RESUMEN

Resistance training is a commonly used strategy for improving both athletic performance and general health. While the contribution of resistance training intensity and volume to muscle strength and hypertrophy have been extensively investigated, training frequency only recently received sufficient attention, especially in older adults. A meta-regression was conducted to compare muscle strength and hypertrophic adaptations to resistance training programmes performed with different training frequencies in adults over 60 years of age. The systematic literature search identified 14 articles for meta-regression. For each outcome, an effect size (ES) was calculated as the pre-test-post-test change, divided by the pooled pre-test standard deviation (SD). Random-effects meta-regressions for multilevel data structures, using study as the clustering variable, were performed using package metafor in R. Maximal strength shows a significant effect of frequency (p = 0.001), with an increase in effect size of 0.14 for every day increase in frequency (CI: 0.08, 0.21). For muscle hypertrophy, no significant effect of frequency was found (p = 0.67). Considering that muscle hypertrophy was not affected, while maximum strength was only slightly improved with additional training days, it seems unlikely that more than two weekly resistance training sessions would provide any further benefits for older adults.

The dorsal muscles of the lower torso and extremities have often been denoted the "posterior chain." These muscles are used to support the thoracic and lumbar spine and peripheral joints, including the hip, knee, and ankle on the dorsal aspect of the body. This study investigated the relative muscle activity of the hamstring group and selected surrounding musculature during the leg curl, good morning, glute-ham raise, and Romanian deadlift (RDL). Twelve healthy, weight-trained men performed duplicate trials of single repetitions at 85% 1-repetition maximum for each lift in random order, during which surface electromyography and joint angle data were obtained. Repeated measures analysis of variance across the 4 exercises was performed to compare the activity from the erector spinae (ES), gluteus medius (GMed), semitendinosus (ST), biceps femoris (BF), and medial gastrocnemius (MGas). Significant differences (p ≤ 0.05) were noted in eccentric muscle activity between exercise for the MGas (p < 0.027), ST (p < 0.001), BF (p < 0.001), and ES (p = 0.032), and in concentric muscle activity, for the ES (p < 0.001), BF (p = 0.010), ST (p = 0.009), MGas (p < 0.001), and the GMed (p = 0.018). Bonferroni post hoc analysis revealed significant pairwise differences during eccentric actions for the BF, ST, and MGas. Post hoc analysis also revealed significant pairwise differences during concentric actions for the ES, BF, ST, MGas, and GMed. Each of these showed effect sizes that are large or greater. The main findings of this investigation are that the ST is substantially more active than the BF among all exercises, and hamstring activity was maximized in the RDL and glute-ham raise. Therefore, athletes and coaches who seek to maximize the involvement of the hamstring musculature should consider focusing on the glute-ham raise and RDL.

Metabolic and neurological responses to 4 bouts of lower-body or upper-body resistance exercise preceded by cycle ergometry or rest were assessed. Nine resistance-trained men (26.7 ± 6.6 years) underwent bouts of (a) cycle ergometry then bench press, (b) bench press only, (c) cycle ergometry then back squat, and (d) back squat only. Cycle ergometry was performed at 75% maximum heart rate for 45 minutes. Bench press and back squat protocols required 6 sets to volitional fatigue at 80% 1RM with 2 minutes rest between sets. Significantly more repetitions were performed during set 1 for back squat without preceding aerobic exercise (12.6 ± 4.5 vs. 10.0 ± 3.5, p = 0.000) and cumulatively at set 3 (27.1 ± 10.6 vs. 23.1 ± 9.2, p = 0.014), and no differences were noted for bench press repetitions. Inclusion of cycle ergometry results in impaired back squat, but not bench press, performance likely because of a combination of local metabolic stress and various neuromuscular effects.

