RESUMEN

Women were more affected than men during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study aimed to investigate COVID-19-related stress response in adult women and its association with the relevant socioeconomic, lifestyle and COVID-19-related factors. This research was carried out in eight randomly chosen cities from September 2020 to October 2021. To examine stress, we distributed the COVID Stress Scales (CSS) and the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS). Women also fulfilled a general socio-epidemiologic questionnaire. The study included 1,264 women. Most women were healthy, highly educated, employed, married, nonsmokers who consumed alcohol. The average total CSS score suggested a relatively low COVID-19 related stress), while 1.7% of women had CSS ≥ 100. The mean PSS was around the mid-point value of the scale. Older women, who were not in a relationship, didn't smoke, didn't drink alcohol, but used immune boosters, had chronic illnesses and reported losing money during the pandemic had higher CSS scores. A higher level of stress was also experienced by women exposed to the intense reporting about COVID-19, had contact with COVID-19 positive people or took care of COVID-19 positive family members. In this sample of predominantly highly educated women few women experienced very high stress level, probably due to the study timing (after the initial wave) when the pandemic saw attenuated stress levels. To relieve women from stress, structural organization and planning in terms of health care delivery, offsetting economic losses, controlled information dissemination and psychological support for women are needed.

RESUMEN

Background and Objectives: In the development of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and its complications, genetic and environmental factors play important roles. Diabetic nephropathy (DN), one of the major microangiopathic chronic diabetic complications, is associated with an increased risk of major cardiovascular events and all-cause mortality. The present study was designed to investigate the possible modifying effect of glutathione transferase polymorphisms (GSTM1, GSTT1, GSTP1 rs1138272/rs1695, GSTO1 rs4925 and GSTO2 rs156697) in the susceptibility to T2DM and diabetic nephropathy. Materials and Methods: GSTM1 and GSTT1 deletion polymorphisms were determined by multiplex PCR, whereas GSTO1, GSTO2, and GSTP1 polymorphisms were determined by the real-time PCR in 160 T2DM patients and 248 age- and gender-matched controls. Advanced glycation end products (AGEs) were measured by ELISA. Results: Among six investigated GST polymorphisms, a significant association between the GST genotypes and susceptibility for development of diabetes mellitus was found for the GSTM1, GSTT1, GSTP1 (rs1138272) and GSTO1 polymorphisms. When the GST genotypes' distribution in diabetes patients was assessed in the subgroups with and without diabetic nephropathy, a significant association was found only for the GSTO2 rs156697 polymorphism. Diabetic patients, carriers of the GSTM1 null, GSTT1 null and variant GSTO1*AA genotypes, had significantly increased levels of AGEs in comparison with carriers of the GSTM1 active, GSTT1 active and referent GSTO1*CC genotypes (p < 0.001, p < 0.001, p = 0.004, respectively). Conclusions: The present study supports the hypothesis that GST polymorphisms modulate the risk of diabetes and diabetic nephropathy and influence the AGEs concentration, suggesting the potential regulatory role of these enzymes in redox homeostasis disturbances.

RESUMEN

Aims: The aim of this study was to compare the risk factors and prevalence of vascular calcification (VC) in pre-dialysis and hemodialysis (HD) patients with Balkan endemic nephropathy (BEN) or other kidney diseases (non-BEN). Materials and Methods: The study involved 115 patients, 32 pre-dialysis and 83 HD patients, separated into groups of BEN and non-BEN patients. In addition to interviews, objective examinations and laboratory analyses, VC was assessed using Adragao score. Results: Patients with BEN were significantly older in both groups, while pre-dialysis BEN patients had significantly lower systolic blood pressure, serum cholesterol and phosphorus levels, but higher urinary excretion of phosphorus than non-BEN patients. These differences were lost in HD groups. In pre-dialysis patients, prevalence of VC was lower in BEN than in non-BEN group and mean VC score differed significantly between them (2.8 (1.7) vs. 4.6 (1.8); p = 0.009). No significant difference in VC score was found between BEN and non-BEN patients on HD. Multivariate analysis showed that in pre-dialysis patients VC score >4 was associated with lower iPTH and higher serum cholesterol level, but in the HD group with higher serum triglyceride level and longer HD vintage. Conclusions: Lower prevalence of risk factors for VC in the BEN than non-BEN patients was found in pre-dialysis but not in HD group and this was reflected in the prevalence and severity of VC in the groups. Prevalence of VC and mean VC score were significantly lower in pre-dialysis BEN than in non-BEN patients but not for those on HD.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Benzodiazepines have a direct bronchodilatory effect. Methacholine is a non-selective muscarinic receptor agonist causing bronchoconstriction. AIM: To examine the effects of inhaled benzodiazepines, modulating bronchoconstriction induced by methacholine in patients with asthma. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Twelve patients with well controlled asthma were studied. On the first day, after determining the initial values of pulmonary function, a dose response curve was carried out with progressive doses of methacholine. After the last dose, when at least a 20% drop of the initial forced expiratory volume in the first second (FEV1) was achieved, vital capacity (VC) and FEV1 were measured at 7, 15 and 30 minutes after provocation. On the second day a diazepam aerosol was inhaled by the patients prior to the same protocol with methacholine. RESULTS: In the first day of testing, methacholine inhalation (6 mg/mL) led to a significant drop in FEV1 from 2.98 to 1.69 L. On the second day of study, in the same patients, previous inhalation with diazepam reduced the changes of FEV1 after inhalation of methacholine. This parameter decreased from 2.48 to 2.21 L. CONCLUSIONS: Inhalation of benzodiazepines reduce bronchoconstriction after a methacholine challenge in patients with asthma.

