RESUMEN

Emerging conservation efforts for the world's large predators may, if successful, restore natural predator-prey interactions. Marine reserves, where large predators tend to be relatively common, offer an experimental manipulation to investigate interactions between large-bodied marine predators and their prey. We hypothesized that southern stingrays-large, long-lived and highly interactive mesopredators-would invest in anti-predator behavior in marine reserves where predatory large sharks, the primary predator of stingrays, are more abundant. Specifically, we predicted southern stingrays in marine reserves would reduce the use of deep forereef habitats in the favor of shallow flats where the risk of shark encounters is lower. Baited remote underwater video was used to survey stingrays and reef sharks in flats and forereef habitats of two reserves and two fished sites in Belize. The interaction between "protection status" and "habitat" was the most important factor determining stingray presence. As predicted, southern stingrays spent more time interacting with baited remote underwater videos in the safer flats habitats, were more likely to have predator-inflicted damage inside reserves, and were less abundant in marine reserves but only in the forereef habitat. These results are consistent with a predation-sensitive habitat shift rather than southern stingray populations being reduced by direct predation from reef sharks. Our study provides evidence that roving predators can induce pronounced habitat shifts in prey that rely on crypsis and refuging, rather than active escape, in high-visibility, heterogeneous marine habitats. Given documented impacts of stingrays on benthic communities it is possible restoration of reef shark populations with reserves could induce reef ecosystem changes through behavior-mediated trophic cascades.

The sensitivity of an infrared imaging video bolometer (IRVB) was improved for the measurement of relatively low energy plasma radiation from the viewpoint of the metal foil absorber material. The photon energy of the radiation was considered up to 1 keV for the divertor plasma measurement. The thickness of the foil absorber was evaluated not only for conventional heavy elements, e.g., platinum, but also for light elements by the relation between the photon energy and attenuation length and by mechanical strength. A heat-transfer calculation using ANSYS suggested that light elements with practical foil thickness provide a higher temperature rise of the foil absorber compared with heavier elements with practical foil thickness. The maximum of the temperature rise was evaluated using He-Ne laser irradiation onto absorber samples. The material dependence of the temperature rise has a similar tendency between calculations and experiments. Experimentally, the sensitivity of the IRVB improved from 280 to 110 µW/cm2 using titanium with 1 µm thickness compared with conventional platinum with 2.5 µm thickness. Consequently, the signal-to-noise ratio of the IRVB could be improved from 2.8 to 9.1.

Diagnosing the amount of radiated power is an important research goal for fusion devices. This research aims at better understanding and diagnosing the radiated power from the Large Helical Device (LHD). The current radiated power estimate in the LHD is based on one wide-angle resistive bolometer. Because the estimate stems from one bolometer location toroidally and has a wide-angle poloidal view, this estimate does not take into account toroidal and poloidal radiation asymmetries that are observed in the LHD in discharges with gas puffing. This research develops a method based on the EMC3-Eirene model to calculate the set of coefficients for a weighted-sum method of estimating the radiated power. This study calculates these coefficients by using a least-squares method to solve for a coefficient set, using a variety of simulated cases generated by the EMC3-Eirene model, combined with corresponding geometric radiated power density considerations. If this set of coefficients is multiplied by the detector signal of each bolometer and summed up, this gives a total radiated power estimate. This new estimate takes into account toroidal and poloidal asymmetries by using the bolometer channels viewing different toroidal and poloidal locations, thereby reducing the estimation error and providing information about toroidal asymmetries.

Rapid increases in nitrogen (N) loading are occurring in many tropical watersheds, but the fate of N in tropical streams is not well documented. Rates of nitrate uptake and denitrification were measured in nine tropical low-order streams with contrasting land use as part of the Lotic Intersite Nitrogen eXperiment II (LINX II) in Puerto Rico using short term (24-hour) additions of K(15)NO3 and NaBr. Background nitrate concentrations ranged from 105 to 997 microg N/L, and stream nitrate uptake lengths were long, varying from 315 to 8480 m (median of 1200 m). Other indices of nitrate uptake (mass transfer coefficient, V(f) [cm/s], and whole-stream nitrate uptake rate, U [microg N m(-2) s(-1)]) were low in comparison to other regions and were related to chemical, biological, and physical parameters. Denitrification rates were highly variable (0-133 microg N m(-2) min(-1); median = 15 microg N m(-2) min(-1)), were dominated by the end product N2 (rather than N2O), and were best predicted by whole-stream respiration rates and stream NO3 concentration. Denitrification accounted for 1-97% of nitrate uptake with five of nine streams having 35% or more of nitrate uptake via denitrification, showing that denitrification is a substantial sink for nitrate in tropical streams. Whole-stream nitrate uptake and denitrification in our study streams closely followed first-order uptake kinetics, indicating that NO3 uptake is limited by delivery of substrate (NO3) to the organisms involved in uptake or denitrification. In the context of whole-catchment nitrogen budgets, our finding that in-stream denitrification results in lower proportional production of N2O than terrestrial denitrification suggests that small streams can be viewed as the preferred site of denitrification in a watershed in order to minimize greenhouse gas N2O emissions. Conservation of small streams is thus critical in tropical ecosystem management.

