BACKGROUND: Biomedtrix BFX® cementless total hip replacement (THR) requires the use of femoral broaches to prepare a press-fit envelope within the femur for subsequent stem insertion. Current broaches contain teeth that crush and remove cancellous bone; however, they are not particularly well-suited for broaching sclerotic (corticalized) cancellous bone. In this study, three tooth designs [Control, TG1 (additional V-grooves), TG2 (diamond tooth pattern)] were evaluated with a quasi-static testing protocol and polyurethane test blocks simulating normal and sclerotic bone. To mimic clinical broaching, a series of five sequential broach insertions were used to determine cumulative broaching energy (J) and peak loads during broach insertion. To determine the effect of broach tooth design on THR stem insertion, a BFX® stem was inserted into prepared test blocks and insertion and subsidence energy and peak loads were determined. RESULTS: Broach tooth design led to significant differences in broaching energy and peak broaching loads in test blocks of both densities. In low density test blocks, TG1 required the lowest cumulative broaching energy (10.76 ±0.29 J), followed by Control (12.18 ±1.20 J) and TG2 (16.66 ±0.78 J) broaches. In high density test blocks, TG1 required the lowest cumulative broaching energy (32.60 ±2.54 J) as compared to Control (33.25 ±2.16 J) and TG2 (59.97 ±3.07 J).  During stem insertion and subsidence testing, stem insertion energy for high density test blocks prepared with Control broaches was 14.53 ± 0.81 J, which was significantly lower than blocks prepared with TG1 (22.53 ± 1.04 J) or TG2 (19.38 ± 3.00 J) broaches. For stem subsidence testing in high density blocks, TG1 prepared blocks required the highest amount of energy to undergo subsidence (14.49 ± 0.49 J), which was significantly greater than test blocks prepared with Control (11.09 ±0.09 J) or TG2 (12.57 ± 0.81 J) broaches. CONCLUSIONS: The additional V-grooves in TG1 broaches demonstrated improved broaching performance while also generating press-fit envelopes that were more resistant to stem insertion and subsidence. TG1 broaches may prove useful in the clinical setting; however additional studies that more closely simulate clinical broach impaction are necessary prior to making widespread changes to THR broaches.

RESUMEN

Data resulting from environmental monitoring programs are valuable assets for natural resource managers, decision-makers, and researchers. These data are often collected to inform specific reporting needs or decisions with a specific timeframe. While program-oriented data and related publications are effective for meeting program goals, sharing well-documented data and metadata allows users to research aspects outside initial program intentions. As part of an effort to integrate data from four long-term large-scale US aquatic monitoring programs, we evaluated the original datasets against the FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) data principles and offer recommendations and lessons learned. Differences in data governance across these programs resulted in considerable effort to access and reuse the original datasets. Requirements, guidance, and resources available to support data publishing and documentation are inconsistent across agencies and monitoring programs, resulting in various data formats and storage locations that are not easily found, accessed, or reused. Making monitoring data FAIR will reduce barriers to data discovery and reuse. Programs are continuously striving to improve data management, data products, and metadata; however, provision of related tools, consistent guidelines and standards, and more resources to do this work is needed. Given the value of these data and the significant effort required to access and reuse them, actions and steps intended on improving data documentation and accessibility are described.

