings support the hypothesis that savanna chimpanzees in Senegal are active at night in response to the extremely hot environment. We hypothesize that Assirik chimpanzees experience a tension between decreasing hyperthermia and increasing predation risk during nocturnality.

The distribution of ticks is essentially determined by the presence of climatic conditions and ecological contexts suitable for their survival and development. We build a model that explicitly takes into account each physiological state through a system of infinite differential equations where tick population density are structured on an infinite discrete set. We suppose that intrastage development process is temperature dependent (Arrhenius temperatures function) and that larvae hatching and adult mortality are temperature and water vapor deficit dependent. We analysed mathematically the model and have explicit the [Formula: see text] of the tick population.

Chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) are the only great apes that inhabit hot, dry, and open savannas. We review the environmental pressures of savannas on chimpanzees, such as food and water scarcity, and the evidence for chimpanzees' behavioral responses to these landscapes. In our analysis, savannas were generally associated with low chimpanzee population densities and large home ranges. In addition, thermoregulatory behaviors that likely reduce hyperthermia risk, such as cave use, were frequently observed in the hottest and driest savanna landscapes. We hypothesize that such responses are evidence of a "savanna landscape effect" in chimpanzees and offer pathways for future research to understand its evolutionary processes and mechanisms. We conclude by discussing the significance of research on savanna chimpanzees to modeling the evolution of early hominin traits and informing conservation programs for these endangered apes.

We report here the first step by step anchoring of a W(≡CtBu)(CH2tBu)3 complex on a highly crystalline and mesoporous MOF, namely Zr-NU-1000, using a Surface Organometallic Chemistry (SOMC) concept and methodology. SOMC allowed us to selectively graft the complex on the Zr6 clusters and characterize the obtained single site material using state of the art experimental methods including extensive solid-state NMR techniques and HAADF-STEM imaging. Further FT-IR spectroscopy revealed the presence of a W═O moiety arising from the in situ reaction of the W≡CtBu functionality with the coordinated water coming from the 8-connected hexanuclear Zr6 clusters. All the steps leading to the final grafted molecular complex have been identified by DFT. The obtained material was tested for gas phase and liquid phase olefin metathesis and exhibited higher catalytic activity than the corresponding catalysts synthesized by different grafting methods. This contribution establishes the importance of applying SOMC to MOF chemistry to get well-defined single site catalyst on MOF inorganic secondary building units, in particular the in situ synthesis of W═O alkyl complexes from their W carbyne analogues.

As animal populations continue to decline, frequently driven by large-scale land-use change, there is a critical need for improved environmental planning. While data-driven spatial planning is widely applied in conservation, as of yet it is rarely used for primates. The western chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes verus) declined by 80% within 24 years and was uplisted to Critically Endangered by the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species in 2016. To support conservation planning for western chimpanzees, we systematically identified geographic areas important for this taxon. We based our analysis on a previously published data set of modeled density distribution and on several scenarios that accounted for different spatial scales and conservation targets. Across all scenarios, typically less than one-third of areas we identified as important are currently designated as high-level protected areas (i.e., national park or IUCN category I or II). For example, in the scenario for protecting 50% of all chimpanzees remaining in West Africa (i.e., approximately 26,500 chimpanzees), an area of approximately 60,000 km2 was selected (i.e., approximately 12% of the geographic range), only 24% of which is currently designated as protected areas. The derived maps can be used to inform the geographic prioritization of conservation interventions, including protected area expansion, "no-go-zones" for industry and infrastructure, and conservation sites outside the protected area network. Environmental guidelines by major institutions funding infrastructure and resource extraction projects explicitly require corporations to minimize the negative impact on great apes. Therefore, our results can inform avoidance and mitigation measures during the planning phases of such projects. This study was designed to inform future stakeholder consultation processes that could ultimately integrate the conservation of western chimpanzees with national land-use priorities. Our approach may help in promoting similar work for other primate taxa to inform systematic conservation planning in times of growing threats.