RESUMEN

The nature of mental disorders, the attitudes and prejudices of the social community towards psychiatric patients, the behavior and treatment of mental patients, all bring about numerous dilemmas and prejudices. When a patient is diagnosed with a mental disorder, he may suffer restrictions in the field of general human rights. However, the biggest problems in clinical practice occur in the treatment of patients who, besides their mental disorder also have a somatic disease. We report a 56-years-old female with a severe renal failure who refused to undergo dialysis. Following the patient's refusal to sign an informed consent, a psychiatrist was called in for consultation and diagnosed an acute psychotic reaction. To manage the delusions and acute psychotic reactions, risperidone in the dose of 2 mg was started. After 22 days, the patient still had marked psychotic symptoms. A psychiatrist, a nephrologist and an anesthesiologist, in the presence of the spouse on the grounds of her life-threatening condition, decided to apply the necessary medical procedures even without the patient's consent. A day after the start of dialysis the patient still had delusional ideas, but without the presence of anxiety, and the patient no longer offered resistance to dialysis. Four days after the first dialysis, the patient was calm, had vague memories about the entire previous period, and signed the informed consent concerning her further treatment.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Frequent episodes of nasal symptoms are the usual clinical manifestations (CM) of allergic rhinitis (AR) and have a significant negative impact on health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in adolescents. The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to test the hypothesis that cytokines in nasal mucus may be associated with HRQoL in adolescents with AR. METHODS: European Quality of Life 5 Dimensions 3 Level Version (EQ-5D-3L), "The Adolescent Rhinoconjunctivitis Quality of Life Questionnaire" (AdolRQLQ) and the Total 4 Symptom Score (T4SS) scoring system were administered to 113 adolescents with AR, nonallergic rhinitis (NAR) and to healthy control subjects. Nasal secretions were sampled and tested for 13 cytokines using a multiplex flow cytometric bead assay. RESULTS: The AR group had significantly lower EQ-5D-3L (0.661 ± 0.267 vs. 0.943 ± 0.088; p < 0.001) and higher AdolRQLQ total scores (2.76 ± 1.01 vs. 1.02 ± 0.10; p < 0.001) compared to the control group. The AR group had higher concentrations of IL-1ß (p = 0.002), IL-6 (p = 0.031), IL-8 (p < 0.001), IL17-A (p = 0.013) and IL-18 (p = 0.014) compared to the control group, and IL-1ß, IL-6, IL17-A and IL-18 were significantly (p < 0.050) increased with disease progression. Cytokines IL-1ß, IL-6, as well as severe CM, were identified as significant predictors of lower HRQoL in adolescents with AR. CONCLUSIONS: This study identified IL-1ß, IL-6, as well as severe CM, as predictors of lower HRQoL in adolescents with AR. However, these results should only serve as a starting point for additional confirmation research.

