RESUMEN

Eliminating hazardous organic contaminants from water is a major concern today. Nanomaterials with their textural features, large surface area, electrical conductivity, and magnetic properties make them efficient for the removal and photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants. The reaction mechanisms of the photocatalytic oxidation of common organic pollutants were critically examined. A detailed review of articles published on photocatalytic degradation of hydrocarbons, pesticides, and dyes was presented therein. This review seeks to bridge information gaps on the reported nanomaterial as photocatalysts for the degradation of organic pollutants under sub-headings, nanomaterials, organic pollutants, degradation of organic pollutants, and mechanisms of photocatalytic activities.

Oil-in-water emulsions, stabilised with conventional surfactants, are commonly used in eye drops for ocular drug delivery. However, the presence of surfactants can sometimes irritate tissues. Furthermore, conventional emulsions often have poor retention on ocular tissue. Pickering emulsions stabilised with nanoparticles have been gaining attention in recent years for a range of biomedical applications because of their biocompatibility. Here, Pickering emulsions were evaluated for the first time for the confinement of organic components for potential application in ocular drug delivery. For a model system, we used nanodiamond (ND) nanoparticles functionalised with covalently-bonded two-tail (2T) oligoglycine C10(NGly4)2 to make Pickering oil-in-water emulsions, which were stable over three months of storage under neutral pH. We proved the non-toxicity of ND-2T Pickering emulsions, comparable to buffer solution, via an ex vivo bovine corneal permeability and opacity test. The retention of the oil phase in the ND-2T stabilised emulsions on corneal tissue is significantly increased because of the mucoadhesive properties arising from the positively-charged terminal amino groups of 2T. Our formulated emulsions have a surface tension, pH and salt concentration comparable to that of tear fluid. The high retention of the ND-2T-stabilised emulsions on the corneal surface, in combination with their non-toxicity, gives them distinct advantages for ocular drug delivery. The principles of this model system could be applied in the future design of a range of formulations for drug delivery.

This study examined the surface morphology and photocatalytic activity of nickel oxide (NiO) nanoparticles prepared through a chemical method. The synthesized nanoparticle was characterized by using spectroscopic and microscopic techniques. Photocatalytic degradation of hazardous Eriochrome Black T (EBT) was carried out using the synthesized nanoparticle and the efficiency of the NiO used was determined. Highest degradation efficiency of 70% at 25 mg loading was observed at 40 min exposure time. The study concluded that the synthesized nanoparticles could be used in industrial wastewater treatment containing organic dyes.

The shape of a liquid-air interface advancing on a heterogeneous surface was studied experimentally, together with the force induced by the pinning of the contact line to surface defects. Different surfaces were considered with circular defects introduced as arrays of cocoa butter patches or small circular holes. These heterogeneous surfaces were submerged in aqueous ethanol solutions while measuring the additional force arising from the deformation of the advancing contact line and characterizing the interface shape and its pinning on the defects. Initially, the submersion force is linear with submerged depth, suggesting a constant defect-induced stiffness. This regime ends when the contact line depins from the defects. A simple scaling is proposed to describe the depinning force and the depinning energy. As the defect separation increases, the interface stiffness is found to increase too, with a weak dependency on the defect radius. This interaction between defects cannot be captured by simple scaling but can be well predicted by a theory considering the interface deformation in the presence of a periodic arrays of holes. Creating a four-phase contact line by including solid defects (cocoa butter) reduced pinning forces. The radius of the defect had a nonlinear effect on the depinning depth. The four-phase contact line resulted in depinning before the defects were fully submerged. These experimental results and the associated theory help to understand quantitatively the extent to which surface heterogeneities can slow down wetting. This in turn paves the way to tailoring the design of heterogeneous surfaces toward desired wetting performances.

Graphene quantum dots which are known as zero-dimensional materials are gaining increasing attention from researchers all over the world. This is predicated upon their relatively unique chemiluminescent, fluorescent, electrochemiluminescent, and electronic properties. The precise mechanism of electrochemiluminescence continues to be a subject of debate in the research world, and this is important in identifying synthetic pathways for graphene quantum dots. Heavy metals and other emerging pollutants are global health and environmental concerns. Several studies have reported the sensitivity and limit of detection of graphene quantum dots up to the nano-, pico-, and femto- levels when used as sensors. This review seeks to bridge information gaps on the reported electrochemiluminescence chemosensors for emerging pollutants using graphene quantum dots under the sub-headings, synthesis, characterization, electrochemiluminescence chemosensor detection, and comparison with other detection methods.