BACKGROUND: Total hip replacement (THR) in the gold standard surgical treatment for the canine hip. While it has been shown that greater trochanter morphology affects post-operative cementless stem position in humans, trochanter morphology and the effect on cementless stem position has not been extensively evaluated in dogs. The objective of this study was to classify greater trochanter morphology and identify potential associations between trochanter morphology and patient demographics, femoral canal geometry, surgical time, technique modifications, and post-operative stem position in client-owned dogs undergoing cementless THR. RESULTS: In this retrospective study, medical records and radiographs of 135 dogs undergoing 150 cementless total hip replacements from 2013 to 2020 were included. Trochanters were classified in the frontal plane using an ordinal grading system adapted from human THR. A Grade I trochanter denoted a trochanter positioned lateral to the periosteal surface of the lateral femoral cortex, whereas a Grade IV trochanter denoted a trochanter positioned medial to the anatomic axis of the femur. Associations between trochanter grade and other variables were examined using ANOVA, Kruskall-Wallis, or chi-squared tests. Significance was assumed at P ≤ .05. Trochanters were classified as follows: Grade I (44/150, 29.3%), Grade II (56/150, 37.4%), Grade III (44/150, 29.3%), Grade IV (6/150, 4.0%). Grade IV trochanters had lower anatomic lateral distal femoral angle (aLDFA; 91.0 ± 6.2°), angle of inclination (117.7 ± 10.5°), and canal flare index (1.53 ± 0.27). When compared to all groups, Grade IV trochanters were associated with longer surgical times (Grade IV: 227.0 ± 34.2 min; all grades: 183.2 ± 32.9 min) and technique modifications (Grade IV: 83.3%; all grades: 18%). Grade I trochanters had stems placed in valgus (- 1.8 ± 2.33°), whereas Grade II (0.52 ± 2.36°), III (0.77 ± 2.58°), and IV (0.67 ± 2.73°) trochanters exhibited varus stems. Depth of stem insertion was greater (11.2 ± 4.2 mm) for Grade IV trochanters. CONCLUSIONS: Trochanter grade was associated with post-operative stem alignment and translation in the frontal plane. Grade IV trochanters were associated with altered femoral geometry, increased surgical time, technique modifications, and stem insertion depth. Pre-operative greater trochanter classification may prove useful in identifying cases requiring prolonged surgical times or technique modifications.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the surgical technique and report the long-term outcome of greater trochanteric osteotomy (GTO) as a component of cementless total hip replacement (THR) in dogs with severe medialization of the greater trochanter or chronic craniodorsal hip luxation. STUDY DESIGN: Short case series. ANIMALS: Four dogs treated with five THRs. METHODS: Data collected from medical records included signalment, indication for THR, duration of clinical signs, body weight, pre- and post-operative radiographic assessment, surgical templating, osteotomy technique, THR implant selection, surgical time, complications, and long-term clinical and radiographic follow-up. Clinical outcomes were determined based on in-hospital history, orthopedic examination, and radiographic evaluation. RESULTS: All five surgical procedures resulted in satisfactory long-term clinical results at follow-up a median of 48.2 months (range, 34-56 months) after THR. There were no minor complications and one major complication. One dog experienced post-operative luxation unrelated to the GTO and was successfully treated with a cup revision. CONCLUSION AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: GTO was effective in facilitating cementless THR in dogs with either severe medialization of the greater trochanter or chronic craniodorsal luxation.

