RESUMEN

Geological pathways for the recycling of Earth's surface materials into the mantle are both driven and obscured by plate tectonics1-3. Gauging the extent of this recycling is difficult because subducted crustal components are often released at relatively shallow depths, below arc volcanoes4-7. The conspicuous existence of blue boron-bearing diamonds (type IIb)8,9 reveals that boron, an element abundant in the continental and oceanic crust, is present in certain diamond-forming fluids at mantle depths. However, both the provenance of the boron and the geological setting of diamond crystallization were unknown. Here we show that boron-bearing diamonds carry previously unrecognized mineral assemblages whose high-pressure precursors were stable in metamorphosed oceanic lithospheric slabs at depths reaching the lower mantle. We propose that some of the boron in seawater-serpentinized oceanic lithosphere is subducted into the deep mantle, where it is released with hydrous fluids that enable diamond growth10. Type IIb diamonds are thus among the deepest diamonds ever found and indicate a viable pathway for the deep-mantle recycling of crustal elements.

Most individuals, regardless of formal musical training, have long-term absolute pitch memory (APM) for familiar musical recordings, though with varying levels of accuracy. The present study followed up on recent evidence suggesting an association between singing accuracy and APM (Halpern & Pfordresher, 2022, Attention, Perception, & Psychophysics, 84(1), 260-269), as well as tonal short-term memory (STM) and APM (Van Hedger et al., 2018, Quarterly Journal of Experimental Psychology, 71(4), 879-891). Participants from three research sites (n = 108) completed a battery of tasks including APM, tonal STM, singing accuracy, and self-reported auditory imagery. Both tonal STM and singing accuracy predicted APM, replicating prior results. Tonal STM also predicted singing accuracy, music training, and auditory imagery. Further tests suggested that the association between APM and singing accuracy was fully mediated by tonal STM. This pattern comports well with models of vocal pitch matching that include STM for pitch as a mechanism for sensorimotor translation.

During Li-ion battery operation, (electro)chemical side reactions occur within the cell that can promote or degrade performance. These complex reactions produce byproducts in the solid, liquid, and gas phases. Studying byproducts in these three phases can help optimize battery lifetimes. To relate the measured gas-phase byproducts to species dissolved in the liquid-phase, equilibrium proprieties such as the Henry's law constants are required. The present work implements a pressure decay experiment to determine the thermodynamic equilibrium concentrations between the gas and liquid phases for ethylene (C2H4) and carbon dioxide (CO2), which are two gases commonly produced in Li-ion batteries, with an electrolyte of 1.2 M LiPF6 in 3:7 wt/wt ethylene carbonate/ethyl methyl carbonate and 3 wt % fluoroethylene carbonate (15:25:57:3 wt % total composition). The experimentally measured pressure decay curve is fit to an analytical dissolution model and extrapolated to predict the final pressure at equilibrium. The relationship between the partial pressures and concentration of dissolved gas in electrolyte at equilibrium is then used to determine Henry's law constants of 2.0 × 104 kPa for C2H4 and k CO2 = 1.1 × 104 kPa for CO2. These values are compared to Henry's law constants predicted from density functional theory and show good agreement within a factor of 3.

Out-of-equilibrium electrochemical reaction mechanisms are notoriously difficult to characterize. However, such reactions are critical for a range of technological applications. For instance, in metal-ion batteries, spontaneous electrolyte degradation controls electrode passivation and battery cycle life. Here, to improve our ability to elucidate electrochemical reactivity, we for the first time combine computational chemical reaction network (CRN) analysis based on density functional theory (DFT) and differential electrochemical mass spectroscopy (DEMS) to study gas evolution from a model Mg-ion battery electrolyte─magnesium bistriflimide (Mg(TFSI)2) dissolved in diglyme (G2). Automated CRN analysis allows for the facile interpretation of DEMS data, revealing H2O, C2H4, and CH3OH as major products of G2 decomposition. These findings are further explained by identifying elementary mechanisms using DFT. While TFSI- is reactive at Mg electrodes, we find that it does not meaningfully contribute to gas evolution. The combined theoretical-experimental approach developed here provides a means to effectively predict electrolyte decomposition products and pathways when initially unknown.

