RESUMEN

The non-covalent functionalization of black phosphorus (BP) was studied with a scope of ten tailor-made perylene diimides (PDIs). A combination of UV/Vis-, fluorescence-, as well as Raman spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy was used to investigate the structural factors, which contribute to a pronounced PDI-BP interaction and thus support the protection of BP nanosheets against oxidative degradation. We were able to show, that water-soluble, amphiphilic PDIs with highly charged head groups can be used for the non-covalent functionalization of BP in aqueous media. Here, based on the hydrophobic effect, an efficient adsorption of the respective PDI molecules takes place and leads to the formation of a passivating film, yielding a considerable stabilization of the BP flakes under ambient conditions exceeding 30 days.

The integration of first- (1G) and second-generation (2G) ethanol production by adding sugarcane juice or molasses to lignocellulosic hydrolysates offers the possibility to overcome the problem of inhibitors (acetic acid, furfural, hydroxymethylfurfural and phenolic compounds), and add nutrients (such as salts, sugars and nitrogen sources) to the fermentation medium, allowing the production of higher ethanol titers. In this work, an 1G2G production process was developed with hemicellulosic hydrolysate (HH) from a diluted sulfuric acid pretreatment of sugarcane bagasse and sugarcane molasses. The industrial Saccharomyces cerevisiae CAT-1 was genetically modified for xylose consumption and used for co-fermentation of sucrose, fructose, glucose, and xylose. The fed-batch fermentation with high cell density that mimics an industrial fermentation was performed at bench scale fermenter, achieved high volumetric ethanol productivity of 1.59 g L-1 h-1, 0.39 g g-1 of ethanol yield, and 44.5 g L-1 ethanol titer, and shown that the yeast was able to consume all the sugars present in must simultaneously. With the results, it was possible to establish a mass balance for the global process: from pretreatment to the co-fermentation of molasses and HH, and it was possible to establish an effective integrated process (1G2G) with sugarcane molasses and HH co-fermentation employing a recombinant yeast.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Quantifying stroke incidence and mortality is crucial for disease surveillance and health system planning. Administrative data offer a cost-effective alternative to "gold standard" population-based studies. However, the optimal methodology for establishing stroke deaths from administrative data remains unclear. We aimed to determine the optimal method for identifying stroke-related deaths in administrative datasets as the fatal component of stroke incidence, comparing counts derived using underlying and all causes of death (CoD). METHOD: Using whole-population multijurisdictional person-level linked data from hospital and death datasets from South Australia, the Northern Territory, and Western Australia, we identified first-ever stroke events between 2012 and 2015, using underlying CoD and all CoD to identify fatal stroke counts. We determined the 28-day case fatality for both counts and compared results with gold standard Australian population-based stroke incidence studies. RESULTS: The total number of incident stroke events was 16,150 using underlying CoD and 18,074 using all CoD. Case fatality was 24.7% and 32.7% using underlying and all CoD, respectively. Case fatality using underlying CoD was similar to that observed in four Australian "gold standard" population-based studies (20%-24%). CONCLUSIONS: Underlying CoD generates fatal incident stroke estimates more consistent with population-based studies than estimates based on stroke deaths identified from all-cause fields in death registers.

Molecular catalysts offer a unique opportunity to implement different chemical functionalities to steer the efficiency and selectivity for the CO2 reduction for instance. Metalloporphyrins and metallophthalocyanines are under high scrutiny since their most classic derivatives the tetraphenylporphyrin (TPP) and parent phthalocyanine (Pc), have been used as the molecular platform to install, hydrogen bonds donnors, proton relays, cationic fragments, incorporation in MOFs and COFs, to enhance the catalytic power of these catalysts. Herein, we examine the electrocatalytic properties of the tetramethyl cobalt (II) tetrapyridinoporphyrazine (CoTmTPyPz) for the reduction of CO2 in heterogeneous medium when adsorbed on carbon nanotubes (CNT) at a carbon paper (CP) electrode. Unlike reported electrocatalysis with cobalt based phthalocyanine where CO was advocated as the two electron and two protons reduced intermediate on the way to the formation of methanol, we found here that CoTmTPyPz does not reduce CO to methanol. Henceforth, ruling out a mechanistic pathway where CO is a reaction intermediate.

