RESUMEN

Moiré superlattices in atomically thin van der Waals heterostructures hold great promise for extended control of electronic and valleytronic lifetimes1-7, the confinement of excitons in artificial moiré lattices8-13 and the formation of exotic quantum phases14-18. Such moiré-induced emergent phenomena are particularly strong for interlayer excitons, where the hole and the electron are localized in different layers of the heterostructure19,20. To exploit the full potential of correlated moiré and exciton physics, a thorough understanding of the ultrafast interlayer exciton formation process and the real-space wavefunction confinement is indispensable. Here we show that femtosecond photoemission momentum microscopy provides quantitative access to these key properties of the moiré interlayer excitons. First, we elucidate that interlayer excitons are dominantly formed through femtosecond exciton-phonon scattering and subsequent charge transfer at the interlayer-hybridized Σ valleys. Second, we show that interlayer excitons exhibit a momentum fingerprint that is a direct hallmark of the superlattice moiré modification. Third, we reconstruct the wavefunction distribution of the electronic part of the exciton and compare the size with the real-space moiré superlattice. Our work provides direct access to interlayer exciton formation dynamics in space and time and reveals opportunities to study correlated moiré and exciton physics for the future realization of exotic quantum phases of matter.

Twisted bilayer graphene provides an ideal solid-state model to explore correlated material properties and opportunities for a variety of optoelectronic applications, but reliable, fast characterization of the twist angle remains a challenge. Here we introduce spectroscopic ellipsometric contrast microscopy (SECM) as a tool for mapping twist angle disorder in optically resonant twisted bilayer graphene. We optimize the ellipsometric angles to enhance the image contrast based on measured and calculated reflection coefficients of incident light. The optical resonances associated with van Hove singularities correlate well to Raman and angle-resolved photoelectron emission spectroscopy, confirming the accuracy of SECM. The results highlight the advantages of SECM, which proves to be a fast, nondestructive method for characterization of twisted bilayer graphene over large areas, unlocking process, material, and device screening and cross-correlative measurement potential for bilayer and multilayer materials.

Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a major public health concern, with increasing rates of IPV being seen around the world during the COVID-19 pandemic. Previous research has linked the perpetration of IPV and other forms of sexual violence to aspects of romantic attachment psychology, with insecure anxious/preoccupied attachment most often linked to higher rates of IPV. Stressful events typically activate the attachment system and may either aggravate or disrupt its regulatory functioning. In the present study, we investigated whether COVID-related PTSD and depressive symptoms were associated with increased IPV perpetration and whether this relationship was moderated by levels of attachment security. Our findings indicated that higher COVID-related PTSD was significantly associated with increased IPV perpetration in securely attached individuals, whereas depressive symptoms was significantly associated with decreased IPV perpetration in securely attached individuals. IPV perpetration by insecure individuals was consistently high regardless of COVID-related PTSD or depressive symptoms. These findings suggest that COVID-related PTSD may erode adaptive attachment functioning, particularly among the previously secure, which can have important consequences for secure individuals and their intimate partners. The present findings may explain some of the recent increase in IPV cases worldwide and serve to raise awareness and motivate clinical interventions to more efficiently help both victims and perpetrators of IPV stay safe while staying home.

PURPOSE: Balloon dilatation of the Eustachian tube (BDET) is an option for treating chronic obstructive Eustachian tube dysfunction (COETD). In this prospective multicentric study, the main objective was to evaluate the results of BDET in unilateral COETD refractory to medical treatment. METHODS: Adults with unilateral COETD whose Eustachian Tube Score (ETS) was less than 5 despite medical pressure therapy were included. The primary endpoint was the change in ETS measured at 2, 6, and 12 months after BDET. Secondary objectives were the evolution of clinical symptoms assessed by the Eustachian Tube Questionnaire (ETDQ-7), audiometry, tympanometry, and otoscopy changes after BDET. RESULTS: Twenty-eight patients were included between May 2014 and December 2017 and were treated with BDET without adverse effects in three different referral centers. Population's median age was 52 (Q25; Q75: 24, 82) years. The median follow-up time was 381 (Q25; Q75: 364; 418) days. The median ETS was 2 (Q25; Q75: 1; 4) before BDET. There was a significant improvement in ETS at 2 and 6 months and 1 year after BDET (score at 1 year: 6 (Q25; Q75: 2; 8) (p < 0.0001)). There was a significant, sustained improvement in the ETDQ-7 with a score of 4.21 (Q25; Q75-3.50; 4.79) before BDET and 3.43 (Q25; Q75-2.43; 4.14) (p = 0.0012) at 1 year. There was a suggestive improvement in tympanometry results at 1 year (p = 0.025). CONCLUSION: BDET provides an improvement in symptoms and objective measures assessed at 1 year in patients with COETD who have failed medical treatment. RESUMEN