The study sought to investigate the chronology of events and timing of embryogenesis, as well as breeding performances of three strains of Heterobranchus longifilis from Nigeria. Fish samples were collected from Benue River in Makurdi, Niger River in Onitsha, and Rima River in Sokoto for this study. Induced spawning of the strains was carried out so that egg development could be tracked from fertilization to hatching using a simple microscope. The microphotographs obtained showed that the embryogenesis of the strains followed a similar pattern to those of other members of the family Clariidae, however with changes occurring in the specific timing of the sequences of events (i.e. interstrain and interspecies differences). When the different strains were compared, the study noted similarities (P > 0.05) in the overall breeding performance (except for fertilization rate), survival at different stages of development, timing of embryogenesis, and larvae characteristics. The outcomes of this study, therefore, provide baseline information on what genetic improvement of the species through strain crossing can be attempted in future studies.

The South-Asian region including India is a major hub of sugar producing countries with ample presence in the global sugar scenario. India has a rich history of sugarcane and sugar production since time immemorial, and the industry has gradually evolved to find a place among the top sugar producing countries of the world. The innovative technological interventions for sugarcane improvement, production and management have helped the industry to progress towards a diversified and bio-based productive, sustainable and profitable one, thereby gradually becoming self-reliant. This self-reliant industry with the right mix of linkages and collaborations, has been successful in tackling the various unforeseen challenges including those that cropped up during COVID-19 pandemic. The industry also fulfils its Corporate Social Responsibilities leading to the overall betterment of its stakeholders. This has enabled the Indian sugar industry to align itself with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Goals.

BACKGROUND: The cardiovascular health index (CVHI) introduced by the American Heart Association is a valid, accessible, simple, and translatable metric for monitoring cardiovascular health in a population. Components of the CVHI include the following seven cardiovascular risk factors (often captured as life's simple 7): smoking, dietary intake, physical activity, body mass index, blood pressure, glucose, and total cholesterol. We sought to expand the evidence for its utility to under-studied populations in sub-Saharan Africa, by determining its association with common carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT). METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study involving 9011 participants drawn from Burkina Faso, Ghana, Kenya, and South Africa. We assessed established classical cardiovascular risk factors and measured carotid intima-media thickness of the left and right common carotid arteries using B-mode ultrasonography. Adjusted multilevel mixed-effect linear regression was used to determine the association of CVHI with common CIMT. In the combined population, an individual participant data meta-analyses random-effects was used to conduct pooled comparative sub-group analyses for differences between countries, sex, and socio-economic status. RESULTS: The mean age of the study population was 51 ± 7 years and 51% were women, with a mean common CIMT of 637 ± 117 µm and CVHI score of 10.3 ± 2.0. Inverse associations were found between CVHI and common CIMT (ß-coefficients [95% confidence interval]: Burkina Faso, - 6.51 [- 9.83, - 3.20] µm; Ghana, - 5.42 [- 8.90, - 1.95]; Kenya, - 6.58 [- 9.05, - 4.10]; and South Africa, - 7.85 [- 9.65, - 6.05]). Inverse relations were observed for women (- 4.44 [- 6.23, - 2.65]) and men (- 6.27 [- 7.91, - 4.64]) in the pooled sample. Smoking (p < 0.001), physical activity (p < 0.001), and hyperglycemia (p < 0.001) were related to CIMT in women only, while blood pressure and obesity were related to CIMT in both women and men (p < 0.001). CONCLUSION: This large pan-African population study demonstrates that CVHI is a strong marker of subclinical atherosclerosis, measured by common CIMT and importantly demonstrates that primary prevention of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease in this understudied population should target physical activity, smoking, obesity, hypertension, and hyperglycemia.

The 2015 and 2020 ozone holes set record sizes in October-December. We show that these years, as well as other recent large ozone holes, still adhere to a fundamental recovery metric: the later onset of early spring ozone depletion as chlorine and bromine diminishes. This behavior is also captured in the Whole Atmosphere Chemistry Climate Model. We quantify observed recovery trends of the onset of the ozone hole and in the size of the September ozone hole, with good model agreement. A substantial reduction in ozone hole depth during September over the past decade is also seen. Our results indicate that, due to dynamical phenomena, it is likely that large ozone holes will continue to occur intermittently in October-December, but ozone recovery will still be detectable through the later onset, smaller, and less deep September ozone holes: metrics that are governed more by chemical processes.

