RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: This study investigated the association between handgrip strength (HGS) and physical activity (PA) at different levels in Korean adults for the purpose of providing direction for increasing HGS, which represents muscular strength, and increasing understanding of PA and HGS. METHODS: This study targeted adults aged ≥30 years from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2014-2019), including 31,888 participants for analysis. HGS was defined as the maximum value of the three measurements of the dominant hand. PA was defined as an activity that causes shortness of breath or a fast heartbeat. Data were weighted according to survey district and household data; p < .05 was considered statistically significant. RESULTS: In men, HGS in those aged 30-64 years was significantly associated with high-intensity PA and in those aged ≥65 years was associated with moderate-intensity PA. In women, HGS in those aged 30-64 years was also significantly associated with high-intensity PA, and in those aged ≥65 years, it was significantly associated with both moderate- and high-intensity PA. Moreover, compared to participants who did not participate in weight training, those who participated showed higher HGS in both sexes. CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrated age- and sex-specific characteristics of the association between HGS and PA in Koreans. The findings suggest the importance of managing health by considering differences in age- and sex-related PA. In particular, this study suggests that adequate PA is necessary despite its importance of PA for elderly individuals.

RESUMEN

Emulsion systems are widely used in various industries, including the cosmetic, pharmaceutical, and food industries, because they require emulsifiers to stabilize the inherently unstable contact between oil and water. Although emulsifiers are included in many products, excessive use of emulsifiers destroys skin barriers and causes contact dermatitis. Accordingly, the consumer demand for cosmetic products made from natural ingredients with biocompatibility and biodegradability has increased. Starch in the form of solid nanosized particles is considered an attractive emulsifier that forms and stabilizes Pickering emulsion. Chemical modification of nanosized starch via acid hydrolysis can effectively provide higher emulsion stability. However, typical acid hydrolysis limits the industrial application of starch due to its high time consumption and low recovery. In previous studies, the effects of starch nanoparticles (SNPs) prepared by treatment with acidic dry heat, which overcomes these limitations, on the formation and stability of Pickering emulsions were reported. In this study, we evaluated the safety of SNPs in skin cell lines, 3D cultured skin, and human skin. We found that the cytotoxicity of SNPs in both HaCaT cells and HDF cells could be controlled by neutralization. We also observed that SNPs did not induce structural abnormalities on 3D cultured skin and did not permeate across micropig skin tissue or human skin membranes. Furthermore, patches loaded with SNPs were found to belong in the "No irritation" category because they did not cause any irritation when placed on human skin. Overall, the study results suggest that SNPs can be used as a safe emulsifier in various industries, including in cosmetics.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The definition of community health outreach to promote the health of vulnerable populations depends heavily on the particulars of the given health project and community. There is no consistency in the definitions attached to the concept itself. Our study aimed to clarify the general definition of community health outreach to facilitate its understanding and use. METHODS: Walker and Avant's (2010) method of concept analysis was used to understand community health outreach. A total of 45 articles were included in the analysis after having searched for text on database portals like PubMed, Scopus, CINAHL complete and EMBASE published between 2010 and 2018. RESULTS: The defining attributes of the concept of community health outreach were purposive, temporary, mobile and collaboration with community. The antecedents were population facing health risks and awareness of health risks. The consequences were increased accessibility and health promotion. CONCLUSION: This study proposed the definition of community health outreach as a temporary, mobile project that involves the collaboration of a community to undertake its purposeful health intervention of reaching a population facing health risks. This definition provides a general understanding of the outreach undertaken by health workers and enables the strong connection between health professionals and community residents.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have reported the association of HK2 and NCK2 genes with normal-tension glaucoma (NTG) in Japan, but there has been no follow-up study in other countries, so the relevance of these genes to NTG appears uncertain at present. Thus, we investigated the relationship between the HK2 and NCK2 genes and NTG in a Korean NTG cohort. METHODS: In total, 154 unrelated Korean patients with NTG and 101 normal Korean controls were recruited. Thus, a total of 255 participants were analyzed for NCK2 (rs2033008) and HK2 (rs678350) gene polymorphisms. RESULTS: The minor allele frequency (MAF) of rs678350 was significantly higher in NTG patients (MAF = 0.32) than in controls (MAF = 0.23) (OR, 1.586; 95% CI, 1.058 to 2.375; P = 0.028). This trend was more significant in the dominant model (OR, 1.908; 95% CI, 1.144 to 3.180; P = 0.015). When we performed logistic regression analysis to adjust for age, both the allelic and dominant models were still statistically significant. No significant difference was observed in rs2033008 allele or genotype frequencies between the NTG patients and control subjects. CONCLUSIONS: The current study suggested that HK2 gene polymorphism may contribute to the genetic susceptibility to NTG.