RESUMEN

Pyogenic granuloma, or granuloma pyogenicum, is a common, tumor-like growth of the oral cavity or skin that is considered to be an exaggerated, localized connective tissue reaction to a minor injury or irritation. A total of five clinical cases of oral pyogenic granuloma were randomly selected in the age group between 26 and 41 years. All these cases were treated with sodium tetra decyl sulphate and examined for regression and reccurrence of the lesion for six months. Various treatment modalities consist of conservative surgical excision, cryosurgery, laser surgery and sclerotherapy. Sclerotherapy with sodium tetra decyl sulphate is a relatively simple and effective method for treating oral pyogenic granuloma.

Background: The complex root canal anatomy of primary root canals is considered to be most challenging. The quality of the root canal preparation plays a significant role in the success of endodontic treatment. Now, there are very few root canal instruments that are capable of cleaning the canal three dimensionally. To evaluate the efficacy of root canal instruments, various technologies have been used; one of the most reliable strategies was cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). Aim: The aim of this study is to compare the centralization ability and canal transportation of three commercially available pediatric rotary file systems using CBCT analysis. Materials and Methods: Thirty-three extracted human primary teeth with a minimum 7 mm root length were randomly divided into three groups (group I - Kedo-SG Blue, group II - Kedo-S Square, and group III - Pro AF Baby Gold). Biomechanical preparation was done according to the manufacturers instructions. Pre- and postinstrumentation CBCT images were taken for each group to evaluate the remaining dentin thickness thereby assessing the centering ability and the canal transportation ability of different file systems. Results: Significant difference was noticed in canal transportation and centering ability between the three tested groups. Mesiodistal canal transportation was significant at all three levels, whereas buccolingual canal transportation was significant only at the apical third of the root. However, Kedo-SG Blue and Pro AF Baby Gold showed lesser canal transportation compared to Kedo-S Square rotary file system. Mesiodistal centering ability was significant at cervical and apical thirds of the root with Kedo-S Square rotary file system maintaining less canal centricity. Conclusions: All three file systems tested in the study were effective in removing the radicular dentin. However, Kedo-SG Blue and Pro AF Baby Gold rotary file systems showed comparatively less canal transportation and more centering ability than Kedo-S Square rotary file system.

RESUMEN

Amelogenesis Imperfecta (AI) is a hereditary enamel defect which is characterized by developmental abnormalities in the quantity and/ or quality of enamel. This condition has been associated with dental anomalies, including taurodontism, congenitally missing teeth, delayed eruption, crown resorption, pulpal calcifications and odontogenic fibromas. This paper presents two cases of AI which were associated with multiple impacted permanent teeth in both the cases; and pulpal calcifications and pericoronal odontogenic fibromas of W.H.O type additionally, in one of the cases.

BACKGROUND: There is a need for development and use of diagnostic aids that help the dental specialist more readily identify and assess Potentially Malignant Epithelial Lesions (PMELs) and Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma (OSCC). This study was done to assess the value of two such commercially available tools: chemiluminescent light kit or ViziLite and 1% toluidine blue. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: a) To detect epithelial dysplastic changes using chemiluminescene (commercially available as ViziLite) and toluidine blue staining in PMELs and OSCC patients and compare the results obtained with histopathological examination. b) To determine whether these techniques can be used to detect early epithelial dysplastic changes in clinically normal appearing oral mucosa of high risk (with habits) patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 60 patients- 25 patients with PMELs, specifically oral leukoplakia, 10 patients with clinically diagnosed OSCC and 25 high risk patients with no clinically visible lesion, were screened with ViziLite and toluidine blue staining; followed by incisional biopsy. RESULTS: Sensitivity and specificity of ViziLite were calculated to be 95.45% and 84.6% respectively. ViziLite detected early epithelial dysplastic changes in one high risk patient with clinically normal appearing oral mucosa. Sensitivity and specificity of toluidine blue were calculated to be 86.36% and 76.9% respectively. CONCLUSION: ViziLite was relatively reliable in screening PMELs compared to toluidine blue, and was a useful chair side diagnostic aid.

CONTEXT: Antimicrobial efficacy of subgingival chlorhexidine (CHX) application using two different vehicles of delivery. AIMS: The aim was to evaluate the efficacy of CHX varnish and gel as an adjunct to scaling and root planing (SRP) in reducing microbial count within moderate to deep periodontal pockets. SETTINGS AND DESIGN: Experimental parallel mouth study. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: A total of 30 subjects between the age groups 25 and 55 years having moderate to severe periodontitis, with pocket depth ≥ 5 mm were selected for the study. The selected patients were randomized into three groups of 10 each. Subjects in Group 1 received SRP followed by subgingival application of CHX varnish, subjects in Group 2 received SRP followed by subgingival application of CHX gel, subjects in Group 3 received SRP alone. Subgingival plaque samples were collected to estimate mean motile and nonmotile microbial counts using dark field microscopy at baseline, 1 week, 1 month, and 3 months. RESULTS: After 3 months, there was statistically significant reduction in nonmotile microbial count in all the three groups. Motile microbial count was significantly reduced in all the three groups till 1 month from baseline. Only subjects in Group 1 who received subgingival CHXvarnish after SRP showed a significant reduction in motile microbial count till 3 months from baseline. CONCLUSIONS: Subgingival application of highly concentrated CHX varnish following SRP is beneficial in reducing microbial count in moderate to deep periodontal pockets.

RESUMEN

Crouzon syndrome is an autosomal dominant condition of the craniosynostotic syndromes without syndactyly and with various dentofacial anomalies. Craniosynostosis, maxillary hypoplasia, shallow orbits, ocular proptosis and hypertelorism are the characteristic features of Crouzon syndrome. This report describes the variable clinical features in affected individuals over two generations of a family with dentofacial deformities and review of literature.