BACKGROUND: Most estimates of stroke incidence among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (hereinafter Aboriginal) Australians are confined to single regions and include small sample sizes. We aimed to measure and compare stroke incidence in Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal residents across central and western Australia. METHODS: Whole-population multijurisdictional person-linked data from hospital and death datasets were used to identify stroke admissions and stroke-related deaths (2001-2015) in Western Australia, South Australia, and the Northern Territory. Fatal (including out-of-hospital deaths) and nonfatal incident (first-ever) strokes in patients aged 20-84 years were identified during the 4-year study period (2012-2015), using a 10-year lookback period to exclude people with prior stroke. Incidence rates per 100 000 population/year were estimated for Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal populations, age-standardized to the World Health Organization World Standard population. RESULTS: In a population of 3 223 711 people (3.7% Aboriginal), 11 740 incident (first-ever) strokes (20.6% regional/remote location of residence; 15.6% fatal) were identified from 2012 to 2015, 675 (5.7%) in Aboriginal people (73.6% regional/remote; 17.0% fatal). Median age of Aboriginal cases (54.5 years; 50.1% female) was 16 years younger than non-Aboriginal cases (70.3 years; 44.1% female; P<0.001), with significantly greater prevalence of comorbidities. Age-standardized stroke incidence in Aboriginal people (192/100 000 [95% CI, 177-208]) was 2.9-fold greater than in non-Aboriginal people (66/100 000 [95% CI, 65-68]) aged 20-84 years; fatal incidence was 4.2-fold greater (38/100 000 [95% CI, 31-46] versus 9/100 000 [95% CI, 9-10]). Disparities were particularly apparent at younger ages (20-54 years), where age-standardized stroke incidence was 4.3-fold greater in Aboriginal people (90/100 000 [95% CI, 81-100]) than non-Aboriginal people (21/100 000 [95% CI, 20-22]). CONCLUSIONS: Stroke occurred more commonly, and at younger ages, in Aboriginal than non-Aboriginal populations. Greater prevalence of baseline comorbidities was present in the younger Aboriginal population. Improved primary prevention is required. To optimize stroke prevention, interventions should include culturally appropriate community-based health promotion and integrated support for nonmetropolitan health services.

BACKGROUND: Elevated pre-treatment baseline inflammation has been associated with cancer therapy-related cardiac dysfunction (CTRCD) in patients with breast cancer. Monocyte-to-lymphocyte ratio (MLR), neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio and systemic immune-inflammation index (NLR × platelets) have emerged in clinical context as markers of disease-related inflammation. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate development of CTRCD according to pre-treatment blood inflammatory biomarkers in patients with breast cancer. METHODS: Pilot cohort study including consecutive female patients ≥ 18 years with HER2-positive early breast cancer who consulted at the institution's breast oncology outpatient clinic between march/2019 and march/2022. CTRCD: absolute reduction in LVEF > 10% to below 53% (2D-echocardiogram). Survival analysis was performed using Kaplan-Meier curves, compared by the log-rank test, and discrimination ability was evaluated through AUC-ROC. RESULTS: Forty-nine patients (53.3 ± 13.3 y) were included and followed-up for a median of 13.2 months. CTRCD was observed in 6 (12.2%) patients. Patients with high blood inflammatory biomarkers had lower CTRCD-free survival (P < 0.050 for all). MLR showed statistically significant AUC (0.802; P = 0.017). CTRCD was observed in 27.8% of patients with high MLR versus 3.2% with low MLR (P = 0.020); negative predictive value was 96.8% (95%CI 83.3-99.4%). CONCLUSION: In patients with breast cancer, elevated pre-treatment inflammatory markers were associated with increased risk of cardiotoxicity. Among these markers, MLR had good discriminatory performance and high negative predictive value. The incorporation of MLR might improve risk evaluation and selection of patients for follow-up during cancer therapy.

