BACKGROUND: Childhood obesity is becoming a serious problem, and prevention programs are needed. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate, after 1 y, the effectiveness of a multicomponent, school-based obesity intervention program. METHODS: This intervention, conducted in Barcelona, Spain, was a quasi-experimental obesity primary prevention intervention targeting schoolchildren aged 9-10 y. Participants were assigned to an intervention group (IG) (1464 students) or to a comparison group (CG) (1609 students). The intervention consisted of a 9-session classroom program, 6 weekly sessions of physical education and out-of-school physical activity, and a workshop for families. It lasted from October 2011 to May 2012. Data obtained at baseline (spring 2011) and follow-up (spring 2012) included information on nutrition and physical activity, through 2 self-reported questionnaires, and measurement of weight, height, triceps skinfold thickness, and waist circumference. The cumulative incidence rate (CIR) of obesity was calculated from triceps skinfold measures. A multilevel logistic regression model was fitted to determine the association between the intervention and the CIR of obesity. The effect size of the program was estimated with Cohen's criteria. RESULTS: The overall prevalence of obesity at baseline was 12.7%. At the 12-mo follow-up, the incidence of obesity was 7.8% in the IG compared with 11.4% in the CG (P < 0.005), representing 31% fewer new cases of obesity in the IG. The Cohen's d effect size of the program was 0.33. In the multilevel analysis, there was a protective effect of the intervention on the CIR of obesity at 12 mo (OR: 0.7; 95% CI: 0.5, 0.9) (P = 0.009). CONCLUSIONS: The first Prevención de la Obesidad Infantil en Barcelona (Childhood Obesity Prevention in Barcelona) (POIBA) intervention, targeting children aged 9-10 y, reduced the incidence of obesity as measured by adiposity. The intervention could prevent 1 in 3 new cases of childhood obesity in this age range.

The percentage of failure and relapse in the treatment of obesity is high. Where possible, the preferred strategy for preventing obesity is to modify eating habits and lifestyles. This article aims to provide a framework for evidence on the most effective interventions for addressing childhood obesity, both from a prevention point of view, as well as reducing it, when it is already established. After a review of the scientific literature, the issues that must be considered both in the universal and selective prevention of childhood obesity are presented. Also, in light of the controversy over the tools for measuring and controlling the problem, some clarification is provided on the criteria. Finally, the approach to the prevention of overweight and obesity with a community perspective is separated, with two short protocols being offered with diagrams of the basic procedure to follow.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the prevalence of obesity and analyse possible differences in it according to sociodemographic characteristics, diet, physical activity, screen use and family perception of the weight and dietary habits of schoolchildren aged 3 to 4 years in Barcelona. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study in a representative sample of schools selected based on the socioeconomic status (SES) of the corresponding neighbourhood and school ownership. We selected 101 schools in Barcelona and recruited pupils aged 3 to 4 years during the 2016-17 academic year (n = 2936 children). Anthropometric measurements were taken in each participant. Family members completed a questionnaire on eating habits, physical activity, sleeping hours, screen use and the family's perception of the child's weight and diet. The primary variable was the body mass index (BMI) for age and sex, subsequently categorised as normal weight, overweight or obese. RESULTS: Approximately 7.0% of girls and 7.1% of boys aged 3 to 4 years presented obesity. The prevalence of obesity (8.3%) was higher in neighbourhoods of lower SES compared to those of higher SES (5.2%; p = .004). Parents of children with obesity reported that the child had some excess weight or excess weight in 46.9% of cases, 3.9% indicated the child's weight was appropriate and 0.9% that the child was a little underweight or underweight (p < .001). DISCUSSION: The prevalence of obesity in children aged 3 to 4 years is high. There are social and geographical inequalities, and obesity was more prevalent in areas of lower SES. A large percentage of the families of children with obesity do not consider that the child's weight is excessive.

