RESUMEN

Background Long COVID occurs at a lower frequency in children and adolescents than in adults. Morphologic and free-breathing phase-resolved functional low-field-strength MRI may help identify persistent pulmonary manifestations after SARS-CoV-2 infection. Purpose To characterize both morphologic and functional changes of lung parenchyma at low-field-strength MRI in children and adolescents with post-COVID-19 condition compared with healthy controls. Materials and Methods Between August and December 2021, a cross-sectional clinical trial using low-field-strength MRI was performed in children and adolescents from a single academic medical center. The primary outcome was the frequency of morphologic changes at MRI. Secondary outcomes included MRI-derived functional proton ventilation and perfusion parameters. Clinical symptoms, the duration from positive reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction test result, and serologic parameters were compared with imaging results. Nonparametric tests for pairwise and corrected tests for groupwise comparisons were applied to assess differences in healthy controls, recovered participants, and those with long COVID. Results A total of 54 participants after COVID-19 infection (mean age, 11 years ± 3 [SD]; 30 boys [56%]) and nine healthy controls (mean age, 10 years ± 3; seven boys [78%]) were included: 29 (54%) in the COVID-19 group had recovered from infection and 25 (46%) were classified as having long COVID on the day of enrollment. Morphologic abnormality was identified in one recovered participant. Both ventilated and perfused lung parenchyma (ventilation-perfusion [V/Q] match) was higher in healthy controls (81% ± 6.1) compared with the recovered group (62% ± 19; P = .006) and the group with long COVID (60% ± 20; P = .003). V/Q match was lower in patients with time from COVID-19 infection to study participation of less than 180 days (63% ± 20; P = .03), 180-360 days (63% ± 18; P = .03), and 360 days (41% ± 12; P < .001) as compared with the never-infected healthy controls (81% ± 6.1). Conclusion Low-field-strength MRI showed persistent pulmonary dysfunction in children and adolescents who recovered from COVID-19 and those with long COVID. Clinical trial registration no. RESUMEN

Genetic deficiency of ectodysplasin A (EDA) causes X-linked hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia (XLHED), in which the development of sweat glands is irreversibly impaired, an condition that can lead to life-threatening hyperthermia. We observed normal development of mouse fetuses with Eda mutations after they had been exposed in utero to a recombinant protein that includes the receptor-binding domain of EDA. We administered this protein intraamniotically to two affected human twins at gestational weeks 26 and 31 and to a single affected human fetus at gestational week 26; the infants, born in week 33 (twins) and week 39 (singleton), were able to sweat normally, and XLHED-related illness had not developed by 14 to 22 months of age. BACKGROUND: Increased central venous pressure is inherent in Fontan circulation but not strongly related to Fontan complication. Abnormalities of the lymphatic circulation may play a crucial role in early Fontan complications. METHODS: This was a retrospective, single-center study of patients undergoing Fontan operation from 2008 to 2015. The primary outcome was significant early Fontan complication defined as secondary in-hospital treatment due to peripheral edema, ascites, pleural effusions, protein-losing enteropathy, or plastic bronchitis. All patients received T2-weighted magnetic resonance images to assess abdominal and thoracic lymphatic perfusion pattern 6 months after Fontan completion with respect to localization, distribution, and extension of lymphatic perfusion pattern (type 1-4) and with application of an area score (0-12 points). RESULTS: Nine out of 42 patients developed early Fontan complication. Patients with complication had longer chest tube drainage (mean 28 [interquartile range [IQR]: 13-60] vs. 13 [IQR: 2-22] days, p = 0.01) and more often obstructions in the Fontan circuit 6 months after surgery (56 vs. 15%, p = 0.02). Twelve patients showed little or no abnormalities of lymphatic perfusion (lymphatic perfusion pattern type 1). Most frequently magnetic resonance imaging showed lymphatic congestion in the supraclavicular region (24/42 patients). Paramesenteric lymphatic congestion was observed in eight patients. Patients with early Fontan complications presented with higher lymphatic area score (6 [min-max: 2-10] vs. 2 [min-max: 0-8]), p = 0.001) and greater distribution and extension of thoracic lymphatic congestion (type 3-4: n = 5/9 vs. n = 1/33, p = 0.001). CONCLUSION: Early Fontan complication is related to hemodynamic factors such as circuit obstruction and to the occurrence and extent of lymphatic congestion.