Evolved mate preferences comprise a central causal process in Darwin's theory of sexual selection. Their powerful influences have been documented in all sexually reproducing species, including in sexual strategies in humans. This article reviews the science of human mate preferences and their myriad behavioral manifestations. We discuss sex differences and sex similarities in human sexual psychology, which vary according to short-term and long-term mating contexts. We review context-specific shifts in mating strategy depending on individual, social, and ecological qualities such as mate value, life history strategy, sex ratio, gender economic inequality, and cultural norms. We review the empirical evidence for the impact of mate preferences on actual mating decisions. Mate preferences also dramatically influence tactics of mate attraction, tactics of mate retention, patterns of deception, causes of sexual regret, attraction to cues to sexual exploitability, attraction to cues to fertility, attraction to cues to resources and protection, derogation of competitors, causes of breakups, and patterns of remarriage. We conclude by articulating unresolved issues and offer a future agenda for the science of human mating, including how humans invent novel cultural technologies to better implement ancient sexual strategies and how cultural evolution may be dramatically influencing our evolved mating psychology.

Tisagenlecleucel, a CD19-specific autologous chimeric antigen receptor (CAR)-T cell therapy, is efficacious for the treatment of relapsed/refractory B-cell precursor acute lymphoblastic leukemia and diffuse large B-cell lymphoma. The tisagenlecleucel manufacturing process was initially developed in an academic setting and subsequently transferred to industry for qualification, validation and scaling up for global clinical trials and commercial distribution. Use of fresh leukapheresis material was recognized early on in the transfer process as a challenge with regard to establishing a global supply chain. To maximize manufacturing success rates and to overcome logistical challenges, cryopreservation was adapted into the Novartis manufacturing process from the beginning of clinical trials. Tisagenlecleucel manufactured in centralized facilities with cryopreserved leukapheresis material has been used successfully in global clinical trials at more than 50 clinical centers in 12 countries. Cryopreservation provides flexibility in scheduling leukapheresis when the patient's health is optimal to provide T cells; it also provides protection from external factors, such as shipping delays, and removes manufacturing time constraints. Several studies were performed to establish comparability of fresh versus cryopreserved leukapheresis material, to evaluate and optimize the cryopreservation process, to determine the optimal temperature and maximum hold time prior to cryopreservation and to determine the optimal temperature range for shipment and storage. Using the current validated industry manufacturing process, high success rates were achieved with regard to manufacturing tisagenlecleucel batches that met specifications and were released to patients. Consistent product quality and positive clinical outcomes support the use of cryopreserved non-mobilized peripheral mononuclear blood cells collected using leukapheresis for CAR-T cell manufacturing.

We argue that the target authors focus too much on adaptive behavioral responses and not enough on actual psychological adaptations. We suggest the Dark Triad traits may represent facultative, psychological adaptations sensitive to seasonal variance and food shortages. We document that shorter distances from the equator are linked to higher national narcissism levels, whereas longer distances are associated with higher national-level machiavellianism. Dark Triad traits may serve as critical survival mechanisms when prioritizing oneself over and/or at the cost of others.

Men's and women's personalities appear to differ in several respects. Social role theories of development assume gender differences result primarily from perceived gender roles, gender socialization and sociostructural power differentials. As a consequence, social role theorists expect gender differences in personality to be smaller in cultures with more gender egalitarianism. Several large cross-cultural studies have generated sufficient data for evaluating these global personality predictions. Empirically, evidence suggests gender differences in most aspects of personality-Big Five traits, Dark Triad traits, self-esteem, subjective well-being, depression and values-are conspicuously larger in cultures with more egalitarian gender roles, gender socialization and sociopolitical gender equity. Similar patterns are evident when examining objectively measured attributes such as tested cognitive abilities and physical traits such as height and blood pressure. Social role theory appears inadequate for explaining some of the observed cultural variations in men's and women's personalities. Evolutionary theories regarding ecologically-evoked gender differences are described that may prove more useful in explaining global variation in human personality.

