RESUMEN

Electron beam lithography (EBL) stands out as a powerful direct-write tool offering nanometer-scale patterning capability and is especially useful in low-volume R&D prototyping when coupled with pattern transfer approaches like etching or lift-off. Among pattern transfer approaches, lift-off is preferred particularly in research settings, as it is cost-effective and safe and does not require tailored wet/dry etch chemistries, fume hoods, and/or complex dry etch tools; all-in-all offering convenient, 'undercut-free' pattern transfer rendering it useful, especially for metallic layers and unique alloys with unknown etchant compatibility or low etch selectivity. Despite the widespread use of the lift-off technique and optical/EBL for micron to even sub-micron scales, existing reports in the literature on nanofabrication of metallic structures with critical dimension in the 10-20 nm regime with lift-off-based EBL patterning are either scattered, incomplete, or vary significantly in terms of experimental conditions, which calls for systematic process optimization. To address this issue, beyond what can be found in a typical photoresist datasheet, this paper reports a comprehensive study to calibrate EBL patterning of sub-50 nm metallic nanostructures including gold nanowires and nanogaps based on a lift-off process using bilayer polymethyl-methacrylate as the resist stack. The governing parameters in EBL, including exposure dose, soft-bake temperature, development time, developer solution, substrate type, and proximity effect are experimentally studied through more than 200 EBL runs, and optimal process conditions are determined by field emission scanning electron microscope imaging of the fabricated nanostructures reaching as small as 11 nm feature size.

RESEARCH QUESTION: What are the emotional effects of infertility on patients, partners, or both, and how can qualitative thematic analyses and natural language processing (NLP) help evaluate textual data? DESIGN: A cross-sectional, multi-country survey conducted between March 2019 and May 2019. A total of 1944 patients, partners, or both, from nine countries responded to the open-ended question asking about their initial feelings related to an infertility diagnosis. A mixed-method approach that integrated NLP topic modelling and thematic analyses was used to analyse responses. Sentiment polarity was quantified for each response. Linear regression evaluated the association between patient characteristics and sentiment negativity. RESULTS: Common emotional reactions to infertility diagnoses were sadness, depression, stress, disappointment, anxiety, frustration, confusion and loss of self-confidence. NLP topic modelling found additional reactions, i.e. shared feelings with partners, recollections about causes of infertility and treatment experience. Responses to the open-ended question were brief (median: three words) with 71.8% conveying negative sentiments. Some respondent characteristics showed small but significant associations with sentiment negativity, i.e. country (Spain, China and France were more negative than the USA, P < 0.001, P < 0.003 and P < 0.009 respectively), treatment engagement (no treatment was more negative than one or more treatment, P = 0.027) and marital status (missing/other was more negative than divorced, P = 0.003). CONCLUSION: Infertility diagnoses create an emotional burden for patients and partners. The mixed-method approach provides a compelling synergy in support of the validity of these findings and shows potential for these techniques in future research.

OBJECTIVES: Estimates on the distribution of patients with multiple myeloma (MM) by line of therapy (LOT) are scarce and get outdated quickly as new treatments become available. The objective of this study was to estimate the number of patients with MM by LOT and the number of patients who have received at least 4 previous LOTs including proteasome inhibitors, immunomodulatory agents, and anti-CD38 monoclonal antibodies (mAbs). METHODS: A compartmental model was developed to calculate the number of patients by LOT. Two pathways were considered based on stem cell transplant eligibility, and at each pathway, treatments were stratified in 2 types: anti-CD38 mAbs or other. The model population was stratified into 4 subgroups based on age and cytogenetic risk. Model inputs were informed from real-world evidence. RESULTS: The model estimated that, in 2020, 126 869 patients were living with MM in the United States. Of these, 105 701 received treatment in any LOT, with 56 959, 27 252, 11 258, and 5217 in lines 1 to 4, respectively, and 5015 in line 5 or beyond. The model estimated that 3497 patients received at least 4 previous LOTs including proteasome inhibitors, immunomodulatory agents, and anti-CD38 mAbs. The model overall prevalence predictions aligned well with publicly available estimates. CONCLUSIONS: This study proposes a novel framework to estimate MM prevalence. It can assist clinicians to understand future trends in MM epidemiology, healthcare systems to plan for future resource use allocation, and payers to quantify the budget impact of new treatments.

