RESUMEN

Solid-state lithium metal batteries with garnet-type electrolyte provide several advantages over conventional lithium-ion batteries, especially for safety and energy density. However, a few grand challenges such as the propagation of Li dendrites, poor interfacial contact between the solid electrolyte and the electrodes, and formation of lithium carbonate during ambient exposure over the solid-state electrolyte prevent the viability of such batteries. Herein, an ultrathin sub-nanometer porous carbon nanomembrane (CNM) is employed on the surface of solid-state electrolyte (SSE) that increases the adhesion of SSE with electrodes, prevents lithium carbonate formation over the surface, regulates the flow of Li-ions, and blocks any electronic leakage. The sub-nanometer scale pores in CNM allow rapid permeation of Li-ions across the electrode-electrolyte interface without the presence of any liquid medium. Additionally, CNM suppresses the propagation of Li dendrites by over sevenfold up to a current density of 0.7 mA cm-2 and enables the cycling of all-solid-state batteries at low stack pressure of 2 MPa using LiFePO4 cathode and Li metal anode. The CNM provides chemical stability to the solid electrolyte for over 4 weeks of ambient exposure with less than a 4% increase in surface impurities.

RESUMEN

Resveratrol, a natural polyphenol, exhibits beneficial health properties and has been touted as a potential anti-tumor agent. Here, we demonstrate potent anti-cancer effects of carbon dots (C-dots) synthesized from resveratrol. The mild synthesis conditions retained resveratrol functional moieties upon the carbon dots' (C-dots) surface, an important requisite for achieving specificity toward cancer cells and biological activities. Indeed, the disruptive effects of the resveratrol-C-dot were more pronounced in several cancer cell types compared to normal cells, underscoring targeting capabilities of the C-dots, a pertinent issue for the development of cancer therapeutics. In particular, we observed impairment of mitochondrial functionalities, including intracellular calcium release, inhibition of cytochrome-C oxidase enzyme activity, and mitochondrial membrane perturbation. Furthermore, the resveratrol C-dots were more potent than either resveratrol molecules alone, known anti-cancer polyphenolic agents such as curcumin and triphenylphosphonium, or C-dots prepared from different carbonaceous precursors. This study suggests that resveratrol-synthesized C-dots may have promising therapeutic potential as anti-cancer agents.

RESUMEN

Edentulousness affects the mental health of most patients. Missing teeth in the anterior esthetic zones is a matter of concern, especially for young adults. Various replacement options such as fixed partial dentures, removable partial dentures, and dental implants are available to treat edentulousness. Dental implants have been a booming treatment option in modern-day dentistry as they more closely mimic the natural tooth. The most important criterion for placement of the implant in the esthetic zone is the conservation of alveolar bone, especially in the anterior region which is usually compromised due to tooth extraction or resorption of the ridge. The root membrane concept or the socket shield technique is a recently introduced concept in implant dentistry where a portion of the root acts as a shield to protect against alveolar bone resorption and maintain bone integrity, especially in the esthetic area. This case report describes the clinical management of fractured upper anterior teeth using a dental implant and the root membrane technique. Keywords: Anterior zone, Esthetics, Immediate implants, Implant, Missing teeth, Root membrane technique, Socket shield.

RESUMEN

AIM: This study aimed to estimate and correlate the serum and gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) levels of caspase-3 and milk fat globule-epidermal growth factor 8 (MFG-E8) in healthy, gingivitis and generalised chronic periodontitis subjects. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 24 subjects were selected and divided into three groups. After recording the periodontal parameters (plaque index (PI), modified gingival index (MGI), probing depth (PD) and clinical attachment level (CAL)), the serum and GCF samples were collected and the levels of caspase-3 and MFG-E8 were estimated using enzyme-linked immunoassay (ELISA). RESULTS: The mean values of PI, MGI, PD and CALs were significantly higher in group III when compared to group II and group I. The mean value of serum and GCF caspase-3 increased with increasing disease severity, whereas the mean serum and GCF values of MFG-E8 decreased with increasing severity of disease. Spearman's correlation showed a strong positive correlation between the serum and GCF levels of caspase-3 and periodontal parameters, whereas serum and GCF levels of MFG-E8 showed a strong negative correlation with the periodontal parameters. CONCLUSION: The findings of this study are suggestive that the serum and GCF levels of caspase-3 and MFG-E8 could serve as a potential biomarker for the role of apoptosis in periodontal disease. However, further studies are required to explore the mechanism and understand the relationship between these apoptotic markers and periodontitis.