BACKGROUND: Radiation dose at CT should be as low as possible without compromising diagnostic quality. OBJECTIVE: To assess the potential for maximum dose reduction of pediatric lung dual-source CT with spectral shaping and advanced iterative reconstruction (ADMIRE). MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed dual-source CT acquisitions in a full-dose group (FD: 100 kV, 64 reference mAs) and in three groups with spectral shaping and differing reference mAs values (Sn: 100 kV, 96/64/32 reference mAs), each group consisting of 16 patients (age mean 11.5 years, standard deviation 4.8 years, median 12.8 years, range 1.3-18 years). Advanced iterative reconstruction of images was performed with different strengths (FD: ADMIRE Level 2; Sn: ADMIRE Levels 2, 3 and 4). We analyzed dose parameters and measured noise. Diagnostic confidence and detectability of lung lesions as well as anatomical structures were assessed using a Likert scale (from 1 [unacceptable] to 4 [fully acceptable]). RESULTS: Compared to full dose, effective dose was reduced to 16.7% in the Sn 96 group, 11.1% in Sn64, and 5.5% in Sn32 (P<0.001). Noise values of Sn64ADM4 did not statistically differ from those in FDADM2 (45.7 vs. 38.9 Hounsfield units [HU]; P=0.132), whereas noise was significantly higher in Sn32ADM4 compared to Sn64ADM4 (61.5 HU; P<0.001). A Likert score >3 was reached in Sn64ADM4 regarding diagnostic confidence (3.2) and detectability of lung lesions (3.3). For detectability of most anatomical structures, no significant differences were found between FDAM2 and Sn64ADM4 (P≥0.05). CONCLUSION: In pediatric lung dual-source CT, spectral shaping together with ADMIRE 4 enable radiation dose reduction to about 10% of a full-dose protocol while maintaining an acceptable diagnostic quality.

BACKGROUND: Peripherally inserted central catheters (PICCs) provide secure intravenous access for the delivery of life-sustaining medications and nutrition. They are commonly used in pediatrics. Confirmation of correct central catheter tip position is crucial. Verification is usually done by a radiograph. The aim of this study is to evaluate the ability of Fractional Multiscale image Processing (FMP) to detect PICC tips on the digital chest radiographs of neonates. METHODS: A total of 94 radiographs of 47 patients were included in the study. 29 patients were male, 18 were female. The mean age of all examined children was 9.2 days (range 0-99 days). In total, six readers (two radiologists, two residents in radiology, one last year medical student, one neonatologist) evaluated 94 unprocessed and catheter-enhanced radiographs using a 5-point Likert scale (1 = poor catheter tip visualization, 5 = excellent catheter tip visualization). Additionally, the two radiologists evaluated the diagnostic confidence for chest pathologies using a 5-point Likert scale (1 = poor diagnostic confidence, 5 = excellent diagnostic confidence). Radiographs were evaluated on a dedicated workstation. RESULTS: In all cases, the catheter-enhanced radiograph rated higher than (n = 471), or equal (n = 93) to, the unprocessed radiograph when visualizing catheter tips. 87% of the catheter-enhanced radiographs obtained a rating of 4 or higher, while only 42% of unprocessed radiographs received 4 or more points. Regarding diagnostic confidence for chest pathologies one radiologist rated two catheter-enhanced radiographs higher than the unprocessed radiographs, while all other 186 evaluations rated the catheter-enhanced radiographs equal to (n = 78) or lower than (n = 108) the unprocessed radiographs. Only 60% of the catheter-enhanced radiographs yielded a diagnostic confidence of 4 or higher, while 90% of the unprocessed images received 4 or more points. CONCLUSION: Catheter-enhanced digital chest radiographs demonstrate improved visualization of low contrast PICC tips in neonates compared to unprocessed radiographs. Furthermore, they enable detection of accompanying chest pathologies. However, definitive diagnosis of chest pathologies should be made on unprocessed radiographs.