RESUMEN

Background: Severe coagulation abnormalities are common in patients with COVID-19 infection. We aimed to investigate the relationship between pro-inflammatory cytokines and coagulation parameters concerning socio-demographic, clinical, and laboratory characteristics. Methods: Our study included patients hospitalized during the second wave of COVID-19 in the Republic of Serbia. We collected socio-demographic, clinical, and blood-sample data for all patients. Cytokine levels were measured using flow cytometry. Results: We analyzed data from 113 COVID-19 patients with an average age of 58.15 years, of whom 79 (69.9%) were male. Longer duration of COVID-19 symptoms before hospitalization (B = 69.672; p = 0.002) and use of meropenem (B = 1237.220; p = 0.014) were predictive of higher D-dimer values. Among cytokines, higher IL-5 values significantly predicted higher INR values (B = 0.152; p = 0.040) and longer prothrombin times (B = 0.412; p = 0.043), and higher IL-6 (B = 0.137; p = 0.003) predicted longer prothrombin times. Lower IL-17F concentrations at admission (B = 0.024; p = 0.050) were predictive of higher INR values, and lower IFN-γ values (B = -0.306; p = 0.017) were predictive of higher aPTT values. Conclusions: Our findings indicate a significant correlation between pro-inflammatory cytokines and coagulation-related parameters. Factors such as the patient's level of education, gender, oxygen-therapy use, symptom duration before hospitalization, meropenem use, and serum concentrations of IL-5, IL-6, IL-17F, and IFN-γ were associated with worse coagulation-related parameters.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND/AIMS: The aim of this study was to find out the prevalence of the most frequent risk factors for chronic kidney disease (CKD) and the prevalence of urinary abnormalities in adult inhabitants of three Balkan endemic nephropathy (BEN) villages near Bijeljina, Bosnia and Herzegovina. METHODS: The survey consisted of an interview, blood pressure measurement, and urine dipstick test for proteinuria, hematuria, and glycosuria. RESULTS: The study involved 1625 (739 males, aged 51 ± 16 years) subjects: 319 (19.6%) with positive family history for BEN, 585 (36%) with hypertension, 604 (37.2%) above 60 years, 146 (9%) with diabetes, and 566 (34.8%) with none of these risk factors. Proteinuria was present in 6.2-7.1% of the subjects with risk factors for CKD but in 3.4% of those without risk factors. Systolic blood pressure and BEN in brother/sister were found to be significant variables associated with proteinuria, but female gender and history of kidney disease with hematuria. CONCLUSION: In addition to a family burden for BEN, other risk factors for CKD were highly prevalent in BEN villages of the Bijeljina municipality. The frequency of proteinuria was higher in the at-risk group than in the group without risk factors and increased with the number of risk factors.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Frequent use of Facebook and other social networks is thought to be associated with certain behavioral changes, and some authors have expressed concerns about its possible detrimental effect on mental health. In this work, we investigated the relationship between social networking and depression indicators in adolescent population. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Total of 160 high school students were interviewed using an anonymous, structured questionnaire and Back Depression Inventory - second edition (BDI-II-II). Apart from BDI-II-II, students were asked to provide the data for height and weight, gender, average daily time spent on social networking sites, average time spent watching TV, and sleep duration in a 24-hour period. RESULTS: Average BDI-II-II score was 8.19 (SD=5.86). Average daily time spent on social networking was 1.86 h (SD=2.08 h), and average time spent watching TV was 2.44 h (SD=1.74 h). Average body mass index of participants was 21.84 (SD=3.55) and average sleep duration was 7.37 (SD=1.82). BDI-II-II score indicated minimal depression in 104 students, mild depression in 46 students, and moderate depression in 10 students. Statistically significant positive correlation (p<0.05, R=0.15) was found between BDI-II-II score and the time spent on social networking. CONCLUSIONS: Our results indicate that online social networking is related to depression. Additional research is required to determine the possible causal nature of this relationship.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Subjects that spend more time working on computers or watching television could have a higher body mass index. AIM: To assess the relationship between time spent in front of a screen and studying, body mass index (BMI), smoking, and sleep duration among university students. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A cross-sectional study of 734 randomly selected students aged 21 ± 2 years (450 females) that responded an anonymous, structured questionnaire about time spent watching television or in front of a computer, time spent studying, number of daily hours of sleep, smoking habits and number of daily meals. Body mass index was also calculated for all subjects RESULTS: Among males, the number of daily sleep hours, time spent working with computers and number of daily meals were significantly higher and time spent studying was significantly lower than females. Nonsmokers ate a significantly higher number of meals and spent less time watching television. No association was observed between time spent in front of a screen and number of sleep hours of body mass index. CONCLUSIONS: Men and smokers spend more time working in computers. There is no association between body mass index and time spent in front of screens.

