RESUMEN

States may protect coral reefs using biological water quality standards outlined by the Clean Water Act. This requires biological assessments with indicators sensitive to human disturbance and regional, probability-based survey designs. Stony coral condition was characterized on a regional scale for the first time in the nearshore waters of the US Virgin Islands (USVI). Coral composition, abundance, size, and health were assessed at 66 stations in the St. Croix region in fall 2007 and at 63 stations in the St. Thomas and St. John region in winter 2009. Indicators were chosen for their sensitivity to human disturbance. Both surveys were probability-based (random) designs with station locations preselected from areas covered by hardbottom and coral reef substrate. Taxa richness was as high as 21 species but more than half the area of both regions exhibited taxa richness of <10 species in the 25 m(2) transect area. Coral density was as high as 5 colonies m(-2) but more than half the area of both regions had <2 colonies m(-2). Both regions showed similar dominant species based on frequency of occurrence and relative abundance. Because of large colony sizes, Montastrea annularis provided more total surface area and live surface area than more abundant species. The surveys establish baseline regional conditions and provide a foundation for long-term regional monitoring envisioned by the USVI Department of Planning and Natural Resources. The probabilistic sampling design assures the data can be used in Clean Water Act reporting.

RESUMEN

The high-pressure structures of K-Ag alloys were examples of pressure-induced electron transfer from the electropositive potassium to the electronegative silver. We re-examined the crystal and electronic structures of KAg2, K2Ag, and K3Ag using powder X-ray diffraction and theoretical calculations. Our findings establish a connection between the morphologies of these three phases and the precursor face-centered cubic Ag. For K2Ag, we discovered a disordered structure that better matches the X-ray pattern. Valence electron density distributions obtained from the maximum entropy method, along with charge density calculations, provide a comprehensive understanding of the evolution of chemical bonding in these systems. It was found that K atoms share their valence electrons during alloy formation, contributing to K-Ag and Ag-Ag bonds in K2Ag and KAg2, while no Ag-Ag bonds are present in K3Ag. These results indicate the Zintl-Klemm model may be too simplistic to describe the structure and bonding in high-pressure binary intermetallic compounds.

RESUMEN

Background: Benign biliary strictures (BBS) befall in ∼7%-23% after hepaticojejunostomy and in 0.3%-0.6% after cholecystectomies. Their treatment options include surgical, endoscopic, and percutaneous management. The percutaneous approach is an excellent mini-invasive option including balloon dilation, biodegradable stents, and sustained dilation, a procedure born endoscopically. However, when the endoscopic approach fails or it is not available, it is possible to perform it percutaneously. Aim: To estimate the technical and clinical success of sustained percutaneous dilation with multiple catheters (SPDMC) in hepaticojejunostomy strictures and the percentage of complications and recurrence. Materials and Methods: We conducted a retrospective study, from a prospective database from January 2010 to March 2019, of 17 patients with postoperative BBS who failed to percutaneous pneumatic balloon dilation and underwent SPDMC with a mean follow-up of 2 years. Results: Seventeen patients between 28 and 71 years of age underwent SPMDC with technical success of 100%; the average number of catheters used was 5.59 (95% confidence interval [CI] 5.12-6.06) achieving a dilatation diameter of 16.15 mm (95% CI 14.71-17.60), and the therapeutic success rate was 71%, with recurrences of stricture and complications of 29% and 18%, respectively. The mean time with SPMDC was 7.06 months (95% CI 5.56-8.56). The median follow-up after dilation was 16 months, with an average of 27.75 months (95% CI 14.15-41.34). Conclusion: SPMDC is a feasible technique with a high technical success rate, therapeutic success rate, and low morbidity and mortality.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Symptomatic vasospasm (sVSP) is a common complication during the course of aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH). We aimed to evaluate the efficacy and accuracy of transcranial Doppler ultrasound (TCD), performed within the first 3 days of aSAH to predict the development of sVSP. METHODS: We performed a retrospective analysis of our institutional prospectively collected database of patients with aSAH. Patients with aSAH and World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies (WFNS) grades I-III were included in the analysis. A receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was generated to determine cut-off values for mean flow velocities (MFVs) in the middle cerebral artery (MCA) and anterior cerebral artery (ACA) bilaterally to predict sVSP. RESULTS: Fifty-one patients were included in the study. Mean age was 49.8 ± 10.2 years, and 84.3% (43 patients) were women. The accuracy of measured MFVs to predict sVSP was 0.79 [95% confidence interval (CI), 0.69-0.89] and 0.77 (95% CI, 0.64-0.91) for the MCA and the ACA, respectively. In the MCA, an MFV ≥ 74 cm/s was significantly associated with a six-fold increased risk of sVSP, achieving sensitivity greater than 70%. In the ACA, an MFV ≥ 64 cm/s was significantly associated with a nine-fold increased risk of sVSP. CONCLUSION: Early TCD evaluation of MFVs in the MCA and ACA is a useful tool to predict the development of sVSP in patients with acute aSAH.

Pesticide application near to beekeeping areas can affect the survival of the bees and the quality of the products derived of the hive, therefore it is of great importance to assess the residual of these agrochemicals in honey and other bee products. So many methods have been developed for determining pesticide residues in honey samples. Thus, a multi-residue method to determine 30 pesticides in honey bee (organochlorine, organophosphorus, and pyrethroids) has been developed and optimized. The method is based on a liquid-liquid extraction followed by a clean-up step on a silica gel/florisil solidphase column. Pesticides were determined by gas chromatography with micro-electron capture (μ-ECD) and nitrogen phosphorus detection (NPD). The optimization process was performed using the modified Simplex method, to make this 14 variables were chosen and the optimization was conducted in 21 experiments. The results indicated that the method show recoveries between 78.8 and 114.5% and coefficients of variation below 20%.
