RESUMEN

Here, we present surface analysis and biocompatibility evaluation of novel composite material based on graphene oxide traded as Hastalex. First, the surface morphology and elemental analysis of the pristine material were examined by atomic force and scanning electron microscopies, and by energy-dispersive and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopies, respectively. The Hastalex surface was then modified by plasma (3 and 8 W with exposure times up to 240 s), the impact of which on the material surface wettability and morphology was further evaluated. In addition, the material aging was studied at room and elevated temperatures. Significant changes in surface roughness, morphology, and area were detected at the nanometer scale after plasma exposure. An increase in oxygen content due to the plasma exposure was observed both for 3 and 8 W. The plasma treatment had an outstanding effect on the cytocompatibility of Hastalex foil treated at both input powers of 3 and 8 W. The cell number of human MRC-5 fibroblasts on Hastalex foils exposed to plasma increased significantly compared to pristine Hastalex and even to tissue culture polystyrene. The plasma exposure also affected the fibroblasts' cell growth and shape.

RESUMEN

The properties of MXene flakes, a new class of two-dimensional materials, are strictly determined by their surface termination. The most common termination groups are oxygen-containing (=O or -OH) and fluorine (-F), and their relative ratio is closely related to flake stability and catalytic activity. The surface termination can vary significantly among MXene flakes depending on the preparation route and is commonly determined after flake preparation by using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). In this paper, as an alternative approach, we propose the combination of surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) and artificial neural networks (ANN) for the precise and reliable determination of MXene flakes' (Ti3C2Tx) surface chemistry. Ti3C2Tx flakes were independently prepared by three scientific groups and subsequently measured using three different Raman spectrometers, employing resonant excitation wavelengths. Manual analysis of the SERS spectra did not enable accurate determination of the flake surface termination. However, the combined SERS-ANN approach allowed us to determine the surface termination with a high accuracy. The reliability of the method was verified by using a series of independently prepared samples. We also paid special attention to how the results of the SERS-ANN method are affected by the flake stability and differences in the conditions of flake preparation and Raman measurements. This way, we have developed a universal technique that is independent of the above-mentioned parameters, providing the results with accuracy similar to XPS, but enhanced in terms of analysis time and simplicity.

RESUMEN

This study is focused on polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) porous nanotextile and its modification with thin, silver sputtered nanolayers, combined with a subsequent modification with an excimer laser. The KrF excimer laser was set to single-shot pulse mode. Subsequently, the physico chemical properties, morphology, surface chemistry, and wettability were determined. Minor effects of the excimer laser on the pristine PTFE substrate were described, but significant changes were observed after the application of the excimer laser to the polytetrafluoroethylene with sputtered silver, where the formation of a silver nanoparticles/PTFE/Ag composite was described, with a wettability similar to that of a superhydrophobic surface. Both scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy revealed the formation of superposed globular structures on the polytetrafluoroethylene lamellar primary structure, which was also confirmed using energy dispersive spectroscopy. The combined changes in the surface morphology, chemistry, and thus wettability induced a significant change in the PTFE's antibacterial properties. Samples coated with silver and further treated with the excimer laser 150 mJ/cm2 inhibited 100% of the bacterial strain E. coli. The motivation of this study was to find a material with flexible and elastic properties and a hydrophobic character, with antibacterial properties that could be enhanced with silver nanoparticles, but hydrophobic properties that would be maintained. These properties can be used in different types of applications, mainly in tissue engineering and the medicinal industry, where water-repellent materials may play important roles. This synergy was achieved via the technique we proposed, and even when the Ag nanostructures were prepared, the high hydrophobicity of the system Ag-polytetrafluorethylene was maintained.

RESUMEN

Among 2D materials, transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) of group 5 metals recently have attracted substantial interest due to their superior electrocatalytic activity toward hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). However, a straightforward and efficient synthesis of the TMDCs which can be easily scaled up is missing. Herein, we report an innovative, simple, and scalable method for tantalum disulfide (TaS2) synthesis, involving CS2 as a sulfurizing agent and Ta2O5 as a metal precursor. The structure of the created TaS2 flakes was analyzed by Raman, XRD, XPS, SEM, and HRTEM techniques. It was demonstrated that a tuning between 1T (metallic) and 3R (semiconductor) TaS2 phases can be accomplished by varying the reaction conditions. The created materials were tested for HER, and the electrocatalytic activity of both phases was significantly enhanced by electrochemical self-activation, up to that comparable with the Pt one. The final values of the Tafel slopes of activated TaS2 were found to be 35 and 43 mV/dec for 3R-TaS2 and 1T-TaS2, respectively, with the corresponding overpotentials of 63 and 109 mV required to reach a current density of 10 mA/cm2. We also investigated the mechanism of flake activation, which can be attributed to the changes in the flake morphology and surface chemistry. Our work provides a scalable and simple synthesis method to produce transition-metal sulfides which could replace the platinum catalyst in water splitting technology.

