RESUMEN

Three novel heterometallic Ni/Cd coordination compounds [Ni(en)3][CdCl4]∙3dmso (1), [Ni(en)2(dmf)2][CdBr4] (2), and [Ni(en)3]2[CdI4](I)2 (3) have been synthesized through the self-assembly process in a one-pot reaction of cadmium oxide, nickel salt (or nickel powder), NH4X (X = Cl, Br, I), and ethylenediamine in non-aqueous solvents dmso (for 1) or dmf (for 2 and 3). Formation of the one- (1) or three-dimensional (2 and 3) hydrogen-bonded frameworks has been observed depending on the nature of the [CdX4]2- counter-anion, as well as on the nature of the solvent. The electronic structures of [Ni(en)3]2+ and [Ni(en)2(dmf)2]2+ cations were studied at the DFT and CASSCF levels, including the ab initio ligand field theory (AILFT) calculations. The non-covalent intermolecular contacts between the cationic nickel and anionic cadmium blocks in the solid state were investigated by the QTAIM analysis. The mechanism of ligand substitution at the nickel center in [Ni(en)2(dmf)2]2+ was theoretically investigated at the ωB97X-D4/ma-def2-TZVP//DLPNO-CCSD(T)/ma-def2-TZVPP level. The results demonstrate that thermodynamic factors are structure-determining ones due to low energy barriers of the rotation of dmf ligands in [Ni(en)2(dmf)2]2+ (below 3 kcal mol-1) and the reversible transformation of [Ni(en)2(dmf)2]2+ into [Ni(en)3]2+ (below 20 kcal mol-1).

RESUMEN

This paper describes the syntheses of several functionalized dihydropyrene (DHP) molecular switches with different substitution patterns. Regioselective nucleophilic alkylation of a 5-substituted dimethyl isophthalate allowed the development of a workable synthetic protocol for the preparation of 2,7-alkyne-functionalized DHPs. Synthesis of DHPs with surface-anchoring groups in the 2,7- and 4,9-positions is described. The molecular structures of several intermediates and DHPs were elucidated by X-ray single-crystal diffraction. Molecular properties and switching capabilities of both types of DHPs were assessed by light irradiation experiments, spectroelectrochemistry, and cyclic voltammetry. Spectroelectrochemistry, in combination with density functional theory (DFT) calculations, shows reversible electrochemical switching from the DHP forms to the cyclophanediene (CPD) forms. Charge-transport behavior was assessed in single-molecule scanning tunneling microscope (STM) break junctions, combined with density functional theory-based quantum transport calculations. All DHPs with surface-contacting groups form stable molecular junctions. Experiments show that the molecular conductance depends on the substitution pattern of the DHP motif. The conductance was found to decrease with increasing applied bias.

RESUMEN

Several trinuclear ferrocenes are obtained by Friedel-Crafts reaction of octamethylferrocene with ferrocenoyl chloride and subsequent modifications. 1,1'-Diferrocenoyloctamethylferrocene (3) is transformed to the divinyl derivative (4a) by reaction with MeLi and AlCl3. The reactive 4a cyclizes spontaneously to a [4]ferrocenophane with buta-1,3-diene handle (5) or in the presence of AlCl3 to a [3]ferrocenophane with propene handle (6). Structure assignments are supported by X-ray crystallography and NMR spectroscopy, and mechanisms are proposed. Electrochemical behavior of the compounds was investigated with cyclic voltammetry, and assignments of the redox processes were carried out with the aid of density functional theory calculations. The synthesized compounds and demonstrated transformations represent useful tools for preparation of materials for charge-transport studies in metal-molecule-metal junctions.

RESUMEN

A novel chiral disulfoxide ligand pair bearing fluorine atoms at the 6 and 6' position of its atropisomeric backbone, ( M, S, S)- and ( P, S, S)- p-Tol-6F-BIPHESO, was synthesized. Complexation to a rhodium(I) precursor gave rise to µ-Cl- and µ-OH-bridged rhodium dimer complexes incorporating the new ( M, S, S)- p-Tol-6F-BIPHESO ligand, while its sibling ( P, S, S)- p-Tol-6F-BIPHESO was not complexed efficiently to the rhodium precursor. The performance of this disulfoxide ligand [( M, S, S)- p-Tol-6F-BIPHESO] in catalysis was tested in both 1,4- and 1,2-addition reactions of arylboronic acids. We show that addition to both cyclic and acyclic enones as well as N-tosylarylimines proceeds with high yields and high enantioselectivities to give the corresponding products. The synthesis of enantiomerically pure p-Tol-6F-BIPHESO is straightforward and inexpensive which, together with the high catalytic performance and wide substrate scope for these addition reactions, makes it a very attractive alternative to more classical chiral ligand entities.