The use of a combination of the stable isotopes of sulfur, carbon, and nitrogen allows the flow of organic matter and trophic relations in salt marshes and estuaries to be traced while eliminating many ambiguities that accompany the use of a single isotopic tracer. Salt-marsh grasses take up the isotopically light sulfides formed during sulfate reduction, and the transfer of this light sulfur through the marsh food web is illustrated with data on the ribbed mussel (Geukensia demissa) from various locations in a New England marsh. The multiple isotope approach shows that this filter feeder consumes both marsh grass ( Spartina) detritus and plankton, with the relative proportions of each determined by the location of the mussels in the marsh.

A study of effects of terrestrial biota on the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere suggests that the global net release of carbon due to forest clearing between 1860 and 1980 was between 135 x 10(15) and 228 x 10(15) grams. Between 1.8 x 10(15) and 4.7 x 10(15) grams of carbon were released in 1980, of which nearly 80 percent was due to deforestation, principally in the tropics. The annual release of carbon from the biota and soils exceeded the release from fossil fuels until about 1960. Because the biotic release has been and remains much larger than is commonly assumed, the airborne fraction, usually considered to be about 50 percent of the release from fossil fuels, was probably between 22 and 43 percent of the total carbon released in 1980. The increase in carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is thought by some to be increasing the storage of carbon in the earth's remaining forests sufficiently to offset the release from deforestation. The interpretation of the evidence presented here suggests no such effect; deforestation appears to be the dominant biotic effect on atmospheric carbon dioxide. If deforestation increases in proportion to population, the biotic release of carbon will reach 9 x 10(15) grams per year before forests are exhausted early in the next century. The possibilities for limiting the accumulation of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere through reduction in use of fossil fuels and through management of forests may be greater than is commonly assumed.

Continuous enrichment of an arctic river with only 10 parts per billion phosphate-phosphorus caused an immediate growth of attached algae for more than 10 kilometers downstream, showing that phosphorus alone limited photosynthesis. As a result of the increased photosynthesis, there was an increase in bacterial activity in films on rocks on the bottom of the stream. The major source of energy became the photosynthetic carbon fixed in the stream rather than the organic material entering from the surrounding tundra, and the overall metabolism of the stream shifted from heterotrophy to autotrophy. An increase in the size and developmental stage of some of the dominant aquatic insects illustrates the food limitation in this nutrient-poor habitat.

A comparative (15)N-tracer study of nitrogen dynamics in headwater streams from biomes throughout North America demonstrates that streams exert control over nutrient exports to rivers, lakes, and estuaries. The most rapid uptake and transformation of inorganic nitrogen occurred in the smallest streams. Ammonium entering these streams was removed from the water within a few tens to hundreds of meters. Nitrate was also removed from stream water but traveled a distance 5 to 10 times as long, on average, as ammonium. Despite low ammonium concentration in stream water, nitrification rates were high, indicating that small streams are potentially important sources of atmospheric nitrous oxide. During seasons of high biological activity, the reaches of headwater streams typically export downstream less than half of the input of dissolved inorganic nitrogen from their watersheds.

An infrared imaging video bolometer was improved for application to a neutron environment in fusion plasma devices, i.e., the Large Helical Device (LHD). In order to calibrate the thermal characteristics of the activated foil absorber inside the plasma vacuum vessel, the remote-controlled in situ calibration system was improved with high-surface-flatness mirrors. Furthermore, the carbon coating method was improved by introducing a vacuum evaporation technique instead of the conventional spray technique to realize the coating on both sides of the absorber with reproducibility and uniformity. The optimal thickness of the coating was also determined. Owing to these coating improvements, the reproducibility of the effective emissivity on both sides especially was improved. Finally, the variation with the neutron irradiation of the thermal characteristics of the foil absorber was investigated. It was found that the effect was not significant for the total neutron emission of 3.6 × 1018 on LHD.