BACKGROUND: Management of warfarin-associated major haemorrhage in prosthetic valve diseases is difficult as there is a fine line between haemorrhage and thrombosis. An individual's propensity towards thrombosis, such as pregnancy, makes this situation even more complicated. Cases like these are very rare in the literature. CASE PRESENTATION: A 26 weeks pregnant, gravida two, para one, 35-year-old patient with prosthetic aortic and mitral valves presented to an external emergency clinic with clouding of consciousness. Her international normalised ratio(INR) was 8.9 at presentation. Brain MRI revealed a left subdural haematoma with no significant mass effect. Warfarin treatment was discontinued. On the second day of follow-up, she was referred to our centre for further evaluation of her clinical deterioration. She was haemodynamically stable on admission to the intensive care unit and followed up with a stable condition until the fourth day when she developed right eye drop and subsequent loss of consciousness. Her haematoma was surgically evacuated, and her condition improved. Eventually, she and a healthy newborn were discharged. CONCLUSION: Intracranial haemorrhage during pregnancy is a relatively rare complication that requires a multidisciplinary management plan. Although the thrombogenic risk is high, it is vital to complete a reversal of warfarin anticoagulation in pregnant women with major bleeding.

Aim: To identify the difference in physical activity (PA) levels between individuals with and without cancer, and to estimate all-cause mortality associated with this difference. Methods: Current cancer, cancer survivor and cancer-free groups were identified from the UK Biobank. We used multivariate and Cox regression to estimate PA differences and association of PA with all-cause mortality. Results: Compared with the cancer-free individuals, participants in the two cancer groups had fewer minutes in moderate-to-vigorous PA per day in adjusted analyses. The PA difference was associated with higher mortality in the current cancer group. Conclusion: Patients with a history of cancer were less active than those without cancer, and PA is associated with increased mortality. PA improvement strategies in cancer patients must be explored.

PURPOSE: To assess the cost-effectiveness of a ceramide-infused skin barrier (CIB) versus other skin barriers (standard of care) among patients who have undergone ostomy creation. DESIGN: Cost-effectiveness analysis, based on a decision-analytic model that was estimated using data from the ADVOCATE (A Study Determining Variances in Ostomy Skin Conditions And The Economic Impact) trial, which investigated stoma-related healthcare costs over 12 weeks among patients who recently underwent fecal ostomy, and from other sources. SUBJECTS AND SETTING: Analysis was based on a hypothetical cohort of 1000 patients who recently underwent fecal ostomy; over a 1-year period, 500 patients were assumed to use CIB and 500 were assumed to use standard of care. METHODS: We adapted a previous economic model to estimate expected 1-year costs and outcomes among persons with a new ostomy assumed to use CIB versus standard of care. Outcomes of interest included peristomal skin complications (PSCs) (up to 2 during the 1-year period of interest) and quality-adjusted life days (QALDs); QALDs vary from 1, indicating a day of perfect health to 0, indicating a day with the lowest possible health (deceased). Subjects were assigned QALDs on a daily basis, with the value of the QALD on any given day based on whether the patient was experiencing a PSC. Costs included those related to skin barriers, ostomy accessories, and care of PSCs. The incremental cost-effectiveness of CIB versus standard of care was estimated as the incremental cost per PSC averted and QALD gained, respectively; net monetary benefit of CIB was also estimated. All analyses were run using the perspective of an Australian payer. RESULTS: On a per-patient basis, use of CIB was expected over a 1-year period to result in 0.16 fewer PSCs, an additional 0.35 QALDs, and a savings of A$180 (Australian dollars, US $137) in healthcare costs all versus standard of care. Management with CIB provided a net monetary benefit (calculated as the product of maximum willingness to pay for 1 QALD times additional QALDs with CIB less the incremental cost of CIB) of A$228 (US $174). Probabilistic sensitivity analysis was also completed; it revealed that 97% of model runs resulted in fewer expected PSCs with CIB; 92% of these runs resulted in lower expected costs with CIB. CONCLUSIONS: Findings suggest that the CIB is a cost-effective skin barrier for persons living with an ostomy.