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: To report long-term surgical outcomes of Cutler-Beard reconstructive surgery in patients with large full-thickness upper eyelid defects following malignant tumor excision. METHODS: The medical records of 5 consecutive patients with full-thickness upper eyelid defects following tumor resection who underwent Cutler-Beard surgery were reviewed retrospectively between April 2005 and November 2018. Surgical procedure comprises 2 stages: first, complete tumor resection followed by bridged full-thickness lower eyelid advancement flap; second, separation of the closed eyelid with eyelid margin repair 7 to 9 weeks later. Postoperative anatomical, functional and cosmetic outcomes, and complications were evaluated during follow-up at 22 to 77 months. RESULTS: Patients were in the age group of 49 to 75 years, including 3 (60%) females and 2 (40%) males. Three of the 5 patients (60%) exhibited sebaceous cell carcinoma and 2 (40%) showed squamous cell carcinoma. Three patients (60%) underwent Cutler-Beard surgery after recurrence of primary carcinoma following previous operation. Three patients underwent revision surgery with entropion, 2 underwent correction for wound dehiscence and 1 was treated with symblepharon lysis. No serious or permanent ocular complications were observed during the operation or follow-up with the patients. The procedure resulted in good aesthetic quality and acceptable sequelae at the donor site. CONCLUSIONS: Cutler-Beard procedure for the reconstruction of large and full-thickness upper eyelid defects is an effective procedure with satisfactory long-term results, although a few patients may require minor revision surgery.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Identifying preferences for stool collection devices may help increase uptake rates for colorectal cancer screening via fecal immunochemical test (FIT). This study surveyed satisfaction with different devices utilized to collect stool samples for FIT: a conventional container and a sampling bottle (Eiken OC-Sensor). METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted at the National Cancer Center, Korea. Participants aged 50-74 years who used either a conventional container or a sampling bottle to collect a stool sample for FIT were asked to complete a questionnaire designed to survey their satisfaction with the stool collection process and their intentions to undergo FIT in subsequent screening rounds. In total, 1657 participants (1224 conventional container, 433 sampling bottle) were included for analysis. RESULTS: Satisfaction with the sampling bottle was higher than that with the conventional container (79.9% vs.73.0%, p = 0.005, respectively; aOR = 1.52, 95% CI: 1.16-2.00). Participants satisfied with the sampling bottle were more likely to be female, be of younger age (50-64 years old), have higher household income, and have prior experience with FIT. Intentions to undergo subsequent screening were stronger among those given the sampling bottle than those given the conventional container (aOR = 1.78, 95% CI: 1.28-2 .48). CONCLUSIONS: Satisfaction with the stool collection process was higher with the sampling bottle. However, additional studies are needed to validate whether the increased satisfaction and stronger intentions to undergo subsequent screening with the sampling bottle could actually lead to increased uptake in subsequent rounds, along with analysis of the device's cost effectiveness.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Physician recommendations for colorectal cancer (CRC) screening have consistently been shown to be a strong predictor of screening. The aim of this study was to investigate perceptions of CRC screening modalities and recommendation behaviors among physicians in Korea. METHODS: A cross-sectional, nationally representative survey conducted between November 2013 and February 2014. In total, 379 physicians (241 primary care physicians and 138 physicians affiliated with the Korean Association for the Study of Intestinal Diseases responded to this survey (overall response rate of 31.4%). RESULTS: About 29% of all respondents "always" recommended and about 67% "sometimes" recommended CRC screening. Colonoscopy was perceived as an effective primary screening tool for CRC, and 80% of the physicians recommended colonoscopy for CRC screening. Only 7% recommended FOBT. In multivariate analysis, recommending FOBT was associated with stronger belief in the screening efficacy of FOBT (aOR 3.70, 95% CI 2.09, 6.57), weaker belief in the screening efficacy of colonoscopy (aOR 0.29, 95% CI 0.12, 0.69), and negative decisional balance for colonoscopy screening (aOR 0.82, 95% CI 0.71, 0.95). CONCLUSIONS: Although FOBT is provided free-of-charge through a nationwide CRC screening program, colonoscopy was more commonly recommended and preferred by physicians.