A prototype of an infrared imaging bolometer (IRVB) was successfully tested on the Alcator C-Mod tokamak at the end of its 2016 campaign. The IRVB method interprets the power radiated from the plasma by measuring the temperature rise of a thin, ∼2 µm, Pt absorber that is placed in the torus vacuum and exposed, using a pinhole camera, to the full-spectrum of plasma's photon emission. The IRVB installed on C-Mod viewed the poloidal cross section of the core plasma and observed Ohmic and ion cyclotron range of frequency (ICRF)-heated plasmas. Analysis of total radiated power and on-axis emissivity from IRVB is summarized, and quantitative comparisons made to data from both resistive bolometers and AXUV diodes. IRVB results are clearly within a factor of two, but additional effort is needed for it to be used to fully support power exhaust research. The IRVB is shown to be immune to electromagnetic interference from ICRF which strongly impacts C-Mod's resistive bolometers. Results of the bench-top calibration are summarized, including a novel temperature calibration method useful for IRVBs.

BACKGROUND: Microsatellite instability (MSI) and allelic imbalance involving chromosome arms 5q, 8p, 17p, and 18q are genetic alterations commonly found in colorectal cancer. We investigated whether the presence or absence of these genetic alterations would allow stratification of patients with Astler-Coller stage B2 or C colorectal cancer into favorable and unfavorable prognostic groups. METHODS: Tumors from 508 patients were evaluated for MSI and allelic imbalance by use of 11 microsatellite markers located on chromosome arms 5q, 8p, 15q, 17p, and 18q. Genetic alterations involving each of these markers were examined for associations with survival and disease recurrence. All P values are two-sided. RESULTS: In univariate analyses, high MSI (MSI-H), i.e., MSI at 30% or more of the loci examined, was associated with improved survival (P =.02) and time to recurrence (P =.01). The group of patients whose tumors exhibited allelic imbalance at chromosome 8p had decreased survival (P =.02) and time to recurrence (P =.004). No statistically significant associations with survival or time to recurrence were observed for markers on chromosome arms 5q, 15q, 17p, or 18q. In multivariate analyses, MSI-H was an independent predictor of improved survival (hazard ratio [HR] = 0.51; 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.31-0.82; P =.006) and time to recurrence (HR = 0.42; 95% CI = 0.24-0.74; P =.003), and 8p allelic imbalance was an independent predictor of decreased survival (HR = 1.89; 95% CI = 1.25-2.83; P =. 002) and time to recurrence (HR = 2.07; 95% CI = 1.32-3.25; P =.002). CONCLUSIONS: Patients whose tumors exhibited MSI-H had a favorable prognosis, whereas those with 8p allelic imbalance had a poor prognosis; both alterations served as independent prognostic factors. To our knowledge, this is the first report of an association between 8p allelic imbalance and survival in patients with colorectal cancer.

The HPC2/ELAC2 gene on chromosome 17p was recently identified as a candidate gene for hereditary prostate cancer (HPC). To confirm these findings, we screened 300 prostate cancer patients (2 affected members/family) from 150 families with HPC for potential germ-line mutations using conformation-sensitive gel electrophoresis, followed by direct sequence analysis. The minimum criteria for our families with HPC was the presence of 3 affected men with prostate cancer. A total of 23 variants were identified, including 13 intronic and 10 exonic changes. Of the 10 exonic changes, 1 truncating mutation was identified, a Glu216Stop nonsense mutation. This nonsense variant was found in 2 of 3 affected men in a single family. The remaining nine alterations included five missense, three silent, and one variant in the 3' untranslated region. To additionally test for potential associations of polymorphic variants and increased risk for disease, we genotyped two common polymorphisms, Ser217Leu and Ala541Thr, in 446 prostate cancer patients from 164 families with HPC and 502 population-based controls. The frequency of the Leu217 variant was similar for patients (32.3%) and controls (31.8%), as was the frequency of the Thr541 variant (5.4% among patients versus 5.2% among controls). In contrast to previous reports, we found no association of the joint effects of Leu271 and Thr541 (odds ratio, 1.04; 95% confidence interval, 0.57-1.89). Overall, our results did not reveal any association between these two common polymorphisms and the risk for HPC. The finding of a nonsense mutation in the HPC2/ELAC2 gene confirms its potential role in genetic susceptibility to prostate cancer. However, our data also suggest that germ-line mutations of the HPC2/ELAC2 are rare in HPC and that the variants Leu217 and Thr541 do not appear to influence the risk for HPC. Cumulatively, these results suggest that alterations within the HPC2/ELAC2 gene play a limited role in genetic susceptibility to HPC.