Pulmonary embolism is a frequent and mortal situation especially in high-risk patients. Although thrombolytics and anticoagulants are the main options in treatment, substantial portion of patients also have high bleeding risk. Therefore, new catheter-directed treatment strategies, such as ultrasound-assisted transcatheter thrombolysis, gain importance in treatment options for intermediate and high-risk patients. Here, we report a case of massive pulmonary embolism due to the iatrogenic lymphocele after a radical retropubic prostatectomy procedure. The usage of ultrasound-assisted transcatheter thrombolysis was successful in such a high-risk patient.

BACKGROUND: Although sleep deprivation (SD) affects cardiovascular system in many ways, physio-pathological changes in cardiac chamber volume and function have not been described well. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of SD on left atrial (LA) and ventricular function with three-dimensional (3D) echocardiography. METHODS: Thirty-two healthy individuals (12 females, mean age 33.25 ± 8.18) were evaluated. Echocardiographic examination was performed once after a night of regular sleep and a night of sleep debt. Beside conventional parameters, 3D phasic volumes and function were measured using a commercially available 3D echocardiography system and offline analysis software. RESULTS: Mean sleep duration of the study group was 8.15 ± 2.19 h in the day of regular sleep and 2.56 ± 2.25 h in the day of sleep deprivation. There was a significant prolongation in deceleration time (180.83 ± 15.34 vs. 166.44 ± 26.12; p = 0.044) and increase in E/e' (6.95 ± 1.26 vs. 6.38 ± 0.85; p = 0.005). Among 3D measurements, the difference in left ventricular ejection fraction (EF), LA EF, LA reservoir function and LA active EF were not significant. Mean LA passive EF of the individuals was significantly lower after night shift (24.10 ± 7.66 vs. 31.49 ± 7.75; p = 0.006). CONCLUSION: Acute SD is associated with a reduction in LA passive emptying function in healthy adults. 3D-derived indices were sufficient to show subclinical diastolic dysfunction according to impairment in passive phase of LA ejection. Prospective large-scale studies are needed to enlighten this issue.