RESUMEN

Solely light-induced water splitting represents a promising avenue for a carbon-free energy future, based on reliable energy sources. Such processes can be performed using coupled semiconductor materials (the so-called direct Z-scheme design) that facilitate spatial separation of (photo)excited electrons and holes, prevent their recombination, and allow water-splitting half-reactions proceeding at each corresponding semiconductor side. In this work, we proposed and prepared a specific structure, based on WO3g-x/CdWO4/CdS coupled semiconductors, created by annealing of a common WO3/CdS direct Z-scheme. WO3-x/CdWO4/CdS flakes were further combined with a plasmon-active grating for the creation of the so-called artificial leaf design, making possible complete utilization of the sunlight spectrum. The proposed structure enables water splitting with high production of stoichiometric amounts of oxygen and hydrogen without undesirable catalyst photodegradation. Several control experiments confirm the creation of electrons and holes participating in the water splitting half-reaction in a spatially selective manner.

RESUMEN

A polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) composite with multi-walled carbon nanotubes was successfully prepared. Composite foils were treated with both plasma and excimer laser, and changes in their physicochemical properties were determined in detail. Mainly changes in surface chemistry, wettability, and morphology were determined. The plasma treatment of PDMS complemented with subsequent heating led to the formation of a unique wrinkle-like pattern. The impact of different laser treatment conditions on the composite surface was determined. The morphology was determined by AFM and LCM techniques, while chemical changes and chemical surface mapping were studied with the EDS/EDX method. Selected activated polymer composites were used for the evaluation of antibacterial activity using Gram-positive (Staphylococcus epidermidis) and Gram-negative (Escherichia coli) bacteria. The antibacterial effect was achieved against S. epidermidis on pristine PDMS treated with 500 mJ of laser energy and PDMS-C nanocomposite treated with a lower laser fluence of 250 mJ. Silver deposition of PDMS foil increases significantly its antibacterial properties against E. coli, which is further enhanced by the carbon predeposition or high-energy laser treatment.

RESUMEN

The main aim of this study was to describe the treatment of carbon sheet with a high-energy excimer laser. The excimer modification changed the surface chemistry and morphology of carbon. The appearance of specific carbon forms and modifications have been detected due to exposure to laser beam fluencies up to 8 J cm-2. High fluence optics was used for dramatic changes in the carbon layer with the possibility of Q-carbon formation; a specific amorphous carbon phase was detected with Raman spectroscopy. The changes in morphology were determined with atomic force microscopy and confirmed with scanning electron microscopy, where the partial formation of the Q-carbon phase was detected. Energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) was applied for a detailed study of surface chemistry. The particular shift of functional groups induced on laser-treated areas was determined by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. For the first time, high-dose laser exposure successfully induced a specific amorphous carbon phase.

RESUMEN

The reaction of potassium ferrate(VI), K(2)FeO(4), with weak-acid dissociable cyanides--namely, K(2)[Zn(CN)(4)], K(2)[Cd(CN)(4)], K(2)[Ni(CN)(4)], and K(3)[Cu(CN)(4)]--results in the formation of iron(III) oxyhydroxide nanoparticles that differ in size, crystal structure, and surface area. During cyanide oxidation and the simultaneous reduction of iron(VI), zinc(II), copper(II), and cadmium(II), metallic ions are almost completely removed from solution due to their coprecipitation with the iron(III) oxyhydroxides including 2-line ferrihydrite, 7-line ferrihydrite, and/or goethite. Based on the results of XRD, Mössbauer and IR spectroscopies, as well as TEM, X-ray photoelectron emission spectroscopy, and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller measurements, we suggest three scavenging mechanisms for the removal of metals including their incorporation into the ferrihydrite crystal structure, the formation of a separate phase, and their adsorption onto the precipitate surface. Zn and Cu are preferentially and almost completely incorporated into the crystal structure of the iron(III) oxyhydroxides; the formation of the Cd-bearing, X-ray amorphous phase, together with Cd carbonate is the principal mechanism of Cd removal. Interestingly, Ni remains predominantly in solution due to the key role of nickel(II) carbonate, which exhibits a solubility product constant several orders of magnitude higher than the carbonates of the other metals. Traces of Ni, identified in the iron(III) precipitate, are exclusively adsorbed onto the large surface area of nanoparticles. We discuss the relationship between the crystal structure of iron(III) oxyhydroxides and the mechanism of metal removal, as well as the linear relationship observed between the rate constant and the surface area of precipitates.