BACKGROUND: The pharmacological study of mechanoreceptors embedded within tissue is hampered by tissue barriers to applied research drugs. METHODS: Hyaluronidase increases the permeability of tissues and is used clinically to facilitate the distribution of injected drugs. An in vitro rat sinus hair preparation was used to determine whether hyaluronidase (1,500 or 3,000 IU/10 mL) had an effect on drug access to receptor sites on slowly adapting St I and St II mechanoreceptors. Electrical recordings were made from single mechanoreceptor units that were activated by trapezoid ramp stimuli. Cinnamaldehyde (500-1,500 µM) and capsazepine (100 µM) were used as test drugs. Changes in onset time and degree of depression of firing due to test drugs were compared to control experiments not employing hyaluronidase. RESULTS: There were no statistical effects on any of the observed measures. Often the effects were opposite to those predicted. Using a likelihood approach, it was calculated that there was strong evidence (log-likelihood ratios from -0.5 to -6.5) to support a null effect over a facilitatory effect. There was no evidence of loss of integrity of mechanoreceptor mechanotransduction mechanisms following hyaluronidase applications. Comparison with Existing Method: The use of hyaluronidase does not facilitate drug access to receptors. CONCLUSIONS: In the in vitro sinus hair preparation, the addition of hyaluronidase does not allow easier access to slowly adapting mechanoreceptors within the follicle.

Moringa oleifera (MO) is an excellent source of dietary antioxidant. MO is used traditionally to enhance libido and as an aphrodisiac in the treatment of sexual dysfunction. This study aimed to investigate the direct effect of aqueous leaf extract of MO on Leydig cell in vitro. Specifically, the effect of MO on viability, testosterone production, antioxidant activity and lipid peroxidation on TM3 cells were evaluated. TM3 cells seeded for 24 hr were exposed to aqueous leaf extract of MO (0, 10, 50, 100, 250, 500 and 1,000 µg/ml) for 24 hr, in the absence or presence of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG; 6 mIU/200 µl). Cell viability remained unchanged while testosterone production significantly increased at 500 and 1,000 µg/ml of the extract under stimulatory conditions by 34 and 45% respectively. Glutathione level substantially increased at 250 µg/ml, while lipid peroxidation, catalase and superoxide dismutase activity, and total antioxidant capacity remained unchanged. Our results demonstrate the androgenic effect of MO especially at high concentrations in TM3 cells. The androgenic effect may be attributed to its antioxidant enzyme activities.

The Indian sugar industry, a significant player in the national economy, has faced many challenges in the course of its journey. The threat posed by the growing pandemic novel corona virus (COVID-19), has been the most recent one and it is impacting sugar industry stakeholders and its integrated industries, not only in India, but all over the world. The entire value chain of the Indian sugar industry, viz., sugarcane, sugar, molasses, ethanol and their subsequent marketing and export, has been adversely affected from the spillover impacts. The major impacts of COVID-19 on Indian sugar industry are discussed.

BACKGROUND: Statin therapy has been shown to result in coronary plaque regression, but the relationship between statin use and stabilization of coronary plaque has not been elucidated. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate the effect of statin therapy on fibrous cap thickness (FCT) on optical coherence tomography (OCT).Methods and Results:Nine OCT studies (6 randomized controlled trials and 3 observational studies) were enrolled with a total of 341 patients (390 lesions). Arms of the studies were grouped according to statin type and/or dose. Random effects meta-analysis was used to estimate a pooled mean change in FCT from baseline to follow-up. The overall effect mean FCT change was 67.7 µm (95% CI: 51.4-84.1, I2=95.0%, P<0.001). All statin groups had an increase in FCT, but the magnitude of the increase differed according to the statin. Two homogeneous subgroups with I2=0 were identified: mean FCT change was 27.8 µm (for subgroup atorvastatin 5 mg and rosuvastatin), and 61.9 µm (for subgroup atorvastatin 20 mg, fluvastatin 30 mg, and pitavastatin 4 mg). On meta-regression modeling, statin therapy alone explained most of the change in FCT. CONCLUSIONS: Statin therapy induced a significant increase in FCT as assessed on OCT, independent of coronary risk factors and other medications.

Myeloablative chemotherapy administered prior to autologous stem cell transplantation (auto-SCT) is associated with a significant amount of chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV). We conducted a phase II trial to assess the safety, efficacy, and impact on quality of life when palonosetron (PAL) 0.25 mg combined with dexamethasone were given on the final or only day of myeloablative chemotherapy for auto-SCT. The primary end point of this study was the incidence of achieving a delayed CINV complete response defined as no emetic episode and no use of rescue medications during the 24-120 h period post chemotherapy. Eighty-five patients were enrolled in the study and received PAL. A delayed CINV complete response was achieved in 15% of patients. A multivariate analysis demonstrated no associated differences between age, gender, diagnosis, or regimen. By day 5 after PAL, the mean nausea severity was 0.91 ± 2.45 vs. 0.09 ± 1.58 at baseline (p = 0.012). Quality of life measurements demonstrated similar quality of life between baseline and day 3. By day 6 however, nausea alone had a statistically significant impact on quality of life. In our study, PAL controlled nausea severity and sustained quality of life, but further strategies are needed to control delayed CINV associated with the auto-SCT process.