Metallo-phthalocyanines (MPc) are common photosensitizers with ideal photophysical and photochemical properties. Also, these molecules have shown to interact with non-canonical nucleic acid structures, such as G-quadruplexes, and modulate oncogenic expression in cancer cells. Herein, we report the synthesis and characterisation of two metallo-phthalocyanines containing either zinc (ZnPc) or nickel (NiPc) in the central aromatic core and four alkyl ammonium lateral chains. The interaction of both molecules with G-quadruplex DNA was assessed by UV-Vis, fluorescence and FRET melting experiments. Both molecules bind strongly to G-quadruplexes and stabilise these structures, being NiPc the most notable G-quadruplex stabiliser. In addition, the photosensitizing ability of both metal complexes was explored by the evaluation of the singlet oxygen generation and their photoactivation in cells. Only ZnPc showed a high singlet oxygen generation either by direct observation or by indirect evaluation using a DPBF dye. The cellular evaluation showed mainly cytoplasmic localization of ZnPc and a decrease of the IC50 values of the cell viability of ZnPc upon light activation of two orders of magnitude. Two metallo-phthalocyanines containing zinc and nickel within the aromatic core have been investigated as G-quadruplex stabilizers and photosensitizers. NiPc shows a high G4 binding but negligible photosensitizing ability while ZnPc exhibits a moderate binding to G-quadruplex together with a high potency to generate singlet oxygen and photocytotoxicity. The interaction with G4s and capacity to be photosensitized is associated with the geometry adopted by the central metal core of the phthalocyanine scaffold.

Two wide-band-capturing donor-acceptor conjugates featuring bis-styrylBODIPY and perylenediimide (PDI) have been newly synthesized, and the occurrence of ultrafast excitation transfer from the 1 PDI* to BODIPY, and a subsequent electron transfer from the 1 BODIPY* to PDI have been demonstrated. Optical absorption studies revealed panchromatic light capture but offered no evidence of ground-state interactions between the donor and acceptor entities. Steady-state fluorescence and excitation spectral recordings provided evidence of singlet-singlet energy transfer in these dyads, and quenched fluorescence of bis-styrylBODIPY emission in the dyads suggested additional photo-events. The facile oxidation of bis-styrylBODIPY and facile reduction of PDI, establishing their relative roles of electron donor and acceptor, were borne out by electrochemical studies. The electrostatic potential surfaces of the S1 and S2 states, derived from time-dependent DFT calculations, supported excited charge transfer in these dyads. Spectro-electrochemical studies on one-electron-oxidized and one-electron-reduced dyads and the monomeric precursor compounds were also performed in a thin-layer optical cell under corresponding applied potentials. From this study, both bis-styrylBODIPY⋅+ and PDI⋅- could be spectrally characterizes and were subsequently used in characterizing the electron-transfer products. Finally, pump-probe spectral studies were performed in dichlorobenzene under selective PDI and bis-styrylBODIPY excitation to secure energy and electron-transfer evidence. The measured rate constants for energy transfer, kENT , were in the range of 1011  s-1 , while the electron transfer rate constants, kET , were in the range of 1010  s-1 , thus highlighting their potential use in solar energy harvesting and optoelectronic applications.

BACKGROUND: Radiologically isolated syndrome (RIS) patients might have psychiatric and cognitive deficits, which suggests an involvement of major resting-state functional networks. Notwithstanding, very little is known about the neural networks involved in RIS. OBJECTIVE: To examine functional connectivity differences between RIS and healthy controls using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). METHODS: Resting-state fMRI data in 25 RIS patients and 28 healthy controls were analyzed using an independent component analysis; in addition, seed-based correlation analysis was used to obtain more information about specific differences in the functional connectivity of resting-state networks. Participants also underwent neuropsychological testing. RESULTS: RIS patients did not differ from the healthy controls regarding age, sex, and years of education. However, in memory (verbal and visuospatial) and executive functions, RIS patients' cognitive performance was significantly worse than the healthy controls. In addition, fluid intelligence was also affected. Twelve out of 25 (48%) RIS patients failed at least one cognitive test, and six (24.0%) had cognitive impairment. Compared to healthy controls, RIS patients showed higher functional connectivity between the default mode network and the right middle and superior frontal gyri and between the central executive network and the right thalamus (pFDR < 0.05; corrected). In addition, the seed-based correlation analysis revealed that RIS patients presented higher functional connectivity between the posterior cingulate cortex, an important hub in neural networks, and the right precuneus. CONCLUSION: RIS patients had abnormal brain connectivity in major resting-state neural networks and worse performance in neurocognitive tests. This entity should be considered not an "incidental finding" but an exclusively non-motor (neurocognitive) variant of multiple sclerosis.