AIM: To compare the fracture strength of extracted human roots with apical plugs of mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) mixed with either Ca- and Mg-free phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) or water, with and without calcium hydroxide (CH) canal pre-medication. METHODOLOGY: A total of 180 single-rooted human teeth were prepared to resemble immature roots and divided into groups (n = 20). The negative control received canal irrigation only, and the positive control received intracanal treatment with CH for either two or twelve weeks. MTA mixed with water was used in Group 1: (i) without CH pre-medication - MTA(W); (ii) after 2 weeks CH pre-medication - 2/52CH + MTA(W); and (iii) after 12-week CH pre-medication - 12/52 CH + MTA(W). MTA mixed with PBS was used in Group 2: (i) without CH pre-medication - MTA(PBS); (ii) after 2-week CH pre-medication - 2/52CH + MTA(PBS); and (iii) after 12-week CH pre-medication - 12/52 CH + MTA(PBS). A compressive force was applied to each root until the point of fracture. The results were analysed by the Kruskal-Wallis and Dunn's multiple comparisons tests (P < 0.05). RESULTS: There was no significant difference between groups MTA(W), MTA(PBS) and 2/52CH + MTA(PBS), and all three groups were significantly (P < 0.01, P < 0.05 and P < 0.05, respectively) more resistant to fracture than the negative control. Within Group 1, the samples that received two- (P < 0.01) and twelve-week (P < 0.001) CH pre-treatment were more prone to fracture than those which did not. No difference was found amongst the control groups. The roots of the MTA(PBS) group had a higher dependability (P < 0.05) than the MTA(W) group when compared by the Weibull modulus. The difference was also present when a 2-week CH pre-medication was used. CONCLUSIONS: Mineral trioxide aggregate mixed with Ca- and Mg-free phosphate-buffered saline had a significant strengthening effect on the fracture resistance of structurally weak roots, even when short-term calcium hydroxide pre-medication had been used. MTA mixed with water lost its strengthening effect on human roots when 2- or 12-week CH pre-treatment had been used. Use of CH dressing for up to 12 weeks had no negative effect on fracture resistance of human roots.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the effect of proximal abducting ulnar osteotomy (PAUL) on frontal plane thoracic limb alignment in standing and recumbent positions. STUDY DESIGN: Ex vivo cadaveric study. SAMPLE POPULATION: Canine thoracic limbs (n = 15 limb pairs). METHODS: Limbs were acquired from healthy Labrador retrievers that had been euthanized for reasons unrelated to this study. A limb press was used to obtain standing and recumbent caudocranial radiographs before and after PAUL. Foot lateralization and rotation were directly measured in standing position. Mechanical joint angles were determined using full limb radiographic montages and the center of rotation of angulation (CORA) method for pre-PAUL (Pre), 2-mm PAUL (PAUL2), and 3-mm PAUL (PAUL3). Data are reported as mean ± SD and 95% CI. Mixed linear modeling was used to identify differences in limb alignment values and foot position, with significance established at P ≤ .004. RESULTS: There were differences in five of 12 limb alignment values pre-PAUL and post-PAUL in standing and recumbent positions. In the standing position, there was an increase in mechanical medial proximal radioulnar angle (Pre, 80.6° ± 2.5°; PAUL2, 82.6° ± 2.4°; PAUL3, 84° ± 2.4°) and a decrease in elbow compression angle (Pre, 1.4° ± 1.3°; PAUL2, 1° ± 0.9°; PAUL3, 0.8° ± 1°). There was a movement of mechanical humeral radioulnar angle (Pre, -8.9° ± 2.8°; PAUL2, -6.1° ± 2.7°; PAUL3, -5.2 ± 2.7°), mechanical thoracic humeral angle (Pre, 3.9° ± 1.7°; PAUL2, 2.4° ± 1.4°; PAUL3, 2.6° ± 1.5°), and elbow mechanical axis deviation (Pre, 1.9% ± 1.1%; PAUL2, 0.9% ± 1.1%; PAUL3, 0.4% ± 1.4%) toward a value of "0" representing coaxial alignment of the limb. The foot underwent lateralization (Pre, 1.4 ± 0.6 cm; PAUL2, 1.8 ± 0.7 cm; PAUL3, 2.3 ± 0.7 cm) and external rotation (Pre, 10.5° ± 4.7°; PAUL2, 13.7° ± 5.1°; PAUL3, 16° ± 6.6°). CONCLUSION: In the ex vivo setting, PAUL resulted in translation of the mechanical axis of the thoracic limb from a medial to lateral direction through alterations in limb alignment values associated with the elbow, humerus, and proximal radius/ulna. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Additional studies are required to determine whether PAUL alters thoracic limb alignment in client-owned dogs.

OBJECTIVE: To report the clinical characteristics, surgical management, and medium-term outcomes of total hip replacement (THR) performed in dogs with previous contralateral pelvic limb amputation. ANIMALS: Thirteen client-owned dogs. STUDY DESIGN: Multi-institutional retrospective clinical study. METHODS: Data recorded from medical records included signalment, indication for amputation and THR, and surgical complications. Implant positioning and complications were assessed on radiographs. Clinical outcomes were evaluated during follow-up examinations by one of the authors and through a mobility- and lifestyle-based questionnaire completed by owners. RESULTS: All 13 dogs had satisfactory clinical results at follow-up a median of 3 months (range, 2-36) after THR. No postoperative luxation was recorded. Four dogs had minor complications that did not require additional treatment. The only major complication was one failure of osseointegration of a cementless acetabular cup, and it was successfully revised. CONCLUSION: Total hip replacement resulted in satisfactory clinical results and acceptable morbidity in this population. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Total hip replacement should be considered in dogs with severe coxofemoral joint disease and contralateral pelvic limb amputation.