Updated information on Critically Endangered western chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes verus) in Senegal is urgently needed, given that gold mining is rapidly transforming landscapes and livelihoods. Specifically, biodiversity assessments will better elucidate the chimpanzee extinction risk here and yield baselines for monitoring. We compared mammal species richness between Fongoli (unprotected) and Assirik in Niokolo-Koba National Park to assess the efficacy of the only nationally protected area where chimpanzees range in this country. The primary habitat difference between these sites was the degree of human activity. Although Assirik and Fongoli had similar mammal assemblages and were equivalent in primate species richness, the protected area was higher in species richness overall, particularly for ungulates and carnivores. The protected status and management plan of Niokolo-Koba almost certainly resulted in fewer mammal extinctions. In unprotected areas, the flexible behavioural responses of chimpanzees to human-driven landscape dynamics is likely essential to their long-term survival. Furthermore, the near absence of chimpanzee killings in this country greatly facilitates conservation efforts. Given that mineral extraction is a key development strategy in Senegal, we encourage primatologists to collaborate with mining stakeholders to ensure that sustainability programming includes contributions from experts in savannah chimpanzee behavior and ecology.

Diaguiri is a non-protected area situated in south-eastern Senegal. Chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes verus) have been living here since 1999 but information on the characteristics of their nest sites have been lacking until now. Furthermore, we implemented nest survey methods recently standardised to arid landscapes during a national chimpanzee survey. Variations in nest decay rates are poorly understood in savanna-woodland mosaic habitats. This study aims to describe in Diaguiri: (1) the distribution of chimpanzee nests and the location of their core sleeping area, (2) the tree species used for nest building, (3) the association between nests and nesting tree heights, and (4) differences in nest decay rates between habitats. We surveyed 43 km of chimpanzee nesting habitats and recorded 871 nests in gallery forest and woodland habitats between March 2015 and June 2016. Diaguiri chimpanzees used at least 17 tree species for nest building, and 58.8% of nests were in only 3 tree species: Pterocarpus erinaceus, Anogeissus leiocarpus and Diospyros mespiliformis. Nest decay rate was faster in gallery forests than in woodlands. These data are of great value for understanding habitat use by a Critically Endangered subspecies of savanna chimpanzee, for population density estimates of the species and for conservation programmes in this region and in savanna biomes.

BACKGROUND: Sunitinib is one of the first-line standard treatments for metastatic clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) with a median time to progression shorter than 1 year. The objective is to discover predictive markers of response to adapt the treatment at diagnosis. METHODS: Prospective phase 2 multi-centre trials were conducted in ccRCC patients initiating sunitinib (54 patients) or bevacizumab (45 patients) in the first-line metastatic setting (SUVEGIL and TORAVA trials). The plasmatic level of CXCL7 at baseline was correlated with progression-free survival (PFS). RESULTS: The cut-off value of CXCL7 for PFS was 250 ng ml-1. Patients with CXCL7 plasmatic levels above the cut-off at baseline (250 ng ml-1) had a significantly longer PFS (hazard ratio 0.323 (95% confidence interval 0.147-0.707), P=0.001). These results were confirmed in a retrospective validation cohort. The levels of CXCL7 did not influence PFS of the bevacizumab-treated patients. CONCLUSIONS: CXCL7 may be considered as a predictive marker of sunitinib efficacy for ccRCC patients.

We present in this paper the first ultrastructural study of the spermatozoon of species of the genus Bianium Stunkard, 1930, namely Bianium plicitum and Bianium arabicum belonging to the family Lepocreadiidae. Specimens are parasites of the tetraodontid teleosts Lagocephalus laevigatus caught in the Atlantic Ocean and Lagocephalus sceleratus caught in Pacific Ocean, respectively. Live worms were fixed and processed for transmission electron microscopy. Observations of numerous cross and longitudinal sections of the spermatozoa of B. plicitum and B. arabicum demonstrated the general pattern described in all previously studied Lepocreadioidea, namely two axonemes with 9+ "1" pattern of Trepaxonemata, two mitochondria, a nucleus, parallel cortical microtubules, and an external ornamentation of the plasma membrane associated with spine-like bodies. The maximum number of cortical microtubules and the external ornamentation were not located at the anterior extremity of the spermatozoon but at a more posterior level, as in all the species of Lepocreadioidea studied to date. Differences observed between spermatozoa of B. plicitum and B. arabicum were observed in: (1) the location of the first mitochondrion, (2) size of cortical microtubules which were longer in B. arabicum than in B. plicitum, and (3) the order of the disappearance of the axonemes, mitochondrion, and cortical microtubules toward the posterior region of the spermatozoon. Only the nucleus reaches into the posterior extremity of the spermatozoon in these two species. The general pattern of the spermatozoon described in these two species exhibit the general model in the genus Bianium.

