RESUMEN

A recent study based on gonad histology revealed that the existence of the spawning grounds for Gray's grenadier anchovy (Coilia grayii) and Osbeck's grenadier anchovy (C. mystus) in the Min River Estuary, the largest in Fujian Province, southern China. Further confirming their natal sources and migratory patterns is essential to understand their life histories. We used otolith microchemistry to assess the origins and habitat uses of 23 C. grayii and 22 C. mystus, collected the Min River Estuary and the adjacent waters. The results showed that C. grayii spawned in both freshwater (n| = 14) and brackish water (n = 9), and C. mystus spawned mainly in brackish water (n| = 20) with minor in freshwater (n| = 1) and marine water (n| = 1). The migratory patterns of C. grayii (four types) and C. mystus (five types) were diverse, mainly exhibiting anadromous and semi-anadromous behaviors. The first migratory behavior of C. grayii and C. mystus occurred within the age of the first year. The findings have significant implications for fishery stock management of the Min River Estuary and its adjacent waters.

Yangtze River Estuary plays a key role in linking the river and ocean ecosystems. Our understanding on its biodiversity and associated ecological processes remains poor, which is especially true for the invertebrate assemblage. Here, we investigated invertebrate assemblage pattern and associated environmental drivers based on four different seasonal comprehensive investigations across this region in 2014. A total of 35 species, belonging to 20 families, 10 orders and three phylums were identified. Crustaceans (19 species) and mollusks (13 species) were the taxa with higher richness. Dominant invertebrate included Palaemon gravieri, Crangon affinis, Ovalipes punctatus, Acetes chinensis, Portunus trituberculatus and Charybdis bimaculata. Total density and biomass was 4518.96 kN·km-2 and 173.09 kg·km-2 respectively, with the highest value in spring and the lowest in autumn. Biodiversity indices peaked in winter and spring and reached the lowest in summer. Invertebrate assemblage structure showed significant seasonal variation, appearing in a significant difference between the near-shore and the off-shore in spring, and between the northern-waters and southern-waters in other seasons. Results from ordination analysis showed that the spatial variation of invertebrate was mainly regulated by temperature and dissolved oxygen, whereas Chla and nutrient factors played key roles in driving the temporal community assemblage in this region.

By means of first principles calculation and experiments, a detailed mechanism is proposed to include the stages of slip, adjustment, and expansion for the HCP → FCC phase transformation with the prismatic relation of [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] in titanium. It is revealed that the formation of four FCC layers is preferable after the slip of Shockley partial dislocations of 1/6 [Formula: see text] on [Formula: see text] planes, and that the adjustment of interplanar spacing and the volume expansion are energetically favorable and could happen spontaneously without any energy barrier. It is also found that the transformed FCC lattice first follows the c/a ratio (1.583) of HCP and then becomes an ideal FCC structure (c/a = √2). The proposed mechanism could not only provide a deep understanding to the process of HCP → FCC prismatic transformation in titanium, but also clarify the controversy regarding volume expansion of HCP-FCC phase transition of titanium in the literature.