Historic management actions authorized or allowed by federal land management agencies have had a profound negative effect on salmon, trout, and char populations and their habitats. To rectify past failings, in the 1990s, federal agencies in the Interior Columbia River Basin modified how they conducted land management activities to foster the conservation of aquatic species. The primary policy changes were to provide additional protection and restoration of lands near streams, lakes, and wetlands. What remains uncertain was whether these changes have altered the trajectory of stream habitat conditions. To address this question, we evaluate the status and trends of ten stream habitat attributes; wood frequency, wood volume, residual pool depth, percent pool, pool frequency, pool tail fines (< 6 mm), median particle size, percent undercut banks, bank angle, and streambank stability in managed and reference catchments following changes in management policies. Our review of these data support the hypothesis that changes made in management standards and guidelines in the 1990s are related to improved stream conditions. Determining the precise magnitude of changes in stream conditions that resulted from the modification of land management policies is difficult due to the shifting environmental baseline. By understanding and accounting for how changes in stream conditions reflect improved land management policies and broader environmental trends, federal agencies will be better situated to make project level decisions that benefit aquatic resources.

OBJECTIVE: To compare articular cartilage scores in cranial cruciate ligament (CCL)-deficient dogs with or without concurrent bucket handle tears (BHT) of the medial meniscus. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective case series. ANIMALS: Client-owned dogs treated with arthroscopy and tibial plateau leveling osteotomy or extracapsular repair for complete CCL rupture (290 stifles from 264 dogs). METHODS: Medical records and arthroscopic images were reviewed. Medial femoral condyle (MFC) and medial tibial plateau (MTP) cartilage was scored using the modified Outerbridge scale. Periarticular osteophytosis (PAO) and injury to the medial meniscus were recorded. Data were analyzed using Student's t-tests, Wilcoxon rank-sum test, and Fisher's exact test for changes in the stifle based on meniscal condition, body weight, and duration of lameness. RESULTS: PAO, MFC, and MTP articular cartilage scores were not significantly different in dogs with or without BHT. There were no significant differences in MFC or MTP scores when dogs were evaluated based on bodyweight and the presence or absence of a BHT. However, PAO formation was significantly increased in dogs weighing >13.6 kg and concurrent meniscal injury vs. dogs weighing <13.6 kg and concurrent meniscal injury (P < .001). Significantly more stifles with chronic lameness (40 of 89; 44.9%) had the highest PAO score of 2 reported compared to only 42 of 182 stifles (23.1%) with acute lameness (P < .001). CONCLUSION: The presence of a BHT of the medial meniscus was not associated with more severe arthroscopic articular cartilage lesions in the medial joint compartment at the time of surgery.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the effect of sliding humeral osteotomy (SHO) on frontal plane thoracic limb alignment in standing and recumbent limb positions. STUDY DESIGN: Canine cadaveric study. SAMPLE POPULATION: Canine thoracic limbs (n=15 limb pairs). METHODS: Limbs acquired from healthy Labrador Retrievers euthanatized for reasons unrelated to this study were mounted in a limb press and aligned in a standing position followed by axial loading at 30% body weight. Frontal plane radiography was performed in standing and recumbent positions pre- and post-SHO. In the standing position, lateralization of the foot was measured pre- and post-SHO using a textured grid secured to the limb press base plate. Twelve thoracic limb alignment values (mean ± SD and 95% CI) were determined using the center of rotation of angulation (CORA) method were compared using linear mixed models to determine if significant differences existed between limb alignment values pre- or post-SHO, controlling for dog, limb, and limb position. RESULTS: Six of 12 standing or recumbent alignment values were significantly different pre- and post-SHO. SHO resulted in decreased mechanical lateral distal humeral angle and movement of the mechanical humeral radio-ulnar angle, radio-ulnar metacarpal angle, thoracic humeral angle, and elbow mechanical axis deviation toward coaxial limb alignment. In the standing position, the foot underwent significant lateralization post-SHO. CONCLUSION: SHO resulted in significant alteration in frontal plane thoracic limb alignment. Additional studies are necessary to determine if the changes reported using our ex vivo model occur following SHO in vivo.