RESUMEN

Purpose: The aim of the study was to estimate and compare the Saliva and GCF levels of NT-proBNP in systemically healthy subjects with severe chronic periodontitis before and after periodontal flap surgery. Materials and Methods: Twenty subjects were selected and divided into two groups based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. Healthy Controls: 10 periodontally and systemically healthy subjects. Presurgery Group: 10 systemically healthy subjects with severe chronic generalized periodontitis. Postsurgery Group included Presurgery Group subjects who will undergo periodontal flap surgery. After the periodontal parameters were measured, GCF and saliva samples were collected. Postsurgery Group subjects underwent periodontal flap surgery and both periodontal parameters and GCF and saliva levels were reassessed after 6 months. Results: Presurgery Group showed a higher mean value of plaque index, modified gingival index, probing pocket depth and clinical attachment level when compared to Healthy Controls and it was found to decrease after periodontal flap surgery (Postsurgery Group). Intergroup comparison (Presurgery Group vs Postsurgery Group) of the mean difference of salivary NT-proBNP was found to be statistically significant. GCF levels of NT-proBNP also decreased after periodontal flap surgery but the difference was not statistically significant. Conclusion: NT pro-BNP levels were found to be higher in periodontitis group as compared to the controls. The levels decreased following surgical periodontal therapy, elucidating the role of periodontal treatment on the expression of NT-proBNP as a salivary and GCF marker. NT-proBNP could serve as a potential biomarker for periodontitis in saliva and GCF in future.

RESUMEN

Exposure to constituent hazardous chemicals in medical products has become a threat to environmental health across the globe. Excessive medication and the mishandling of pharmaceutical drugs can lead to the increased presence of chemicals in the aquatic environment, causing water pollution. Only a few nanomaterials exist for the detection of these chemicals and they are limited in use due to their adverse toxicity, instability, cost, and low aqueous solubility. In contrast, carbon dots (C-dots), a member of the family of carbon-based nanomaterials, have various beneficial properties including excellent biocompatibility, strong photoluminescence, low photobleaching, tunable fluorescence, and easy surface modification. Herein, we summarize recent advancements in various synthetic strategies for high-quality tunable fluorescent C-dots. The root of fluorescence has been briefly explained via the quantum confinement effect, surface defects, and molecular fluorescence. The surface functional moieties of C-dots have been investigated in depth to recognize the various types of pharmaceutical drugs that are used for the treatment of patients. The modulation of C-dot fluorescence in the course of their interactions with these drugs has been carefully explained. Different types of interaction mechanisms behind the C-dot fluorescence alteration have been discussed. Finally, the challenges and future perspectives of C-dots have been proposed for the vibrant field development of C-dot-based drug sensors.

RESUMEN

Solid oxide electrolysis cells (SOECs) are devices that enable economically viable production of clean fuel such as hydrogen gas, which can be used in many industrial applications and serving as an energy carrier for renewable energy sources. Operation of SOEC at intermediate temperature (IT) range (400 to 600 °C) is highly attractive because many unexploited heat sources from industries can be utilized. Proton conducting SOECs based on barium-zirconium-cerate electrolytes show great potential for operating at this temperature range due to their high proton conductivity at reduced temperatures. In this study, a new tridoped BaCe0.5Zr0.2Y0.1Yb0.1Gd0.1O3-δ (BCZYYbGd) electrolyte with very high chemical stability and proton conductivity is coupled with a PrNi0.5Co0.5O3-δ steam electrode and a Ni-BCYYbGd hydrogen electrode for IT-SOEC operation. The dopants of the electrolyte were carefully designed to obtain the optimum stability and conductivity for IT-SOEC. The BCYYbGd electrolyte was stable over 200 h at 50 vol % steam in argon and at 600 °C, and a very high electrolysis current density of 2.405 A cm-2 was obtained at 600 °C and 1.6 V at 20 vol % of steam in argon. This system was also found to be highly reversible, exhibiting very high performance in SOFC mode and suggesting a potential candidate for next generation proton conducting electrolyte.