The study aimed to determine the prevalence of occult hepatitis B virus infection among HIV-infected persons and to evaluate the use of a pooling strategy to detect occult HBV infection in the setting of HIV infection. Five hundred and two HIV-positive individuals were tested for HBV, occult HBV and hepatitis C and D with serologic and nucleic acid testing (NAT). We also evaluated a pooled NAT strategy for screening occult HBV infection among the HIV-positive individuals. The prevalence of HBV infection among HIV-positive individuals was 32 (6.4%), and occult HBV prevalence was 10%. The pooling HBV NAT had a sensitivity of 66.7% and specificity of 100%, compared to HBV DNA NAT of individual samples. In conclusion, this study found a high prevalence of occult HBV infection among our HIV-infected population. We also demonstrated that pooled HBV NAT is highly specific, moderately sensitive and cost-effective. As conventional HBV viral load assays are expensive in resource-limited settings such as India, pooled HBV DNA NAT might be a good way for detecting occult HBV infection and will reduce HBV-associated complications.

We assessed the feasibility of field-based directly observed therapy (DOT) with minimal monitoring to deliver HCV treatment to people with a history of drug use in Chennai, India. Fifty participants were randomized 1:1 to sofosbuvir+peginterferon alfa 2a+ribavirin (SOF+PR) for 12 weeks (Arm 1) vs sofosbuvir+ribavirin (SOF+R) for 24 weeks (Arm 2). SOF+R was delivered daily at participant chosen venues and weekly peginterferon injections at the study clinic. HCV RNA testing was performed to confirm active HCV infection and sustained virologic response 12 weeks after treatment completion (SVR12). No baseline genotyping or on-treatment viral loads were performed. Median age was 46 years. All were male and 20% had significant fibrosis/cirrhosis. All self-reported history of injection drug use, 18% recent noninjection drug use and 38% alcohol dependence. Six discontinued treatment (88% completed treatment in each arm). Of 22 who completed SOF+PR, all achieved SVR12 (22/25=88%); 15 of 22 who completed SOF+R achieved SVR12 (15/25=60%; P=.05). Among those completing SOF+R, SVR12 was significantly less common in participants reporting ongoing substance use (36% vs 100%) and missed doses. Active substance use and missed doses did not impact SVR with SOF+PR. Field-based DOT of HCV therapy without real-time HCV RNA monitoring was feasible; however, achieving 100% adherence was challenging. SOF+PR appeared superior to SOF+R in achieving SVR12, even when doses were missed with no discontinuations due to side effects. Further exploration of short duration treatment with peginterferon plus direct-acting antivirals is warranted.

INTRODUCTION: Lenalidomide is a thalidomide analog with anti-angiogenic properties. Previous case reports suggest its efficacy in preventing gastrointestinal bleeding (GIB) secondary to angiodysplasia (AD) in hereditary haemorrhagic telangiectasia and potentially in reversing AD. We present the first case series to explore lenalidomide as a treatment for AD-related GIB in patients with von Willebrand disease (VWD). METHODS: A retrospective chart review was conducted to include patients with VWD, who were evaluated from 2010 to 2013 and who had received lenalidomide to treat recurrent GIB secondary to AD. All patients had failed single-agent use of antifibrinolytic agents. Patients were observed for at least 2 years on therapy. RESULTS: Five patients (3 males; 68.2 ± 4.9 years) with VWD (3 with type 3 and 1 each with types 1 and 2a) and AD were found. Sites of AD included the stomach, duodenum, jejunum and colon. Lenalidomide was started at 5 mg oral daily. Uptitration to 10 and 15 mg in 1 patient each was necessary due to recurrence of GIB. The mean number of endoscopies performed for control of GIB post lenalidomide was significantly lower compared to pretherapy (0.25 vs 5.50; P = .001). Mean bleed-free duration on lenalidomide was 12.6 ± 4.7 months. Three patients have reported no GIB on lenalidomide. CONCLUSION: This case series demonstrates significantly reduced number of endoscopies and increased bleed-free duration with lenalidomide treatment in selected patients with VWD and recurrent GIB from AD. Prospective multicenter trials are needed to further define the role of lenalidomide in the management of GIB from angiodysplasia and VWD.