Introduction: Introduction: the components of school menus is an important area in health strategies. Objectives: the aim of this study was to analyse differences in adherence to recommended food frequencies and other characteristics of school meals in educational centres according to the type of school and neighbourhood income. Method: schools in the city of Barcelona with a lunch service were offered a three-year review. In the three academic years, 341 schools participated: 175 were public and 165 were private. To identify any differences, the Pearson Chi-squared test or Fisher exact test were used, as appropriate. Statistical analyses were performed with the STATA SE/15 programme. Results: no statistically significant differences were found by the socioeconomic level of the school neighbourhood. Private and subsidised schools showed lower adherence to recommendations on pasta (11.1 %), red and processed meat (24.7 %), total meat (7.4 %) and fresh fruit (12.1 %), and lower use of the recommended cooking oil (13.1 %). In contrast, public schools showed lower adherence to the recommended type of frying oil (16.9 %). Conclusions: in private and subsidised schools, improvements should be recommended on the frequency of intake of certain foods. Future studies should examine the causes of lower adherence to certain recommendations in these centres.

Objetivos: analizar las diferencias en el cumplimiento de las frecuencias recomendadas de alimentos y otras características del comedor escolar en los centros educativos según su titularidad y la renta del barrio. Métodos: se ofreció la revisión trienal a los centros escolares de la ciudad de Barcelona que disponían de servicio de comedor. En los tres cursos académicos, participaron 341 centros: 175 públicos y 165 de titularidad privada. Para observar si existían diferencias, se utilizó la prueba de Pearson Chi-cuadrado o el test exacto de Fisher según el caso. Los análisis se realizaron con el programa estadístico STATA SE/15. Resultados: no se encontraron diferencias significativas según el nivel socioeconómico del barrio del centro educativo. Los centros educativos privados y concertados presentaban un menor cumplimiento en la pasta (11,1 %), las carnes rojas y procesadas (24,7 %), la carne total (7,4 %) y la fruta fresca (12,1 %), así como un menor uso del aceite recomendado para cocinar (13,1 %). Por el contrario, en los centros educativos públicos se observaba un menor cumplimiento en la recomendación del tipo de aceite para freír (16,9 %). Conclusiones: en los centros privados y concertados es necesario recomendar mejoras en la adecuación de las raciones. Se debería indagar en las causas que pueden explicar esta menor adecuación en varios aspectos como en el cumplimiento de las adecuaciones en estos centros.

BACKGROUND: Interpersonal relationships undoubtedly have a bidirectional connection with the health of individuals and communities. Relational models based on equity contribute to well-being, while asymmetrical relationships based on hierarchies and differences of power negatively impact mental, physical, and social health. METHODS: A conceptual framework for understanding the determinants of interpersonal relational models was developed. RESULTS: Structural determinants were identified as the combined action of systems of oppression, the socio-historical context that normalizes violence, and social stratification and segregation, consequences which included inequitable access to power, resources, and opportunities. Intermediate determinants include individual, psychosocial, behavioral, and community aspects. Structural and intermediate determinants impact health and health inequalities through multiple relational patterns that are simultaneously established and sustained by individuals and communities. The health impact of inequitable relational patterns includes: Reduced self-esteem; anxiety, stress, and depression; acceptance of violence; physical and sexual harm; suicide; and murder. CONCLUSIONS: This conceptual framework allows for the modification of relational models by influencing structural and intermediate determinants. Six areas of intervention have been identified: educative policies, school governance, physical and symbolic space, school curriculum, school-community relations, and socio-educative interventions to promote healthy and equitable relationships. Healthy and equitable relationships are associated with improved subjective well-being, health status and protection from violence. Socio-educational interventions that consider the elements of this conceptual framework may be effective in promoting healthy and equitable relational models.

OBJECTIVE: Implementation fidelity is a key dimension in process evaluation but has been scarcely studied. Reptes is a selective alcohol and cannabis use prevention program performed in vulnerable young people (16-21 years) from different educational and leisure settings. The study aimed to describe the components of this program, its implementation fidelity, and satisfaction among participants and facilitators. METHOD: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted. Implementation fidelity was assessed in terms of adherence, dose, participant responsiveness, and quality of the intervention through self-reports completed by 15 facilitators and self-administered questionnaires by 99 youth from the 15 groups completing the program. RESULTS: 70.7% of the groups performed 30 of the 43 planned activities with high use of various teaching methods, except for Information and Communication Technology resources. Fidelity implementation was above 70%. 2/3 groups completed an acceptable intervention and 1/3 completed a qualified intervention. Satisfaction was higher than 7. CONCLUSIONS: Our results show high implementation fidelity and satisfaction compared with those from similar studies.

