RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: 'Learning by doing' is a learning model based on performing actions and gaining experience. The 'nursing process' is a systematic, rational method for providing nursing care. During their university education, nursing students need to acquire the ability to promote healthy lifestyles. OBJECTIVE: To determine the effectiveness of a learning strategy based on learning by doing and grounded in the use of the nursing process, on the lifestyle of nursing students. METHODS: This quasi-experimental intervention (before-after), performed over 2011-2022, involved 2300 nursing students at a university nursing school in Spain. The risk factors for chronic diseases-being a smoker, being overweight, or having high blood pressure-to which each student was exposed were recorded. Those positive for at least one risk factor selected companion students as 'support nursing students' who became responsible for designing an individualised care plan to reduce the risk(s) faced. To ensure the correct use of the nursing process, teachers approved and monitored the implementation of the care plans. Whether risk-reduction objectives were met was determined three months later. RESULTS: The students with risk factors largely improved their lifestyles (targets for reducing smoking/body weight were met) with the help of their supporting peers. CONCLUSIONS: The learning by doing method demonstrated its effectiveness, improving the lifestyle of at-risk students via the use of the nursing process.

RESUMEN

Modification of unprotected nucleosides has been attracting continuous interest, since these building blocks themselves and their phosphate-upgraded corresponding nucleotides have shown a plethora of uses in fields like biochemistry or pharmacy. Pd-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions, conducted in water or its mixtures with polar organic solvents, have frequently been the researchers' choice for the functionalization of the purine/pyrimidine base of the unprotected nucleosides. In this scenario, the availability of hydrophilic ligands and its water-soluble palladium complexes has markedly set the pace of the advances. The approach of our group to the synthesis of such complexes, Pd-imidates specifically, has faced critical stages, namely the jump to synthesize water soluble complexes from our experience working in conventional solvents, the preparation of phosphine free complexes and the overall goal of getting catalytic systems able to work close to room temperature. The continuous feedback with Kapdi's group, experienced in the chemistry of nucleosides, has produced over the last decade the interesting results in both fields presented here.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: This article describes the results of a study investigating the sensitivity and specificity of the Newborn Infant Parasympathetic Evaluation (NIPE) index for detecting the physiological changes resulting from nociception in painful procedures in very low birth weight (VLBW) infants. STUDY DESIGN: A prospective observational study was carried on of 44 newborns at 23 to 32 weeks' gestational age. The sensitivity and specificity of the NIPE index are analyzed using a receiver operating characteristic curve. Most of the painful procedures performed were skin-lancing and venipunctures. Nonpainful procedures consist of no intervention, with an interval of at least 1 hour with painful procedures in each newborn. RESULTS: The accuracy of the NIPE index to diagnose mild nociceptive stimulation in VLBW newborns is 73.2%. CONCLUSION: The NIPE index is a useful technique for assessing nociceptive stimulation in newborns, presenting less observer-dependent variability than other pain assessment scales. KEY POINTS: · The NIPE index offers an objective assessment of pain.. · Moderate-high sensitivity of the NIPE index in the evaluation of pain in premature newborns.. · Painful procedures in VLBW newborns are reflected as a decrease in the NIPE score..

RESUMEN

A study of the solution-phase, solid-state structures of halogen-bonded co-crystals of 1,4-bis(iodoethynyl)benzene (p-BIB) with three salts, namely, decyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTMABr), tetrapropylammonium bromide (TPABr), and tetrabutylammonium bromide (TBABr), has been carried out, along with theoretical calculations. Isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) showed that the binding constant of bromide with p-BIB in THF is not strongly dependent on the cation, and that the entropic term clearly dominates the enthalpic one in the free energy of binding. In the three crystal structures, the bromide anion acts as a doubly connected node for halogen bonding interactions, which results in linear or angular open chains. The intrachain angles (IBr-I) of the 1D supramolecular polymers based on p-BIB depend on the geometry and size of the cation and vary from 180° for DMTABr to 75° for TBABr. Non-covalent interaction (NCI) analysis of selected motifs and optimized crystals demonstrates that the balance between halogen bonds, hydrogen bonds, and van der Waals interactions, especially type-I halogenhalogen contacts, determines the crystal structures.

RESUMEN

Highly functional macromolecules with a well-defined architecture are the key to designing efficient and smart materials, and these polymeric systems can be tailored for specific applications in a diverse range of fields. Herein, the formation of a new liquid crystalline polymeric network based on the crosslinking of dendrimeric entities by the CuI-catalyzed variant of the Huisgen 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition of azides and alkynes to afford 1,2,3-triazoles is reported. The polymeric material obtained in this way is easy to process and exhibits a variety of properties, which include mesomorphism, viscoelastic behavior, and thermal contraction. The porous microstructure of the polymer network determines its capability to absorb solvent molecules and to encapsulate small molecules, like organic dyes, which can be released easily afterwards. Moreover, all these properties may be easily tuned by modifying the chemical structure of the constituent dendrimers, which makes this system a very interesting one for a number of applications.