The synthesis and characterization of diketopyrrolopyrroles and perylenemonoimidodiesters linked to a substituted benzoic acid in the ortho, meta, and para positions, are reported. Grafting of these dyes on the surface of chiral silica nanohelices is used to probe how the morphology of the platform at the mesoscopic level affects the induction of chiroptical properties onto achiral molecular chromophores. The grafted structures are weakly (diketopyrrolopyrroles) or strongly (perylenemonoimidodiesters) emissive, exhibiting both locally-excited state emission and a broad, structureless emission assigned to excimers. The dissymmetry factors obtained using circular dichroism highlight optimized supramolecular organization between the chromophores for enhancing the chiroptical properties of the system. In the ortho- derivatives, poor organization due to steric hindrance is reflected in a low density of chromophores on walls of the silica-nanostructures (<0.1 vs. >0.3 and up to 0.6 molecules/nm2 for the ortho and meta or para derivatives, respectively) and lower gabs values than in the other derivatives (gabs <2×10-5 vs 6×10-5 for the ortho and para derivatives, respectively). The para derivatives presented a better organization and increased values of gabs . All grafted chromophores evidence varying degrees of excimer emission which was not found to directly correlate to their grafting density.

Organic chromophores and semiconductors, like anthracene, pentacene, perylene, and porphyrin, are prone to aggregation, and their packing in the solid state is often hard to predict and difficult to control. As the condensed phase structures of these chromophores and semiconductors are of crucial importance for their optoelectronic functionality, strategies to control their assembly and provide new structural motifs are important. One such approach uses metal-organic frameworks (MOFs); the organic chromophore is converted into a linker and connected by metal ions or nodes. The spatial arrangement of the organic linkers can be well-defined in a MOF, and hence optoelectronic functions can be adjusted accordingly. We have used such a strategy to assemble a phthalocyanine chromophore and illustrated that the electronic inter-phthalocyanine coupling can be rationally tuned by introducing bulky side grounds to increase steric hindrance. We have designed new phthalocyanine linkers and using a layer-by-layer liquid-phase epitaxy strategy thin films of phthalocyanine-based MOFs have been fabricated and their photophysical properties explored. It was found that increasing the steric hindrance around the phthalocyanine reduced the effect of J-aggregation in the thin film structures.

A series of pyrazinepyrene-fused zinc phthalocyanines (ZnPc-Pyrn) have been newly synthesized by reacting quinoxaline and the corresponding diamino-functionalized phthalocyanines as a new class of π-extended phthalocyanine systems. Bathochromically shifted absorption as a function of the number of pyrazinepyrene entities due to extended π-conjugation and quenched fluorescence due to the presence of fused pyrazinepyrene were witnessed. The electronic structures of these phthalocyanines were probed by systematic computational and electrochemical studies, while the excited-state properties were examined by pump-probe spectroscopies operating at the femto- and nanosecond time scales. Similar to the excited singlet lifetimes, the excited triplet states also revealed diminished lifetimes with an increased number of pyrazinepyrene entities. Further, the coordinatively unsaturated zinc in these molecules was coordinated with phenyl imidazole-functionalized fullerene, ImC60, to form a new series of donor-acceptor conjugates. Upon full characterization of these conjugates, the occurrence of excited-state charge separation was established by transient pump-probe spectroscopy, covering wide temporal and spatial regions. The lifetime of the final charge-separated states was ∼2 ns and decreased with an increase in the number of fused pyrazinepyrene units.

Perylenediimide (PDI) compounds are widely used as the active units of thin-film organic lasers. Lately, PDIs bearing two sterically hindering diphenylphenoxy groups at the 1,7-bay positions have received attention because they provide a way to red-shift the emission with respect to bay-unsubstituted PDIs, while maintaining a good amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) performance at high doping rates. Here, we report the synthesis of a series of six PDI derivatives with different aryloxy groups (PDI 6 to PDI 10) or ethoxy groups (PDI 11) at the 1,7 positions of the PDI core, together with a complete characterization of their optical properties, including absorption, photoluminescence, and ASE. We aim to stablish structure-property relationships that help designing compounds with optimized ASE performance. Film experiments were accomplished at low PDI concentrations in the film, to resemble the isolated molecule behaviour, and at a range of increasing doping rates, to investigate concentration quenching effects. Compounds PDI 10 and PDI 7, bearing substituents in the 2' positions of the benzene ring (the one contiguous to the linking oxygen atom) attached to the 1,7 positions of the PDI core, have shown a better threshold performance, which is attributed to conformational (steric) effects. Films containing PDI 11 show dual ASE.