In the present paper, we describe the ultrastructure of the spermatozoon of the notocotylid Notocotylus noyeri (Joyeux, 1922) by means of transmission electron microscopy. The mature spermatozoon of N. noyeri exhibits the general pattern described in the majority of digeneans: two axonemes of the 9 + "1" pattern of the Trepaxonemata, nucleus, mitochondria, parallel cortical microtubules, spine-like bodies and ornamentation of the plasma membrane. The glycogenic nature of the electron-dense granules was evidenced applying the test of Thiéry. The ultrastructural features of the spermatozoon of N. noyeri present some differences in relation to those of the Pronocephalidea described until now, but confirm a general pattern for the Notocotylidae, namely a spermatozoon with two mitochondria and an anterior region with ornamentation of the plasma membrane associated with spine-like bodies. The posterior extremity of the spermatozoon exhibits only some microtubules after the disorganisation of the second axoneme. The present study confirms that some ultrastructural characters of the sperm cell such as the presence or absence of lateral expansions, the number of mitochondria and the morphology of both anterior and posterior spermatozoon extremities are useful for phylogenetic purposes within the Pronocephaloidea. Thus, unlike notocotylids, pronocephalids exhibit external ornamentation and a lateral expansion in the anterior spermatozoon region. Moreover, notocotylid spermatozoa present two mitochondria, whereas pronocephalid spermatozoa exhibit a single mitochondrion. Finally, pronocephalids are characterised by a type 2 posterior spermatozoon extremity, whereas notocotylids exhibit a type 3 posterior spermatozoon extremity.

INTRODUCTION: Contraceptive prevalence is low in Senegal, particularly in the Mbacké health district. The objective of this study was to identify the determinants of use of modern contraception by women of reproductive age in this district. METHODOLOGY: A quantitative and qualitative analytical study was conducted. The quantitative survey was conducted from 1st to 20 July 2011. The study population consisted of women of childbearing age living in the district. A two-stage survey was conducted. Data were entered and bivariate analysis was performed using Epi Info 3.3.5software. Multivariate analysiswas performed by R 2.2.9 software. The adjusted odds ratios were calculatedfor variables with significant p values. The qualitative study was conducted from 25 to 31 July2011. Grouped interviews were used to collect women's perceptions of modern contraception. Content analysis was performed. CONCLUSION: Improving the socio-economic characteristics of women and raising public awareness about modern contraception would contribute to a better use of modern contraceptives in the Mbacké health district.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the reliability of direct observation for measuring intrapartum care and compare this method with clinical audits using objective criteria based on patients' medical charts. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study, data collected by two independent evaluators. SETTING: Hospital in Dakar, Senegal. PARTICIPANTS: Thirty consecutive intrapartum care episodes provided by midwives and the corresponding medical charts. Outcome Measure The presence or absence of each of twelve criteria selected on the basis of national and international norms for monitoring of labour and delivery (six criteria) and the immediate postpartum period (six criteria). RESULTS: For direct observation, the labour and delivery mean quality scores ranged from 5.34 to 5.77. In contrast, for the chart-based method, the scores ranged from 0.32 to 0.45. For postpartum care evaluated only with direct observation, the scores were also high (5.21-5.65). For direct observation, inter-evaluator agreement was high: kappa coefficients varied from 0.78 to 0.93 depending on the criterion (total score ICC = 0.74). For the chart-based method, inter-evaluator agreement was also high: 0.66 to 1 (total score ICC = 0.72). Comparison of the two methods showed strong differences by items and subscores. CONCLUSION: Using direct observation, the quality of obstetric care was high for both the monitoring of labour and delivery and postpartum care. Both measurement instruments showed high reliability. The chart-based method underestimated the quality of care because of poor medical record documentation. Medical-record-based measurement may not be appropriate for the evaluation of the quality of obstetric care in Senegal and other low-income settings.