OBJECTIVE: Despite the efforts to reduce gender inequality, sexism persists. There are still few studies on this matter that consider variables such as sexual desire or migration background. The aim of this study is to analyse the social circumstances (individual and from the immediate context) associated with sexism as well as its relationship with intimate partner violence perpetration amongst adolescents. METHOD: Cross-sectional study with 1421 students aged 13-17 from Alicante and Terrassa (2019-2021). Sexism was measured with the Ambivalent Sexism Inventory, which assesses ambivalent, hostile and benevolent sexism. Generalized linear models were carried out and stratified by sex to identify variables associated with sexism. A logistic regression model was used to assess the association between sexism and intimate partner violence. RESULTS: The likelihood of a high score in ambivalent sexism was higher in migrants (girls and boys: p<0.01) and adolescents with migrant parents (girls: p<0.01; boys: p<0.05). Non-heterosexual desire was negatively associated with sexism in girls (benevolent: p<0.01) and boys (ambivalent and hostile: p<0.01; benevolent: p<0.05). Hostile sexism showed association with intimate partner violence perpetration, independently of the rest of the adjustment variables included in the model, for both girls (odds ratio [OR]: 1.07; 95% confidence interval [95% CI]: 1.00-1.14) and boys (OR: 1.11; 95% CI: 1.03-1.20). CONCLUSIONS: Sexism is present amongst teenagers and its relationship with intimate partner violence is confirmed. Sexual desire and migration background should be taken into account for intimate partner violence prevention.

BACKGROUND: Dating Violence (DV) is a public health problem that is on the rise. In this paper, we aim to analyse different factors associated with DV victimization among female and male adolescents in Spain, considering socioeconomic circumstances, sexual orientation and the presence of different attitudes and experiences related to violence. METHODS: Cross-sectional data from a convenience sample of 640 ever-partnered adolescents aged 13 to 17 at schools in the cities of Alicante (n = 359, 50.1% girls) and Terrassa (n = 281, 51.9%) in the context of an educational intervention to promote healthy relationships. We calculated the prevalence of different forms of DV (physical, sexual and control and fear) and carried out multivariate regression models by sex. RESULTS: 5.5% of girls and 8.7% of boys declared having suffered lifetime physical and/or sexual violence, while 22% of girls and 20.5% of boys reported control and/or fear victimization. The likelihood of DV was higher among migrants and those with foreign-born parents (aPR girls = 2.1 CI95%: 1.1-3.9; aPR boys = 1.9: CI95%: 1.0-3.6); prior experiences of abuse (aPR girls = 1.6; CI95%: 1.0-2.6; aPR boys = 1.7; CI95%: 1.1-2.6); and those who showed higher levels of machismo (aPR girls = 1.0; CI95%: 1.0-1.1; aPR boys = 1.0; CI95%: 1.0-1.1). In girls, DV increased among those who reported lesbian/bisexual orientation and poor relationship with teachers. CONCLUSIONS: DV is socially patterned and increases among LGB adolescents (especially in the case of girls), migrants, and those with foreign-born parents, and adolescents who reported prior experiences of violence in childhood. Future DV prevention programs should consider social inequalities in the likelihood of DV and by reinforcing adolescents' abilities to recognize social support sources and reject machismo and violence.