RESUMEN

The InfraRed imaging Video Bolometer (IRVB) is a useful diagnostic for the multi-dimensional measurement of plasma radiation profiles. For the application of IRVB measurement to the neutron environment in fusion plasma devices such as the Large Helical Device (LHD), in situ calibration of the thermal characteristics of the foil detector is required. Laser irradiation tests of sample foils show that the reproducibility and uniformity of the carbon coating for the foil were improved using a vacuum evaporation method. Also, the principle of the in situ calibration system was justified.

The InfraRed Video Bolometer (IRVB) is a powerful tool to measure radiated power in magnetically confined plasmas due to its ability to obtain 2D images of plasma emission using a technique that is compatible with the fusion nuclear environment. A prototype IRVB has been developed and installed on NSTX-U to view the lower divertor. The IRVB is a pinhole camera which images radiation from the plasma onto a 2.5 µm thick, 9 × 7 cm2 Pt foil and monitors the resulting spatio-temporal temperature evolution using an IR camera. The power flux incident on the foil is calculated by solving the 2D+time heat diffusion equation, using the foil's calibrated thermal properties. An optimized, high frame rate IRVB, is quantitatively compared to results from a resistive bolometer on the bench using a modulated 405 nm laser beam with variable power density and square wave modulation from 0.2 Hz to 250 Hz. The design of the NSTX-U system and benchtop characterization are presented where signal-to-noise ratios are assessed using three different IR cameras: FLIR A655sc, FLIR A6751sc, and SBF-161. The sensitivity of the IRVB equipped with the SBF-161 camera is found to be high enough to measure radiation features in the NSTX-U lower divertor as estimated using SOLPS modeling. The optimized IRVB has a frame rate up to 50 Hz, high enough to distinguish radiation during edge-localized-modes (ELMs) from that between ELMs.

The infrared imaging video bolometer (IRVB) measures plasma radiated power images using a thin metal foil. Two different designs with a tangential view of NSTX-U are made assuming a 640 × 480 (1280 × 1024) pixel, 30 (105) fps, 50 (20) mK, IR camera imaging the 9 cm × 9 cm × 2 µm Pt foil. The foil is divided into 40 × 40 (64 × 64) IRVB channels. This gives a spatial resolution of 3.4 (2.2) cm on the machine mid-plane. The noise equivalent power density of the IRVB is given as 113 (46) µW/cm2 for a time resolution of 33 (20) ms. Synthetic images derived from Scrape Off Layer Plasma Simulation data using the IRVB geometry show peak signal levels ranging from ∼0.8 to ∼80 (∼0.36 to ∼26) mW/cm2.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate time trends in the incidence of parkinsonism and PD over a 15-year period (1976 to 1990). METHODS: The authors used the medical records-linkage system of the Rochester Epidemiology Project to identify incidence cases of parkinsonism in Olmsted County, MN, over three 5-year periods, 1976 to 1980, 1981 to 1985, and 1986 to 1990. PD and other types of parkinsonism were classified using defined criteria. Population denominators were derived from census data and were corrected by removing prevalent cases of parkinsonism. RESULTS: Over the 15 years of the study, 364 cases of parkinsonism were identified; 154 (42%) of them had PD. The incidence of parkinsonism remained stable over the three 5-year periods for the age classes 0 to 39, 40 to 59, and 60 to 69 years. For the age class 70 to 99 years, there was some increase over time mainly owing to an increased incidence of drug-induced parkinsonism. The incidence of PD remained stable over the three 5-year periods for all age classes. Results were similar when considering men and women separately. No birth-cohort effect was present for parkinsonism. Comparison with three previous studies in the same population did not reveal any major long-term secular trends in the incidence of parkinsonism. CONCLUSIONS: The findings for PD over 15 years and comparison of the findings with historical data for parkinsonism over half a century suggest that no major environmental risk factors for PD (e.g., environmental toxins, drugs, diet constituents, or infectious agents) were introduced or removed from this population during these periods.

