RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To honor the legacy of John Senders, a distinguished member of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society, by a short, personal history of him, but then to honor his legacy by extending it through our own professional opinions, with an emphasis on the study of human error and its implications for healthcare systems-two topics in which he excelled. BACKGROUND: The authors are familiar with the topic and subject matter. One was a friend of Senders for over 50 years. Another was a collaborator and joint author with Senders (as well as his stepdaughter). All three authors have extensive publications in the topic areas. METHOD, RESULTS, AND CONCLUSION: The authors used personal accounts of interactions with Senders at conferences, experiences living and working with him, and a brief review of his most personal, notable publications in healthcare. The reflections indicate a strong resonance on Senders' contributions to system design that are relevant today in healthcare's most challenging period in its history.

RESUMEN

AUTONOMOUS CARS PROMISE to give us back the time we spend in traffic, improve the flow of traffic, reduce accidents, deaths, and injuries, and make personal car travel possible for everyone regardless of their abilities or condition. But despite impressive demonstrations and technical advances, many obstacles remain on the road to fully autonomous cars.20 Overcoming the challenges to enabling autonomous cars to safely operate in highly complex driving situations may take some time. Manufacturers already produce partially automated cars, and a spirited competition to deliver the most sophisticated ones is under way. Cars that provide high levels of automation in some circumstances (such as highway driving) have already arrived in the marketplace and promise to be in the hands of a large number of car owners in the next few years.

RESUMEN

A meta-analysis of oncology papers from around the world revealed that cancer patients who lived more than 50 miles away from hospital centers routinely presented with more advanced stages of disease at diagnosis, exhibited lower adherence to prescribed treatments, presented with poorer diagnoses, and reported a lower quality of life than patients who lived nearer to care facilities. Connected health approaches-or the use of broadband and telecommunications technologies to evaluate, diagnose, and monitor patients beyond the clinic-are becoming an indispensable tool in medicine to overcome the obstacle of distance.

RESUMEN

David Peakall and co-workers pioneered innovative approaches that utilized extra-embryonic membranes to assess accumulation of organochlorine pesticides in eggs. This technique provided the foundation for an entire line of research to improve non-lethal methods for assessing contaminant exposure in oviparous wildlife. Currently, analysis of chorioallantoic membranes (CAMs) provides predictable estimates of chlorinated contaminant presence in eggs and in maternal tissues. Field studies have been conducted with herons, stilts, alligators, crocodiles, and sea turtles. Controlled dose-response studies have been completed in chickens. The following manuscript presents the foundations for the CAM approach and a review of research findings involving this technique.