Childhood obesity has increased worldwide over the past four decades. This quasi-experimental study aimed to assess the effectiveness of a multicomponent and multilevel school-based intervention (POIBA) at 3 years of follow-up. The nutrition intervention focused on food groups, food pyramid, nutrients, portions, and balanced menus. In total, 3624 children participated in the study. Anthropometric measurements and information on food frequency and behavior, physical activity, and daily screen use were collected in the intervention (IG) and comparison group (CG). Positive unadjusted changes toward adherence to recommendations were found for water, meat, sweets, and fried potato consumption, proper breakfast, not having dinner in front of the TV, out-of-school physical activity, and daily screen use. Three scores were used to calculate the proportion of children making more than one change to improve healthy habits regarding physical activity (global Activity score), nutrition (global Nutrition score), and both (global score). Students exposed to the intervention had a significantly better global Activity score (16.2% IG vs. 11.9% CG; p = 0.012) and Global score (63.9% IG vs. 58.5% CG; p = 0.025). Intervention effects on obesity incidence at 3-year follow-up lost significance but maintained the positive trend. In conclusion, school-based interventions including a family component could be useful to address the childhood obesity problem.

BACKGROUND: The observed positive effects of school-based prevention programs are frequently lower than what was expected, usually due to inadequate implementation. AIMS: To describe the process evaluation of a cannabis use school-based prevention program (xkpts.com), to measure teachers' satisfaction with the program and to define quantitative and qualitative parameters for assessing the exhaustiveness of the intervention. METHODS: Cross-sectional descriptive study. SAMPLE: 117 9th-grade classes in 39 schools (2812 students). The information was gathered by means of a self-report questionnaire for teachers and families. A descriptive analysis was made of the implementation of the intervention in the classrooms and of the families' participation. RESULTS: Teachers' response rate was 65%. Discussion was the method most widely applied (100% of the classrooms) and DVD was the most widely used material (93.4%). Skills training was applied in 72.4% of the classrooms. In 59.2% of the classrooms there was an acceptable intervention (at least 8 of the 16 preventive activities), while in 38.2% there was a qualified intervention (at least 1 activity for each general lesson and 2 for each specific one). Mean score given to the program by teachers was 7.4, and 81.6% of them reported their intention to apply it again. Participation rate of the students' families was 28.3% (796). CONCLUSIONS: The intervention was acceptable in two out of three classrooms, while in four out of ten the protocol was applied strictly. Greater participation of the students' families corresponded to those schools in which the intervention was better implemented.

INTRODUCTION: Introduction: childhood overweight and obesity have increased progressively in the last decades, especially in countries of Southern Europe. Objective: to analyze the association of overweight and obesity childhood in the city of Barcelona according to socioeconomic variables in schoolchildren in third grade primary school. Methods: transversal study. Study population: third grade primary school students in the city of Barcelona in year 2011 (n = 3,624). Body mass index was studied as the dependent variable, and sex, age, social class, parental status, origin, ownership school, neighborhood socioeconomic status of the school and district were studied as independent. Logistic regression models were analyzed, obtaining odds ratio (OR) with 95% confidence intervals (95% CI). Results: the prevalence of overweight and obesity in childhood were 24.5% and 13.8%, respectively. The variables associated with obesity were: boy (OR = 1.26; 95% CI = 1.02-1.57), low socioeconomic status (OR = 1.60; 95% CI = 1.16-2.20), single-parent family (OR = 1.35; 95% CI = 1.03-1.77), immigrant (OR = 1.68; 95% CI = 1.33-2.13) and living in one of the less favored districts of Barcelona. Conclusions: it is evident that social class, origin, family status and the district of residence play an important role in childhood obesity.
INTRODUCCIÓN: Introducción: el sobrepeso y la obesidad infantil han aumentado progresivamente en las últimas décadas, especialmente en países del sur de Europa. Objetivo: analizar la asociación del sobrepeso y la obesidad infantil en la ciudad de Barcelona según variables socioeconómicas en escolares de tercero de Primaria. Métodos: estudio transversal. Población de estudio: alumnos de tercero de Primaria de la ciudad de Barcelona en el año 2011 (n = 3.624). Como variable dependiente se estudió el índice de masa corporal y como independientes: sexo, edad, clase social, situación parental, procedencia, titularidad de la escuela, nivel socioeconómico del barrio de la escuela y distrito. Se realizaron modelos de regresión logística, obteniendo odds ratio (OR) con sus intervalos de confianza al 95% (IC 95%). Resultados: la prevalencia de sobrepeso y obesidad infantil fue del 24,5% y 13,8%, respectivamente. Las variables asociadas a la obesidad fueron: ser niño (OR = 1,26; IC 95% = 1,02-1,57), de nivel socioeconómico bajo (OR = 1,60; IC 95% = 1,16-2,20), en situación familiar monoparental (OR = 1,35; IC 95% = 1,03-1,77), ser inmigrante (OR = 1,68; IC 95% = 1,33-2,13) y residir en uno de los distritos menos favorecidos de Barcelona. Conclusiones: se evidencia que la clase social, la procedencia, la situación familiar y el distrito de residencia juegan un papel importante en la obesidad infantil.