OBJECTIVE: To study the association of PD with preceding smoking, alcohol, and coffee consumption using a case-control design. METHODS: The authors used the medical records linkage system of the Rochester Epidemiology Project to identify 196 subjects who developed PD in Olmsted County, MN, during the years 1976 to 1995. Each incident case was matched by age (+/-1 year) and sex to a general population control subject. The authors reviewed the complete medical records of cases and control subjects to abstract exposure information. RESULTS: For coffee consumption, the authors found an OR of 0.35 (95% CI = 0.16 to 0.78, p = 0.01), a dose-effect trend (p = 0.003), and a later age at PD onset in cases who drank coffee compared with those who never did (median 72 versus 64 years; p = 0.0002). The inverse association with coffee remained significant after adjustment for education, smoking, and alcohol drinking and was restricted to PD cases with onset at age <72 years and to men. The OR for cigarette smoking was 0.69 (95% CI = 0.45 to 1.08, p = 0.1). The authors found no association between PD and alcohol consumption. Extreme or unusual behaviors such as tobacco chewing or snuff use and a diagnosis of alcoholism were significantly more common in control subjects than cases. CONCLUSIONS: These findings suggest an inverse association between coffee drinking and PD; however, this association does not imply that coffee has a direct protective effect against PD. Alternative explanations for the association should be considered.

Morbidity and death during liver resection in children are due to hemorrhage and the consequences of massive transfusion. To overcome these problems, a new rapid method of blood transfusion was used in four children (8 to 35 months, 8.6 to 13 kg) undergoing extensive hepatic resection for tumor (tumor weight, 440 to 1625 gm). The rapid infusion device consisted of a roller pump and a bubble oxygenator-warmer circuit primed with washed packed red cells resuspended in fresh-frozen plasma and calcium-free balanced salt solution (Plasmalyte). The infusate was warmed, oxygenated, and buffered before it was administered. An average of 5130 ml per patient of this reconstituted blood was infused at an average rate of 122 +/- 45 ml/min, with peak infusion rates sometimes as great as 1 L/min. Cardiac output, pulmonary artery wedge pressure, body temperature, urine output, blood gases, blood chemistries, and coagulation factors remained unchanged during and after these massive transfusions. Blood transfusion at rapid rates required during pediatric liver resection can be accomplished safely if the storage lesion of the bank blood is previously corrected.

RESUMEN

We use a mechanistically based ecosystem simulation model to describe and analyze the spatial and temporal patterns of terrestrial net primary productivity (NPP) in South America. The Terrestrial Ecosystem Model (TEM) is designed to predict major carbon and nitrogen fluxes and pool sizes in terrestrial ecosystems at continental to global scales. Information from intensively studies field sites is used in combination with continental-scale information on climate, soils, and vegetation to estimate NPP in each of 5888 non-wetland, 0.5° latitude °0.5° longitude grid cells in South America, at monthly time steps. Preliminary analyses are presented for the scenario of natural vegetation throughout the continent, as a prelude to evaluating human impacts on terrestrial NPP. The potential annual NPP of South America is estimated to be 12.5 Pg/yr of carbon (26.3 Pg/yr of organic matter) in a non-wetland area of 17.0 ° 106 km2 . More than 50% of this production occurs in the tropical and subtropical evergreen forest region. Six independent model runs, each based on an independently derived set of model parameters, generated mean annual NPP estimates for the tropical evergreen forest region ranging from 900 to 1510 g°m-2 °yr-1 of carbon, with an overall mean of 1170 g°m-2 °yr-1 . Coefficients of variation in estimated annual NPP averaged 20% for any specific location in the evergreen forests, which is probably within the confidence limits of extant NPP measurements. Predicted rates of mean annual NPP in other types of vegetation ranged from 95 g°m-2 °yr-1 in arid shrublands to 930 g°m@ ?yr-1 in savannas, and were within the ranges measured in empirical studies. The spatial distribution of predicted NPP was directly compared with estimates made using the Miami mode of Lieth (1975). Overall, TEM predictions were °10% lower than those of the Miami model, but the two models agreed closely on the spatial patterns of NPP in south America. Unlike previous models, however, TEM estimates NPP monthly, allowing for the evaluation of seasonal phenomena. This is an important step toward integration of ecosystem models with remotely sensed information, global climate models, and atmospheric transport models, all of which are evaluated at comparable spatial and temporal scales. Seasonal patterns of NPP in South America are correlated with moisture availability in most vegetation types, but are strongly influenced by seasonal differences in cloudiness in the tropical evergreen forests. On an annual basis, moisture availability was the factor that was correlated most strongly with annual NPP in South America, but differences were again observed among vegetation types. These results allow for the investigation and analysis of climatic controls over NPP at continental scales, within and among vegetation types, and within years. Further model validation is needed. Nevertheless, the ability to investigate NPP-environment interactions with a high spatial and temporal resolution at continental scales should prove useful if not essential for rigorous analysis of the potential effects of global climate changes on terrestrial ecosystems.