Heat shock transcription factor 1 (HSF1) is the master regulator of the heat shock response. Accumulating evidence shows that HSF1 is overexpressed in a variety of human cancers, is associated with cancer aggressiveness, and could serve as an independent diagnostic or prognostic biomarker. In this review, we will provide an overview of the multifaceted roles of HSF1 in cancer, with a special focus on the four underlying molecular mechanisms involved. First, HSF1 regulates the expression of heat shock proteins (HSPs) including HSP90, HSP70, and HSP27. Second, HSF1 regulates cellular metabolism, including glycolysis and lipid metabolism. Third, HSF1 serves as a regulator of different signaling pathways, such as HuR-HIF-1, Slug, protein kinase C (PKC), nuclear factor-kappaB (NF-κB), PI3K-AKT-mTOR, and mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathways. Finally, HSF1 regulates microRNAs (miRNAs) and long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs). Overall, HSF1 plays many important roles in cancer via regulating cell proliferation, anti-apoptosis, epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT), migration, invasion, and metastasis and may be a potential therapeutic target for human cancers.

Glioblastoma (GBM) contains a self-renewing, tumorigenic cancer stem cell (CSC) population which contributes to tumor propagation and therapeutic resistance. While the tumor microenvironment is essential to CSC self-renewal, the mechanisms by which CSCs sense and respond to microenvironmental conditions are poorly understood. Scavenger receptors are a broad class of membrane receptors well characterized on immune cells and instrumental in sensing apoptotic cellular debris and modified lipids. Here, we provide evidence that CSCs selectively use the scavenger receptor CD36 to promote their maintenance using patient-derived CSCs and in vivo xenograft models. CD36 expression was observed in GBM cells in addition to previously described cell types including endothelial cells, macrophages, and microglia. CD36 was enriched in CSCs and was able to functionally distinguish self-renewing cells. CD36 was coexpressed with integrin alpha 6 and CD133, previously described CSC markers, and CD36 reduction resulted in concomitant loss of integrin alpha 6 expression, self-renewal, and tumor initiation capacity. We confirmed oxidized phospholipids, ligands of CD36, were present in GBM and found that the proliferation of CSCs, but not non-CSCs, increased with exposure to oxidized low-density lipoprotein. CD36 was an informative biomarker of malignancy and negatively correlated to patient prognosis. These results provide a paradigm for CSCs to thrive by the selective enhanced expression of scavenger receptors, providing survival, and metabolic advantages.

Chemoresistance is a major obstacle in cancer treatment. Our previous studies have shown that miR-125b plays an important role in chemoresistance. Here we report a novel mechanism that up-regulation of miR-125b through Wnt signaling by Snail enriches cancer stem cells. Overexpression of Snail dramatically increases the expression of miR-125b through the Snail-activated Wnt/ß-catenin/TCF4 axis. Snail confers chemoresistance by repressing Bak1 through up-regulation of miR-125b. Restoring the expression of Bak1 or depleting miR-125b re-sensitizes Snail-expressing cancer cells to Taxol, indicating that miR-125b is critical in Snail-induced chemoresistance. Moreover, overexpression of miR-125b significantly increases the cancer stem cell population (CD24-CD44+), while depletion of miR-125b or rescue of the expression of Bak1 increases the non-stem cell population (CD24+CD44+) in Snail-overexpressing cells. These findings strongly support that miR-125b functions as a key mediator in Snail-induced cancer stem cell enrichment and chemoresistance. This novel mechanism for Snail-induced stem cell propagation and chemoresistance may have important implications in the development of strategies for overcoming cancer cell resistance to chemotherapy.