Noninvasive identification of canine articular cartilage injuries is challenging. The objective of this prospective, cadaveric, diagnostic accuracy study was to determine if small field-of-view, three tesla magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was an accurate method for identifying experimentally induced cartilage defects in canine stifle joints. Forty-two canine cadaveric stifles (n = 6/group) were treated with sham control, 0.5, 1.0, or 3.0 mm deep defects in the medial or lateral femoral condyle. Proton density-weighted, T1-weighted, fast-low angle shot, and T2 maps were generated in dorsal and sagittal planes. Defect location and size were independently determined by two evaluators and compared to histologic measurements. Accuracy of MRI was determined using concordance correlation coefficients. Defects were identified correctly in 98.8% (Evaluator 1) and 98.2% (Evaluator 2) of joints. Concordance correlation coefficients between MRI and histopathology were greater for defect depth (Evaluator 1: 0.68-0.84; Evaluator 2: 0.76-0.83) compared to width (Evaluator 1: 0.30-0.54; Evaluator 2: 0.48-0.68). However, MRI overestimated defect depth (histopathology: 1.65 ± 0.94 mm; Evaluator 1, range of means: 2.07-2.38 mm; Evaluator 2, range of means: 2-2.2 mm) and width (histopathology: 6.98 ± 1.32 mm; Evaluator 1, range of means: 8.33-8.8 mm; Evaluator 2, range of means: 6.64-7.16 mm). Using the paired t-test, the mean T2 relaxation time of cartilage defects was significantly greater than the mean T2 relaxation time of adjacent normal cartilage for both evaluators (P < 0.0001). Findings indicated that MRI is an accurate method for identifying cartilage defects in the cadaveric canine stifle. Additional studies are needed to determine the in vivo accuracy of this method.

Before-after-control-impact (BACI) designs are an effective method to evaluate natural and human-induced perturbations on ecological variables when treatment sites cannot be randomly chosen. While effect sizes of interest can be tested with frequentist methods, using Bayesian Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) sampling methods, probabilities of effect sizes, such as a ≥20 % increase in density after restoration, can be directly estimated. Although BACI and Bayesian methods are used widely for assessing natural and human-induced impacts for field experiments, the application of hierarchal Bayesian modeling with MCMC sampling to BACI designs is less common. Here, we combine these approaches and extend the typical presentation of results with an easy to interpret ratio, which provides an answer to the main study question-"How much impact did a management action or natural perturbation have?" As an example of this approach, we evaluate the impact of a restoration project, which implemented beaver dam analogs, on survival and density of juvenile steelhead. Results indicated the probabilities of a ≥30 % increase were high for survival and density after the dams were installed, 0.88 and 0.99, respectively, while probabilities for a higher increase of ≥50 % were variable, 0.17 and 0.82, respectively. This approach demonstrates a useful extension of Bayesian methods that can easily be generalized to other study designs from simple (e.g., single factor ANOVA, paired t test) to more complicated block designs (e.g., crossover, split-plot). This approach is valuable for estimating the probabilities of restoration impacts or other management actions.

AIM: To investigate the prevalence of periradicular periodontitis (PRP) using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans in a retrospective cross-sectional epidemiological study in a Scottish subpopulation. METHODOLOGY: Of the 319 CBCT scans performed at Dundee Dental Hospital between November 2009 and July 2012, 245 dentate scans of patients over 18 years of age were included and 3595 teeth examined. Odds ratios were calculated, and the association between root filling and posts with PRP was determined. RESULTS: Radiological signs of PRP were detected in 209 teeth (5.8%) in 96 patients (male = 53, female = 43) of which 145 (69.4%) were measurable and 64 (30.6%) appeared as periapical widening. Most lesions were seen in the 46-55-year age group and in maxillary anterior teeth (35.4%); 47.4% (n = 81) of the total root filled teeth (n = 171) had PRP. Of the root filled teeth with lesions, approximately half (50.6%) had an inadequate root filling. Teeth with crowns, but not root filled, accounted for 17.7% of PRP. Periapical changes were detected on a high proportion of teeth with post-retained crowns (70.7%). The presence of a root filling was significantly associated with PRP (z = 17.689 P < 0.0001; odds ratio 16.36 < 23.17 < 32.83, 95% CI) and the presence of a post (z = 10.901 P < 0.0001; odds ratio 21.36 < 41.8021 < 81.78, 95% CI). CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of PRP in a Scottish subpopulation was 5.8%. The presence of a root filling or a post-retained crown was significantly associated with the presence of PRP as determined by CBCT scans. The prevalence of periradicular disease in root filled teeth remains high in the Scottish population.