In Senegal, only 60% of mothers in rural areas deliver in health facilities. Mothers' satisfaction with their facility-based childbirth experience is one of the factors in their choosing to deliver in such facilities in subsequent pregnancies. The objective of this study was to assess whether compliance with childbirth care based on the mothers' perception of facility-based childbirth care contributes to the degree of maternal satisfaction. We conducted a secondary analysis of cross-sectional survey data collected from 259 mothers who had normal deliveries at facilities in rural areas of Senegal in 2011. The association between overall maternal satisfaction with childbirth care and 23 standard care survey items was assessed. The results showed that the degree of compliance with standard care and eight of 23 survey items were associated with maternal satisfaction. We conclude that to improve maternal satisfaction, facilities need to guarantee compliance with standard care.

INTRODUCTION: The objective of this study was to investigate the determinants of rape among minors in the Kolda region. METHODOLOGY: A retrospective, cross-sectional, descriptive and analytical was conducted from 23 December 1992 to 31 December 2011, based on the charts of rape victims under the age of 18 years. Sampling was complete. Bivariate and multivariate analyses were performed using Epi Info 3.3.2 and R 2.9.2 software, respectively. RESULTS: The study included 162 cases of sexual assault. The mean age of victims was 12.3 +/- 3 years (range: 4-17 years). The mean age of perpetrators of sexual assault was 26.4 +/- 9.5 years and minors accounted for 13% of perpetrators. 54.9% of victims, were raped. Victims of sexual assault knew the perpetrator in 66% of cases and were attacked in broad daylight in 53.4% of cases. The perpetrators were drunk at the time of sexual assault in 15.3% of cases. The assault took place in the bush (14.8%). Twenty eight percent (28%) of rapists were jailed and 38.6% of them were jailed for between 5 and 10 years. Sexual assault in the bush [adjusted OR = 3.46 (1.02-11.77)] and intoxication of the perpetrator at the time of sexual assault [adjusted OR = 3.47 (1.04-11.61)] were associated with a high risk of rape. In contrast, victims who knew their assailants were at a lower risk of rape [adjusted OR = 0.09 (0.03 to 0.24)]. CONCLUSION: Extension of this study to the national scale would provide health and judicial authorities with an overview of sexual assault among minors, to allow more effective prevention at the national level.

The Niokolo Koba National Park (NKNP) is the largest protected area in Senegal and lies at the northern limit of the chimpanzee's range in West Africa. Recent information on nesting behavior and factors influencing nesting behavior is available for several sites outside NKNP. However, the information available for NKNP is obsolete. Considering that the adequate management of chimpanzee populations cannot be achieved without strong scientific knowledge, it is essential to update data on chimpanzee, Pan troglodytes verus, nesting behavior in NKNP. For this reason, we surveyed their habitat in Mt. Assirik and recorded 626 chimpanzee nests. The results of the study showed that chimpanzees nest more often in closed-canopy habitats such as gallery forests. The average nest height observed in this study was 8.07 ± 0.36 m, varying between 2 and 20 m, which is well below the heights described in most sites where chimpanzees cohabit with large carnivores. Botanical surveys confirmed that chimpanzees select tree species bearing their nests. In Assirik, 12 of the 37 tree species bearing nests are the most used. The nest decay rate (or the time it takes for a nest to go from the fresh to the skeletal stage) at Assirik averaged 68.8 ± 5.8 days.

