RESUMEN

In this study, the prevalence, genotype frequency, and risk factors for HBV infection in 768 HIV-infected subjects living in Piauí were determined. Forty-six (6.0 %) HIV-positive subjects were reactive for HBsAg and positive for HBV-DNA. Genotypes A (71.8 %), F (23.9 %) and D (4.3 %) were identified. Multivariate analysis revealed an association between HIV-HBV coinfection and male gender, older age groups, unprotected sex, reporting more than ten sexual partners throughout life, STD, and tattooing. This study shows the importance of monitoring sites and professionals who perform tattooing and practice safe sex to prevent the spread of HIV and HBV infections.

RESUMEN

In this study, the prevalence, genotypic frequency, and risk factors for HCV infection in 768 patients infected with HIV were determined. Fifty-two (6.77 %) HIV-positive individuals had anti-HCV antibodies and 26 (3.39 %) had HCV-RNA. Genotyping results indicated that all RT-PCR samples from patients infected with HCV belonged to genotype 1. Multivariate analysis revealed an association of HIV-HCV coinfection with drug use and having received blood transfusions before 1994. The relatively low prevalence of HCV infection in the HIV-positive population in that region may be a consequence of the small number of drug users in the sample, despite a strong association between HCV infection and drug use.

RESUMEN

This study aimed to describe the epidemiological, immunological and molecular features of infection by the human T-lymphotropic virus-1/2 (HTLV-1/2) in individuals with HIV-1 in an urban area of Piaui State, Brazil. Exclusion criteria included patients under 18 years of age, pregnant women or Amerindians. Of 805 individuals analyzed by the serological method (ELISA) for the detection of anti-HTLV-1/2, 18 (2.24%) were positive, but only 13 (1.61%) were confirmed by PCR. The RFLP analysis revealed that nine (1.12%) of these subjects were positive for HTLV-1 and four (0.5%) for HTLV-2. The mean age of these co-infected individuals was 50.9±9.1 years, and a significant association was found with age (above 40 years: p = 0.002), minor surgeries (p = 0.004) and blood transfusion (p = 0.031). Quantification of the T CD4+/CD8+ lymphocytes and the HIV-1 viral load showed no significant association of T CD8 + lymphocyte levels with co-infection in the patients with HIV-1/HTLV-1. The sequencing of the LTR region and phylogenetic analysis indicated that the nine HTLV-1 strains belong to the Transcontinental subgroup of the Cosmopolitan group (1a), with a 83% (neighbor-joining) bootstrap value. The HTLV-2 strains were identified as subtype HTLV-2c, supported by a bootstrap value of 79%. Further studies in other population subgroups, such as blood donors and drug users, will be necessary to clarify the dissemination of HTLV-1/2 in Piau and elucidate the developmental profile of the virus in the region.

RESUMEN

The most highly prevalent inherited disease in Brazil and in the world, sickle cell anemia, is considered a public health problem. Characterized by homozygosis for the hemoglobin S gene, the individual has a range of signs and symptoms that require careful treatment. The sickle cell trait is characterized by heterozygosis for the hemoglobin S gene, however the carrier does not express the disease. In the current study we aimed at verifying the presence of the sickle cell trait in 1000 blood donors of the Hematology and Hemotherapy Center of the State of Piauí (Hemopi) in the period from October 2007 to April 2008. After analysis by alkaline and acid electrophoresis, positive cases were confirmed by molecular biology. We obtained rates of 3.4 percent for hemoglobin AS and 5 percent for hemoglobin AC, with a total frequency of 3.9 percent in the total of 1,000 blood donors.