BACKGROUND: Optimal imaging is essential for catheter-based interventions in CHD. The three-dimensional models in volume-rendering technique currently in use are not standardised. This paper investigates the feasibility and impact of novel three-dimensional guidance with segmented and tessellated three-dimensional heart models in catheterisation of CHD. In addition, a nearly radiation-free two- to three-dimensional registration and a biplane overlay were used.Methods and resultsWe analysed 60 consecutive cases in which segmented tessellated three-dimensional heart models were merged with live fluoroscopy images and aligned using the tracheal bifurcation as a fiducial mark. The models were generated from previous MRI or CT by dedicated medical software. We chose the stereo-lithography format, as this promises advantage over volume-rendering-technique models regarding visualisation. Prospects, potential benefits, and accuracy of the two- to three-dimensional registration were rated separately by two paediatric interventionalists on a five-point Likert scale. Fluoroscopy time, radiation dose, and contrast dye consumption were evaluated. Over a 10-month study period, two- to three-dimensional image fusion was applied to 60 out of 354 cases. Of the 60 catheterisations, 73.3% were performed in the context of interventions. The accuracy of two- to three-dimensional registration was sufficient in all cases. Three-dimensional guidance was rated superior to conventional biplane imaging in all 60 cases. We registered significantly smaller amounts of used contrast dye (p<0.01), lower levels of radiation dose (p<0.02), and less fluoroscopy time (p<0.01) during interventions concerning the aortic arch compared with a control group. CONCLUSIONS: Two- to three-dimensional image fusion can be applied successfully in most catheter-based interventions of CHD. Meshes in stereo-lithography format are accurate and base for standardised and reproducible three-dimensional models.

Neoplasms with a myopericytomatous pattern represent a morphological spectrum of lesions encompassing myopericytoma of the skin and soft tissue, angioleiomyoma, myofibromatosis/infantile haemangiopericytoma and putative neoplasms reported as malignant myopericytoma. Lack of reproducible phenotypic and genetic features of malignant myopericytic neoplasms have prevented the establishment of myopericytic sarcoma as an acceptable diagnostic category. Following detection of a LMNA-NTRK1 gene fusion in an index case of paediatric haemangiopericytoma-like sarcoma by combined whole-genome and RNA sequencing, we identified three additional sarcomas harbouring NTRK1 gene fusions, termed 'spindle cell sarcoma, NOS with myo/haemangiopericytic growth pattern'. The patients were two children aged 11 months and 2 years and two adults aged 51 and 80 years. While the tumours of the adults were strikingly myopericytoma-like, but with clear-cut atypical features, the paediatric cases were more akin to infantile myofibromatosis/haemangiopericytoma. All cases contained numerous thick-walled dysplastic-like vessels with segmental or diffuse nodular myxohyaline myo-intimal proliferations of smooth muscle actin-positive cells, occasionally associated with thrombosis. Immunohistochemistry showed variable expression of smooth muscle actin and CD34, but other mesenchymal markers, including STAT6, were negative. This study showed a novel variant of myo/haemangiopericytic sarcoma with recurrent NTRK1 gene fusions. Given the recent introduction of a novel therapeutic approach targeting NTRK fusion-positive neoplasms, recognition of this rare but likely under-reported sarcoma variant is strongly encouraged.

Computed tomography (CT)-angiography is routinely performed prior to catheter-based and surgical treatment in congenital heart disease. To date, little is known about the accuracy and advantage of different 3D-reconstructions in CT-data. Exact anatomical information is crucial. We analyzed 35 consecutive CT-angiographies of infants with congenital heart disease. All datasets are reconstructed three-dimensionally using volume rendering technique (VRT) and threshold-based segmentation (stereolithographic model, STL). Additionally, the two-dimensional maximum intensity projection (MIP) reconstructs two-dimensional data. In each dataset and resulting image, measurements of vascular diameters for four different vessels were estimated and compared to the reference standard, measured via multiplanar reformation (MPR). The resulting measurements obtained via the STL-images, MIP-images, and the VRT-images were compared with the reference standard. There was a significant difference (p < 0.05) between measurements. The mean difference was 0.0 for STL-images, -0.1 for MIP-images, and -0.3 for VRT-images. The range of the differences was -0.7 to 1.0 mm for STL-images, -0.6 to 0.5 mm for MIP-images and -1.1 to 0.7 mm for VRT-images. There was an excellent correlation between the STL-, MIP-, VRT-measurements, and the reference standard. Inter-reader reliability was excellent (p < 0.01). STL-models of cardiovascular structures are more accurate than the traditional VRT-models. Additionally, they can be standardized and are reproducible.