INTRODUCTION: Systemically, changes in serum platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR), platelet count to mean platelet volume ratio (PVR), neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and monocyte to lymphocyte (MLR) represent primary responses to early inflammation and infection. This study aimed to determine whether PLR, PVR, NLR, and MLR can be useful in diagnosing periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) in total hip arthroplasty (THA) patients. METHODS: A total of 464 patients that underwent revision THA with calculable PLR, PVR, NLR, and MLR in 2 groups was evaluated: 1) 191 patients with a pre-operative diagnosis of PJI, and 2) 273 matched patients treated for revision THA for aseptic complications. RESULTS: The sensitivity and specificity of PLR combined with erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), C-reactive protein (CRP), synovial white blood cell count (WBC) and synovial polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMN) (97.9%; 98.5%) is significantly higher than only ESR combined with CRP, synovial WBC and synovial PMN (94.2%; 94.5%; p < 0.01). The sensitivity and specificity of PVR combined with ESR, CRP and synovial WBC, and synovial PMN (98.4%; 98.2%) is higher than only ESR combined with CRP, synovial WBC and synovial PMN (94.2%; 94.5%; p < 0.01). CONCLUSION: The study results demonstrate that both PLR and PVR calculated from complete blood counts when combined with serum and synovial fluid markers have increased diagnostic sensitivity and specificity in diagnosing periprosthetic joint infection in THA patients. Sleep is an evolutionarily conserved process that has been described in different animal systems. For insects, sleep characterization has been primarily achieved using behavioral and electrophysiological correlates in a few systems. Sleep in mosquitoes, which are important vectors of disease-causing pathogens, has not been directly examined. This is surprising as circadian rhythms, which have been well studied in mosquitoes, influence sleep in other systems. In this study, we characterized sleep in mosquitoes using body posture analysis and behavioral correlates, and quantified the effect of sleep deprivation on sleep rebound, host landing and blood-feeding propensity. Body and appendage position metrics revealed a clear distinction between the posture of mosquitoes in their putative sleep and awake states for multiple species, which correlated with a reduction in responsiveness to host cues. Sleep assessment informed by these posture analyses indicated significantly more sleep during periods of low activity. Night-time and daytime sleep deprivation resulting from the delivery of vibration stimuli induced sleep rebound in the subsequent phase in day and night active mosquitoes, respectively. Lastly, sleep deprivation suppressed host landing in both laboratory and field settings, and impaired blood feeding of a human host when mosquitoes would normally be active. These results suggest that quantifiable sleep states occur in mosquitoes and highlight the potential epidemiological importance of mosquito sleep.