Objetivo: La fidelidad en la implementación es una dimensión clave en el proceso de evaluación, pero hasido escasamente estudiada. Reptes es un programa de prevención selectiva del consumo de alcohol ycánnabis dirigido a jóvenes vulnerables (16-21a nos) de diferentes espacios educativos y de ocio y tiempolibre. El estudio pretende describir los componentes de este programa, su fidelidad de implementacióny la satisfacción de los/las participantes y los/las facilitadores/as.Método: Se realizó un estudio descriptivo transversal. La fidelidad de implementación fue valorada enclave de adherencia, dosis, capacidad de respuesta de los/las participantes y calidad de la interven-ción a través de los informes autocumplimentados por los/las 15 facilitadores/as del programa y loscuestionarios autocompletados por los/las 99 jóvenes de los 15 grupos que completaron el programa.Resultados: El 70,7% de los grupos realizaron 30 de las 43 actividades planificadas, con un uso elevado delas estrategias de aprendizaje, excepto para los recursos basados en las tecnologías de la información yla comunicación. La fidelidad de implementación se situó por encima del 70%. Dos tercios de los gruposcompletaron una intervención aceptable y un tercio completó una intervención cualificada. La satisfacciónse situó por encima de 7.Conclusiones: Nuestros resultados muestran una alta fidelidad en la implementación y la satisfacción encomparación con estudios similares.(AU)

BACKGROUND: Childhood obesity preventive interventions should promote a healthy diet and physical activity at home and school. This study aims to describe a school-based childhood obesity preventive programme (POIBA Project) targeting 8-to-12- year-olds. DESIGN AND METHODS: Evaluation study of a school-based intervention with a pre-post quasi-experimental design and a comparison group. Schools from disadvantaged neighbourhoods are oversampled. The intervention consists of 9 sessions, including 58 activities of a total duration between 9 and 13 hours, and the booster intervention of 2 sessions with 8 activities lasting 3 or 4 hours. They are multilevel (individual, family and school) and multicomponent (classroom, physical activity and family). Data are collected through anthropometric measurements, physical fitness tests and lifestyle surveys before and after the intervention and the booster intervention. In the intervention group, families complete two questionnaires about their children's eating habits and physical activity. The outcome variable is the cumulative incidence rate of obesity, obtained from body mass index values and body fat assessed by triceps skinfold thickness. The independent variables are socio-demographic, contextual, eating habits, food frequency, intensity of physical activity and use of new technologies. EXPECTED IMPACT FOR PUBLIC HEALTH: It is essential to implement preventive interventions at early ages and to follow its effects over time. Interventions involving diet and physical activity are the most common, being the most effective setting the school. The POIBA Project intervenes in both the school and family setting and focuses on the most disadvantaged groups, in which obesity is most pronounced and difficult to prevent.