RESUMEN

Background: Risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) has been associated with stress from serving in a war, but it has not been established whether children who experience war-related stress are at increased CVD risk. Objective: This study aimed to compare CVD risk factors in young adults according to whether they experienced traumatic events as children during the 1990-1995 war in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and whether those exposed to trauma have evidence of subclinical atherosclerosis. Method: We examined 372 first-year medical students who were preschool children during the war (1990-1995) (average age 19.5 ± 1.7 years, 67% female) in 2007-2010. They completed the Semi-Structured Interview for Survivors of War. CVD risk factors and carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) measurements were obtained and compared in individuals with and without trauma. We also examined whether increased CIMT was independently associated with trauma after adjustment for other risk factors. Results: From multiple logistic regression, only elevated triglycerides (> 1.7 mmol/l) were associated with a 5.2 greater odds of having experienced trauma. The mean CIMT of subjects with trauma was greater than that of non-trauma-exposed subjects (0.53 mm vs 0.50 mm, p = 0.07). Moreover, trauma was independently associated with higher CIMT (difference = 0.036 mm, p = 0.024) after adjustment for CVD risk factors. Conclusions: We show that most CVD risk factors are associated with post-war trauma in young adults, and, if present, such trauma is associated with higher triglycerides and higher levels of CIMT in multivariable analysis.

BACKGROUND: Curriculum reforms in medical schools require cultural and conceptual changes from the faculty. AIMS AND METHODS: We assessed attitudes towards curriculum reforms in different academic, economic, and social environments among 776 teachers from 2 Western European medical schools (Belgium and Denmark) and 7 medical schools in 3 countries in post-communist transition (Croatia, Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina). The survey included a 5-point Likert-type scale on attitudes towards reforms in general and towards reforms of medical curriculum (10 items each). RESULTS: Teaching staff from medical schools in Bosnia and Herzegovina had a more positive attitude towards reforms of medical curriculum (mean score 36.8 out of maximum 50 [95% CI 36.1 to 37.3]) than those from medical schools in Croatia or Slovenia (30.7 [29.8 to 31.6]) or Western Europe (27.7 [27.1 to 28.3]) (P < 0.001, ANOVA). Significant predictors of positive attitudes towards medical curriculum reform in post-communist transition countries, but not in Western European schools, was younger age, as well as female gender in Bosnia and Herzegovina. CONCLUSIONS: Factors influencing faculty attitudes may not be easy to identify and may be specific for different settings. Their identification and management is necessary for producing sustainable curriculum reform.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The caudate circuit takes part in cognitive control of motor activity. The purpose of the present work was registration and analysis of basic bioelectrical activity of ventral and dorsal sensory-motor cortex and nucleus caudate, study of the changes in EEG after nucleus caudate electrical stimulation and to identify of threshold level of electrical stimuli responsible for changes of electrical activity in registered brain area. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We used 28 albino Wistar rat of both genders. After the animal fixation on stereotaxic apparatus to dry bone, the places for electrode fixation were marked. Two days after the electrodes had been implanted an EEG was registered so that the animals would adjust to the conditions and so they would repair the tissue reactions. EEG was registered with bipolar electrodes with ten-channeled apparatus. For first half an hour spontaneous activity of the brain was registered, and after that the head of nucleus caudate was stimulated with altered impulses of various voltages, frequency and duration. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: Threshold values of electric stimulus intensity from 3 to 5 V, frequency from 3 to 5 Hz, duration from 3 to 5 ms, by stimulation the head of nucleus caudate of rat, lead to the change of basal bioelectric activity of cerebrum. The change of bioelectric activity is firstly recorded in equilateral cortex, and with the higher intensity of the stimulus the changes overtake the contra lateral cortex.

RESUMEN

Internet addiction is a novel and relatively uninvestigated form of dependence that is fairly common in adolescent population. Previous research has indicated that it may be associated with other mental health problems, such as dysthymic mood and narcissistic behavior. In our study, we tested the existence and strength of relationship between Internet addiction, self-esteem and narcissism in a student population. On a sample of 244 students, we also investigated social networking activities, such as number of self-portrait photographs ("selfies"), and their potential connection with self-esteem and narcissism. Each participant completed a questionnaire consisting of Young Internet Addiction Test, Rosenberg Self-Esteem scale, and Narcissistic Personality Inventory. There was a statistically significant negative correlation between internet addiction score and self-esteem. Internet addiction increased as self-esteem decreased and vice versa. On the other hand, there was a positive correlation between internet addiction and narcissism. NPI score and number of self-portrait photographs (selfies) on Facebook were also in a positive relationship. Conversely, NPI score increased as the self-esteem decreased. The results of the study are in accordance with our previous findings on Internet use and mental health, confirming that Internet addiction is a potentially a serious public health problem.