BACKGROUND: Despite global efforts to improve surgical care access, many low- and middle-income countries, especially in neurosurgery, face significant shortages. The Gambia exemplifies this, with only 1 fully qualified neurosurgeon serving its population of 2.5 million people. This scarcity results in higher morbidity and mortality. OBJECTIVE: We aim to document the history and current state of neurosurgery in the Gambia to raise awareness and promote neurosurgery development. METHODS: The study reviews the Gambia's health care system, infrastructure, neurosurgical history, workforce, disease burden, and progress, with information derived from reference sources as well as author experience and interviews with key partners in Gambian health care. RESULTS: Neurosurgery in the Gambia began in the 1970s, facing constraints due to competing health care demands. Significant progress occurred much later in the early 2010s, marked by the initiation of Banjul Neuro Missions and the establishment of a dedicated neurosurgery unit. We report significant progress with neurosurgical interventions in the past few years showcasing the unit's dedication to advancing neurosurgical care in the Gambia. However, challenges persist, including a lack of trained neurosurgeons, equipment shortages such as ventilators and diagnostic imaging. Financial barriers for patients, particularly related to the costs of computer tomography scans, pose significant hurdles, impacting the timely diagnosis and intervention for neurological conditions. CONCLUSIONS: Neurosurgery in the Gambia is progressing, but challenges like equipment scarcity hinder further progress. We emphasize the need for addressing cost barriers, improving infrastructure, and fostering research. Engaging the government and international collaborations are vital for sustained development in Gambian neurosurgery.

INTRODUCTION: Access to health care remains a major problem in Senegal, particularly among vulnerable groups such as the elderly. In 2006, the Senegalese government introduced a national plan for the provision of free health care known as "Plan Sésame" to improve access to care. The purpose of this study was to examine the current state of the "Plan Sésame" in national hospitals four years after its implementation (2006-2009). METHODS: A qualitative study using individual interviews was conducted between 15 March and 14 May 2010 among five target populations: hospital directors, health care providers, managers of the "Plan Sésame" in hospital admission services, management accountants, and beneficiaries. Content analysis was used. RESULTS: Between 2006 and 2008, hospital attendance rates increased every year. However, attendance rates began to decrease in 2009, except in the main hospital. The state has been left with a growing debt because of issues surrounding the reimbursement of expenses related to the "Plan Sésame'. As a result, national hospitals have been forced to restrict certain services included in the "Plan Sésame" and even to withdraw free health care for the elderly. These difficulties are likely to undermine the sustainability of the "Plan Sésame" CONCLUSION: The health authorities need to audit the "Plan Sésame:, to comply with standard procedures through regular monitoring and to redefine conditions of access.

OBJECTIVES: To understand the function of food sharing among our early hominin ancestors, we can turn to our nonhuman primate relatives for insight. Here, we examined the function of meat sharing by Fongoli chimpanzees, a community of western chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes verus) in southeastern Sénégal. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We tested three non-mutually exclusive hypotheses that have been used to explain patterns of food sharing: kin selection, generalized reciprocity, and meat-for-mating opportunities. We analyzed meat sharing events (n = 484) resulting from hunts, along with data on copulations, age-sex class, and kinship to determine which variables predict the likelihood of meat sharing during this study period (2006-2019). RESULTS: We found full or partial support for kin selection, direct reciprocity, and meat-for-mating-opportunities. However, the analyses reveal that reciprocity and a mother/offspring relationship were the strongest predictors of whether or not an individual shared meat. CONCLUSIONS: The results of this study emphasize the complexity of chimpanzee meat sharing behaviors, especially at a site where social tolerance offers increased opportunities for meat sharing by individuals other than dominant males. These findings can be placed in a referential model to inform hypotheses about the sensitivity of food sharing to environmental pressures, such as resource scarcity in savanna landscapes.

This study describes the ultrastructural organisation of the spermatozoon of a digenean Enodiotrema reductum (Pligiorchiida: Plagiorchiidae) from the green turtle Chelonia mydas (Linnaeus, 1758). This is the first report of E. reductum from Senegal. The mature spermatozoon of E. reductum is filiform and exhibits two axonemes of the 9 + "1" pattern of the Trepaxonemata, a nucleus, parallel cortical microtubules, an extramembranar ornamentation associated with spine-like bodies and granules of glycogen, among other ultrastructural features. The spermatozoon of E. reductum is distinguished by the presence of a moniliform mitochondrion composed of a bulge associated with a long cord and of a central cytoplasmic expansion. This work represents the first utrastructural study of any representative of the large family Plagiorchiidae. Our results are compared with previously published data on spermatozoa of other digenean taxa.