Objetivo: A pesar de los esfuerzos para reducir la desigualdad de género, el sexismo persiste. Todavía son escasos los estudios sobre este fenómeno que contemplen variables como el deseo sexual o los antecedentes migratorios. El objetivo del estudio es analizar las circunstancias sociales (individuales y del contexto inmediato) asociadas al sexismo y su relación con la conducta violenta en la pareja en población adolescente. Método: Estudio transversal con 1421 estudiantes de 13 a 17 años de Alicante y Terrassa (2019-2020). El sexismo se midió mediante el Ambivalent Sexism Inventory, que valora el sexismo ambivalente, hostil y benevolente. Se utilizaron modelos lineales generalizados estratificados por sexo para identificar variables asociadas al sexismo, y regresión logística para analizar la asociación del sexismo con la conducta violenta en la pareja. Resultados: La probabilidad de puntuar alto en sexismo ambivalente fue mayor en migrantes (chicas y chicos: p < 0,01) e hijos/as de migrantes (chicas: p < 0,01; chicos: p < 0,05). El deseo no heterosexual se asoció negativamente con el sexismo en chicas (benevolente: p < 0,01) y en chicos (ambivalente y hostil: p < 0,01; benevolente: p < 0,05). El sexismo hostil mostró asociación con cometer violencia de pareja, independientemente del resto de las variables, tanto en chicas (odds ratio [OR]: 1,07; intervalo de confianza del 95% [IC95%]: 1,00-1,14) como en chicos (OR: 1,11; IC95%: 1,03-1,20). Conclusiones: El sexismo está presente entre adolescentes y se confirma su relación con la conducta violenta en la pareja. El deseo sexual y los antecedentes migratorios son variables a tener en cuenta en su prevención. (AU)
Objective: Despite the efforts to reduce gender inequality, sexism persists. There are still few studies on this matter that consider variables such as sexual desire or migration background. The aim of this study is to analyse the social circumstances (individual and from the immediate context) associated with sexism as well as its relationship with intimate partner violence perpetration amongst adolescents. Method: Cross-sectional study with 1421 students aged 1317 from Alicante and Terrassa (20192021). Sexism was measured with the Ambivalent Sexism Inventory, which assesses ambivalent, hostile and benevolent sexism. Generalized linear models were carried out and stratified by sex to identify variables associated with sexism. A logistic regression model was used to assess the association between sexism and intimate partner violence. Results: The likelihood of a high score in ambivalent sexism was higher in migrants (girls and boys: p < 0.01) and adolescents with migrant parents (girls: p < 0.01; boys: p < 0.05). Non-heterosexual desire was negatively associated with sexism in girls (benevolent: p < 0.01) and boys (ambivalent and hostile: p < 0.01; benevolent: p < 0.05). Hostile sexism showed association with intimate partner violence perpetration, independently of the rest of the adjustment variables included in the model, for both girls (odds ratio [OR]: 1.07; 95% confidence interval [95% CI]: 1.001.14) and boys (OR: 1.11; 95% CI: 1.031.20). Conclusions: Sexism is present amongst teenagers and its relationship with intimate partner violence is confirmed. Sexual desire and migration background should be taken into account for intimate partner violence prevention. (AU)

Background: It is difficult to obtain good food reports with Food Frequency Questionnaires (FFQ) among children. In addition, validated questionnaires are scarce. Objective: The aim of this study was to validate the 'POIBA-How do we eat?' (POIBA-HDWE) FFQ and whether it could be administered to children under 10 years of age. Design: We validated the FFQ POIBA-HDWE as part of the Childhood Obesity Prevention Program (POIBA project) in Barcelona. Forty-two out of 63 primary school students (9-10 years old) answered three questionnaires: FFQ POBA-HDWE; another questionnaire, 'POIBA-How do our children eat?' (POIBA-HDOCE), which was administered to the children's parents; and the 24-h recall computer program 'Young Adolescents' Nutrition Assessment on Computer' (YANA-C), which was used on three different days as a gold standard. We tested for correlations using the Spearman test for non-parametric variables. Results: We found low compliance with food recommendations (<50%). The POIBA-HDWE and POIBA-HDOCE questionnaires showed a moderate correlation for soft drinks (r = 0.49; p < 0.01), nuts (r = 0.59; p < 0.01), dairy products (r = 0.41; p < 0.01) and juices (r = 0.49; p < 0.01). There were moderate correlations between POIBA-HDWE and YANA-C for fried potatoes (r = 0.42; p = 0.01), dairy products (r = 0.53; p < 0.01), juices (r = 0.41; p < 0.01), and grains(r = 0.50; p < 0.01). Food frequency questions showed a homogeneity of 0.69, and a sensitivity of over 60% for all food items except chips (37.5%) and sweets (51.7%). Conclusions: The POIBA-HDWE FFQ showed moderate correlations with the gold standard, high sensitivity for most food types and acceptable internal consistency. It is an easy and affordable tool for recording food frequency in children under 10 years old.