OBJECTIVE: To report thoracic limb alignment values in healthy dogs; to determine if limb alignment values are significantly different when obtained from standing versus recumbent radiographic projections. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective cross-sectional study. ANIMALS: Labrador Retrievers (n = 45) >15 months of age. METHODS: Standing and recumbent radiographs were obtained and limb montages were randomized before analysis by a single investigator blinded to dog, limb, and limb position. Twelve limb alignment values were determined using the CORA methodology. Measurements were performed in triplicate and intra-observer variability was evaluated by intra-class correlation coefficient (ICC). Limb alignment values were reported as mean ± SD and 95% confidence intervals. Linear mixed models were used to determine if significant associations existed between limb alignment values and limb, limb position, gender, age, weight, and body condition score. RESULTS: There were significant differences in standing and recumbent limb alignment values for all values except elbow mechanical axis deviation (eMAD). Limb, gender, age, body weight, and body condition score had no effect. ICC values ranged from 0.522 to 0.758, indicating moderate to substantial agreement for repeated measurements by a single investigator. CONCLUSIONS: Limb alignment values are significantly different when determined from standing versus recumbent radiographs in healthy Labrador Retrievers.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the biomechanical properties of clamp rod internal fixation (CRIF)/rod and LC-DCP/rod constructs in a canine femoral gap model. STUDY DESIGN: Cadaveric biomechanical study. SAMPLE POPULATION: Canine femora (n = 10 pair). METHODS: Femora with 40 mm ostectomies were assigned to LC-DCP/rod or CRIF/rod treatment groups. Five construct pairs had 4-point bending and 5 pairs had torsional loading. Construct stiffness, strength, and bending angle at failure or permanent angular deformation (torsional loading) were determined. Statistical comparisons were performed using Student t tests; significance was set at P ≤ .05. RESULTS: There was significantly greater permanent angular deformation, or residual twist, in the CRIF/rod constructs (23.1 ± 0.89°) compared with LC-DCP/rod constructs (7.47 ± 2.08°). Whereas there was no significant difference in torsional stiffness of these constructs at torsional loads <4.92 N m (P = .819), LC-DCP/rod constructs had significantly greater torsional stiffness (0.303 ± 0.079 N m/°) and strength (11.546 ± 2.79 N m) than CRIF/rod construct stiffness (0.06 ± 0.013 N m/°) and strength (6.078 ± 0.527 N m) at torsional loads >4.92 N m. Differences in stiffness and strength in 4-point bending were not statistically significant. CONCLUSIONS: LC-DCP/rod constructs had significantly less permanent angular deformation than CRIF/rod constructs. CRIF/rod constructs became less stiff as torsional load was increased, thus the LC-DCP/rod constructs had significantly greater torsional stiffness and strength under high torsional loads. LC-DCP/rod and CRIF/rod constructs performed similarly under 4-point bend loading conditions.

Achieving surgical success in orthopedic patients with metabolic disease remains a substantial challenge. Diabetic patients exhibit a unique tissue microenvironment consisting of high levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which promotes osteoclastic activity and leads to decreased bone healing. Alternative solutions, such as synthetic grafts, incorporating progenitor cells or growth factors, can be costly and have processing constraints. Previously, the potential for thiol-methacrylate networks to sequester ROS while possessing tunable mechanical properties and degradation rates has been demonstrated. In this study, the ability to fabricate thiol-methacrylate interconnected porous scaffolds using emulsion templating to create monoliths with an average porosity of 97.0% is reported. The average pore sizes of the scaffolds range from 27 to 656 µm. The scaffolds can sequester pathologic levels of ROS via hydrogen peroxide consumption and are not impacted by sterilization. Subcutaneous implantation shows no signs of acute toxicity. Finally, in a 6-week bilateral calvarial defect model in Zucker diabetic fatty rats, ROS scaffolds increase new bone volume by 66% over sham defects. Histologic analysis identifies woven bone infiltration throughout the scaffold and neovascularization. Overall, this study suggests that porous thiol-methacrylate scaffolds may improve healing for bone grafting applications where high levels of ROS hinder bone growth.

