RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: A characteristic task in aging is the process of reevaluating and reflecting on one's life in order to give it meaning. The successful resolution of this task is defined as ego-integrity, and it is related to various psychological phenomena that foster the person's adaptation to change. The objective was to adapt an ego-integrity scale in a sample of older adults and study the relationships between emotional intelligence, coping strategies, and mood to find out whether they are predictors of ego-integrity. METHODS: The sample included 401 healthy older adults (241 women; ages 65-95, M = 73.69, SD = 6.83). Statistical analyses included structural equation models. Northwestern Ego-integrity Scale 9-item was tested showing that a structure with two unrelated factors fitted the data well. The internal consistency was satisfactory (.82 integrity and .72 despair). RESULTS: Emotional intelligence positively predicted problem-focused adaptive coping strategies (problem solving and positive reassessment) and negatively predicted state of mind (depression and hopelessness), whereas adaptive coping positively predicted integrity, and mood predicted it negatively. CONCLUSION: Emotional intelligence skills, adaptive coping strategies, and mood largely determine the successful resolution of the ego integrity conflict and are relevant resources in successful aging.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Epidermoid cysts are rare benign lesions that originate from remnants of ectodermal epithelial tissue, particularly infrequent in the pediatric population. They exhibit characteristic imaging features, with occasional variations leading to the development of a "white" epidermoid cyst. This transformation results from the presence of protein and lipid material within the cyst, causing intrinsic hyperintensity in T1-weighted images, signal hypointensity in T2-weighted images, and a bright signal in diffusion-weighted imaging. CASE PRESENTATION: We describe the case of a 5-year-old Latina pediatric patient initially diagnosed with a typical epidermoid cyst. After 13 years of follow-up, this typical epidermoid cyst underwent a transformation, becoming a "white" epidermoid cyst. CONCLUSIONS: Epidermoid cysts are rare intracranial lesions. The term "white epidermoid cyst" does not denote a variant; it represents a distinct transformation within an epidermoid cyst due to liquid and protein accumulation. This transformation should be considered in cases with specific imaging characteristics.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Effective coping strategies facilitate older adults' optimal adaptation and contribute to their well-being. Problem-focused strategies are associated with active styles and enhance well-being. This study analyzes the role of coping strategies in Colombian older adults' subjective well-being (SWB) using structural equation modelling. Additionally, Confirmatory Factor Analyses of the Life Satisfaction Scale and Coping Strategies Questionnaires are performed. METHOD: A cross-sectional study is conducted with 455 Colombian older adults, ranging from 65 to 92 years old. RESULTS: The results show that problem-focused coping has a positive effect on SWB, whereas emotion-focused coping has a negative effect on SWB. CONCLUSIONS: This article highlights the relationship between effective coping and life satisfaction by showing that problem-focused coping strategies are adaptative and enhance well-being during aging.

RESUMEN

Well-being is a complex construct related to sociodemographic and cultural aspects that vary across cultures. Latin America is a region with high social inequalities among population groups, although this varies significantly depending on the country. This article proposes a model that seeks to establish the relationship between psychosocial variables, psychological well-being, and life satisfaction in a sample of Colombian older adults. The model explores associations between resilience, socioeconomic status, life satisfaction, and psychological well-being. A study with a sample of 617 Colombian older adults was conducted. A structural equation modeling technique was performed. The results showed a model in which life satisfaction is positively explained by psychological well-being and resilience, whereas psychological well-being is explained by a higher socio-economic status. The results contribute to the evidence about how well-being is determined by psychosocial and cultural factors. The evidence found represents novel information about older adults in Colombia.

RESUMEN

The goal of the current study was to investigate the relationships between the Five Factor Model of personality and the dimensions of subjective well-being (positive affect, negative affect, and life satisfaction), and psychological well-being (self-acceptance, personal growth, environmental mastery, autonomy, positive relations with others, and purpose in life). Participants included 618 Colombian adults aged 60-92 years. Multiple linear regression analyses were conducted. Regarding the subjective well-being, neuroticism was associated with lower scores on life satisfaction, and positively associated with negative affect, whereas extroversion and conscientiousness were associated with higher scores on life satisfaction and positive affect. For psychological well-being, neuroticism showed a negative and significant association with all of the psychological well-being dimensions, except purpose in life, whereas extroversion and conscientiousness showed a significant and positive relationship with the six dimensions. Neuroticism, extraversion, and conscientiousness represent personality predispositions for general well-being. Extraversion and conscientiousness are predictors of optimal aging. Neuroticism was the only significant predictor of negative affect.