Arterial stiffness is associated with increased cardiovascular risk. Pulse wave velocity (PWV) and augmentation index (AIx) are non-invasive markers for assessment of arterial stiffness. Increased arterial stiffness is associated with atherosclerosis in patients with psoriasis. Previous studies have shown that high neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) predicts poor cardiovascular outcome. The aim of this study was to evaluate arterial stiffness and cardiovascular hemodynamics by oscillometric method in psoriasis patients with normal cardiac functions. Fifty consecutive patients with the diagnosis of psoriasis and 50 controls were included in the study. NLR was calculated as the ratio of neutrophil count to lymphocyte count. All patients underwent echocardiographic examination. Measurements of arterial stiffness were carried out using a Mobil-O-Graph arteriograph system. Fifty patients with psoriasis (26 male, mean age 43.3 ± 13.2 years) and 50 controls (33 male, mean age 45.0 ± 6.1 years) were included into the study. The distribution of cardiovascular risk factors was similar between the two groups, and NLR was significantly higher in patients with psoriasis (2.74 ± 1.78 versus 1.82 ± 0.52, p = 0.002). There was a weak correlation between NLR and PASI score without reaching statistical significance (r = 0.300, p = 0.060). While echocardiographic and hemodynamic parameters were comparable between psoriasis and control groups, heart rate was significantly higher in psoriasis group (81.5 ± 15.1 and 75.2 ± 11.8 beats/min, p = 0.021). Psoriasis patients had significantly higher AIx and PWV values as compared to controls (25.8 ± 13.1 versus 17.4 ± 12.3%, p = 0.001 and 6.78 ± 1.42 versus 6.18 ± 0.80 m/s, p = 0.011, respectively). AI and PWV were significantly associated with psoriasis when adjusted by heart rate (p = 0.005, odds ratio 1.04, 95% confidence interval 1.01-1.08 and p = 0.035, odds ratio 1.52, 95 % confidence interval 1.02-2.26, respectively). PWV significantly correlated with blood pressure, lipid levels, and several echocardiographic indices. AIx only correlated with left atrial diameter (r = 291, p = 0.040). Linear regression analysis was performed to find predictors of PWV. Central systolic blood pressure, left atrial diameter, and total cholesterol were independent predictors of PWV. PWV and AIx were significantly higher in patients with psoriasis. Assessment of arterial stiffness parameters may be useful for early detection of cardiovascular deterioration in psoriasis patients with normal cardiac functions. Novel inflammatory biomarkers such as NLR may elucidate the mechanism of vascular dysfunction in such patients.

BACKGROUND: Sleep deprivation (SD) is known to be associated with increased incidence of adverse cardiovascular events, but underlying pathophysiological mechanism has not been clearly demonstrated. Autonomic nervous system plays an important role in the regulation of cardiovascular function, and impairment in this system is associated with increased cardiovascular mortality. The aim of the current study was to investigate the effect of acute SD on autonomic regulation of cardiac function by determining heart rate recovery (HRR). METHODS: Twenty-one healthy security officers and nine nurses (mean age 33.25 ± 8.18) were evaluated. Treadmill exercise test was applied once after a night with regular sleep and once after a night shift in hospital. The HRR was calculated as the reduction in heart rate from peak exercise to the 30th second (HRR30), 1st minute (HRR1), 2nd minute (HRR2), 3rd minute (HRR3), and 5th minute (HRR5). The change in blood pressure (BP) measurements was also determined. RESULTS: Exercise capacity of individuals with SD was significantly lower (10.96 ± 1.01 vs. 11.71 ± 1.30 metabolic equivalent task (MET)s; p = 0.002), and peak systolic BP was significantly higher (173.8 ± 16.3 vs. 166.2 ± 9.9; p = 0.019). There was a signicant difference in HRR30 (12.74 ± 6.19 vs. 17.66 ± 5.46; p = 0.003) and HRR1 (31 ± 6.49 vs. 36.10 ± 7.78; p = 0.004). The ratio of these indices to peak HR was also significantly lower with SD (HRR%30 8.04 ± 4.26 vs. 10.19 ± 3.21; p = 0.025 and HRR%1: 18.66 ± 4.43 vs. 20.98 ± 4.72; p = 0.013). The difference in other indices of HRR was not significant. CONCLUSION: Our findings suggest that SD blunts cardiovascular autonomic response, and consequences of this relation might be more pronounced in subjects who are exposed to sleeplessness regularly or in subjects with baseline cardiovascular disease.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have shown that depression and anxiety were independent risk factors for hypertension. Non-dipper hypertension is associated with higher cardiovascular mortality. The aim of this study was to evaluate the anxiety and depression scores in patients with dipper and non-dipper hypertension. METHODS: The study sample consisted of 153 hypertensive patients. All patients underwent 24-h blood pressure monitoring. Patients were classified into two groups according to their dipper or non-dipper hypertension status. We evaluated results of the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale between groups. RESULTS: Seventy-eight patients (38 male, mean age: 51.6 ± 12.5 years) had dipper hypertension while 75 patients (27 male, mean age: 55.4 ± 14.1 years) had non-dipper hypertension (p = 0.141, 0.072, respectively). Clinical characteristics were similar for both groups. Patients with non-dipper hypertension had significantly higher depression and anxiety scores compared to patients with dipper hypertension. Dipper and non-dipper status significantly correlated with anxiety (p: 0.025, r: 0.181) and depression score (p: 0.001, r: 0.255). In univariate analysis, smoking, alcohol usage, presence of diabetes, hyperlipidemia, anxiety score >8 and depression score >7 were predictors of dipper versus non-dipper status. In multivariate logistic regression analyses only depression score >7 was independent predictor of dipper versus non-dipper status (odds ratio: 2.74, confidence intervals: 1.41-5.37). A depression score of 7 or higher predicted non-dipper status with a sensitivity of 62.7% and specificity of 62.8%. CONCLUSION: Non-dipper patients have significantly higher anxiety and depression scores compared to dipper patients. Evaluation of anxiety and depression in patients with hypertension might help to detect non-dipper group and hence guide for better management.