OBJECTIVES: To describe food consumption frequency in adolescents in the context of the financial crisis in 2012, and to analyse potential fluctuations in excess body weight between 2008 and 2012. METHOD: A cross-sectional study of eating habits and excess body weight was conducted in adolescents aged 13 to 19 years old from public, subsidised and private secondary schools in Barcelona, Spain. The FRESC lifestyle risk factors survey was used, and food frequency consumption, food recommendations and body mass index were analysed according to gender, year of education and socioeconomic status. RESULTS: Girls ate vegetables and fruits more frequently than boys, while the prevalence of junk food consumption was higher in boys. The prevalence of compliance with food recommendations was lower than 50% for all foods, and gender and socioeconomic differences were found for eggs, red meat and soft drinks. Regarding excess body weight, boys had a higher prevalence than girls in the 2 years analysed. Furthermore, a reduction in excess body weight was observed among girls in secondary education in the highest socioeconomic groups (28.7% [95% CI: 24.8-32.6%] in 2008 to 20.5% [95% CI: 17.1-23.8%] in 2012). CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of adolescents following food recommendations is low, and gender differences were found in terms of food consumption frequency, even in the context of financial crisis. There is a need to promote programmes and policies to reduce inequalities related to eating habits and excess body weight in adolescents.

OBJECTIVE: Childhood overweight and obesity have increased progressively in the last decades, especially in countries of Southern Europe. The aim of this study was to identify the prevalence of overweight, obesity and its determinants in schoolchildren between 8-9 years old from Barcelona. METHODS: Cross-sectional study of a representative sample of 3,262 schoolchildren in 2011. Body Mass Index (BMI) was calculated following the criteria established by the World Health Organization (z-scores). Variables on eating behaviour, physical activity and use of new technologies were studied through 2 questionnaires. Logistic regression models were adjusted, obtaining adjusted odds ratio and their confidence intervals (95%). RESULTS: The prevalence of overweight was 24.0% and 12.7% for obesity. Obesity was significantly higher in boys than in girls (14.8% vs 10.8%.). No statistically significant differences were observed in the compliance of recommendations of physical activity practice and use of new technologies according to BMI. Factors associated with obesity in boys were to attend a school located in a neighbourhood of disadvantaged socio-economic status [ORa=1.88 (1.35-2.63)], to belong to an immigrant family [ORa=1.57 (1.12-2.20)], to do not eat at school [ORa=1.76 (1.20-2.59)] and to have some meal alone [ORa=1.95 (1.27-3.00)]. In girls associated factors were to belong to a single-parent family [ORa=1.58 (1.06-2.34)] and to an immigrant family [ORa=1.53 (1.07-2.18)]. CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of childhood obesity in Barcelona is high. It is more common in boys, being the social determinants most relevant associated factors.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Vitamin D (vitD) is involved in the phosphor-calcium metabolism and bone pathology, but also in inflammatory and infectious processes such as tuberculosis. The present study evaluates the clinical and epidemiological aspects of active tuberculosis cases and latently infected contacts in whom plasma concentrations of vitD were obtained to determine whether the deficiency of vitD is a risk factor to develop active tuberculosis, especially the more severe forms. METHOD: Observational, retrospective study that included 86 tuberculosis patients and 80 contacts with latent infection in a 2-year period. RESULTS: When comparing active tuberculosis cases with latent infection contacts, deficiency of vitD (vitD levels <10 ng/mL, odds ratio [OR]: 2.02, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.04 to 3.93), male sex (OR: 1.9, 95% CI: 0.96 to 3.71) and non-white race (OR: 0.7, 95% CI: 0.34 to 1.42) were factors independently associated with the diagnosis of tuberculosis. CONCLUSION: Despite the limited number of subjects studied, there was a association between severe deficit of vitD and the presentation of tuberculosis.