Calf-fed Holstein steers (n = 115; 449 ± 20 kg) were utilized in a serial harvest experiment. A baseline group of five steers was harvested after 226 d on feed (DOF), which was designated day 0. The remaining cattle were assigned randomly to 11 harvest groups, with slaughter every 28 d. Cattle were either not (CON) or were fed zilpaterol hydrochloride for 20 d followed by a 3 d withdrawal (ZH). There were five steers per treatment in each slaughter group ranging from days 28 to 308. Whole carcasses were divided into lean, bone, internal cavity, hide, and fat trim components. Apparent mineral retention (Ca, P, Mg, K, and S) within the body was calculated as the difference between mineral concentration at slaughter and day 0. Mineral concentration at day 0 was determined from body composition of steers harvested at day 0 multiplied by individual live body weight (BW) at day 0. All data were analyzed as a 2 × 11 factorial arrangement with individual animal as the experimental unit. Orthogonal contrasts were used to analyze linear and quadratic contrasts over time (11 slaughter dates). There were no differences in concentration of Ca, P, and Mg in bone tissue as feeding duration increased (P ≥ 0.89); concentration of K, Mg, and S in lean tissue did fluctuate across DOF (P < 0.01). Averaged across treatment and DOF, 99% of Ca, 92% of P, 78% of Mg, and 23% of S present in the body were in bone tissue; 67% of K and 49% of S were in lean tissue. Expressed as gram per day, apparent retention of all minerals decreased linearly across DOF (P < 0.01). Expressed relative to empty body weight (EBW) gain, apparent Ca, P, and K retention decreased linearly as BW increased (P < 0.01) whereas Mg and S increased linearly (P < 0.01). Apparent retention of Ca was greater for CON cattle (greater bone fraction) and apparent retention of K was greater for ZH cattle (greater muscle fraction) when expressed relative to EBW gain (P ≤ 0.02), demonstrating the increase in lean gain by ZH cattle. There were no differences in apparent retention of Ca, P, Mg, K, or S due to treatment (P ≥ 0.14) or time (P ≥ 0.11) when expressed relative to protein gain. Apparent retention averaged 14.4 g Ca, 7.5 g P, 0.45 g Mg, 1.3 g K, and 1.0 g S/100 g protein gain. Expressing apparent mineral retention on a protein gain basis minimized effects of rate and type of gain, allowing for better comparison across treatments and time. Feeding zilpaterol hydrochloride did not affect apparent mineral retention when expressed relative to protein gain.


Mineral requirements for feedlot cattle are largely based on measured mineral concentration in the body at harvest. Fairly extensive research has been done quantifying Ca and P in the body of cattle, but data on Mg, K, and S are sparse. Serial harvest experiments are expensive and labor intensive and therefore not conducted frequently. A group of 115 Holstein steers was fed a finishing diet with serial harvest every 28 d. Two treatments were evaluated, control and cattle fed zilpaterol hydrochloride to increase lean tissue growth. Every 28 d, five steers from each treatment group were harvested with the whole carcass divided into lean, bone, internal cavity, hide, and fat trim components. Apparent mineral retention was calculated as the difference between mineral composition at day 0 (baseline harvest group) and each 28 d harvest group. Averaged across treatment and days on feed, 99% of Ca, 92% of P, 78% of Mg, and 23% of S present in the body were measured in bone tissue; 67% of K and 49% of S were in lean tissue. Apparent retention averaged 14.4 g Ca, 7.5 g P, 0.45 g Mg, 1.3 g K, and 1.0 g S/100 g protein gain.

Purpose: The pro-agility test is a common test in multiple sports. A common way to start is the crossover step (CS) where athletes start the drill by crossing one leg over the other. However, the rhythm step (RS), initiated by moving one foot medially before crossing the opposite foot over the first, may result in faster time. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to compare the RS to the CS in the pro-agility test. Methods: Thirteen division I college football players (age 21 ± 1.5 years, mass 103.5 ± 18 kg, and stature 1.87 ± .078 m) were recruited to perform both step techniques. Video was analyzed to determine times during the first five yards (t1), the second ten yards (t2), the last five yards (t3), and the total time (ttotal). Additionally, maximum acceleration (amax), time to maximum acceleration (tamax), maximum body lean angle (θlean), and time to reach θlean (tθlean) were measured. Results: Descriptive statistics (mean ± SD) were calculated for all variables. A significant difference between the two techniques was observed at t1 (RS mean 1.56 ± 0.09 s, CS mean 1.62 ± 0.11 s), ttotal (RS mean 4.99 ± 0.35 s, CS mean 5.09 ± 0.35 s), and tamax (RS mean 0.38 ± 0.67, CS mean 0.46 ± 0.61). Conclusion: Overall, the RS appeared to be superior to the CS for reaching peak acceleration faster during the initial phase of the pro-agility drill as well as short distance sprints that are initiated from a standing position.

Athletes who merit the title 'elite' are rare and differ both quantitatively and qualitatively from athletes of lower qualifications. Serving and studying elite athletes may demand non-traditional approaches. Research involving elite athletes suffers because of the typical nomothetic requirements for large sample sizes and other statistical assumptions that do not apply to this population. Ideographic research uses single-athlete study designs, trend analyses, and statistical process control. Single-athlete designs seek to measure differences in repeated measurements under prescribed conditions, and trend analyses may permit systematic monitoring and prediction of future outcomes. Statistical process control uses control charting and other methods from management systems to assess and modify training processes in near real-time. These methods bring assessment and process control into the real world of elite athletics.