BACKGROUND: Many technical updates have been made in multi-detector CT. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate image quality and radiation dose of high-pitch second- and third-generation dual-source chest CT angiography and to assess the effects of different levels of advanced modeled iterative reconstruction (ADMIRE) in newborns and children. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Chest CT angiography (70 kVp) was performed in 42 children (age 158 ± 267 days, range 1-1,194 days). We evaluated subjective and objective image quality, and radiation dose with filtered back projection (FBP) and different strength levels of ADMIRE. For comparison were 42 matched controls examined with a second-generation 128-slice dual-source CT-scanner (80 kVp). RESULTS: ADMIRE demonstrated improved objective and subjective image quality (P < .01). Mean signal/noise, contrast/noise and subjective image quality were 11.9, 10.0 and 1.9, respectively, for the 80 kVp mode and 11.2, 10.0 and 1.9 for the 70 kVp mode. With ADMIRE, the corresponding values for the 70 kVp mode were 13.7, 12.1 and 1.4 at strength level 2 and 17.6, 15.6 and 1.2 at strength level 4. Mean CTDIvol, DLP and effective dose were significantly lower with the 70-kVp mode (0.31 mGy, 5.33 mGy*cm, 0.36 mSv) compared to the 80-kVp mode (0.46 mGy, 9.17 mGy*cm, 0.62 mSv; P < .01). CONCLUSION: The third-generation dual-source CT at 70 kVp provided good objective and subjective image quality at lower radiation exposure. ADMIRE improved objective and subjective image quality.

BACKGROUND: Cardiac MRI is an accurate and reproducible technique for the assessment of left ventricular volumes and function. The accuracy of automated segmentation and the effects of manual adjustments have not been determined in children. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate automated segmentation and the effects of manual adjustments for left ventricular parameter quantification in pediatric cardiac MR images. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Left ventricular parameters were evaluated in 45 children with suspected myocarditis (age 13.4 ± 3.5 years, range 4-17 years) who underwent cardiac MRI. Dedicated software was used to automatically segment and adjust the parameters. Results of end-diastolic volume, end-systolic volume, stroke volume, myocardial mass, and ejection fraction were documented before and after apex/base adjustment and after apex/base/myocardial contour adjustment. RESULTS: The software successfully detected the left ventricle in 42 of 45 (93.3%) children; failures occurred in the smallest and youngest children. Of those 42 children, automatically segmented end-diastolic volume (EDV) was 151 ± 47 ml, and after apex/base adjustment it was 146 ± 45 ml, after apex/base/myocardial contour adjustment 146 ± 45 ml. The corresponding results for end-systolic volume (ESV) were 66 ± 32 ml, 63 ± 29 ml and 64 ± 28 ml; for stroke volume (SV) they were 85 ± 25 ml, 83 ± 23 ml and 83 ± 23 ml; for ejection fracture (EF) they were 57 ± 10%, 58 ± 9% and 58 ± 9%, and for myocardial mass (MM) they were 104 ± 31 g, 95 ± 31 g and 94 ± 30 g. Statistically significant differences were found when comparing the EDV/ESV/MM results, the EF results after apex/base adjustment and after apex/base/myocardial contour adjustment and the SV results (except for comparing the SVs after apex/base adjustment and after apex/base/myocardial contour adjustment). CONCLUSION: Automated segmentation for the evaluation of left ventricular parameters in pediatric MR images proved to be feasible. Automated segmentation + apex/base adjustment provided clinically acceptable parameters for the majority of cases.

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to review our early experience with the dual source computed tomography (DSCT), a recently available scanner technique equipped with two X-ray tubes and two detectors, in the context of congenital cardiac malformations. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We reviewed 40 pediatric patients with congenital heart disease (CHD) who underwent DSCT between September 2009 and December 2011 as diagnostic imaging tool for surgical procedures. RESULTS: The median age was 0.36 years (range: 3 days to 44 years). Great vessels (n = 13), cardiac anatomy (n = 13), trachea and vascular rings (n = 7), pulmonary veins (n = 4), and coronary arteries (n = 3) were focused on, which revealed important information for surgery. Scanning quality was affected in only two cases (metal artifacts and tachycardia). Overall median age-specific dose was 1.47 mSv. In patients younger than 1 year (n = 26), median dose was 1.28 mSv. CONCLUSION: DSCT allows a very rapid scan speed, examinations are performed in spontaneously breathing patients, and the radiation exposure is relatively low. It is very valuable in the setting of complex surgery by revealing the position of anatomical structures in their relation to each other. Missing information can be acquired less invasively in addition to echocardiography and might replace cardiac catheterization for several morphological indications.