OBJECTIVE: To assess potential predictive variables for nodal metastasis and survival outcomes in patients with newly diagnosed, low-grade endometrial stromal sarcoma. METHODS: We performed a single-institution, retrospective analysis of consecutive patients with newly diagnosed, low-grade endometrial stromal sarcoma who presented between January 1, 1980 and December 31, 2019 and underwent hysterectomy at our institution or presented within 3 months of primary surgery elsewhere before recurrence. Patients who presented to our institution only at recurrence were excluded. Patients with <3 months of follow-up were excluded from survival analyses. RESULTS: We identified 127 consecutive patients for analysis. Median age at diagnosis was 48 years (range 19-88 years); 91 (74.6%) of 127 were pre-menopausal; and 74 (58.3%) of 127 had uterine-confined, stage I tumors. Of 56 patients (44.1%) who underwent lymph node sampling, 10 (17.9%) had nodal metastasis. Of the 10 with nodal metastasis, 1 (10%) did not have lymphadenopathy or extra-uterine disease, 4 (40%) had lymphadenopathy only, 1 (10%) had extra-uterine disease only, and 4 (40%) had both. Among the 29 patients without apparent extra-uterine disease or gross lymphadenopathy, there was one occult lymph node metastasis (3.4%). Gross lymphadenopathy at time of surgery was predictive for lymph node metastasis (p<0.001). Median follow-up was 69 months (range 4-336) for the 95 patients included in the survival analyses. The 5-year progression-free survival and disease-specific survival rates were 79.8% and 90.8%, respectively. Patients with stage I tumors had longer progression-free survival than those with stage II-IV disease (p<0.001); there was no difference in disease-specific survival (p=0.63). Post-operative observation versus adjuvant therapy with hormone blockade or radiation therapy did not result in progression-free survival differences for stage I or completely resected stage II-IV disease (p=0.50 and p=0.81, respectively). Similarly, there was no disease-specific survival difference for completely resected stage II-IV disease (p=0.3). CONCLUSIONS: Lymph node dissection in patients with low-grade endometrial stromal sarcoma should be reserved for those with clinically suspicious lymphadenopathy. Disease stage correlated with progression-free survival but not disease-specific survival. Post-operative therapy did not improve progression-free survival or disease-specific survival.

Interfacial reactions are notoriously difficult to characterize, and robust prediction of the chemical evolution and associated functionality of the resulting surface film is one of the grand challenges of materials chemistry. The solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI), critical to Li-ion batteries (LIBs), exemplifies such a surface film, and despite decades of work, considerable controversy remains regarding the major components of the SEI as well as their formation mechanisms. Here we use a reaction network to investigate whether lithium ethylene monocarbonate (LEMC) or lithium ethylene dicarbonate (LEDC) is the major organic component of the LIB SEI. Our data-driven, automated methodology is based on a systematic generation of relevant species using a general fragmentation/recombination procedure which provides the basis for a vast thermodynamic reaction landscape, calculated with density functional theory. The shortest pathfinding algorithms are employed to explore the reaction landscape and obtain previously proposed formation mechanisms of LEMC as well as several new reaction pathways and intermediates. For example, we identify two novel LEMC formation mechanisms: one which involves LiH generation and another that involves breaking the (CH2)O-C(═O)OLi bond in LEDC. Most importantly, we find that all identified paths, which are also kinetically favorable under the explored conditions, require water as a reactant. This condition severely limits the amount of LEMC that can form, as compared with LEDC, a conclusion that has direct impact on the SEI formation in Li-ion energy storage systems. Finally, the data-driven framework presented here is generally applicable to any electrochemical system and expected to improve our understanding of surface passivation.

Mesonephric carcinoma of the cervix is a rare tumor derived from Wolffian remnants. Mesonephric-like carcinomas of the ovary and endometrium, while morphologically similar, do not have obvious Wolffian derivation. Here, we sought to characterize the repertoire of genetic alterations in primary mesonephric and mesonephric-like carcinomas, in the distinct histologic components of mixed cases, as well as in matched primary tumors and metastases. DNA from microdissected tumor and normal tissue from mesonephric carcinomas (cervix, n = 8) and mesonephric-like carcinomas (ovarian n = 15, endometrial n = 13) were subjected to sequencing targeting 468 cancer-related genes. The histologically distinct components of four cases with mixed histology and four primary tumors and their matched metastases were microdissected and analyzed separately. Mesonephric-like carcinomas were underpinned by somatic KRAS mutations (25/28, 89%) akin to mesonephric carcinomas (8/8, 100%), but also harbored genetic alterations more frequently reported in Müllerian tumors. Mesonephric-like carcinomas that lacked KRAS mutations harbored NRAS (n = 2, ovary) or BRAF (n = 1, endometrium) hotspot mutations. PIK3CA mutations were identified in both mesonephric-like (8/28, 28%) and mesonephric carcinomas (2/8, 25%). Only mesonephric-like tumors harbored CTNNB1 hotspot (4/28, 14%) and PTEN (3/13, 23%) mutations. Copy number analysis revealed frequent gains of chromosomes 1q and 10 in both mesonephric (87% 1q; 50% chromosome 10) and mesonephric-like tumors (89% 1q; 43% chromosome 10). Chromosome 12 gains were more frequent in ovarian mesonephric-like carcinomas, and losses of chromosome 9 were more frequent in mesonephric than in mesonephric-like carcinomas (both p = 0.01, Fisher's exact test). The histologically distinct components of four mixed cases were molecularly related and shared similar patterns of genetic alterations. The progression from primary to metastatic lesions involved the acquisition of additional mutations, and/or shifts from subclonal to clonal mutations. Our findings suggest that mesonephric-like carcinomas are derived from a Müllerian substrate with differentiation along Wolffian/mesonephric lines.