A serial harvest was conducted every 28 d from 254 to 534 days on feed (DOF) to quantify changes in growth and composition of calf-fed Holstein steers (n = 110, initial BW = 449.2 ± 19.9 kg). One-half were supplemented the ß-2 adrenergic agonist zilpaterol hydrochloride (ZH; 8.33 mg/kg 100% DM basis), and the remainder fed a control (CON) ration during the final 20 d followed by a 3 d withdrawal prior to harvest. Cattle were randomly allocated to dietary treatment and harvest endpoint (254, 282, 310, 338, 366, 394, 422, 450, 478, 506, and 534 DOF) using a 2 × 11 factorial treatment structure and a completely randomized experimental design structure. The objective of this ad-hoc investigation was to quantify changes in value across multiple harvest endpoints and marketing strategies for cattle supplemented with ZH. Cattle-fed ZH had increased (P < 0.01) value when sold on a dressed basis (+$82.64) or on a value-based formula (+$75.59) compared with CON cattle. No differences (P ≥ 0.14) were detected between ZH and CON carcasses for premiums and discounts related to HCW, yield grade, or quality grade. Moreover, no differences (P = 0.98) were detected for overall adjusted carcass value between ZH and CON carcasses. Fabrication values revealed that ZH carcasses had greater (P < 0.01) revenue than CON carcasses for primal round (+$36.23), loin (+$38.16), flank (+$8.95), rib (+$16.33), and chuck (+$27.49) regardless of DOF. Increased primal values ultimately led to greater (P < 0.01) processor revenue (+$138.94) and carcass value per 45.4 kg (+$6.45) for cattle-fed ZH compared with CON cattle. Overall, increased carcass weight and improved fabrication yield led to greater revenue at all harvest endpoints for cattle-fed ZH. Linear increases in live and dressed values indicated the daily change in live value was $3.48, which is less than an increase of $3.77 daily for dressed carcass value. Greater beef processor margin and profitability are expected when this growth technology is used.

RESUMEN

Due to the broad spectrum of physical characteristics necessary for success in field sports, numerous training modalities have been used develop physical preparedness. Sports like rugby, basketball, lacrosse, and others require athletes to be not only strong and powerful but also aerobically fit and able to recover from high-intensity intermittent exercise. This provides coaches and sport scientists with a complex range of variables to consider when developing training programs. This can often lead to confusion and the misuse of training modalities, particularly in the development of aerobic and anaerobic conditioning. This review outlines the benefits and general adaptations to 3 commonly used and effective conditioning methods: high-intensity interval training, repeated-sprint training, and small-sided games. The goals and outcomes of these training methods are discussed, and practical implementations strategies for coaches and sport scientists are provided.

BACKGROUND: We have recently noted an acute increase in circulating free fatty acids and glycerol, as well as resting metabolic rate, when men and women ingested the dietary supplement OxyELITE Pro™ in a single dose. We have also noted a reduction in appetite when subjects were treated with this supplement for 14 consecutive days. It is possible that such findings may favor body weight and fat loss over time. Therefore, the purpose of the present study was to determine the effects of this dietary supplement on weight loss and associated markers using an eight week intervention. METHODS: Exercise-trained subjects were randomly assigned in double blind manner to ingest either the dietary supplement (n = 16; aged 22.8 ± 0.7) or a placebo (n = 16; 22.5 ± 0.5) every day for eight weeks. Body weight, body composition, skinfold thickness, serum lipids, and appetite were measured as the primary outcome variables. As measures of supplement safety, a complete blood count and comprehensive metabolic panel were performed, and resting heart rate and blood pressure were measured (pre and post intervention). RESULTS: No interactions or main effects were noted for our primary outcome measures (P > 0.05). However, when comparing pre and post intervention values for the supplement, significant decreases were noted in appetite, body weight, body fat percentage, and skinfold thickness (P < 0.05), while increases were noted for total and HDL-C, as well as for resting heart rate (P < 0.05). No changes were noted for placebo from pre to post intervention (P > 0.05), with the exception of an increase in HDL-C (P < 0.05). Blood pressure and bloodborne safety variables were not differently impacted by supplement or placebo (P > 0.05), with the exception of monocytes, for which an interaction effect was noted (P = 0.04). CONCLUSION: These data indicate that the dietary supplement OxyELITE Pro™ may assist in weight and body fat loss in a sample of exercise-trained men and women. The supplement does not result in any adverse effects pertaining to resting blood pressure or bloodborne markers of safety; however a small increase in resting heart rate is observed.