Graphene doped with heteroatoms such as nitrogen, boron, and phosphorous by replacing some of the skeletal carbon atoms is emerging as an important class of two-dimensional materials as it offers the much-needed bandgap for optoelectronic applications and provides better access for chemical functionalization at the heteroatom sites. Covalent grafting of photosensitizers onto such doped graphenes makes them extremely useful for light-induced applications. Herein, we report the covalent functionalization of N-doped graphene (NG) with two well-known electron donor photosensitizers, namely, zinc porphyrin (ZnP) and zinc phthalocyanine (ZnPc), using the simple click chemistry approach. Covalent attachment of ZnP and ZnPc at the N-sites of NG in NG-ZnP and NG-ZnPc hybrids was confirmed by using a range of spectroscopic, thermogravimetric and imaging techniques. Ground- and excited-state interactions in NG-ZnP and NG-ZnPc were monitored by using spectral and electrochemical techniques. Efficient quenching of photosensitizer fluorescence in these hybrids was observed, and the relatively easier oxidations of ZnP and ZnPc supported excited-state charge-separation events. Photoinduced charge separation in NG-ZnP and NG-ZnPc hybrids was confirmed by using the ultrafast pump-probe technique. The measured rate constants were of the order of 1010  s,-1 thus indicating ultrafast electron transfer phenomena.

INTRODUCTION: Culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities are growing globally. Understanding patterns of cerebrovascular disease in CALD communities may improve health outcomes through culturally specific interventions. We compared rates of transient ischaemic attack (TIA)/stroke (ischaemic stroke, intracerebral haemorrhage) and stroke risk factor prevalence in overseas and Australian-born people in South Western Sydney (SWS) and New South Wales (NSW). METHODS: This was a 10-year retrospective analysis (2011-2020) of SWS and NSW age-standardized rates per 100,000 person-years of TIA/stroke. Data were extracted from Health Information Exchange and Secure Analytics for Population Health Research and Intelligence systems. Rates of hypertension, type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), atrial fibrillation (AF), smoking, and obesity were also calculated. RESULTS: The SWS and NSW age-standardized rate of TIA/stroke for people born in Australia was 100 per 100,000 person-years (100/100,000/year). In SWS, 56.6% of people were overseas-born compared to 29.8% for NSW. The age-standardized rate of TIA/stroke for Polynesian-born people was more than double that of Australian-born people (p < 0.001). Hypertension (33 [SWS] vs. 27/100,000/year [NSW]) and T2DM (36 [SWS] vs. 26/100,000/year [NSW]) were the most common risk factors with rates >50/100,000/year (hypertension) and >80/100,000/year (T2DM) for people born in Polynesia, Melanesia, and Central America. Rates of T2DM, AF, and obesity for Polynesian-born people were over threefold greater than people born in Australia. DISCUSSION/CONCLUSION: Greater rates of TIA/stroke were observed in specific CALD communities, with increased rates of cerebrovascular risk factors. Culturally specific, targeted interventions may bridge health inequalities in cerebrovascular disease.

BACKGROUND: The current study sought to explore whether cancer pain (CP) already exists in patients at colorectal cancer (CRC) diagnosis before treatment compared with patients with colorectal cancer (CRC) after treatment and a healthy matched control group. The study also sought to examine whether factors related to physical health status could enhance pain processes. METHODS: An observational cross-sectional study was conducted following the STROBE checklist. Twenty-nine newly diagnosed and forty post-treatment patients with CRC and 40 healthy age/sex-matched controls were included for comparison. Pain, local muscle function, and body composition outcomes were assessed by a physiotherapist with > 3 years of experience. ANCOVA and Kruskal-Wallis tests were performed, with Bonferroni and Dunn-Bonferroni post hoc analyses and Cohen's d and Hedge's effect size, as appropriate. RESULTS: The analysis detected lower values of pressure pain threshold (PPT) points, the PPT index, and abdominal strength and higher values of self-reported abdominal pain in newly diagnosed patients, with even more marked results observed in the post-treatment patients, where lower lean mass and skeletal muscle index values were also found than those in the healthy matched controls (p < 0.05). In the post-treatment and healthy matched control groups, positive associations were observed between the PPT lumbar dominant side points and abdominal isometric strength and lean mass, and negative associations were observed between the lumbar dominant side points and body fat (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Upon diagnosis, patients with CRC already show signs of hyperalgesia and central sensitization and deteriorated physical conditions and body composition, and this state could be aggravated by subsequent treatments.

