RESUMEN

This paper discusses the development of the Mississippi School of Occupational Therapy, the first occupational therapy education program supported by a state government, and the first to start in the deep south. This article explores what is known about the school and the department to which the school was to supply therapists. The school existed from 1921-1926 under Eleanor Goodwin Morse a student of Eleanor Clarke Slagle, and followed the curriculum design of the Henry B. Favill School of Occupation and continued under Louise Howorth until 1929. The forty-three graduates whose names can be identified, staffed the Department of Occupational Therapy at the Mississippi State Insane Asylum and occupational therapy departments in eleven other states thus spreading the knowledge and skills of occupational therapy throughout the south and east coast.

RESUMEN

Many zoos in North America feature walk-through exhibits that allow members of the public to interact with psittacine species, as these exhibits are popular with guests and can generate additional revenue. There is limited research available on the life expectancy and common causes of mortality of psittacines when group-housed in aviaries. This study compiled data on 496 budgerigar (Melopsittacus undulatus) mortalities at a walk-through aviary at a North American zoo from March 2009 to March 2019, including histopathology on 62 tissue sets collected post mortem, and gross necropsy data for 163 birds deceased from March 2015 to March 2019. The mean age at death or euthanasia of all fledged birds from 2015 to 2019 was 3.57 ± 1.58 yr. The most common causes of death or euthanasia found on gross necropsy were granulomatous disease (39.2%), trauma (16.0%), and Macrorhabdus ornithogaster (13.5%). The most common histologic finding was M. ornithogaster, described as the primary pathologic finding in 31.7% of submitted tissue sets, and recorded as a secondary pathologic finding in 53.2% of submitted tissue sets. Mycobacterial disease was the primary pathologic finding in 25.3% of submitted tissue sets, and was recorded as an additional pathologic finding in 35.4% of submitted tissue sets.

RESUMEN

A 7-month-old, male Magellanic penguin (Spheniscus magellanicus), housed in an outdoor exhibit, developed acute neurologic signs that progressed to death over 2 days. On gross examination, the bird had congested, edematous lungs, and cerebellar hemorrhage. Histologic examination identified granulomatous pneumonia and encephalitis, with thrombosis and eosinophilic, branching fungal hyphae that had invaded the meningeal vessel walls. Polymerase chain reaction identified the fungus in the brain as Rhizomucor pusillus, an uncommon cause of mucormycosis. This organism has previously been reported in respiratory, skeletal, and sino-orbital lesions of avian species. This clinical report describes meningoencephalitis associated with Rhizomucor pusillus in a penguin.

RESUMEN

Fifty-eight frozen postmortem lung and air sac samples were collected from penguins housed at 21 zoological collections throughout the United Kingdom, from 2007 to 2018. Aspergillus fumigatus, a significant respiratory pathogen of penguins in captivity, was isolated from 15 of the 22 penguins with gross lesions. Of the penguins with gross lesions of aspergillosis at postmortem examination, the pathogen was cultured from 63.6% (15 of 22) of frozen samples. Aspergillus fumigatus was cultured from 2.7% (1 of 36) of tissues collected from penguins without gross lesions at postmortem. Additionally, of 18 fresh samples that cultured A. fumigatus at the time of postmortem, 15 samples (83%) yielded isolates that were successfully cultured from frozen tissue. Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) data demonstrated that all isolates were susceptible to terbinafine and voriconazole, and all were resistant to itraconazole, using published MIC cutoff values. Comparison isolates from fresh tissues had identical antimicrobial susceptibility to isolates from the same tissues after being frozen. This study demonstrates that A. fumigatus can be isolated from frozen respiratory tissues of penguins, even after freezing for more than 10 yr.

RESUMEN

The Henry B. Favill School of Occupations, a pioneer program in the history of occupational therapy, was named for the visionary physician Henry Baird Favill, M.D. who practiced in Chicago, Illinois. The School had two types of classes or programs. One was a curative workshop for disabled clients in need of occupational training and the other was a teaching program designed to train people to work with clients. The curative workshop, called the Occupational Center, began in 1915 at the Illinois Society for Mental Hygiene under the guidance of Dr. Favill and the direction of Eleanor Clarke Slagle, a founder and leader in the profession of occupational therapy. The teaching program began in 1917 initially in cooperation with the American Red Cross, Chicago Chapter, and later with the Chicago School of Civics and Philanthropy and the Illinois Department of Public Welfare. This article traces the development and history of the workshop to treat clients and the training programs to educate teachers of occupation who would become known as occupational therapists.