RESUMEN

Several studies have sought systematically to identify protein subcellular locations, but an even larger task is to map which of these proteins conditionally relocates in disease (the mislocalizome). Here, we report an integrative computational framework for mapping conditional location and mislocation of proteins on a proteome-wide scale, called a conditional location predictor (CoLP). Using CoLP, we mapped the locations of over 10,000 proteins in normal human brain and in glioma. The prediction showed 0.9 accuracy using 100 location tests of 20 randomly selected proteins. Of the 10,000 proteins, over 150 have a strong likelihood of mislocation under glioma, which is striking considering that few mislocation events have been identified in this disease previously. Using immunofluorescence and Western blotting in both primary cells and tissues, we successfully experimentally confirmed 15 mislocations. The most common type of mislocation occurs between the endoplasmic reticulum and the nucleus; for example, for RNF138, TLX3, and NFRKB. In particular, we found that the gene for the mislocating protein GFRA4 had a nonsynonymous point mutation in exon 2. Moreover, redirection of GFRA4 to its normal location, the plasma membrane, led to marked reductions in phospho-STAT3 and proliferation of glioma cells. This framework has the potential to track changes in protein location in many human diseases.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether the ganglion cell-inner plexiform layer (GCIPL) or circumpapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (cpRNFL) is better at distinguishing eyes with early glaucoma from normal eyes on the basis of the the initial location of the visual field (VF) damage. DESIGN: Retrospective, observational study. PARTICIPANTS: Eighty-four patients with early glaucoma and 43 normal subjects were enrolled. The patients with glaucoma were subdivided into 2 groups according to the location of VF damage: (1) an isolated parafoveal scotoma (PFS, N = 42) within 12 points of a central 10 degrees in 1 hemifield or (2) an isolated peripheral nasal step (PNS, N = 42) within the nasal periphery outside 10 degrees of fixation in 1 hemifield. METHODS: All patients underwent macular and optic disc scanning using Cirrus high-definition optical coherence tomography (Carl Zeiss Meditec, Dublin, CA). The GCIPL and cpRNFL thicknesses were compared between groups. Areas under the receiver operating characteristic curves (AUCs) were calculated. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Comparison of diagnostic ability using AUCs. RESULTS: The average and minimum GCIPL of the PFS group were significantly thinner than those of the PNS group, whereas there was no significant difference in the average retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness between the 2 groups. The AUCs of the average (0.962) and minimum GCIPL (0.973) thicknesses did not differ from that of the average RNFL thickness (0.972) for discriminating glaucomatous changes between normal and all glaucoma eyes (P =0.566 and 0.974, respectively). In the PFS group, the AUCs of the average (0.988) and minimum GCIPL (0.999) thicknesses were greater than that of the average RNFL thickness (0.961, P =0.307 and 0.125, respectively). However, the AUCs of the average (0.936) and minimum GCIPL (0.947) thicknesses were lower than that of the average RNFL thickness (0.984) in the PNS group (P =0.032 and 0.069, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: The GCIPL parameters were more valuable than the cpRNFL parameters for detecting glaucoma in eyes with parafoveal VF loss, and the cpRNFL parameters were better than the GCIPL parameters for detecting glaucoma in eyes with peripheral VF loss. Clinicians should know that the diagnostic capability of macular GCIPL parameters depends largely on the location of the VF loss.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: To compare the initial visual field (VF) defect pattern and the spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (OCT) parameters and investigate the effects of distinct types of optic disc damage on the diagnostic performance of these OCT parameters in early glaucoma. DESIGN: Retrospective, observational study. PARTICIPANTS: A total of 138 control eyes and 160 eyes with early glaucoma were enrolled. The glaucomatous eyes were subdivided into 4 groups according to the type of optic disc damage: focal ischemic (FI) group, myopic (MY) group, senile sclerotic (SS) group, and generalized enlargement (GE) group. METHODS: The values of total deviation (TD) maps were analyzed, and superior-inferior (S-I) differences of TD were calculated. The optic nerve head (ONH) parameters, peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (pRNFL), and ganglion cell-inner plexiform layer (GCIPL) thicknesses were measured. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Comparison of diagnostic ability using area under the receiver operating characteristic curves (AUCs). RESULTS: The S-I and central S-I difference of the FI group were larger than those of the GE group. The rim area of the SS group was larger than those of the 3 other groups, and the vertical cup-to-disc ratio (CDR) of the GE group was larger than that of the MY group. In addition, the minimum and inferotemporal GCIPL thicknesses of the FI group were smaller than those of the GE group. The AUC of the rim area (0.89) was lower than that of the minimum GCIPL (0.99) in the SS group, and the AUC of the vertical CDR (0.90) was lower than that of the minimum GCIPL (0.99) in the MY group. Furthermore, the AUCs of the minimum GCIPL thicknesses of the FI and MY group were greater than those of the average pRNFL thickness for detecting glaucoma, as opposed to the SS and GE. CONCLUSIONS: The OCT parameters differed among the 4 groups on the basis of the distinct optic disc appearance and initial glaucomatous damage pattern. Clinicians should be aware that the diagnostic capability of OCT parameters could differ according to the type of optic disc damage in early glaucoma.