RESUMEN

The identity of the natural product samoquasine A has remained obscure since its isolation from custard apple seeds in 2000. One of the proposed structures, benzo[ f]phthalazin-4(3 H)-one, was prepared in two steps by regioselective ortho-lithiation/formylation of N, N-diisopropyl-2-naphthylamide, followed by cyclization with hydrazine, but was shown to be different from the natural product. Perlolidine, another candidate structure, was synthesized by a novel route involving a ß-selective Heck reaction of butyl vinyl ether. Both perlolidine and samoquasine A are converted by trimethylsilyldiazomethane into the same N-methyl derivative. In addition, the 13C NMR spectra of perlolidine and another structurally mis-assigned natural product, cherimoline, are almost identical. Thus, both samoquasine A and cherimoline are actually perlolidine.

RESUMEN

Rhenium and ruthenium complexes containing N-heterocylic carbene (NHC) ligands and conjugated to indomethacin were prepared. The anticancer properties were probed against pancreatic cell lines, revealing a remarkable activity of the rhenium fragment as anticancer agent. The ruthenium complexes were found to be inactive against the same pancreatic cancer cell lines, either alone or in conjugation with indomethacin. An in-depth biological study revealed the origin of the anticancer properties of the rhenium tricarbonyl fragment, of which a complete elucidation had yet to be achieved. It was found that the rhenium complexes induce cell cycle arrest at the G2/M phase by inhibiting the phosphorylation of Aurora-A kinase. A preliminary study on the structure-activity relationship on a large family of these complexes revealed that the anticancer properties are mainly associated with the lability of the ancillary ligand, with inert complexes showing limited to no anticancer properties.

RESUMEN

A family of five neutral cyclometalated iridium(III) tetrazolato complexes and their methylated cationic analogues have been synthesised and characterised. The complexes are distinguished by variations of the substituents or degree of π conjugation on either the phenylpyridine or tetrazolato ligands. The photophysical properties of these species have been evaluated in organic and aqueous media, revealing predominantly a solvatochromic emission originating from mixed metal-to-ligand and ligand-to-ligand charge transfer excited states of triplet multiplicity. These emissions are characterised by typically long excited-state lifetimes (∼hundreds of ns), and quantum yields around 5-10 % in aqueous media. Methylation of the complexes caused a systematic red-shift of the emission profiles. The behaviour and the effects of the different complexes were then examined in cells. The neutral species localised mostly in the endoplasmic reticulum and lipid droplets, whereas the majority of the cationic complexes localised in the mitochondria. The amount of complexes found within cells does not depend on lipophilicity, which potentially suggests diverse uptake mechanisms. Methylated analogues were found to be more cytotoxic compared to the neutral species, a behaviour that might to be linked to a combination of uptake and intracellular localisation.

RESUMEN

The compounds and complexes 1,4-C6 H4 (C≡C-cyclo-3-C4 H3 S)2 (2), trans-[Pt(C≡C-cyclo-3-C4 H3 S)2 (PEt3 )2 ] (3), trans-[Ru(C≡C-cyclo-3-C4 H3 S)2 (dppe)2 ] (4; dppe=1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane) and trans-[Ru(C≡C-cyclo-3-C4 H3 S)2 {P(OEt)3 }4 ] (5) featuring the 3-thienyl moiety as a surface contacting group for gold electrodes have been prepared, crystallographically characterised in the case of 3-5 and studied in metal|molecule|metal junctions by using both scanning tunnelling microscope break-junction (STM-BJ) and STM-I(s) methods (measuring the tunnelling current (I) as a function of distance (s)). The compounds exhibit similar conductance profiles, with a low conductance feature being more readily identified by STM-I(s) methods, and a higher feature by the STM-BJ method. The lower conductance feature was further characterised by analysis using an unsupervised, automated multi-parameter vector classification (MPVC) of the conductance traces. The combination of similarly structured HOMOs and non-resonant tunnelling mechanism accounts for the remarkably similar conductance values across the chemically distinct members of the family 2-5.

