RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: (Cardiac) interoception was long considered a key mechanism behind symptom perception in persistent somatic symptoms (PSS). In this study, we aimed to extend earlier findings to clarify this potential interoceptive mechanisms of PSS. METHODS: A cross-sectional sample of 251 participants (23.1% with self-reported functional somatic syndrome) completed a laboratory study with two cardioceptive accuracy tasks (Schandry task and a new cardiac signal detection task) and multiple questionnaires. Somatic symptom distress and associated constructs were assessed with the PHQ-15, as well as with a novel multidimensional questionnaire measure (HiTOP-SF1) derived from the somatoform spectrum of the Hierarchical Taxonomy of Psychopathology (HiTOP). Correlations (frequentist and Bayesian) and structural equation modelling (SEM) helped further investigate the interplay between these variables. RESULTS: There were no significant correlations between measures of interoception and somatic symptom distress. Self-report and behavioral cardioceptive accuracy measures did not correlate significantly. No significant covariances emerged between diagnostic tools and cardioceptive accuracy; Bayesian analyses supported the lack of association between interoception and symptom perception. CONCLUSIONS: Cardiac interoception (specifically cardioceptive accuracy) unlikely represents a key mechanism in PSS etiology. We recommend investigating other factors in PSS.

RESUMEN

The adoption of innovative advanced materials holds vast potential, contingent upon addressing safety and sustainability concerns. The European Commission advocates the integration of Safe and Sustainable by Design (SSbD) principles early in the innovation process to streamline market introduction and mitigate costs. Within this framework, encompassing ecological, social, and economic factors is paramount. The NanoSafety Cluster (NSC) delineates key safety and sustainability areas, pinpointing unresolved issues and research gaps to steer the development of safe(r) materials. Leveraging FAIR data management and integration, alongside the alignment of regulatory aspects, fosters informed decision-making and innovation. Integrating circularity and sustainability mandates clear guidance, ensuring responsible innovation at every stage. Collaboration among stakeholders, anticipation of regulatory demands, and a commitment to sustainability are pivotal for translating SSbD into tangible advancements. Harmonizing standards and test guidelines, along with regulatory preparedness through an exchange platform, is imperative for governance and market readiness. By adhering to these principles, the effective and sustainable deployment of innovative materials can be realized, propelling positive transformation and societal acceptance.

RESUMEN

Bovine anaplasmosis, caused by the tick-borne rickettsiaAnaplasma marginale, is endemic in tropical and subtropical regions of the world and results in economic losses in the cattle industry. Major surface proteins (MSPs) have been used as markers for the genetic characterization of A. marginale strains and demonstrate that many isolates may occur in a given geographic area. However, in Brazil, little is known about the genetic diversity of A. marginale isolates within individual herds. This study was designed to examine the genetic variation among A. marginale infecting calves in a farm in the south of Minas Gerais State, Brazil. Blood samples collected from 100 calves were used to prepare Giemsastained smears that were microscopically examined for the presence of A. marginale. From each blood sample, DNA was extracted and analyzed by a polymerase chain reaction (PCR), followed by sequencing to determine diversity among the isolates. Examination of blood smears showed that 48% of the calves were infected with A. marginale, while the real-time PCR detected 70.2% positivity. Congenital infections were found in four calves. The microsatellite and tandem repeat analyses showed high genetic diversity among the isolates.