We experimentally investigate the tunable Doppler shift in an 80 nm thick indium-tin-oxide (ITO) film at its epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) region. Under strong and pulsed excitation, ITO exhibits a time-varying change in the refractive index. A maximum frequency redshift of 1.8 THz is observed in the reflected light when the pump light has a peak intensity of ∼140GW/cm2 and a pulse duration of ∼580fs, at an incident angle of 40°. The frequency shift increases with the increase in pump intensity and saturates at the intensity of ∼140GW/cm2. When the pump pulse duration increases from ∼580fs to ∼1380fs, the maximum attainable frequency shift decreases from 1.8 THz to 0.7 THz. In addition, the pump energy required to saturate the frequency shift decreases with the increase in pump pulse duration for ∼x<1ps and remains unchanged for ∼x>1ps durations. Tunability exists among the pump pulse energy, duration, and incident angle for the Doppler shift of the ITO-ENZ material, which can be employed to design efficient frequency shifters for telecom applications.

Chess experts have repeatedly demonstrated exceptional recall of chessboards, which is weakened by disruption of the chessboard. However, chess experts still perform better than novices when recalling such disrupted chessboards, suggesting a somewhat generalized expertise effect. In the current study, we examined the extent of this generalized expertise effect on early processing of visuo-spatial working memory (VSWM), by comparing 14 chess experts (Elo rating > 2000) and 15 novices on a change-detection paradigm using disrupted chessboards, where attention had to be selectively deployed to either visual or spatial features, or divided across both features. The paradigm differed in the stimuli used (domain-specific chess pieces vs. novel visual shapes) to evaluate domain-general effects of chess expertise. Both experts and novices had greater memory discriminability for chess stimuli than for the unfamiliar stimuli, suggesting a salience advantage for familiar stimuli. Experts, however, demonstrated better memory discriminability than novices not only for chess stimuli presented on these disrupted chessboards, but also for novel, domain-general stimuli, particularly when detecting spatial changes. This expertise advantage was greater for chessboards with supra-capacity set sizes. For set sizes within the working-memory capacity, the expertise advantage was driven by enhanced selective attention to spatial features by chess experts when compared to visual features. However, any expertise-related VSWM advantage disappeared in the absence of the 8 × 8 chessboard display, which implicates the chessboard display as an essential perceptual aspect facilitating the "expert memory effect" in chess, albeit one that might generalize beyond strictly domain-relevant stimuli.