OBJECTIVE: To report the effectiveness of a bone plate/headless compression screw (HCS) construct in preventing tibial plateau angle (TPA) shift postoperatively and to describe radiographic healing of the osteotomy. STUDY DESIGN: Case series. ANIMALS: Dogs (n = 31). METHODS: Records of dogs diagnosed with cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) injury treated with the center of rotation of angulation (CORA) based leveling osteotomy (CBLO) stabilized with a bone plate augmented with a HCS were reviewed. Breed, age, weight, and gender were recorded. Radiographs were reviewed for determination of preoperative tibial plateau angle (PreTPA), postoperative TPA (PostTPA), patellar tendon angle (PTA) postoperatively, and TPA at final evaluation (FinalTPA). Difference between PostTPA and FinalTPA was used to define any TPA shift. Radiographic healing at final evaluation was graded based on a 5-point scale. RESULTS: Mean time to final recheck was 88 days (range 49-237 days) with mean ± SD PreTPA = 28.6 ± 4.8°; PostTPA = 9.2 ± 2.2°; FinalTPA = 9.7 ± 2.6°; and TPA Shift = 0.52 ± 1.61°. There was no significant difference between PostTPA and FinalTPA (P = .084, power > 0.80). Mean postoperative PTA was 89.9 ± 1.7°. There were 2 implant related complications; 1 HCS migration and 1 HCS failure. CONCLUSION: Stabilization of the CBLO using a bone plate augmented with a HCS was effective in maintaining PostTPA and achieving satisfactory radiographic healing.

A number of surgical techniques have been reported for dissection and ligation of patent ductus arteriosi (PDAs) in dogs. The objectives of this study were to provide a detailed description of an intrapericardial technique for PDA dissection and ligation and to report the clinical outcome of that technique in dogs. Medical records of 35 dogs were retrospectively reviewed for signalment, clinical signs, echocardiographic findings, surgical time, intra- and postoperative complications, and completeness of ductal closure. Median surgery time was 60 min (range, 35-125 min). Neither intraoperative nor postoperative complications occurred. Within 48 hr of surgery, the continuous left basilar heart murmur was absent in all dogs, and complete echocardiographic closure was confirmed in 29 of 32 dogs. Residual flow was identified echocardiographically in three dogs within 48 hr of surgery. Residual flow was decreased in one dog at 1 mo, which resolved within 33 mo. One dog had mild residual flow postoperatively but did not return for follow-up. The intrapericardial technique was successful for PDA dissection and ligation and had a lower rate (6%) of echocardiographic residual flow compared with previously reported techniques.

Pancarpal canine arthrodesis (PCA) sets immobilization of all three carpal joints via dorsal plating to result in bony fusion. Whereas the first version of the plate uses a round hole (RH) for the radiocarpal (RC) screw region, its modification into an oval hole (OH) in a later version improves versatility in surgical application. The aim of this study was to mechanically investigate the fatigue life of the PCA plate types implementing these two features-PCA-RH and PCA-OH. Ten PCA-RH and 20 PCA-OH stainless steel (316LVM) plates were assigned to three study groups (n = 10). All plates were pre-bent at 20° and fixed to a canine forelimb model with simulated radius, RC bone and third metacarpal bone. The OH plates were fixed with an RC screw inserted either most proximal (OH-P) or most distal (OH-D). All specimens were cyclically tested at 8 Hz under 320 N loading until failure. Fatigue life outcome measures were cycles to failure and failure mode. Cycles to failure were higher for RH plate fixation (695,264 ± 344,023) versus both OH-P (447,900 ± 176,208) and OH-D (391,822 ± 165,116) plate configurations, being significantly different between RH and OH-D, p = 0.03. No significant difference was detected between OH-P and OH-D configurations, p = 0.09. Despite potential surgical advantages, the shorter fatigue life of the PCA-OH plate design may mitigate its benefits compared to the plate design with a round radiocarpal screw hole. Moreover, the failure risk of plates with an oval hole is increased regardless from the screw position in this hole. Based on these findings, the PCA plate with the current oval radiocarpal screw hole configuration cannot be recommended for clinical use.