RESUMEN

The thermal annealing behaviour of an electrolyte-triggered calixarene hydrogelator is found to depend strongly on the specific metal chloride used. While the lithium chloride gel showed typical gel-sol transitions as a function of temperature, the magnesium chloride gel was found to repeatedly strengthen with heat-cool cycles. Structural investigations using small-angle neutron scattering, and scanning probe microscopy, suggest that the annealing behaviour is associated with a change in morphology of the fibrous structures supporting the gel. On prolonged standing at room temperature, the magnesium chloride gel underwent a gel-crystal transition, with the collapsing gel accompanied by the deposition of crystals of a magnesium complex of the proline-functionalised calix[4]arene gelator.

RESUMEN

We carried out time-resolved infrared (TR-IR) and emission lifetime measurements on a Re(I) carbonyl complex having an N-heterocyclic carbene ligand, namely, fac-[Re(CO)3(PyImPh)Br], under photochemically reactive (in solution in acetonitrile) and nonreactive (in solution in dichloromethane) conditions to investigate the mechanism of photochemical ligand substitution reactions. The TR-IR measurements revealed that no reaction occurs on a picosecond time scale and the cationic product, namely, fac-[Re(CO)3(PyImPh)(MeCN)]+, is produced on a nanosecond time scale only in solution in acetonitrile, which indicates that the reaction proceeds thermally from the excited state. Because no other products were observed by TR-IR, we concluded that this cationic product is an intermediate species for further reactions. The measurements of the temperature-dependent emission lifetime and analysis using transition-state theory revealed that the photochemical substitution reaction proceeds from a metal-to-ligand charge transfer excited state, the structure of which allows the potential coordination of a solvent molecule. Thus, the coordinating capacity of the solvent determines whether the reaction proceeds or not. This mechanism is different from those of photochemical reactions of other types of Re(I) carbonyl complexes owing to the unique characteristics of the carbene ligand.

RESUMEN

The reaction of Co(CH3COO)2·4H2O with the Schiff base ligand LH4 derived from o-vanillin and tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane produces the dinuclear mixed-valence complex [CoIICoIII(LH2)2(CH3COO)(H2O)](H2O)3 (1), which has been investigated using IR spectroscopy, X-ray crystallography, temperature-dependent magnetic susceptibility, magnetization, HFEPR spectroscopy, and ac susceptibility measurements at various frequencies, temperatures, and external magnetic fields. The structure of 1 consists of neutral molecules in which two cobalt ions with distorted octahedral geometries, CoIIO6 and CoIIIN2O4, are bridged by two deprotonated -CH2O- groups of the two LH22- ligands. 1 completes a series with Cl, Br, NO3, and NCS anions published before by different authors. Low-temperature HFEPR measurements reveal that the ground electronic state of the Co(II) center in 1 is a highly anisotropic Kramers doublet; the effective g values of 7.18, 2.97, and 1.96 are frequency-independent over the frequency ranges 200-630, 200-406, and 200-300 GHz for the highest, intermediate, and lowest geff values, respectively. The two lower values were not seen at higher frequencies because the magnetic field was not high enough. Temperature-dependent magnetic susceptibility and field-dependent magnetization data confirm high magnetic anisotropy of the easy axis type. Complex 1 behaves as a single-ion magnet under a small applied external field and demonstrates two relaxation modes that strongly depend on the applied static dc field. The observation of multiple relaxation pathways clearly distinguishes 1 from the Cl and Br analogues.

RESUMEN

The reaction of the ß-triketonate ligands tris(4-methylbenzoyl)methanide and tribenzoylmethanide with the trivalent lanthanoids Eu3+, Er3+, and Yb3+ in the presence of Cs+ afforded polymeric structures where the repeating units are represented by bimetallic tetranuclear assemblies of formulation {[Ln(Cs)(ß-triketonate)4]2}n. The only exception is the structure formed by the reaction of tris(4-methylbenzoyl)methanide, Yb3+, and Cs+, which yielded a polymeric assembly where the repeating units are mononuclear Yb3+ complexes bridged by Cs+ cations. Photophysical measurements on the obtained materials confirmed efficient sensitization from the ligand excited states to the 4f* excited states of the three lanthanoids. According to transient absorption data, Er3+ and Yb3+ are sensitized via energy transfer from the triplet state of the ß-triketonate ligands. On the other hand, energy transfer to Eu3+ seems to occur via an alternative pathway, possibly directly via the singlet state or through ligand to metal charge transfer states. The emission measurements confirm efficient sensitization for all three lanthanoids and bright near-infrared emission for Er3+ and Yb3+, a characteristic that seems to be linked to the specific chemical structure of the ß-triketonate ligands.