BACKGROUND: A recent systematic review demonstrated that reinfection rates following eradication of hip and knee periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) may be as high as 29%. This study aimed to develop a preoperative risk calculator for assessing patient's individual risk associated with reinfection following treatment of PJI in total joint arthroplasty (TJA). METHODS: A total of 1081 consecutive patients who underwent revision TJA for PJI were evaluated. In total, 293 patients were diagnosed with TJA reinfection. A total of 56 risk factors, including patient characteristics and surgical variables, were evaluated with multivariate regression analysis. Analysis of the area under the receiver operating characteristics curve was performed to evaluate the strength of the predictive model. RESULTS: Of the 56 risk factors studied, 19 were found to have a significant effect as risk factor for TJA reinfection. The strongest predictors for TJA reinfection included previous PJI treatment techniques such as irrigation and debridement, the number of previous surgical interventions, medical comorbidities such as obesity, drug abuse, depression and smoking, as well as microbiology including the presence of Enterococcus species. The combined area under the receiver operating characteristics curve of the risk calculator for periprosthetic hip and knee joint reinfection was 0.75. CONCLUSIONS: The study findings demonstrate that surgical factors, including previous PJI surgical treatment techniques as well as the number of previous surgeries, alongside microbiology including the presence of Enterococcus species have the strongest effect on the risk for periprosthetic THA and TKA joint reinfection, suggesting the limited applicability of the existing risk calculators for the development of PJI following primary TJA in predicting the risk of periprosthetic joint reinfection.

BACKGROUND: Patients undergoing a 2-stage revision for periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) often require a repeat spacer in the interim due to persistent infection. This study aims to report outcomes for patients with repeat spacer exchange and to identify risk factors associated with interim spacer exchange in 2-stage revision arthroplasty. METHODS: A total of 256 consecutive 2-stage revisions for chronic infection of total hip arthroplasty and total knee arthroplasty with reimplantation and minimum 2-year follow-up were investigated. An interim spacer exchange was performed in 49 patients (exchange cohort), and these patients were propensity score matched to 196 patients (nonexchange cohort). Multivariate analysis was performed to analyze risk factors for failure of interim spacer exchange. RESULTS: Patients in the propensity score-matched exchange cohort demonstrated a significantly increased reinfection risk compared to patients without interim spacer exchange (24% vs 15%, P = .03). Patients in the propensity score-matched exchange cohort showed significantly lower postoperative scores for 3 patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs): hip disability and osteoarthritis outcome score physical function (46.0 vs 54.9, P = .01); knee disability and osteoarthritis outcome score physical function (43.1 vs 51.7, P < .01); and patient-reported outcomes measurement information system physical function short form (41.6 vs 47.0, P = .03). Multivariate analysis demonstrated Charles Comorbidity Index (odds ratio, 1.56; P = .01) and the presence of Enterococcus species (odds ratio, 1.43; P = .03) as independent risk factors associated with 2-stage reimplantation requiring an interim spacer exchange for periprosthetic joint infection. CONCLUSION: This study demonstrates that patients with spacer exchange had a significantly higher risk of reinfection at 2 years of follow-up. Additionally, patients with spacer exchange demonstrated lower postoperative PROM scores and diminished improvement in multiple PROM scores after reimplantation, indicating that an interim spacer exchange in 2-stage revision is associated with worse patient outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Modular component exchange and culture-directed antibiotic treatment is routinely employed for acute periprosthetic joint infection (PJI). However, as many as 7%-23% of PJIs have been reported to yield negative culture results. The efficacy of debridement, antibiotics, and implant retention (DAIR) with modular component exchange in the setting of acute culture negative PJI remains largely unknown. The aim of our study is to evaluate the outcomes of DAIR with modular component exchange in acute culture-positive and culture-negative PJI. METHODS: A total of 149 consecutive patients with primary total joint replacements (90 total knee arthroplasties and 59 total hip arthroplasties) who underwent DAIR with modular component exchange for acute PJI with at least 3 years of follow-up were evaluated: (1) 46 culture-negative PJI patients and (2) 103 culture-positive PJI patients. Reinfection and aseptic revision rates along with complication rates were compared. RESULTS: The reinfection rate for DAIR in acute culture-negative PJI was 13.0% compared to 19.4% in culture-positive PJI (P = .48). Mean survival time from reinfection between culture-negative (7.7 ± 0.4 years) and culture-positive (7.4 ± 0.3 years) PJI groups did not differ significantly (P = .40). Aseptic revision rates were 8.7% and 4.9% (P = .46), respectively, with loosening being the primary reason for implant failure in both cohorts. CONCLUSIONS: Despite lack of an identifying organism to guide postoperative antibiotic therapy, DAIR with modular component exchange for acute culture-negative PJI was associated with similar reinfection rates compared to acute culture-positive PJI, suggesting that culture negativity may not be a contraindication to DAIR in patients with acute PJI.