BACKGROUND: The primary purpose of this study was to investigate adult-child caregiver burden in heart failure (HF) patients. Secondary purpose of the study was to identify the possible influencing factors for caregiver burden and depressive symptoms in a young adult-child caregiver group. METHODS: A total of 138 adult-child caregivers and 138 patients with HF participated in this study. Caregivers' burden, depressive symptoms, and anxiety levels were assessed by using Zarit Caregiver Burden Scale (ZCBS), Beck Depression Inventory, and State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, respectively. RESULTS: The mean ZCBS scores of the female caregivers were significantly higher than male caregivers. Approximately one-third of the adult-child caregivers had at least mild depressive symptoms. Caregivers with higher depressive symptoms had higher levels of caregiver burden. There were positive correlations between caregiving time, severity of depressive symptoms, and perceived caregiver burden. There was a negative correlation between education level of caregivers and perceived caregiver burden. Age, socioeconomic level, and marital status of patients were affecting factors for depressive symptoms in caregivers. Among caregiver characteristics, gender, marital status, and ZCBS scores seem to influence the depression in caregivers. CONCLUSIONS: The study findings suggest significant levels of burden and depressive symptoms even in adult-child caregivers of HF patients.

Coronary in-stent restenosis (ISR) remains a challenge in interventional cardiology. We investigated the relationship between angiographic pre-interventional grade of lesion stenosis (LS) and the prognosis of late ISR. After exclusions, 110 patients with ISR and 109 patients without ISR were compared. In the ISR group, the grade of LS was greater (P < .001) and the length of the critical segment (LCS) was longer (P < .001). Stent length was longer in the ISR group (P = .008). Compared with the LCS, the grade of LS above 87.5% is 6.9 times more predictive of ISR than the LCS >10.5 mm. Kaplan-Meier curve analysis showed that the grade of initial LS >87.5% had a higher ISR rate than the grade of LS <87.5% (log-rank test P < .001) and critical lesion length over 10.5 mm had a higher ISR rate than critical lesion length under 10.5 mm (log-rank test P < .001). The present study found that the angiographic pre-interventional grades of LS and LCS were important predictors of ISR. Pre-interventional angiographic stenosis >87.5% was significantly predictive of late ISR.