RESUMEN

N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands with naphthyl side chains were employed for the synthesis of unsaturated, yet isolable [(NHC)Ir(cod)](+) (cod=1,5-cyclooctadiene) complexes. These compounds are stabilised by an interaction of the aromatic wingtip that leads to a sideways tilt of the NHC-Ir bond. Detailed studies show how the tilting of such N-heterocyclic carbenes affects the electronic shielding properties of the carbene carbon atom and how this is reflected by significant upfield shifts in the (13) C NMR signals. When employed in the intramolecular hydroamination, these [(NHC)Ir(cod)](+) species show very high catalytic activity under mild reaction conditions. An enantiopure version of the catalyst system produces pyrrolidines with excellent enantioselectivities.

RESUMEN

The first systematic investigation into the Baeyer-Villiger reaction of an anthraquinone is presented. The double Baeyer-Villiger reaction of quinizarin dimethyl ether is viable, directly providing the dibenzo[b,f][1,4]-dioxocin-6,11-dione ring-system, which is otherwise difficult to prepare. This methodology provides rapid access to 1,2,3,4-tetraoxygenated benzenes, and has been exploited by application to the total synthesis of a natural occurring benzodioxole and its biphenyl dimer, which both display noteworthy biological activity. Interestingly, the axially chiral biphenyl was found to be configurationally stable, but the resolved enantiomers exhibit no optical activity at the αD-line.

RESUMEN

A new synthetic methodology has been developed for the preparation of heterobimetallic group 11 and group 12 complexes of a symmetrical bis-NHC "pincer" ligand. The synthetic route involved the initial preparation of a mononuclear [Au(NHC)2](+) complex with pendent imidazole moieties on the NHC ligands. Subsequent alkylation of the imidazole groups with Et3OBF4 and metalation with a second metal ion (Ag(I) or Hg(II)) provided two heterobimetallic complexes. Four homobimetallic (Cu(I)2, Ag(I)2, Au(I)2, and Hg(II)2) complexes of the same bis-NHC "pincer" ligand were also prepared. The homobimetallic Cu(I)2, Au(I)2, and Hg(II)2 complexes and heterobimetallic Au(I)-Ag(I) and Au(I)-Hg(II) complexes and the synthetic intermediates for the heterobimetallic complexes were characterized by X-ray crystallography. These X-ray structures show that the bimetallic complexes adopt "twisted" conformations in the solid state, supporting short M···M interactions. Crystalline samples of the homobimetallic Ag(I)2 and Au(I)2 and heterobimetallic Au(I)-Ag(I) and Au(I)-Hg(II) complexes were emissive at room temperature and at 77 K. The geometries of the synthesized complexes were optimized at the M06-L/def2-SVP level of theory, and the electronic nature of the M···M interactions for all synthesized complexes was investigated using natural bond orbital (NBO) calculations.

RESUMEN

Two α/ß-fold hydrolases, KARRIKIN INSENSITIVE2 (KAI2) and Arabidopsis thaliana DWARF14 (AtD14), are necessary for responses to karrikins (KARs) and strigolactones (SLs) in Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana). Although KAI2 mediates responses to KARs and some SL analogs, AtD14 mediates SL but not KAR responses. To further determine the specificity of these proteins, we assessed the ability of naturally occurring deoxystrigolactones to inhibit Arabidopsis hypocotyl elongation, regulate seedling gene expression, suppress outgrowth of secondary inflorescences, and promote seed germination. Neither 5-deoxystrigol nor 4-deoxyorobanchol was active in KAI2-dependent seed germination or hypocotyl elongation, but both were active in AtD14-dependent hypocotyl elongation and secondary shoot growth. However, the nonnatural enantiomer of 5-deoxystrigol was active through KAI2 in growth and gene expression assays. We found that the four stereoisomers of the SL analog GR24 had similar activities to their deoxystrigolactone counterparts. The results suggest that AtD14 and KAI2 exhibit selectivity to the butenolide D ring in the 2'R and 2'S configurations, respectively. However, we found, for nitrile-debranone (CN-debranone, a simple SL analog), that the 2'R configuration is inactive but that the 2'S configuration is active through both AtD14 and KAI2. Our results support the conclusion that KAI2-dependent signaling does not respond to canonical SLs. Furthermore, racemic mixtures of chemically synthesized SLs and their analogs, such as GR24, should be used with caution because they can activate responses that are not specific to naturally occurring SLs. In contrast, the use of specific stereoisomers might provide valuable information about the specific perception systems operating in different plant tissues, parasitic weed seeds, and arbuscular mycorrhizae.

