RESUMEN

The micropylar region of endosperm in a seed, which is adjacent to the radicle tip, is called the 'endosperm cap', and is specifically activated before radicle emergence. This activation of the endosperm cap is a widespread phenomenon among species and is a prerequisite for the completion of germination. To understand the mechanisms of endosperm cap-specific gene expression in tomato seeds, GeneChip analysis was performed. The major groups of endosperm cap-enriched genes were pathogenesis-, cell wall-, and hormone-associated genes. The promoter regions of endosperm cap-enriched genes contained DNA motifs recognized by ethylene response factors (ERFs). The tomato ERF1 (TERF1) and its experimentally verified targets were enriched in the endosperm cap, suggesting an involvement of the ethylene response cascade in this process. The known endosperm cap enzyme endo-ß-mannanase is induced by gibberellin (GA), which is thought to be the major hormone inducing endosperm cap-specific genes. The mechanism of endo-ß-mannanase induction by GA was also investigated using isolated, embryoless seeds. Results suggested that GA might act indirectly on the endosperm cap. We propose that endosperm cap activation is caused by the ethylene response of this tissue, as a consequence of mechanosensing of the increase in embryonic growth potential by GA action.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To describe factors impacting receipt of mother's own milk (MOM) at discharge among California infants diagnosed with neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS). STUDY DESIGN: Cohort study of the California Perinatal Quality Care Collaborative's Maternal Substance Exposure Database for infants with NAS and gestational age ≥ 34 weeks from 2019 to 2020. RESULT: 245 infants with NAS were identified. Variables with an increased likelihood of being discharged on MOM included maternal medication assisted treatment (p = 0.001), use of maternal addiction services (p < 0.001), receiving donor human milk (p = 0.001), being treated in the well baby unit (p < 0.001), rooming-in (p < 0.001), and kangaroo care (p < 0.001). Among infants with NAS for whom MOM was recommended (n = 84), rooming-in was the only factor associated with being discharged on MOM (p = 0.002); receiving formula was the only inversely associated factor (p < 0.001). CONCLUSION: Results suggest supporting the mother-infant dyad and using non-pharmacologic treatment methods, such as rooming-in, increase receipt of MOM at discharge.

RESUMEN

The Asthma Therapy Assessment Questionnaire (ATAQ) for children and adolescents was developed to assist clinicians and health plans to identify children at risk for adverse outcomes of asthma. ATAQ is a brief, 20-item parent-completed questionnaire that generates indicators of potential care problems in several categories, including symptom control, behavior and attitude barriers, self-efficacy barriers, and communication gaps. This paper describes testing of the internal consistency and construct validity of the instrument. A cross-sectional mail survey with telephone follow-up was conducted with parents of 434 children aged 5-17 years being treated for asthma and enrolled in three managed care organizations in the Midwestern and Northeastern United States. ATAQ scales were evaluated using correlations with measures of health status, asthma impact, and healthcare utilization. ATAQ demonstrated good internal consistency and the hypothesized relationships to corresponding measures from existing instruments. Asthma control was significantly associated with measures of physical health, psychosocial health, resource use, and family impact. "Shared decision making," an indicator of patient-provider communication and involvement of the parent and child in developing asthma management plans, was significantly and positively associated with symptoms and parental satisfaction. Other ATAQ components showed similar associations. ATAQ appears to have satisfactory measurement properties and is ready for use to identify patients who might benefit from further disease management efforts or medical attention.