RESUMEN

The aim of this work is to compare the thinning patterns of the ganglion cell inner-plexiform layer (GCIPL) and peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (pRNFL) as measured using Cirrus high-definition optical coherence tomography (HD-OCT) in patients with visual field (VF) defects that respect the vertical meridian. Twenty eyes of 11 patients with VF defects that respect the vertical meridian were enrolled retrospectively. The thicknesses of the macular GCIPL and pRNFL were measured using Cirrus HD-OCT. The 5 and 1% thinning area index (TAI) was calculated as the proportion of abnormally thin sectors at the 5 and 1% probability level within the area corresponding to the affected VF. The 5 and 1% TAI were compared between the GCIPL and pRNFL measurements. The color-coded GCIPL deviation map showed a characteristic vertical thinning pattern of the GCIPL, which is also seen in the VF of patients with brain lesions. The 5 and 1% TAI were significantly higher in the GCIPL measurements than in the pRNFL measurements (all p < 0.01). Macular GCIPL analysis clearly visualized a characteristic topographic pattern of retinal ganglion cell (RGC) loss in patients with VF defects that respect the vertical meridian, unlike pRNFL measurements. Macular GCIPL measurements provide more valuable information than pRNFL measurements for detecting the loss of RGCs in patients with retrograde degeneration of the optic nerve fibers.