RESUMEN

Liquid crystal macrocycles (LCMs) combine the unique properties of liquid crystals with those associated with macrocyclic compounds-shape persistence and the capability of hosting small molecules. Herein, we investigate the grafting of coumarin-containing promesogenic moieties to pillar[5]arene as a strategy to obtain multifunctional LCMs. Pillar[5]arenes containing 10 and 30 coumarin units are glassy materials with nematic mesomorphism. Moreover, the coumarin moieties afford the pillar[5]arene derivatives with enhanced film-forming and photoresponsive properties. Photodimerization of the coumarin moieties results in cross-linked polymer networks, which can be used as alignment layers. Therefore, liquid-crystal coumarin-containing pillar[5]arenes represent a significant addition to the family of LCMs and may become useful for the development of engineered, hierarchical structures and materials.

RESUMEN

Bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) is a multifactor pathology. Animal studies and cohort studies suggest that poor nutrient intake after birth increases the risk of BPD. The objective of the present study was to determine the existence of association between BPD in very low birth weight (VLBW) and energy intake during the first week of life. We recorded in a retrospective cohort study the intake of enteral and parenteral macronutrients during this period by examining the nutritional and clinical history of 450 VLBW newborns admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit. After applying the relevant exclusion criteria, data for 389 VLBW infants were analysed, of whom 159 developed some degree of BPD. Among the newborns with BPD, energy and lipid intake was significantly lower and fluid intake was significantly higher. The energy intake for the 25th percentile in the group without BPD was 1778·2 kJ/kg during the first week of life. An energy intake <1778·2 kJ/kg in this period was associated with a 2-fold increase in the adjusted risk of BPD (OR 2·63, 95 % CI 1·30, 5·34). The early nutrition and the increase of energy intake in the first week of life are associated in our sample with a lower risk of BPD developing.

RESUMEN

(Amino)cyclotriphosphazenes have been used as new scaffolds for the synthesis of silver(I) metallomesogens. Two cyclotriphosphazenes, [N3P3(NHCy)6] (phos-1) and nongem-trans-[N3P3(NHCy)3(NMe2)3] (phos-2), were reacted with the silver complex having a pro-mesogenic ligand, [Ag(OTf)L] (L = CNC6H4{OC(O)C6H2(3,4,5-(OC10H21)3)}-4; OTf = OSO2CF3), in different molar ratios, 1:1, 1:2, or 1:3, to give two series of cationic metallophosphazenes, [N3P3(NHCy)6{AgL}n](TfO)n (phos-1.n) and nongem-trans-[N3P3(NHCy)3(NMe2)3{AgL}n](TfO)n (phos-2.n) with n = 1, 2, or 3. The chemical structure of these compounds, deduced from spectroscopic techniques, was in accordance with coordination of the silver fragments "AgL" to nitrogen atoms of the phosphazene ring, whereby their number n depends on the molar ratio used. Despite the presence of the bulky substituents on the core N atoms, cyclotriphosphazenes coordinated to three "AgL" units exhibited mesomorphism at room temperature. The mesophase was characterized as columnar hexagonal according to the optical microscopy and X-ray diffraction studies. A model based on an intermolecular association in pairs of the metallocyclotriphosphazenes having three AgL units has been proposed in order to explain the mesomorphic columnar arrangement in these materials. Starting silver complex, [Ag(OTf)L], also exhibited a columnar hexagonal mesophase at room temperature.

RESUMEN

Oliver, GS, Julio, TF, Moras, G, José Luis, AS, and Alberto, MV. A repeated power training enhances fatigue resistance while reducing intraset fluctuations. J Strength Cond Res 33(10): 2711-2721, 2019-The present study analyzed the effects of adding upper-body repeated power ability (RPA) training to habitual strength training sessions. Twenty young elite male basketball players were randomly allocated into a control group (CON, n = 10) or repeated power group (RPG, n = 10) and evaluated by 1 repetition maximum (1RM), incremental load, and RPA tests in the bench press exercise before and after a 7-week period and a 4-week cessation period. Repeated power group performed 1-3 blocks of 5 sets of 5 repetitions using the load that maximized power output with 30 seconds and 3 minute of passive recovery between sets and blocks, respectively. Between-group analysis showed substantial greater improvements in RPG compared with CON in: best set (APB), last set (APL), mean power over 5 sets (APM), percentage of decrement, fluctuation decrease during APL and RPA index (APLpost/APBpre) during the RPA test (effect size [ES] = 0.64-1.86), and 1RM (ES = 0.48) and average power at 80% of 1RM (ES = 1.11) in the incremental load test. The improvements of APB and APM were almost perfectly correlated. In conclusion, RPA training represents an effective method to mainly improve fatigue resistance together with the novel finding of a better consistency in performance (measured as reduced intraset power fluctuations) at the end of a dynamic repeated effort.