RESUMEN

Introduction: Vascular calcifications (VC) are common in patients with chronic kidney disease and present one of manifestations of mineral and bone disorders in these patients. Objective: The aim of this pilot study was to examine the prevalence and risk factors of VC in pre-dialysis patients with Balkan endemic nephropathy (BEN) and other kidney diseases. Methods: The study involved 32 pre-dialysis patients, 15 with BEN and 17 with other kidney diseases. All the patients underwent an interview, objective examination, routine laboratory analyses and measurement of serum concentration of intact parathyroid hormone (iPTH), 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 [25(OH)D3] and osteopontin. VCs in iliac, femoral, radial, and digital arteries were evaluated and Adragao VC score was calculated. The samples of radial artery were collected during the first creation of an arteriovenous fistula, and expression of osteocalcin, bone morphogenic protein-2 osteopontin, and matrix Gla-protein in arterial wall were examined. Results: Patients with BEN were significantly older (71.1 ± 6.1 vs. 54.7 ± 11.1 years), but they had significantly lower systolic and mean blood pressure (95.7 ± 13.2 mmHg vs. 104.3 ± 7.4 mmHg) and lower serum concentration of phosphorus (1.32 ± 0.36 mmol/l vs. 1.65 ± 0.35 mmol/l) and cholesterol (4.3 ± 1.1 mmol/l vs. 5.2 ± 0.8 mmol/l) than patients with other kidney diseases. Mean VC score was significantly lower in patients with BEN than in those with other kidney diseases (2.8 ± 1.7 vs. 4.6 ± 1.8; p = 0.009), but expression of four examined proteins in arterial wall differed insignificantly between the two groups. VC score correlated significantly with serum concentrations of cholesterol, triglycerides (positively), and iPTH (negatively). Conclusion: Pre-dialysis BEN patients had a significantly lower mean score of VC than patients with other kidney diseases.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Tobacco smoking amongst the young is a matter of public health concern because of the immediate and long-term health consequences associated with tobacco use, such as asthma, cancers, and cardiovascular diseases. The purpose of this study was to identify the determinants of smoking initiation among a sample of high school students in Bosnia and Herzegovina. METHODS: The study was conducted among 198 high school students in Zvornik, Bosnia and Herzegovina, during April 2013. A self-administered, pre-tested, structured, close-ended questionnaire was used for data collection. RESULTS: Fourth grade students mainly initiated smoking in high school (45%), while the majority of third and second grade students initiated smoking in primary school. Among students who smoke, an average duration of the smoking habit was <2 years. A multivariate analysis showed that males were 5.27 times more likely to have initiated smoking. For every unit increase in pro-smoking attitude towards smoking, students were 5.3 times more likely to have initiated smoking. Those with parents and friends who are smokers were 6.106 and 5.175 times, respectively, more likely to have initiated smoking. CONCLUSION: This study indicates that a high proportion of 15-18 year olds in the town of Zvornik are current smokers. Gender, age, and parent and peer influence were identified as important associations with smoking. Interventions should not only be confined to the secondary school environment but they should also extend to their places of residence so that influences in the home environment and social surroundings that contribute to tobacco use are also tackled.

RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study has been to identify which risk factors can influence bilateral anterior cruciate ligament injury. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Thirty-two operated patients took part in this survey during the period of ten years. There were 5 women and 27 men, with average age of 30.46 years (19-55). The respondents filled in the questionnaire by answering the questions regarding the time when getting injured and operated, mechanism of injuries, genetic and anthropometric data, characteristics of sports and every day activities. RESULTS: The incidence of reconstructed bilateral injuries in relation to unilateral ones was 2.3% (50/2168). The age of respondents and side of the injured knee did not correlate significantly with the achieved subjective physical activity level after the second knee surgery. The average time from the first injury to operation was 10 months and 4.3 years since that moment up to the injury of the other knee. It took more than 9 months on average until the reconstruction of contralateral anterior cruciate ligament. The most of athletes were injured in football matches. Three-quarters of athletes returned to competition activities after the first operation, which caused the same injury of the contralateral knee. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: Anterior cruciate ligament rupture of the contralateral knee most often occurs in young active athletes within the first four years after the initial reconstruction. Its frequency is not affected by sex, side of extremity, genetic predisposition, type of sport, concomitant injuries and the choice of graft. Returning to the same or higher level of sports activities after the first reconstruction is one of the preconditions for injuring the other knee in the same way.

RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: The aim of study was to analyze the influence of bilateral anterior cruciate ligament reconstructions on life quality of patients and their return to sports activities. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Thirty-two operated patients took part in this survey during the period of ten years. There were 5 women and 27 men, their average age being 30.46 years (19-55). The participants answered a modified Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score questionnaire set and gave data about preoperative and postoperative periods. RESULTS: The participants' age and parameters of Lysholm scale did not correlate significantly with the subjective level of physical activity after the second knee surgery. After the first anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction, 4 participants (12.5%) did not return to trainings, while 28 did (87.5%); 8 patients (25%) did not return to competitions and 24 of them (75%) achieved the competition level of sports activities. After the anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction of contralatera knee, 6 (18.8%) did not return to trainings, while 26 (81.3%) did; 15 patients (46.9%) did not return to competitions, while 17 (53.1% continued to compete without restrictions. The average values of questionnaire scores were between 95.1-98.2 points. Discussion and CONCLUSION: Resuming the same or higher level of sports activitie., after the first reconstruction is one of the preconditions for the same injury of another knee. An athlete looses more than two and a half years of competitions on average. Operations of additional meniscu ruptures do not play a crucial role in restitution of sports activities Although we achieved good operative results, only every seconc athlete with bilateral injury has returned to sports activities withou restrictions after the bilateral anterior cruciate reconstructions.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: In the present study, the audit of medical files of patients with diabetes, followed in family medicine practices in the eastern region of Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH), was carried out in order to investigate the frequency of the use of screening tests for early diagnosis of diabetes complications. METHODS: The audit was conducted in 32 family medicine practices from 12 primary health care centers in the eastern part of BiH over one-year period (March 2010 to March 2011). A specially established audit team randomly selected medical files of 20 patients with diabetes from the Diabetes Registry administered by each family medicine team database. Screening tests assessed are selected according to the ADA guidelines. RESULTS: Frequency of the individual screening test varied between 99%, found for at least one blood pressure measurement, and 3.8% for ABI measurement. When the frequency of optimal use of screening was analyzed, only 1% of patients received all recommended screening tests. CONCLUSION: The frequency of the use of screening tests for chronic diabetes complications was found to be low in the eastern part of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Multivariate linear regression analysis showed that longer duration of diabetes and a larger number of diabetics per practice were associated with a smaller number of screening tests, but specialists in family medicine provided a higher number of screening tests compared to other physicians.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND/AIM: The cell line C6 is a continuous cell line of rat glioma and, as a transplantable line, is frequently used for induction into in vivo model of primary brain tumor. It is believed that, pursuant to its histological traits and biological behavior, this experimental tumor corresponds to human anaplastic astrocytoma of grade II/III, which is characterized by proliferative and invasive potency, and marked cell differentiation. The aim of this study was to determine macroscopic analysis of rat brain with implanted tumor during tumorigenesis, histological features of tumor cells of induced brain tumor and markers of proliferation (proliferation cell nuclear antigen - PCNA, cytokeratin - CK 19) and differentiation (glial fibrillary acidic protein -GFAP) in rat brain with implanted tumor. METHODS: To determine histological structure of the brain with implanted C6 cells, we used brain sections stained for hematoxylin-eosin or kresyl violet, whereas other sections were immunohistochemically stained for GFAP, CK 19 and PCNA. RESULTS: A statistically significant difference in weights of the left and right brain hemispheres with implanted tumors during tumorigenesis in as soon as 7 days from the day of inducing tumors was revealed. The tumor was of cellular type, with distinct pleomorphism of cells and frequent hyperchromasia of the nucleus. Immunohistochemical staining for PCNA revealed a significant number of positive cells on the days 7, 14 and 21 day following the implantation of C6 cells. CK 19 positive cells were present in both brain hemispheres, and numerous GFAP positive astrocytes were found around the puncture lesion. CONCLUSIONS: Within the experimental conditions of the present research, C6 glioma did not demonstrate any relevant deviations concerning development, clinical symptomatology and macroscopic anatomy relative to those already described in the literature.
