RESUMEN

Cancer is one of the major causes of death worldwide, with more than 10 million deaths annually. Despite tremendous advances in the health sciences, cancer continues to be a substantial global contributor to mortality. The current treatment methods demand a paradigm shift that not only improves therapeutic efficacy but also minimizes the side effects of conventional medications. Recently, an increased interest in the potential of natural bioactive compounds in the treatment of several types of cancer has been observed. Ononin, also referred to as formononetin-7-O-ß-d-glucoside, is a natural isoflavone glycoside, derived from the roots, stems, and rhizomes of various plants. It exhibits a variety of pharmacological effects, including Antiangiogenic, anti-inflammatory, antiproliferative, proapoptotic, and antimetastatic activities. The current review presents a thorough overview of sources, chemistry, pharmacokinetics, and the role of ononin in affecting various mechanisms involved in cancer. The review also discusses potential synergistic interactions with other compounds and therapies. The combined synergistic effect of ononin with other compounds increased the efficacy of treatment methods. Finally, the safety studies, comprising both in vitro and in vivo assessments of ononin's anticancer activities, are described.

RESUMEN

Quantum dots (QDs) are semiconducting nanoparticles having different optical and electrical properties when compared to larger particles. They exhibit photoluminescence when irradiated with ultraviolet light, which is due to the transition of an excited electron from the valence band to the conductance band followed by the return of the exciting electron back into the valence band. The size and material of QDs can affect their optical and other properties too. The QDs possess special attributes like high brightness, protection from photobleaching, photostability, color tunability, low toxicity, low production cost, a multiplexing limit, and a high surface-to-volume proportion, which make them a promising tool for biomedical applications. Here, in this study, we summarize the utilization of QDs in different applications including bioimaging, diagnostics, immunostaining, single-cell analysis, drug delivery, and protein detection. Moreover, we discuss the advantages and challenges of using QDs in biomedical applications when compared with other conventional tools.

BACKGROUND: Decreased diet intake and malnourishment have profound implications on cancer patients' quality of life and survival. Malnutrition increases the risk of postoperative complications, increases hospital length stays, reduces patient's tolerance to radiation and chemotherapy treatment, and results in poor response to treatment. In the present study, we intended to assess the nutritional status of cancer patients and find the correlation of body mass index with anthropometric and blood parameters. MATERIAL & METHODS: The study was prospective and cross-sectional, and 104 patients with newly diagnosed solid tumors were included. Patient demographics, symptoms, and anthropometric and blood parameters were collected. The correlation was estimated with Pearson's correlation coefficient. A p-value of less than 0.05 was considered significant. RESULTS: The association between stages of the disease, dental status, type of diet, and BMI was p=0.701, 0.216, and 0.422, respectively, and was not statistically significant. The anthropometric parameters mid upper arm circumference (MUAC cm), mid arm circumference (MAC cm), and triceps skinfold thickness (TSF mm) correlated with body mass index (BMI kg/m2) and had statistically significant p values of 0.0001, 0.0001, and 0.033, respectively. The correlation was assessed between hemoglobin, red cell distribution width, neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio, and serum albumin levels with BMI, but except for albumin (p=0.05), no other blood parameter correlated. CONCLUSION: Nutritional assessment is vital in recognizing patients at risk of treatment-associated complications and poor responders to treatment. In this study, BMI correlated with anthropometric parameters MUAC, MAMC, and TSF. Baseline dietary assessments of patients will help focus on the nutritional build-up of patients before starting treatment.

In the modern era, nanoparticles are the preferred dosage form, and maximum research is going on in the field of nanoparticle formulations. But as they are so small, nanoparticles are able to slip through the body's defenses and cause damage to the organs and tissues deep inside. In recent years, most researchers have focused solely on the therapeutic value of drugs or, at times, the performance of dosage forms, but few have given toxicity studies equal weight in their research. This review demonstrates that nanoparticle formulations are not suitable from a safety standpoint. So, researchers should be focused on alternative formulations like nanoemulsion, nanogel, and other liquids as well as semisolid formulations.

RESUMEN

Eagle syndrome occurs due to elongation of the styloid process or calcification of the stylohyoid ligament, which then may produce a pain sensation due the pressure exerted on various structures in the head and neck. When suspected, imaging helps in identifying the abnormally elongated styloid process or the calcified ligament. In recent years, three-dimensional CT (3DCT) has proved to be valuable in these cases. We report the case of a 62-year-old man with this syndrome in whom imaging with 3DCT conclusively established the diagnosis.