RESUMEN

Glaucoma, particularly primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG), poses a significant global health concern. Distinguished by intraocular pressure (IOP), POAG encompasses high-tension glaucoma (HTG) and normal-tension glaucoma (NTG). Apolipoprotein E (APOE) is a multifaceted protein with roles in lipid metabolism, neurobiology, and neurodegenerative diseases. However, controversies persist regarding the impact of APOE single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) on open-angle glaucoma and NTG. This study aimed to identify APOE-specific SNPs influencing NTG risk. A cohort of 178 patients with NTG recruited from Uijeongbu St. Mary's Hospital and 32,858 individuals from the Korean Genome and Epidemiology Study (KoGES) cohort were included in the analysis. Genotype and haplotype analyses were performed on three promoter SNPs (rs449647, rs769446, and rs405509) and two exonic SNPs (rs429358 and rs7412) located on chromosome 19. Among the five SNPs, rs769446 genotypes exhibited significant differences between cases and controls. The minor allele C of rs769446 emerged as a protective factor against NTG. Furthermore, haplotype analysis of the five SNPs revealed that the A-T-G-T-T haplotype was a statistically significant risk factor for NTG. This study indicated an association between APOE promoter SNPs and NTG in the Korean population. Further studies are required to understand how APOE promoter SNPs contribute to NTG pathogenesis.

RESUMEN

Diabetes mellitus and dyslipidemia are well-known risk factors for cardiovascular disease. Unfortunately, the prevalence of dyslipidemia and diabetes mellitus among individuals over 30 years of age in Korea has continuously increased. The current study therefore investigated the association between dyslipidemia and high glycated hemoglobin (Hemoglobin A1c, HbA1c) levels according to age group in adults over 20 years old. We used data from the 7th Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey conducted by the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention from 2016 to 2017. Glycated hemoglobin, a well-established marker for elevated glucose levels, was categorized into three groups, normal (<5.7%), prediabetes (5.7-6.4%), and diabetes (≥6.5%). The presence of dyslipidemia was defined based on a diagnosis of dyslipidemia by a physician. Logistic regression analyses were performed to evaluate the association between the prevalence of dyslipidemia and glycated hemoglobin according to age group. After adjusting for possible confounders, including age, sex, body mass index, marital status, education, occupation, household income, drinking, and smoking, we found a significant increase in the odds ratios (ORs) for dyslipidemia in the prediabetes (OR; 1.915, 95% CI; 1.696 to 2.163) and diabetes (OR; 3.533, 95% CI; 3.019 to 4.134) groups. Among subjects with higher glycated hemoglobin levels, those in their 40s or over had significantly increased odds for dyslipidemia. The current study found an association between high glycated hemoglobin levels and a diagnosis of dyslipidemia among Korean adults. Markers of lipid metabolism in adults with high glycated hemoglobin levels may need to be monitored, especially those in their 40s and older.

RESUMEN

To enhance stability and bioaccessibility of curcumin in Pickering emulsions stabilized by starch nanoparticles (SNP), cationized guar gum (CGG) was incorporated into the emulsion. Zeta potential results revealed that SNP and CGG formed electrostatic interactions, resulting in stable interfacial layer with higher hydrophobicity. Adding 0.4 % CGG maintained a homogeneous phase without significant droplet size change for up to one month. The emulsion with 0.4 % CGG demonstrated stable storage under varying pH (4-10), ionic strength (0-10 mM NaCl), and freeze-thaw cycles (up to 3). When optimized Pickering emulsion system was applied to curcumin encapsulation, curcumin-loaded emulsions were stably maintained for up to one month. The curcumin retained approximately 100 % stability under thermal (90 °C) and UV (12h) treatments. In the optimized emulsion, starch components resisted digestion in oral and gastroenteric phases but were primarily digested in small intestine, resulting in an increasing bioaccessibility from 88.23 to 96.92 %.