RESUMEN

This article identifies and discusses five philosophical beliefs expressed in the writings of Eleanor Clarke Slagle, a pioneer and founder of the occupational therapy profession. Her beliefs express a positive view of people's ability and capacity to change their habits and routines to better enable them to function and participate in community and social life. Slagle believed that clients should have an evaluation and intervention program based on individual needs and goals whether the program was done individually or in groups. She believed that intervention programs could be organized into levels to form a progression from those who had deteriorated in daily habits to those ready for discharge back to the community. She believed that the education of the practitioners should include lectures for knowledge, application, and training in occupations to specific problems seen by practitioners, and practice training in the field under the supervision of trained occupational therapists. Her beliefs continue to underpin the practice of occupational therapy today.

RESUMEN

The Pioneer Schools of Occupation: Can They Teach Us Anything Today? This study reviews the development of the pioneer schools of occupation and their curriculum or program design between 1906 and 1923. The purposes are to document the existence of the schools, to explore the issues in establishing the schools, and to compare and contrast concepts stated in early curriculum models with those in current models of practice. The dates were selected to examine ideas before the passage of the Minimum Standards for Courses of Training in Occupational Therapy by the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) outlining a consensus course of study.

RESUMEN

The creation of a new profession in the early 20th century, such as occupational therapy, required a commitment to certain ideas and a willingness to accept certain challenges. This study examines the commitment to the idea of therapeutic and health supporting occupation by the early leaders and proponents of the profession and the challenges they faced in gaining acceptance of occupational therapy as a profession capable of delivering a valued health care service to society. Six challenges are reviewed as they occurred in the history of the profession and as they continue to challenge the profession into the present era.

RESUMEN

Although the name, Eleanor Clarke Slagle, is well known to occupational therapy practitioners, her personal history is less known and published accounts vary in the degree of accuracy. This article is based on a historical research technique known as source criticism that focuses on using accounts published during the individual's lifetime that can be verified, when possible, through more than one source. The purpose is to present an accurate history of Mrs. Slagle as a person who influenced the history and development of occupational therapy practice in the United States.

RESUMEN

ABSTRACT The purpose of this study was to explore the assessments used in occupational therapy practice through identifying most commonly used assessments and the rationale for their use in different occupational therapy practice areas. The study utilized a nonprobability convenience sample of 260 occupational therapy practitioners attending the American Occupational Therapy Association's annual conference. A descriptive survey research design was used for conducting this study. The survey instrument addressed three major questions related to (a) the area of practice, (b) the specific assessments used, and (c) reasons for using the specific assessments. Descriptive statistics were utilized to analyze the results. Results indicated most of the assessments used in occupational therapy clinics target body structure and function. Assessments were used due to their convenient availability in clinics, clinical utility and standardization, client-centeredness, development by occupational therapists, being taught in school/fieldwork, and being satisfying to insurance companies. Implications for occupational therapy education, practice, and research are presented.

RESUMEN

Herbert James Hall, MD (1870-1923), was a pioneer in the systematic and organized study of occupation as therapy for persons with nervous and mental disorders that he called the "work cure." He began his work in 1904 during the early years of the Arts and Crafts Movement in the United States. His primary interest was the disorder neurasthenia, a condition with many symptoms including chronic fatigue, stress, and inability to work or perform everyday tasks. The prevailing treatment of the day was absolute bed rest known as the "rest cure." Hall believed that neurasthenia was not caused by overwork but by faulty living habits that could be corrected through an ordered life schedule and selected occupations. He identified several principles of therapy that are still used today including graded activity and energy conservation. Dr. Adolph Meyer credits Hall for organizing the ideas on the therapeutic use of occupation (Meyer, 1922). Hall also provided the name American Occupational Therapy Association for the professional organization and served as the fourth president. For his many contributions to the profession Hall deserves to be recognized as a major contributor to the development and organization of occupational therapy.