Accurate measurement of testicular volume (TV) in boys is an important tool in clinical practice, e.g., in varicocele treatment. This study aims to assess the degree of intra- and interobserver variability of testicular volume measurements. In a prospective study, boys between 11 and 17 years of age without testicular pathology were enrolled. Testicular ultrasound was performed by three investigators (A: pediatric radiologist; B: pediatric surgery/urology resident; C: pediatric urologist). Intraobserver variability was calculated in investigators B and C and interobserver variability between all three investigators. A total of 30 boys were enrolled. Mean intraobserver variability in both observers was +0.3% with a range of -39.6 to 51.5%. The proportion of measurements with a difference >20% was 18.6%. The mean interobserver variability was -1.0% (range: -74.1% to 62.8%). The overall proportion of measurements with a difference >20% was 35%. A lower testicular size of < 4 mL showed a significantly higher rate of >20% difference in both the intraobserver group (31.1% vs. 14.4%; p = 0.035) and the interobserver group (63.2% vs. 26.2%; p = 0.000031). Furthermore, the rate of >20% difference was significantly lower in obese compared to non-obese patients in both the intraobserver (2.8% vs. 22.4%; p = 0.0084) and the interobserver group (24% vs. 40.8%, p = 0.0427). Both intraobserver and interobserver variability in ultrasound-based TV measurements in pubertal boys contain a relevant degree of uncertainty that renders them unsuitable for individualized follow-up care. At the cohort level, however, mean differences in ultrasound-based TV measurements are low enough to make ultrasound comparisons reasonable.

Multispectral optoacoustic tomography (MSOT) allows non-invasive molecular disease activity assessment in adults with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). In this prospective pilot-study, we investigated, whether increased levels of MSOT haemoglobin parameters corresponded to inflammatory activity in paediatric IBD patients, too. 23 children with suspected IBD underwent MSOT of the terminal ileum and sigmoid colon with standard validation (e.g. endoscopy). In Crohn`s disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC) patients with endoscopically confirmed disease activity, MSOT total haemoglobin (HbT) signals were increased in the terminal ileum of CD (72.1 ± 13.0 a.u. vs. 32.9 ± 15.4 a.u., p = 0.0049) and in the sigmoid colon of UC patients (62.9 ± 13.8 a.u. vs. 35.1 ± 16.3 a.u., p = 0.0311) as compared to controls, respectively. Furthermore, MSOT haemoglobin parameters correlated well with standard disease activity assessment (e.g. SES-CD and MSOT HbT (rs =0.69, p = 0.0075). Summarizing, MSOT is a novel technology for non-invasive molecular disease activity assessment in paediatric patients with inflammatory bowel disease.

This study investigates the crucial factors influencing the end-systolic and end-diastolic volumes in MRI volumetry and their direct effects on the derived functional parameters. Through the simultaneous acquisition of 2D-cine and 3D whole-heart slices in end-diastole and end-systole, we present a novel direct comparison of the volumetric measurements from both methods. A prospective study was conducted with 18 healthy participants. Both 2D-cine and 3D whole-heart sequences were obtained. Despite the differences in the creation of 3D volumes and trigger points, the impact on the LV volume was minimal (134.9 mL ± 16.9 mL vs. 136.6 mL ± 16.6 mL, p < 0.01 for end-diastole; 50.6 mL ± 11.0 mL vs. 51.6 mL ± 11.2 mL, p = 0.03 for end-systole). In our healthy patient cohort, a systematic underestimation of the end-systolic volume resulted in a significant overestimation of the SV (5.6 mL ± 2.6 mL, p < 0.01). The functional calculations from the 3D whole-heart method proved to be highly accurate and correlated well with function measurements from the phase-contrast sequences. Our study is the first to demonstrate the superiority of 3D whole-heart volumetry over 2D-cine volumetry and sheds light on the systematic error inherent in 2D-cine measurements.