OBJECTIVE: This systematic review analyzed the effects of physical exercise programs in patients with cancer undergoing chemotherapy on chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) prevention. DATA SOURCES: PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and Cochrane Library were searched for relevant studies published before December 2020. Additional references were identified by manual screening of the reference lists. STUDY SELECTION: Based on the Population, Intervention, Comparator, Outcomes, and Study Designs strategy, randomized controlled trials in which physical exercise was applied before or during chemotherapy to prevent or ameliorate CIPN were included. DATA EXTRACTION: Two reviewers blinded and independent screened the articles, scored methodologic quality, and extracted data for analysis. The review was conducted and reported according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses statement. Sensitivity and precision analysis databases was included. Risk of bias assessment and meta-analysis were conducted using the Cochrane tools. DATA SYNTHESIS: Of 229 potentially relevant studies, 8 randomized controlled trials were included and scored. They comprise a total of 618 patients with cancer. MEDLINE and Scopus databases recorded the highest sensitivity. None of the studies achieved a "low" overall risk of bias. Four studies were included in meta-analysis for quality of life, and a significance standardized mean difference was found between groups from baseline of 14.62; 95% CI, 6.03-3.20, with a large effect size g=0.83; 95% CI, 0.48-1.18) in favor of physical exercise program compared with usual care. CONCLUSIONS: Physical exercise at the onset of chemotherapy has shown promising effects on the prevention of CIPN, specially improving quality of life.

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular disease is the most common cause of death and disability in indigenous communities but limited prospective data exist about stroke. AIMS: To estimate the difference in stroke recognition, risk factors, treatment rates and outcomes between indigenous and non-indigenous peoples admitted to the Wagga Wagga Rural Referral Hospital (WWRRH) over a 5-year period with a suspected acute stroke. METHODS: All suspected strokes presenting to the 33 peripheral hospitals within the Murrumbidgee Local Health District (MLHD) were transferred to the WWRRH and prospectively assessed over a 5-year period from 1 January 2012 to 31 December 2017. Actions at stroke onset, risks factors, stroke type, treatment and outcomes were analysed. RESULTS: A total of 1843 patients were included. Of these, 45 (2.5%) patients were indigenous. Only 26.6% of indigenous and 34% of non-indigenous patients knew of the face, arm, speech, time (FAST) acronym. Indigenous patients were younger (mean age 62.0 years vs 74.4 years) and more likely to have diabetes (risk difference (RD) 22.3% (95% CI: 3%, 41.7%)), dyslipidaemia (RD 19.4% (95% CI: 21.%, 36.7%)), and be ever smokers (RD 24.9% (95% CI: 9.5%, 40.3%)). Stroke types were similar except lacunar infarcts were more common (19.2% vs 8.4%). Treatment rates and outcomes were similar between the two groups. CONCLUSIONS: Indigenous Australians with stroke are a decade younger and have a higher prevalence of important, modifiable stroke-risk factors. Delayed presentation to hospital is more common, due in part to stroke symptoms being underrecognised. When admitted to a specialised stroke unit, treatment rates and outcomes are comparable.

Despite the importance of cognitive function in multiple sclerosis, it is poorly represented in the Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS), the commonly used clinical measure to assess disability, suggesting that an analysis of eye movement, which is generated by an extensive and well-coordinated functional network that is engaged in cognitive function, could have the potential to extend and complement this more conventional measure. We aimed to measure the eye movement of a case series of MS patients with relapsing−remitting MS to assess their cognitive status using a conventional gaze tracker. A total of 41 relapsing−remitting MS patients and 43 age-matched healthy controls were recruited for this study. Overall, we could not find a clear common pattern in the eye motor abnormalities. Vertical eye movement was more impaired in MS patients than horizontal movement. Increased latencies were found in the prosaccades and reflexive saccades of antisaccade tests. The smooth pursuit was impaired with more corrections (backup and catchup movements, p<0.01). No correlation was found between eye movement variables and EDSS or disease duration. Despite significant alterations in the behavior of the eye movements in MS patients, which are compatible with altered cognitive status, there is no common pattern of these alterations. We interpret this as a consequence of the patchy, heterogeneous distribution of white matter involvement in MS that provokes multiple combinations of impairment at different points in the different networks involved in eye motor control. Further studies are therefore required.
