RESUMEN

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: The rates of healthcare-associated infections are high around the world. Hand hygiene is considered the most effective measure to reduce the transmission of pathogens in the hospital environment. Our objective was to evaluate adherence to hand hygiene in critical units of a tertiary-level hospital in Central-West Brazil. DESIGN: Observational study employing cross-sectional data. Reporting rigour was demonstrated using the STROBE checklist. METHODS: Observation of hand hygiene practices of 129 professionals from the health team, including nursing staff, physicians and physical therapists. Data collection was carried out using the World Health Organization form. RESULTS: A total of 3,025 hand hygiene opportunities were observed, and the overall rate of adherence was only 46.25%. There was a greater frequency of hand hygiene after risk of exposure to bodily fluids and after contact with patients, 60.80% and 53.45%, respectively. Nurses obtained a higher rate of adherence to hand hygiene (59.80%). The neonatal ICU had a higher rate of adherence to hand hygiene when compared to other sectors. CONCLUSIONS: The physical structure for hand hygiene in the institution was poor, and no professionals reached the minimum time required for execution of hand hygiene techniques. There were low rates of adherence to hand hygiene by professionals at all five times and in all categories and sectors observed, which may have been influenced by poor infrastructure present in the institution. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE: This study is of great relevance to patient safety, given the rates of healthcare-associated infections worldwide, with emphasis on underdeveloped countries. It is hoped that the results of this research can guide organisations to validly and systematically evaluate adherence to hand hygiene and achieve higher rates of adherence to hand hygiene and consequently reduce the number of infections in health environments.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the occupational stress among health workers in a university hospital. METHODS: Cross-sectional study conducted with health workers in the areas of nursing and medicine at a university hospital in southern Brazil. The data were collected between August of 2011 and August of 2012 by a questionnaire of characterization and Job Stress Scale. A descriptive and univariate analysis was performed (Kruskal-Wallis). RESULTS: The participants presented high demand and high control of the work and low social support, indicating an active work. Nurses had less control over work (p<0.001) and physicians received more social support (p=0.006). Reduced social support was related to greater exposure to stress among nursing assistants and technicians (p=0.012). CONCLUSION: Workers who felt the low social support had higher exposure to stress. It is necessary to implement stress prevention strategies among health workers, such as the strengthening of social support at work.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: to identify the scientific evidence on the development of cardiovascular and respiratory diseases due to workplace contamination by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. METHODS: integrative literature review. The search for primary articles was held in October 2017 in the Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online (through Pubmed), Web of Science and Latin American and Caribbean Literature in Health Sciences (LILACS). RESULTS: the 16 studies analyzed showed that exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons was associated with cardiovascular diseases, such as increased blood pressure, heart rate variation, and ischemic heart disease; and respiratory disorders, such as decreased lung function, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, asthma, wheeze, coughing, pulmonary wheezing, chest tightness, effort dyspnea, and sore throat. CONCLUSIONS: polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons cause deleterious effects on the cardiovascular and respiratory systems through mutations and cellular inflammation, being a risk to exposed individuals.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: to know nurses' perceptions about their work process in a Mobile Emergency Care Service. METHODS: qualitative study conducted with 12 nurses whose speeches were submitted to Content Analysis. RESULTS: there are weaknesses related to overload of activities, numerous functions, indirect supervision, risk situations, difficulties in relationship with hospitals, lack of vehicles and professionals, inappropriate places to provide care and lack of knowledge of the population about urgent and emergency care. Potentials were associated with effective interpersonal relationships, continuing training, security when arriving at the place of care, care protocol and taste for what you do. FINAL CONSIDERATIONS: the identified weaknesses need to be noted by managers and nurses. Thus, they would seek to establish actions to diminish them and maximize potentials, which could improve patient care as well as reduce occupational risks and, in turn, promote workers' well-being.

RESUMEN

Objective: To analyze the fibers and porosity of Spunbond-Meltblown-Spunbond and Non-Woven Fabric materials used to manufacture sur-gical masks for respiratory protection of healthcare workers exposed to chemical and biological occupational hazards. Method: Descriptive analytical study, using scanning electron microscopy to analyze the materials. Conducted at the Electron Microscopy and Microanalysis Laboratory. Masks made with Spunbond-Meltblown-Spunbond wraps for sterilization and Non-Woven Fabric surgical masks were used in this research. Result: The mask made with Spunbond-Meltblown-Spunbond presents fibers distributed randomly the inner filtering layer has fine fibers ranging from 1 to 5 µm and are well tangled. The Non-Woven Fabric mask has the filtering layer consisting of fine fibers and is less dense. Conclusion: The results of this study indicate vari-ation in pore size and fibers of Spunbond-Meltblown-Spunbond and Non-Woven Fabric, which may result in improper filtering of chemical particles by fabric fibers. Microorganisms can vary from 1 to 5 µm, making these analyzed materials act as a protective barrier against biological risks. (AU)

Introduction: Workers in the agribusiness administrative sector are susceptible to occupational risks in their work process, such as: physical, chemical, accident and ergonomic, biological and psychosocial such as fatigue, tension and pressure at work. These conditions influence the physical and mental health of these workers, interfering with the performance of work activities and quality of life at work. As a result of these factors, it is important to find ways to provide a better quality of life and satisfaction in the occupational environment, as well as promoting mental health among agribusiness workers. Objective: To reflect the organizational strategies of occupational nurses to promote mental health in the work environment of agribusiness workers. Method: Reflective, descriptive study, which reflects the experiences in developing actions of a multidisciplinary team from an agribusiness company located in more than three Brazilian states and has 1200 workers. The idea of caring for the mental health of agribusiness workers arose from the observation of the occupational nurse in the workers' recurring search for the people and management department, with reports of problems experienced inside and outside the company. Faced with this problem, the need arose to provide workers with care focused on mental health, through welcoming and directing them to specialized care within the company itself. In view of this, a pillar called care for emotional health was structured within the Quality of Life at Work Program, already existing in the company, with individual assistance modalities, conversation groups and in an online format. Results: With the publicity of the program, workers were more comfortable seeking assistance from the program's psychologist and were interested in conversation groups. During one year, 238 workers sought assistance. From then on, the promotion of care for workers' mental health occurred through the maintenance of individual care groups. Conclusion: Mental health care in the corporate context is essential to promote the physical and psychological integrity of workers. However, it is necessary for the company to invest more in informative campaigns with care for mental health, as during one year, only 19.83% of workers sought the services proposed by the company, in addition to the implementation of a health program of workers, values the profession of occupational nurses and provides support for the continuity and quality of care for those they assist.

Objective: to analyze the structural empowerment of nurses in a high-complexity hospital. Methods: a quantitative, analytical, cross-sectional study was carried out with 93 nurses, using a sociodemographic and occupational questionnaire and the Questionnaire of Conditions of Effectiveness at Work II. The data was collected between February and March 2023. The data was analyzed using descriptive statistics, the Kolgomorov-Smirnov test, the chi-square test, and Poisson regression. Results: the nurses had a moderate structural empowerment level, with a mean of 20.67 (p<0.000). The highest scoring component was opportunity (4.22 sd±0.80). No significant differences were found in the structural empowerment levels related to work units (p-Value 0.381), employment relationship (p-Value 0.352) and education level (p-Value 0.839). The Poisson regression model indicates that there can be either high or low empowerment levels depending on the sector. Conclusion: nurses showed moderate structural empowerment levels.