BACKGROUND: Rates of trichinellosis have declined significantly in the United States due to improved pork production practices and public awareness of the danger of eating raw or undercooked pork. In April 2011, the Minnesota Department of Health received a report of presumptive trichinellosis in a 50-year-old man with a history of wild boar consumption. A public health investigation was initiated. METHODS: Medical record reviews and patient and family interviews were conducted. Trichinella species serology was performed on patient and family serum samples, and larval identification was attempted on clinical specimens and meat samples. RESULTS: The index patient harvested a wild boar from an Iowa game farm; he processed the meat after returning home and developed gastrointestinal symptoms 2 days later. Four days after his illness onset, all 5 family members consumed a roast from the boar. The index patient sought healthcare 4 times after illness onset before being definitively diagnosed with trichinellosis. Following initiation of albendazole therapy, the index patient developed atrial fibrillation. One additional family member who processed the raw meat was diagnosed with trichinellosis. Trichinella spiralis larvae were identified in wild boar meat samples. CONCLUSIONS: Trichinellosis has long been recognized as a potential hazard of consuming undercooked wild carnivore meat, and historically has been associated with consumption of pork from domestic swine, but may be unfamiliar to practicing clinicians in the United States. Education of hunters and the broader population on the potential for trichinellosis and the importance of proper handling and cooking meat from wild or free-range animals needs to be reinforced.

OBJECTIVE: Diminished cholesterol efflux activity of apolipoprotein B (apoB)-depleted serum is associated with prevalent coronary artery disease, but its prognostic value for incident cardiovascular events is unclear. We investigated the relationship of cholesterol efflux activity with both prevalent coronary artery disease and incident development of major adverse cardiovascular events (death, myocardial infarction, or stroke). APPROACH AND RESULTS: Cholesterol efflux activity from free cholesterol-enriched macrophages was measured in 2 case-control cohorts: (1) an angiographic cohort (n=1150) comprising stable subjects undergoing elective diagnostic coronary angiography and (2) an outpatient cohort (n=577). Excitons are realizations of a correlated many-particle wave function, specifically consisting of electrons and holes in an entangled state. Excitons occur widely in semiconductors and are dominant excitations in semiconducting organic and low-dimensional quantum materials. To efficiently harness the strong optical response and high tuneability of excitons in optoelectronics and in energy-transformation processes, access to the full wavefunction of the entangled state is critical, but has so far not been feasible. Here, we show how time-resolved photoemission momentum microscopy can be used to gain access to the entangled wavefunction and to unravel the exciton's multiorbital electron and hole contributions. For the prototypical organic semiconductor buckminsterfullerene (C60), we exemplify the capabilities of exciton tomography and achieve unprecedented access to key properties of the entangled exciton state including localization, charge-transfer character, and ultrafast exciton formation and relaxation dynamics.

In two-dimensional semiconductors, cooperative and correlated interactions determine the material's excitonic properties and can even lead to the creation of correlated states of matter. Here, we study the fundamental two-particle correlated exciton state formed by the Coulomb interaction between single-particle holes and electrons. We find that the ultrafast transfer of an exciton's hole across a type II band-aligned semiconductor heterostructure leads to an unexpected sub-200-femtosecond upshift of the single-particle energy of the electron being photoemitted from the two-particle exciton state. While energy relaxation usually leads to an energetic downshift of the spectroscopic signature, we show that this upshift is a clear fingerprint of the correlated interaction of the electron and hole parts of the exciton. In this way, time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy is straightforwardly established as a powerful method to access electron-hole correlations and cooperative behavior in quantum materials. Our work highlights this capability and motivates the future study of optically inaccessible correlated excitonic and electronic states of matter.

The Empathy (E) scale has been proposed as a theoretically and psychometrically more satisfying alternative to existing self-report measures of empathy. Its four scales (facets) cover both components (cognitive vs. emotional) and both reality statuses (fictitious vs. real-life) of empathy in pairwise combinations. Confirmatory factor analyses of the E-scale in an Austrian community sample (N = 794) suggested that one prior assumption, namely the mutual orthogonality of these facets, may partly need revision; particularly, the E-scale facets seemed to reflect more strongly differences in the reality statuses than in the components of empathy. Utilizing numerous informative psychological traits, the scale's convergent and discriminant validity were examined. E-scale scores were consistently predicted by sex-related and relationship-related constructs and measures of antisocial attitudes and behavior. Among the Big Five personality dimensions, openness emerged as a major positive correlate of empathy. Sex and age were demographic correlates of E-scale scores (higher in women and the younger). Findings were discussed with regards to the definition and measurement of empathy.