RESUMEN

The reaction of hydrated lanthanoid chlorides with tribenzoylmethane and an alkali metal hydroxide consistently resulted in the crystallization of neutral tetranuclear assemblies with the general formula [Ln(Ae⋅HOEt)(L)4 ]2 (Ln=Eu(3+) , Er(3+) , Yb(3+) ; Ae=Na(+) , K(+) , Rb(+) ). Analysis of the crystal structures of these species revealed a coordination geometry that varied from a slightly distorted square antiprism to a slightly distorted triangular dodecahedron, with the specific geometrical shape being dependent on the degree of lattice solvation and identity of the alkali metal. The near-infrared (NIR)-emitting assemblies of Yb(3+) and Er(3+) showed remarkably efficient emission, characterized by significantly longer excited-state lifetimes (τobs ≈37-47 µs for Yb(3+) and τobs ≈4-6 µs for Er(3+) ) when compared with the broader family of lanthanoid ß-diketonate species, even in the case of perfluorination of the ligands. The Eu(3+) assemblies show bright red emission and a luminescence performance (τobs ≈0.5 ms, ${{\Phi}{{{\rm L}\hfill \atop {\rm Ln}\hfill}}}$≈35-37 %, ηsens ≈68-70 %) more akin to the ß-diketonate species. The results highlight that the ß-triketonate ligand offers a tunable and facile system for the preparation of efficient NIR emitters without the need for more complicated perfluorination or deuteration synthetic strategies.

RESUMEN

A series of cross-conjugated compounds based on an (E)-4,4'-(hexa-3-en-1,5-diyne-3,4-diyl)bis(N,N-bis(4-methoxyphenyl)aniline) skeleton (1-6) have been synthesized. The linear optical absorption properties can be tuned by modification of the substituents at the 1 and 5 positions of the hexa-3-en-1,5-diynyl backbone (1: Si(CH(CH3)2)3, 2: C6H4C≡CSi(CH3)3, 3: C6H4COOCH3, 4: C6H4CF3, 5: C6H4C≡N, 6: C6H4C≡CC5H4N), although attempts to introduce electron-donating (C6H4CH3, C6H4OCH3, C6H4Si(CH3)3) substituents at these positions were hampered by the ensuing decreased stability of the compounds. Spectroelectrochemical investigations of selected examples, supported by DFT-based computational studies, have shown that one- and two-electron oxidation of the 1,2-bis(triarylamine)ethene fragment also results in electronic changes to the perpendicular π-system in the hexa-3-en-1,5-diynyl branch of the molecule. These properties suggest that (E)-hexa-3-en-1,5-diynyl-based compounds could have applications in molecular sensing and molecular electronics.

RESUMEN

An efficient and divergent methodology for the synthesis of new anthracenone-pyranones and anthracenone-furans is described. Key reactions discussed in these syntheses include an aldehyde promoted annulation with a ß-keto-sulfoxide, a domino alkyne insertion/carbonylation/Nu-acylation and a DMEDA promoted Castro-Stephens reaction. We also report the in vitro growth inhibition of these compounds in a range of human cancer cells. The natural product BE-26554A displayed good cell growth activity on BE2-C neuroblastoma and SMA glioblastoma cell lines at 0.17 and 0.16µM (GI50), respectively. Of note, were a CF3 functionalised anthracenone 4-pyranone (chromone) derivative 22, and an anthracenone-furan derivative 54 which displayed 0.20µM and 0.38µM growth inhibition, respectively, in the BE2-C neuroblastoma cell line.