While cheminformatics skills necessary for dealing with an ever-increasing amount of chemical information are considered important for students pursuing STEM careers in the age of big data, many schools do not offer a cheminformatics course or alternative training opportunities. This paper presents the Cheminformatics Online Chemistry Course (OLCC), which is organized and run by the Committee on Computers in Chemical Education (CCCE) of the American Chemical Society (ACS)'s Division of Chemical Education (CHED). The Cheminformatics OLCC is a highly collaborative teaching project involving instructors at multiple schools who teamed up with external chemical information experts recruited across sectors, including government and industry. From 2015 to 2019, three Cheminformatics OLCCs were offered. In each program, the instructors at participating schools would meet face-to-face with the students of a class, while external content experts engaged through online discussions across campuses with both the instructors and students. All the material created in the course has been made available at the open education repositories of LibreTexts and CCCE Web sites for other institutions to adapt to their future needs.

Thermal storage and transfer fluids have important applications in industrial, transportation, and domestic settings. Current thermal fluids have relatively low specific heats, often significantly below that of water. However, by introducing a thermochemical reaction to a base fluid, it is possible to enhance the fluid's thermal properties. In this work, density functional theory (DFT) is used to screen Diels-Alder reactions for use in aqueous thermal fluids. From an initial set of 52 reactions, four are identified with moderate aqueous solubility and predicted turning temperature near the liquid region of water. These reactions are selectively modified through 60 total functional group substitutions to produce novel reactions with improved solubility and thermal properties. Among the reactions generated by functional group substitution, seven have promising predicted thermal properties, significantly improving specific heat (by as much as 30.5%) and energy storage density (by as much as 4.9%) compared to pure water.

BACKGROUND: Treatment of adverse local tissue reaction (ALTR) is challenging owing to high complications and poor outcomes after a revision surgery. As dislocation is the most common cause of reoperation, it is often necessary to use advanced articulations such as dual mobility. This study aims to evaluate the outcome and complication rates after revision surgery with dual mobility constructs, compared to constrained and conventional articulations in the setting of significant abductor deficiency due to ALTR. METHODS: Out of a total of 338 revision total hip arthroplasties for ALTR, 234 patients with a significant tissue necrosis and abductor muscle insufficiency (grade 3) were evaluated. The complication rates after revisions were compared between 42 hips with dual mobility implants, 24 hips with constrained liners, 104 hips with large diameter heads (36-40 mm), and 64 hips with small diameter heads (≤32 mm). RESULTS: After an average of 4 years of follow-up (2.8-8.6), the dual mobility articulation had no dislocation, compared to 4.1% and 15.5% for constrained liner and conventional articulations, respectively (P < .001). Utilization of dual mobility and constrained liner cup also did not increase the risk of nondislocation complications, including periprosthetic joint infection and periprosthetic fracture (P = .18 and .52). CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrates significantly lower dislocation rates for dual mobility when compared to conventional articulations and comparable to constrained liners in cases of severe abductor deficiency due to ALTR, suggesting that dual mobility implants are viable surgical treatment alternatives to constrained liners to minimize dislocation during revision total hip arthroplasty in the setting of significant abductor deficiency due to ALTR.