AIM: To evaluate arterial cone-beam computed tomography (A-CBCT) automated analysis software for identification of vessels supplying tumours during transarterial hepatic embolisation (TAE). MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study was approved by the institutional review board, with waiver of consent. Consecutive TAE procedures using arterial mapping software (AMS), and performed between February 2014 and August 2014, were reviewed. Hepatic arteries were imaged using digital subtraction angiography (DSA) as well as A-CBCT processed with AMS. Interventional radiologists reported1 potential embolisation target vessels computed using AMS versus DSA alone,2 modification of the embolisation plan based on AMS, and3 operator confidence related to technical success. Imaging set-up, processing time, radiation dose, and contrast media volume were recorded. RESULTS: Thirty of 34 consecutive procedures were evaluated retrospectively. At least one additional embolisation target vessel was identified using AMS in 13 procedures (43%, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 26-61%) and embolisation plan modified in 11 (37%, 95% CI: 19-54%). Radiologists reported AMS increased operator confidence and reduced the number of DSA acquisitions in 25 (83%, 95% CI: 70-97%) and 15 cases (50%, 95% CI: 32-68%), respectively. The average A-CBCT acquisition and processing time was 4 minutes 53 seconds and 3 minutes 45 seconds, respectively. A-CBCT contributed to 11% of the radiation dose and 18% of the contrast media volume. CONCLUSION: Physicians report increased tumour supplying vessel detection and intraprocedural confidence using AMS during TAE without substantial impact on radiation dose, contrast media volume, and procedure time.

Cystatin C and beta-2-microglobulin (B2M) are filtration markers associated with adverse outcomes in nontransplant populations, sometimes with stronger associations than for creatinine. We evaluated associations of estimated glomerular filtration rate from cystatin C (eGFRcys ), B2M (eGFRB2M ), and creatinine (eGFRcr ) with cardiovascular outcomes, mortality, and kidney failure in stable kidney transplant recipients using a case-cohort study nested within the Folic Acid for Vascular Outcome Reduction in Transplantation (FAVORIT) Trial. A random subcohort was selected (N = 508; mean age 51.6 years, median transplant vintage 4 years, 38% women, 23.6% nonwhite race) with enrichment for cardiovascular events (N = 306; 54 within the subcohort), mortality (N = 208; 68 within the subcohort), and kidney failure (N = 208; 52 within the subcohort). Mean eGFRcr , eGFRcys , and eGFRB2M were 46.0, 43.8, and 48.8 mL/min/1.73m2 , respectively. After multivariable adjustment, hazard ratios for eGFRcys and eGFRB2M <30 versus 60+ were 2.02 (95% confidence interval [CI] 1.09-3.76; p = 0.03) and 2.56 (1.35-4.88; p = 0.004) for cardiovascular events; 3.92 (2.11-7.31) and 4.09 (2.21-7.54; both p < 0.001) for mortality; and 9.49 (4.28-21.00) and 15.53 (6.99-34.51; both p < 0.001) for kidney failure. Associations persisted with additional adjustment for baseline eGFRcr . We conclude that cystatin C and B2M are strongly associated with cardiovascular events, mortality, and kidney failure in stable kidney transplant recipients.

PURPOSE: To compare exophthalmos reduction in lateral orbital decompressions performed via rim sparing versus temporary rim removal techniques. METHODS: The authors performed a retrospective chart review of all patients who underwent simple lateral or combined medial and lateral wall orbital decompression between 2005 and 2013 by a single surgeon. Nineteen patients (33 orbits) were identified for inclusion in the study. Decompression procedures (1 or 2 orbital walls) involved either a rim sparing or a temporary rim removal technique. Preoperatively, all patients had stable exophthalmos defined as ≤1 mm change in exophthalmos over 2 consecutive visits. Measurements were taken again at the 3 to 4 months postoperative visit. Exclusion criteria were acute or unstable exophthalmos, exophthalmos secondary to malignancy, and patients lost to follow up. RESULTS: There were no significant differences in exophthalmos reduction for rim sparing versus temporary rim removal techniques in any of the groups studied. Simple lateral decompression procedures achieved 3.7 and 4.4 mm of exophthalmos reduction in rim sparing versus temporary rim removal techniques, respectively (P = 0.49). Exophthalmos reduction in combined medial and lateral wall orbital decompression was 4.1 mm for rim sparing and 3.5 mm for temporary rim removal techniques (P = 0.75). CONCLUSION: In our experience, orbital decompression approached through rim sparing or temporary rim removal techniques achieves similar results in simple lateral and combined medial and lateral decompressions. Though these techniques generate similar outcomes, temporary rim removal provides for improved visibility and access to deep orbital structures.