RESUMEN

To evaluate the effect of elaborate difference in the hydrophobicity of core material on encapsulation process and physicochemical properties of the composites, composites of starch and FA with various chain lengths (C:12-22) were prepared via nanoprecipitation. X-ray diffraction analyses revealed that all composites had a Vh-amylose crystalline unit cell, but the chain length of FA did not induce a clear change in crystallinity or the hydrodynamic mean diameter of the composites. As the chain length of FA increased from 12 to 22, FA content in the composites increased from 1.69 to 14.85 mg/g composite. The absorption analyses of Rose Bengal on the composite surfaces revealed that their hydrophobicity increased with increasing chain length of FA. The incorporation of FA enhanced the emulsification activity of the composites, and this result revealed that the composites could be applied as an emulsification agent. For longer FA, composite storage stability increased, but the release of FA by in vitro digestion was delayed.

RESUMEN

PRCIS: We demonstrated that SIX1/SIX6 locus polymorphism (rs10483727 and rs33912345) was significantly associated with a genetic susceptibility to NTG in a Korean population. More studies are needed to investigate whether the SIX1/SIX6 locus is associated with NTG among various ethnic populations. PURPOSE: Several previous studies have reported that the relevance of the SIX1/SIX6 locus to open angle glaucoma (OAG) in various ethnic populations. However, definitions of OAG patients were different among those studies. The relevance of the SIX1/SIX6 locus to normal tension glaucoma (NTG) in a Korean population remains uncertain. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship of the SIX1/SIX6 locus with NTG in a Korean cohort. METHOD: Patients with NTG and ethnically matched healthy controls were recruited from eye clinics in Korea (210 cases and 117 controls). Four polymorphisms (rs33912345, rs12436579, rs2179970, and rs10483727) of the SIX1/SIX6 locus were genotyped for 327 subjects using a TaqMan single nucleotide polymorphism genotyping assay. RESULTS: The rs33912345 polymorphism was significantly correlated with NTG in the recessive model [odds ratio (OR): 0.265; 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.078-0.898, P =0.033], but not in the allelic and dominant models (both P >0.05). The SNP rs10483727 was significantly associated with NTG in the allelic model (OR: 0.674; 95% CI: 0.464-0.979, P =0.038) and the recessive model (OR: 0.187; 95% CI: 0.058-0.602, P =0.005). Genetic association analysis of SNP rs12436579 and rs2179970 revealed no significant difference in genotype distribution between NTG cases and controls in the allelic, dominant, or recessive models (all P >0.05). CONCLUSION: The current study found that SIX1-SIX6 locus rs10483727 and rs33912345 polymorphisms were significantly associated with NTG risk in the Korean population.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: Sexual activity is an important integrative behaviour that interacts with biological, psychological and social factors among various changes in adolescence. However, starting sex at an early age is associated with adverse outcomes. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the factors associated with adolescents' sexual experience based on the biopsychosocial model. DESIGN: A cross-sectional study. SETTING: The participants were selceted through a complex sample design at high schools and middle schools nationwide in Korea. PARTICIPANTS: We employed 4-year data (2017-2020) of the cross-sectional Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey. In total, 234567 participants attending middle school and high school were analysed. Sexual experience was defined as having had sexual intercourse (oral, anal or vaginal) in their lifetime. To identify variables associated with adolescents' sexual experiences, we used a biopsychosocial model. Logistic regression analysis was performed to identify the variables associated with sexual experience. RESULTS: 3.4% of boys and 1.6% of girls attending middle school had sexual experiences, showing a significant difference. A total of 10.4% of boys and 5.1% of girls attending high school had sexual experiences (p<0.001). Among the biological factors of the biopsychosocial model, age and gender were significantly associated with sexual experiences in adolescents. Regarding the psychological factors, suicidal thoughts were a significant risk factor associated with sexual experience. Furthermore, social factors including drinking, smoking and family structure were associated with sexual experience in adolescents. Particularly, a significantly higher sexual experience was found in the three groups living with a single parent, step-parents and no parents compared with the group living with both parents in family structure. CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrated the factors associated with adolescents' sexual experience based on the biopsychosocial model. Further research and policy strategies that consider supporting family communication and mental health and preventing substance use are required to prevent adolescents' sexual health.