BACKGROUND: Conversion total knee arthroplasty (TKA) in the presence of periarticular hardware can be associated with increased resource utilization, complications, and revisions. However, little guidance exists on the optimal approach to hardware removal. The purpose of this study is to compare outcomes of conversion TKA with hardware removal performed in either a staged or concurrent manner. METHODS: This is a retrospective study of 155 TKA operations performed with staged (45) or concurrent (110) removal of hardware at the time of TKA. Differences in patient data, case data, complications, reoperations, and revisions were evaluated. Subgroup comparisons of cases involving major hardware (plates, nails, rods), minor hardware (screws, buttons, wires), and tibial plates were performed. RESULTS: There were no differences in age, sex, body mass index, or comorbidities between patients who underwent staged or concurrent hardware removal. Rates of complications, reoperations, and revisions did not differ at multiple time points (90 days, 1 year, 2 years, 4 years). Patients who underwent staged hardware removal were more likely to have had prior surgery for fracture reconstruction (68% vs 33%, P < .001), to have had major hardware removed (84% vs 59%, P = .03), and were less likely to have had hardware removal performed through a single incision with TKA (50% vs 92%, P < .001). Subgroup analysis of major and minor hardware cases demonstrated comparable outcomes. CONCLUSION: There remains no established benefit to either a staged or concurrent approach to hardware removal at the time of TKA. This is true regardless of hardware burden. At this time, a case-by-case approach should be taken to conversion TKA in the presence of periarticular hardware.

Urbanization contributes to the formation of novel elemental combinations and signatures in terrestrial and aquatic watersheds, also known as 'chemical cocktails.' The composition of chemical cocktails evolves across space and time due to: (1) elevated concentrations from anthropogenic sources, (2) accelerated weathering and corrosion of the built environment, (3) increased drainage density and intensification of urban water conveyance systems, and (4) enhanced rates of geochemical transformations due to changes in temperature, ionic strength, pH, and redox potentials. Characterizing chemical cocktails and underlying geochemical processes is necessary for: (1) tracking pollution sources using complex chemical mixtures instead of individual elements or compounds; (2) developing new strategies for co-managing groups of contaminants; (3) identifying proxies for predicting transport of chemical mixtures using continuous sensor data; and (4) determining whether interactive effects of chemical cocktails produce ecosystem-scale impacts greater than the sum of individual chemical stressors. First, we discuss some unique urban geochemical processes which form chemical cocktails, such as urban soil formation, human-accelerated weathering, urban acidification-alkalinization, and freshwater salinization syndrome. Second, we review and synthesize global patterns in concentrations of major ions, carbon and nutrients, and trace elements in urban streams across different world regions and make comparisons with reference conditions. In addition to our global analysis, we highlight examples from some watersheds in the Baltimore-Washington DC region, which show increased transport of major ions, trace metals, and nutrients across streams draining a well-defined land-use gradient. Urbanization increased the concentrations of multiple major and trace elements in streams draining human-dominated watersheds compared to reference conditions. Chemical cocktails of major and trace elements were formed over diurnal cycles coinciding with changes in streamflow, dissolved oxygen, pH, and other variables measured by high-frequency sensors. Some chemical cocktails of major and trace elements were also significantly related to specific conductance (p<0.05), which can be measured by sensors. Concentrations of major and trace elements increased, peaked, or decreased longitudinally along streams as watershed urbanization increased, which is consistent with distinct shifts in chemical mixtures upstream and downstream of other major cities in the world. Our global analysis of urban streams shows that concentrations of multiple elements along the Periodic Table significantly increase when compared with reference conditions. Furthermore, similar biogeochemical patterns and processes can be grouped among distinct mixtures of elements of major ions, dissolved organic matter, nutrients, and trace elements as chemical cocktails. Chemical cocktails form in urban waters over diurnal cycles, decades, and throughout drainage basins. We conclude our global review and synthesis by proposing strategies for monitoring and managing chemical cocktails using source control, ecosystem restoration, and green infrastructure. We discuss future research directions applying the watershed chemical cocktail approach to diagnose and manage environmental problems. Ultimately, a chemical cocktail approach targeting sources, transport, and transformations of different and distinct elemental combinations is necessary to more holistically monitor and manage the emerging impacts of chemical mixtures in the world's fresh waters.