BACKGROUND: Amivantamab, an EGFR-MET bispecific antibody, is the first approved targeted therapy for patients with EGFR Ex20ins NSCLC after prior platinum-based chemotherapy-a population with historically poor outcomes before amivantamab approval. As antitumor activity in single-arm studies typically focuses on responders, the evaluation of outcomes in patients with stable disease (SD) as best response is of clinical interest. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Among 114 patients with post-platinum EGFR Ex20ins NSCLC in CHRYSALIS (NCT02609776; data cutoff: March 30, 2021), response was assessed by blinded independent central review via RECIST v1.1. Patients alive and receiving therapy at 12 weeks were grouped by response at this landmark: partial or complete response (PR+), SD, or progressive disease (PD). Progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) by response cohort were determined using the Kaplan-Meier method; hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) between response cohorts were calculated using Cox proportional hazards regression. RESULTS: Among patients alive and receiving therapy at 12 weeks (n=107), 42 (39%) had PR+, 52 (49%) had SD, and 13 (12%) had PD. Among patients with PR+ and SD, median PFS was 12.2 and 7.0 months, respectively. A corresponding improvement in OS was observed in patients achieving PR+ (median: not reached; HR vs PD=0.21 [95% CI: 0.08-0.54]) and SD (median: 23.0 months; HR vs PD=0.33 [95% CI: 0.14-0.77]), relative to those with PD (median: 14.0 months). CONCLUSION: SD was observed in 49% of patients receiving amivantamab, with corresponding increases in OS that dramatically improved the prognoses of this patient population.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the incidence of total aflatoxin (AF), ochratoxin A, T-2 toxin, deoxynivalenol (DON), zearalenone (ZEA), and fumonisin (FB) in dairy cattle, beef cattle, and lamb-calf feeds. A total of 180 dairy cattle, beef cattle, and lamb-calf feeds (60 samples each) were randomly collected from farms, feed mills, and villages in Burdur province, between September 2006 and August 2007. All samples were analyzed by the competitive Enzyme Linked Immuno Sorbent Assay (ELISA). The most frequent mycotoxin detected was total AF, which was found in 108 samples (60 %) in concentrations ranging from 3.82 to 116.83 µg kg(-1), followed by DON that was detected in 87 samples (48.3 %), in concentrations ranging from 18.50 to 500 µg kg(-1). Ochratoxin A (OTA), T-2 toxin, ZEA, and FB were found in 84 (46.7 %), 85 (47.2 %), 57 (31.7 %), and 19 (10.6 %) samples, respectively, in concentrations of 1.01 to 15.85 µg kg(-1) for OTA, 3.85 to 52.36 µg kg(-1) for T-2 toxin, 2.10 to 29.30 µg kg(-1) for ZEA, and 2.69 to 4.96 mg kg(-1) for FB. It was concluded that feed samples in Burdur province were contaminated by mycotoxins, and the levels of total aflatoxin in the samples were considered a risk to animal health.

BACKGROUND: Systemic inflammation is a risk factor for premature coronary artery disease (CAD), and systemic immune-inflammation index (SII), a new marker of systemic inflammation, is linked to the severity and prognosis of CAD. However, the prognosis of the SII in bypass patients' venous saphenous grafts has not been adequately evaluated. This study aimed to evaluate the prognostic value of SII in predicting premature saphenous vein graft disease (SVGD) in patients who underwent bypass surgery with venous saphenous grafts. METHODS: We retrospectively included 422 patients who had saphenous vein grafts (SVG) at least one year after bypass surgery. Of these, 222 patients had SVGD, and 200 had patent SVG. RESULTS: SII was higher in the SVGD group than in the control group (631.55 ± 397.84, 421.71 ± 351.07, P=0.001). A receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis was performed to identify the optimal cutoff point with the highest sensitivity and specificity. The optimal cutoff point for SII was defined as 430. Using a cutoff level of >430, SII predicted SVGD with a sensitivity of 73% and specificity of 56%. CONCLUSION: Our study demonstrated that SII was substantially higher in patients with SVGD than in those with patent SVG. SII predicted SVGD in bypass surgery patients. SII may be a helpful parameter for identifying patients at high risk of SVGD and guiding preventive treatments.