RESUMEN

Previous studies have reported the association of the SIX1/SIX6 locus with open-angle glaucoma in various ethnic populations. However, the relevance of the SIX1/SIX6 locus to pseudoexfoliation syndrome (XFS) appears uncertain at present. Thus, we investigated the relationship between polymorphisms in the SIX1/SIX6 locus and XFS in a Korean XFS cohort. A total of 246 participants comprising 167 unrelated Korean patients with XFS and 79 ethnically matched control subjects were recruited. Four polymorphisms of the SIX1/SIX6 locus (rs33912345, rs12436579, rs2179970, and rs10483727) were genotyped using a TaqMan® allelic discrimination assay. Genotypic and allelic associations were analyzed using logistic regression. The minor allele frequency (MAF) of rs33912345 was found to be 0.287 and 0.247 in the XFS cases and controls, respectively, and the MAF of rs12436579 was found to be 0.383 and 0.361 in the XFS cases and control subjects, respectively. The MAF of rs2179970 was found to be 0.090 and 0.095 in the XFS cases and control subjects, respectively, and the MAF of rs10483727 was found to be 0.293 and 0.253 in the XFS cases and control subjects, respectively. Genetic association analysis of 4 SIX1/SIX6 locus single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) revealed no significant difference in genotype distribution between the XFS cases and control subjects in the allelic, dominant, or recessive models (all, P > .05). The current study suggested that SIX1/SIX6 locus polymorphisms (rs33912345, rs12436579, rs2179970, and rs10483727) may not be associated with a genetic susceptibility to XFS in a Korean cohort.

RESUMEN

This study aimed to identify the decisional stages for cervical screening and corresponding cognitive factors in female university students. A cross-sectional study was conducted among Korean female university students aged 20-29 years through an online survey. The main outcome was the decisional stage of cervical screening adoption using the precaution adoption process model. The stages were classified into pre-adoption (the unawareness, unengaged, and undecided stages), adoption (the decided to act and acting stages), and refusal (the decided not to act stage). The cognitive factors in each stage were analyzed using the key concepts of the health-belief model. Cervical screening was defined as a clinical Papanicolaou (Pap) smear performed by a physician in a clinic. The final analysis included 1024 students. Approximately 89.0%, 1.0%, and 10.2% were classified as the pre-adoption, refusal, and adoption stages, respectively. Compared to the pre-adoption stage group, the adoption stage group was more likely to be older and have higher self-efficacy and knowledge. Most participants belonged to the pre-adoption stage-those unaware of cervical screening. Furthermore, most had a low level of knowledge and perception of cervical cancer and its screening. Therefore, our study highlighted the need for education to increase awareness and knowledge of cervical screening in this population.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to compare neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratios (NLRs) of patients with pseudoexfoliation syndrome (PEX) according to the presence of cardiovascular disease (CVD) with those without CVD as controls. METHODS: A total of 197 participants (97 patients with PEX and 100 participants without PEX regarded as the control group) were included in this retrospective study. The PEX group was divided into 2 subgroups, PEX with CVD (group 1) and PEX without CVD (group 2). NLRs were then compared to those of the control group. RESULTS: The incidence of CVD was significantly (P = .015) higher in the PEX group than in the control group. NLR was significantly higher in the group 1 and group 2 compared with that of the control group (P = .048 and P = .002, respectively). In the PEX group, group 1 showed higher NLR than group 2 (P = .023). CONCLUSION: Although the PEX group showed a higher incidence of CVD, the NLR was higher in the PEX group regardless of cardiovascular comorbidity than that in the control group.