RESUMEN

This article is focused on the evaluation of surface properties of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) nanotextile and a tetrafluoroethylene-perfluoro(alkoxy vinyl ether) (PFA) film and their surface activation with argon plasma treatment followed with silver nanoclusters deposition. Samples were subjected to plasma modification for a different time exposure, silver deposition for different time periods, or their combination. As an alternative approach, the foils were coated with poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) and silver. The following methods were used to study the surface properties of the polymers: goniometry, atomic force microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron microscopy. By combining the aforementioned methods for material surface modification, substrates with antibacterial properties eliminating the growth of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria were prepared. Studies of antimicrobial activity showed that PTFE plasma-modified samples coated with PLLA and deposited with a thin layer of Ag had a strong antimicrobial effect, which was also observed for the PFA material against the bacterial strain of S. aureus. Significant antibacterial effect against S. aureus, Proteus sp. and E. coli has been demonstrated on PTFE nanotextile plasma-treated for 240 s, coated with PLLA, and subsequently sputtered with thin Ag layer.

RESUMEN

The efficient utilization of solar energy is the actual task of the present and near future. Thus, the preparation of appropriate materials that are able to harvest and utilize the broad wavelength range of solar light (especially commonly ignored near-infrared light region-NIR) is the high-priority challenging mission. Our study provides a rationally designed two-dimensional (2D) flexible heterostructures with photocatalytic activity for the production of "clean" hydrogen under NIR illumination, with the hydrogen production rate exceeding most 2D materials and the ability to use the seawater as a starting material. The proposed design utilizes the hybrid bimetallic (Au/Pt) periodic structure, which is further covalently grafted with a metal-organic framework MIL-101(Cr). The periodic gold structure is able to efficiently support the plasmon-polariton wave and to excite the hot electrons, which is further injected in the Pt and MIL-101(Cr) layers. The Pt and MIL-101(Cr) structures provide catalytic sites, which are saturated with hot electrons and efficiently initiate water splitting and hydrogen production. The MIL-101(Cr) layer also serves for repelling generated hydrogen bubbles. The mechanistic studies reveal the catalytic role of every element of the 2D flexible heterostructures. The maximum hydrogen output was achieved under plasmon resonance excitation in the NIR range, and it could be actively controlled by the applied LED wavelength.

RESUMEN

We investigated the use of a supported silicalite-1 film (SF) as a promising coating for metallic materials used in the fabrication of prostheses. The role of carbonaceous residua present on high-temperature calcined-SF in generating singlet oxygen for future use as a sterilization method has also been addressed, and the potential genotoxicity of these residua in osteoblast-like cells has been investigated. Calcination of as-synthesized SF induced the appearance of a rather complicated mixture of aliphatic and aromatic species on its outer surface. A series of variously volatile polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), including naphthalene, fluorene, phenanthrene, anthracene, fluoranthene, and pyrene, were identified in micromole concentrations. Irradiation of these PAHs on calcined-SF immersed in air-saturated chloroform led to the formation of very low concentrations of singlet oxygen. However, an increased level of DNA damage was observed on calcined-SF by immunofluorescence staining of phosphorylated histone H2AX analyzed by flow cytometry.

RESUMEN

In this work, we demonstrate and describe an effective method of protecting zirconium fuel cladding against oxygen and hydrogen uptake at both accident and working temperatures in water-cooled nuclear reactor environments. Zr alloy samples were coated with nanocrystalline diamond (NCD) layers of different thicknesses, grown in a microwave plasma chemical vapor deposition apparatus. In addition to showing that such an NCD layer prevents the Zr alloy from directly interacting with water, we show that carbon released from the NCD film enters the underlying Zr material and changes its properties, such that uptake of oxygen and hydrogen is significantly decreased. After 100-170 days of exposure to hot water at 360 °C, the oxidation of the NCD-coated Zr plates was typically decreased by 40%. Protective NCD layers may prolong the lifetime of nuclear cladding and consequently enhance nuclear fuel burnup. NCD may also serve as a passive element for nuclear safety. NCD-coated ZIRLO claddings have been selected as a candidate for Accident Tolerant Fuel in commercially operated reactors in 2020.