Mating represents a suite of fundamental adaptive problems for humans. Yet a community of men, called incels (involuntary celibates), forge their identity around their perceived inability to solve these problems. Many incels engage in misogynistic online hostility, and there are concerns about violence stemming from the community. Despite significant media speculation about the potential mating psychology of incels, this has yet to be formally investigated in the scientific literature. In the first formal investigation of incel mating psychology, we compared a sample (n = 151) of self-identified male incels with non-incel single males (n = 149). Findings revealed that incels have a lower sense of self-perceived mate-value and a greater external locus of control regarding their singlehood. Contrary to mainstream media narratives, incels also reported lower minimum standards for mate preferences than non-incels. Incels (and non-incel single men) significantly overestimated the importance of physical attractiveness and financial prospects to women, and underestimated the importance of intelligence, kindness, and humor. Furthermore, incels underestimated women's overall minimum mate preference standards. Our findings suggest that incels should be targeted for interventions to challenge cognitive distortions around female mate preferences. Implications for incels' mental health and misogynistic attitudes are discussed, as well as directions for future research.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Regulatory T (Treg) cells (CD4+ CD25high FoxP3+) regulate mucosal tolerance; their adoptive transfer prevents or reduces symptoms of colitis in mouse models of inflammatory bowel disease. Colonic CD90+ mesenchymal myofibroblasts and fibroblasts (CMFs) are abundant, nonprofessional antigen-presenting cells in the normal human colonic mucosa that suppress proliferation of activated CD4+ effector T cells. We studied CMF suppressive capacity and evaluated the ability of CMF to induce Treg cells. METHODS: Allogeneic cocultures of CD4+ T cells and CMFs, derived from normal mucosa of patients undergoing colectomy for colon cancer or inflamed colonic tissues from patients with ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease, were used to assess activation of the Treg cells. RESULTS: Coculture of normal CMF with resting or naïve CD4+ T cells led to development of cells with a Treg phenotype; it also induced proliferation of a CD25+ CD127- FoxP3+ T cells, which expressed CTLA-4, interleukin-10, and transforming growth factor-ß and had suppressive activities. In contrast to dendritic cells, normal CMFs required exogenous interleukin-2 to induce proliferation of naturally occurring Treg cells. Induction of Treg cells by normal CMFs required major histocompatibility complex class II and prostaglandin E2. CMFs from patients with inflammatory bowel diseases had reduced capacity to induce active Treg cells and increased capacity to transiently generate CD4+CD25+/- CD127+ T cells that express low levels of FoxP3. CONCLUSIONS: CMFs suppress the immune response in normal colon tissue and might therefore help maintain colonic mucosal tolerance. Alterations in CMF-mediated induction of Treg cells might promote pathogenesis of inflammatory bowel diseases.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present study was to examine the effect of chronic morphine exposure on diffuse noxious inhibitory controls in a large population of neurons throughout the medullary dorsal horn, as assessed using immunocytochemistry for c-Fos protein. BACKGROUND: Overuse of medications, including the opioids, to treat migraine headache can lead to progressively more frequent headaches. In addition, chronic daily headache sufferers and chronic opioid users both lack the inhibition of pain produced by noxious stimulation of a distal body region, often referred to as diffuse noxious inhibitory controls. METHODS: In urethane anesthetized rats, Fos-positive neurons were quantified in chronic morphine and vehicle-treated animals following 52°C noxious thermal stimulation of the cornea with and without the application of a spatially remote noxious stimulus (placement of the tail in 55°C water). RESULTS: When compared to chronic morphine-treated animals that did not receive the spatially remote noxious stimulus, chronic morphine-treated animals given corneal stimulation along with the spatially remote noxious stimulus demonstrated a 163% increase (P < .05) in the number of Fos-positive neurons in the superficial laminae of the medullary dorsal horn and a 682% increase (P < .01) in deep laminae that was restricted to the side ipsilateral to the applied stimulus. In contrast, no significant difference was found in Fos-like immunoreactivity in vehicle-treated animals given concurrent cornea and tail stimulation or only cornea stimulation in either superficial or deep laminae. CONCLUSIONS: It is proposed that an increase in descending facilitation and subsequent loss of diffuse noxious inhibitory controls contributes to the development of medication overuse headache.