RESUMEN

Computational and experimental studies unravel the structural and electronic properties of a novel supramolecular liquid crystal built through a hierarchical assembly process resulting in an H-bonded melamine rosette decorated with peripheral triphenylenes. The six-fold symmetry of the mesogen facilitates the formation of a highly organized hexagonal columnar mesophase stable at room temperature. X-ray diffraction and electron density maps confirm additional intra- and intercolumn segregation of functional subunits, and this paves the way for 1D charge transport. Indeed, hole mobility has been measured and found to be higher than for related mesogens. DFT calculations of HOMO and LUMO levels and parameters such as reorganization energy and transfer integral of the rosette structure have been achieved, and not only validate the columnar organization but also establish the way it translates into a favorable electronic architecture and molecular orbital interactions to promote charge carrier mobility.

RESUMEN

Three cyclic trinuclear pyrazolate complexes with Au(I), Ag(I), or Cu(I) have been studied. These complexes have interesting and distinct optical and thermal properties depending on the metal, namely, liquid crystalline behavior, red or deep-red phosphorescence at room temperature, thermoluminochromism, and response to silver ions. The selected ligand, 4-hexyl-3,5-dimethylpyrazolate, maximizes the effect that the nature of the metals has on the properties of the complexes, thus allowing the intermolecular metallophilic interactions to be responsible for the optical properties. Moreover, the gold and silver complexes show columnar liquid crystal phases at high temperature. All of the complexes have good solubility properties for processing as poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) doped films. Films of the gold, silver, and copper complexes show interesting optical behavior such as wide-range color switching or phosphorescence turn-on upon cooling. In addition, films of the gold complex show a bright color switching (red to blue) in the presence of silver ions. The gold and copper complexes are bright phosphors with phosphorescent quantum yields of 90% in PMMA films, the highest values reported for this class of compounds at room temperature.

RESUMEN

Studies in humans with Down syndrome (DS) show that alterations in fetal brain development are followed by postnatal deficits in neuronal numbers, synaptic plasticity, and cognitive and motor function. This same progression is replicated in several mouse models of DS. Dp(16)1Yey/+ (hereafter called Dp16) is a recently developed mouse model of DS in which the entire region of mouse chromosome 16 that is homologous to human chromosome 21 has been triplicated. As such, Dp16 mice may more closely reproduce neurodevelopmental changes occurring in humans with DS. Here, we present the first comprehensive cellular and behavioral study of the Dp16 forebrain from embryonic to adult stages. Unexpectedly, our results demonstrate that Dp16 mice do not have prenatal brain defects previously reported in human fetal neocortex and in the developing forebrains of other mouse models, including microcephaly, reduced neurogenesis, and abnormal cell proliferation. Nevertheless, we found impairments in postnatal developmental milestones, fewer inhibitory forebrain neurons, and deficits in motor and cognitive performance in Dp16 mice. Therefore, although this new model does not express prenatal morphological phenotypes associated with DS, abnormalities in the postnatal period appear sufficient to produce significant cognitive deficits in Dp16.

RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: Psoriasis is a common chronic inflammatory skin disease. Ocular manifestations, which occur in 10% to 20% of cases of psoriasis, are usually bilateral and often present during an exacerbation of the psoriasis. Serious corneal involvement is rare but can be devastating. CASE REPORT: Two cases of sterile corneal infiltrates secondary to an exacerbation of psoriasis are presented. Treatment involved the use of 0.02% topical tacrolimus ointment, which resulted in resolution of the symptoms and infiltrates. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: Topical tacrolimus may be considered as an alternative treatment option to corticosteroids in sterile corneal infiltrates.

RESUMEN

We report a new family of multifunctional liquid-crystalline porphyrin-core dendrimers that have coumarin functional groups around the porphyrin core. Porphyrin metalation strongly affects the photophysical properties, and therefore ZnII and CuII derivatives have also been prepared. All the synthesized dendrimers form a nematic discotic mesophase. Their high tendency for homeotropic alignment makes these dendrimers excellent candidates for device applications, owing to their easy processability, spontaneous alignment between electrodes, and self-healing of defects because of their dynamic nature. The charge mobility values of these materials are the highest ever reported for a nematic discotic phase. Moreover, these values are similar to the highest values reported for ordered columnar mesophases, and this shows that a supramolecular organization in columns is not necessary to achieve high charge mobility.