(1) Purpose: to compare right ventricular (RV) functional parameters in children with surgically repaired congenital heart disease (CHD) using single/double breath hold (BH) and free-breathing (FB) real-time compressed sensing (CS) cine cardiac magnetic resonance (cMRI) with standard retrospective segmented multi breath hold (RMB) cine cMRI. (2) Methods: Twenty patients with CHD underwent BH and FB, as well as RMB cine cMRI, at 3T to obtain a stack of continuous axial images of the RV. Two radiologists independently performed qualitative analysis of the image quality (rated on a 5-point scale; 1 = non-diagnostic to 5 = excellent) and quantitative analysis of the RV volume measurements. (3) Results: The best image quality was provided by RMB (4.5; range 2-5) compared to BH (3.9; range 3-5; p = 0.04) and FB (3.6; range 3-5; p < 0.01). The RV functional parameters were comparable among BH, FB, and RMB with a difference of less than 5%. The scan times for BH (44 ± 38 s, p < 0.01) and FB (24 ± 7 s, p < 0.01) were significantly reduced compared to for RMB (261 ± 68 s). (4) Conclusions: CS-FB and CS-BH real-time cine cMRI in children with CHD provides diagnostic image quality with excellent accuracy for measuring RV function with a significantly reduced scan time compared to RMB.

Lymphatic congestion in single-ventricle patients has been associated with increased morbidity and poor outcomes. Little is known about the dynamics of lymphatic abnormalities over time, on their association with clinical presentation or response to catheter interventions. This retrospective, single-center study describes Fontan patients who underwent at least two magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies. T2-weighted lymphatic imaging was used to classify thoracic and abdominal (para-aortic and portal-venous) lymphatic abnormalities. The relationship between lymphatic congestion and hemodynamic changes after cardiac catheter interventions, clinical presentation and MRI data was analyzed. A total of 33 Fontan patients underwent at least two cardiac MRI studies. Twenty-two patients had two, eight had three and three had four lymphatic imaging studies (total of 80 MRIs studies). No significant changes in lymphatic classification between MRI 1 and 2 were observed for thoracic (p = 0.400), para-aortic (0.670) and portal-venous (p = 0.822) abnormalities. No significant correlation between lymphatic classification and hemodynamic changes after intervention or MRI parameters was found. This study illustrates thoracic and abdominal lymphatic abnormalities in serial T2-weighted imaging after Fontan. Fontan patients did not demonstrate significant changes in their lymphatic perfusion, despite clinical or hemodynamic changes. We assume that lymphatic congestion might develop after total cavopulmonary connection (TCPC) and remain relatively stable, despite further intervention targeting hemodynamic parameters.

OBJECTIVES: Complications after Fontan surgery have been associated with arise and classification of abnormal thoracic lymphatic perfusion pattern. This study compiles abnormal abdominal lymphatic perfusion patterns and investigates their impact on serum protein readings. METHODS: We performed a retrospective analysis of patients who underwent magnetic resonance imaging with T2-weighted lymphatic imaging and serum protein measurements 6 months after having Fontan surgery. The abdominal lymphatic images were classified according to the anatomical lymphatic drainage patterns into 2 categories: (1) para-aortic (types 1-4); (2) portal-venous (types 1-3). Thoracic lymphatic images were classified (types 1-4) as described earlier. RESULTS: A total of 71 patients were included in the study. Para-aortic lymphatic perfusion patterns were classified as type 1 in 4, type 2 in 13, type 3 in 37 and type 4 in16 out of 71 patients. Portal-venous lymphatic perfusion patterns were classified as type 1 in 20, type 2 in 10 and type 3 in 41 patients. Thoracic lymphatic perfusion patterns were classified as type 1 in 8, type 2 in 11, type 3 in 39 and type 4 in 13 patients. The serum protein level was 66 (interquartile range: 7.5) g/l (< standard value in 37%). Higher-grade para-aortic (p = 0.0062), portal-venous (p = 0.022) and thoracic (p = 0.011) lymphatic abnormalities were correlated with lower total serum protein levels. Higher ratings of para-aortic lymphatic abnormalities were significantly associated with higher ratings of portal-venous abnormalities (p < 0.0001). Ratings of para-aortic and portal-venous classifications were correlated with the thoracic classification (p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Abnormal abdominal lymphatic perfusion patterns can be classified according to anatomical structures with increasing severity. Higher grade abdominal and thoracic lymphatic perfusion patterns are associated with lower serum protein values.