PURPOSE: In this prospective study we aimed to determine the rate of Fabry Disease (FD) in patients with left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH), and to evaluate the clinical presentations of patients with FD in a comprehensive manner. In addition, we aimed to raise awareness about this issue by allowing early diagnosis and treatment of FD. METHODS: Our study was planned as national, multicenter, observational. Totally 22 different centers participated in this study. A total of 886 patients diagnosed with LVH by echocardiography (ECHO) were included in the study. Demographic data, biochemical parameters, electrocardiography (ECG) findings, ECHO findings, treatments and clinical findings of the patients were recorded. Dry blood samples were sent from male patients with suspected FD. The α-Gal A enzyme level was checked and genetic testing was performed in patients with low enzyme levels. Female patients suspected of FD were genetically tested with the GLA Gene Mutation Analysis. RESULTS: FD was suspected in a total of 143 (16.13%) patients included in the study. The α-Gal-A enzyme level was found to be low in 43 (4.85%) patients whom enzyme testing was requested. GLA gene mutation analysis was positive in 14 (1.58%) patients. Male gender, E/e' mean ,and severe hypertrophy are important risk factor for FD. CONCLUSION: In daily cardiology practice, FD should be kept in mind not only in adult patients with unexplained LVH but also in the entire LVH population. Dry blood test (DBS) should be considered in high-risk patients, and mutation analysis should be considered in required patients.

OBJECTIVE: Fragmented QRS (fQRS) has been shown to be related to coronary heart disease, heart failure, hypertension, cardiac arrhythmia, and metabolic syndrome. Although fQRS in lateral leads is shown to be associated with a poor outcome in patients with a known cardiac disease, the knowledge about the significance and prevalence of fQRS in inferior leads is scarce. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and predictors of fQRS in inferior leads in healthy young men. METHODS: A total of 1,155 men underwent electrocardiography (ECG), hepatic ultrasonography, and routine biochemical tests. A total of 210 eligible men with fQRS in inferior leads (group 1) and 770 eligible men without fQRS in inferior leads (group 2) were compared with each other in terms of clinical, demographic, and laboratory parameters. RESULTS: The prevalence of fQRS in inferior leads was found to 21.4%. Body mass index (BMI), systolic blood pressure (BP), creatinine, and alanine aminotransferase levels; non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) percentage; and interventricular septum thickness (IVST) were significantly greater in group 1 than those in group 2. BMI, IVST, NAFLD, creatinine, ALT, and systolic BP were entered in a model of multiple regression analyses to predict fQRS, a dependent variable. NAFLD was the best independent predictor of fQRS (ß=6.115, p=0.001). BMI (ß=1.448, p=0.014) and IVST (ß=1.058, p=0.029) were the other independent predictors of fQRS in inferior leads. CONCLUSION: This study demonstrated the association of fQRS in inferior leads with NAFLD, BMI, and IVST in young men.

BACKGROUND: COVID-19 is associated with vascular thrombosis in critical patients. However, warfarin has not been adequately studied in patients with COVID-19. This study aimed to evaluate whether the use of warfarin, a potent oral anticoagulant, was of clinical benefit in patients with COVID-19. METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort study of COVID-19 patients diagnosed at 3 different centers in Turkey between April 2020 and April 2021. Patients were grouped by whether they were taking warfarin or not. Propensity score matching analysis was used to compare the dif ferences between the groups in mortality, hospitalization, and admission to the intensive care unit. RESULTS: A propensity score analysis was performed on 128 patients in the warfarin group and 372 patients in the control group. After matching, 84 pairs of patients were compared. The patients in the control group were more likely to be admitted to the intensive care unit (33.3% vs. 14.3%, respectively; P=.007) and had longer hospital stays than the warfarin group (7.1 vs. 14.1 days; P=.005). The warfarin group had a lower death rate compared to the control group (7.1% vs. 27.4%, respectively; P=.001), and surviving patients were sig nificantly more likely to be in the warfarin group than the control group (56.1% vs. 20.7%, respectively; P=.001). In patients on warfarin, there was a lower incidence of in-hospital death (log-rank test P=.005). CONCLUSIONS: Warfarin therapy could provide clinical benefits in patients with COVID-19. The current data highlight the importance of potent anticoagulation in the treatment of COVID-19.