RESUMEN

A novel approach to ambipolar semiconductors based on hydrogen-bonded complexes between a star-shaped tris(triazolyl)triazine and triphenylene-containing benzoic acids is described. The formation of 1:3 supramolecular complexes was evidenced by different techniques. Mesogenic driving forces played a decisive role in the formation of the hydrogen-bonded complexes in the bulk. All of the complexes formed by nonmesogenic components gave rise to hexagonal columnar (Colh) liquid crystal phases, which are stable at room temperature. In all cases, X-ray diffraction experiments supported by electron density distribution maps confirmed triphenylene/tris(triazolyl)triazine segregation into hexagonal sublattices and lattices, respectively, as well as remarkable intracolumnar order. These highly ordered nanostructures, obtained by the combined supramolecular H-bond/columnar liquid crystal approach, yielded donor/acceptor coaxial organization that is promising for the formation of ambipolar organic semiconductors with high mobilities, as indicated by charge transport measurements.

RESUMEN

A straightforward synthesis of mesogenic pyrazoles starting from benzaldehydes by a combination of efficient Henry and Michael reactions led to novel supramolecular liquid crystals. The mesogens are fluorescent 3,5-dimethyl-4-(di or trialkoxyphenyl)pyrazoles and, in spite of the tapered shape of these molecules and their structural simplicity (only one phenyl ring), columnar liquid-crystal phases were formed that are stable at room temperature. The self-assembled structure was studied by XRD and the columnar cross section contains two molecules on average with an antiparallel arrangement of pyrazoles interacting through hydrogen bonds. In contrast, the single-crystal structure of a trimethoxy analog did not show hydrogen-bonded pyrazoles but chains of head-to-tail arranged molecules.

RESUMEN

A broadly applicable catalyst system consisting of water-soluble Pd--imidate complexes has been enployed for the Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling of four different nucleosides in water under mild conditions. The efficient nature of the catalyst system also allowed its application in developing a microwave-assisted protocol with the purpose of expediting the catalytic reaction. Preliminary mechanistic studies, assisted by catalyst poison tests and stoichiometric tests performed using an electrospray ionization spectrometer, revealed the possible presence of a homotopic catalyst system.

RESUMEN

A star-shaped tris(triazolyl)triazine is shown to establish hydrogen-bond interactions with polycatenar benzoic acids. The formation of hydrogen-bonded triazine/acid complexes has been demonstrated both in solution and in bulk by different techniques. The complexes, mainly formed by nonmesogenic components, all show enantiotropic hexagonal columnar mesomorphism, which relies on the formation of hydrogen-bond complexes in a triazine/acid ratio of 1:3. This approach combines the straightforward synthesis of a nonmesomorphic triazine core by click chemistry, and the preparation of a supramolecular complex, providing a much more convenient route than covalent synthesis to modify the periphery of triazine discotics and thus to modulate their functionality.

RESUMEN

The synthesis and characterisation of a family of block codendrimers consisting of highly versatile mesogenic and carbazole-containing 2,2-bis(hydroxymethyl)propionic acid (bis-MPA) dendrons are reported. The liquid-crystal behaviour was investigated by means of differential scanning calorimetry, polarised-light optical microscopy and X-ray diffraction. Depending on the chemical structure of the constituent dendrons, the codendrimers show lamellar or columnar mesophases. On the basis of the experimental results, models both at the molecular level and in the mesophase are proposed. The physical properties of the block codendrimers derived from the presence of the carbazole moiety in their structure were investigated: photoluminescence in solution and in the mesophase, electrochemical behaviour and hole transport. Electrodeposition of carbazole dendrons afforded a globular supramolecular conformation in which the mesogenic molecular side plays a key role.

RESUMEN

AIM: An epidemiological cross-sectional study was conducted to evaluate the association between cutaneous melanoma, Hodgkin's lymphoma and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in 40 European countries. METHODS: Incidence rates were obtained from the database of the International Agency for Research of Cancer (IARC). We analyzed age-adjusted and gender-stratified incidence rates for cutaneous melanoma, Hodgkin's lymphoma and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in 40 European countries. All European countries included had registration systems that fulfilled the quality criteria of IARC. Normal distribution of the variables was examined using Kolmorov-Smirnov test before calculating their correlations using Pearson's Correlation test. RESULTS: In males, positive correlations were found between cutaneous melanoma, Hodgkin's lymphoma (r=0.14, p=0.38), and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (r=0.64, p<0.001). In females, negative correlation was found between cutaneous melanoma and Hodgkin's lymphoma (r=0.28, p=0.08), however, positive correlation was found between cutaneous melanoma and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (r=0.72, p<0.001). CONCLUSION: Our findings raise the hypothesis about common risk factors for cutaneous melanoma and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. New epidemiological and genetic studies are needed to identify possible common risk factors.
