RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: We aimed to evaluate the clinical applicability of a new scoring system that comprises the variables age, sex, pepsinogen ratio (PGR), gastrin-17 (G-17), and Helicobacter pylori (Hp) infection for gastric cancer (GC) screening in the Wannan region, China. We also explored the risk factors of GC in the Wannan region. METHODS: We prospectively enrolled asymptomatic participants from January 1, 2019 to June 30, 2021 at the First Affiliated Hospital of Wannan Medical College. We used a receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve to estimate the screening value of combined measurements of pepsinogen I, PGII, PGR, G-17, and Hp. Univariate analysis and multivariate analysis were used to explore the independent risk factors of GC. RESULTS: A total of 25,194 asymptomatic patients were eventually screened. The area under the ROC curve (AUC) of combined measurements was 0.817 (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.721-0.913), the sensitivity was 81.5%, and the specificity was 77.8%. The detection rate of this new scoring system for GC screening in low-, medium-, and high-risk groups was 0%, 1.63%, and 9%, respectively (P < 0.001). Multivariate analysis showed that age (odds ratio [OR], 5.934; 95% CI 3.695-9.529; P < 0.001), sex (OR 5.721; 95% CI 2.579-12.695; P < 0.001), Hp infection (OR 1.992; 95% CI 1.255-3.163; P = 0.003), a history of smoking (OR 2.028; 95% CI 1.213-3.392; P = 0.007), consuming a high-salt diet (OR 2.877; 95% CI 1.807-4.580; P < 0.001), frequently eating pickled foods (OR 1.873; 95% CI 1.125-3.120; P = 0.016), and frequently eating fried foods (OR 2.459; 95% CI 1.384-4.369; P = 0.002) were independent risk factors for GC and precancerous lesions. However, frequent consumption of green vegetables (OR 0.388; 95% CI 0.242-0.620; P < 0.001) was an independent protective factor against GC and precancerous lesions. CONCLUSION: The new scoring system for GC screening was feasible in the Wannan region, especially in high-risk populations. Frequent consumption of green vegetables was an independent protective factor against GC and precancerous lesions.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND This study was designed to predict prognosis of patients with primary duodenal neuroendocrine neoplasms (D-NENs) by developing nomograms. MATERIAL AND METHODS Patients diagnosed with D-NENs between 1988 and 2015 were queried from the SEER database and a total of 965 appropriate cases were randomly separated into the training and validation sets. Kaplan-Meier analysis was used to generated survival curves, and the difference among the groups was assessed by the log-rank test. Independent prognostic indicators were acquired by Cox regression analysis, and were used to develop predictive overall survival (OS) and cancer-specific survival (CSS) nomograms. Harrell's concordance index (C-index), area under the curve (AUC), calibration curves, and decision curve analysis (DCA) were used to assess the efficacy of nomograms. Tumor stage was regarded as a benchmark in predicting prognostic compared with the nomograms built in this study. RESULTS The C-index was 0.739 (0.690-0.788) and 0.859 (0.802-0.916) for OS and CSS nomograms, respectively. Calibration curves exhibited obvious consistency between the nomograms and the actual observations. In addition, C-index, AUC, and DCA were better than tumor stage in the evaluative performance of nomograms. CONCLUSIONS The nomograms were able to predict the 1-, 5-, and 10-year OS and CSS for D-NENs patients. The good performance of these nomograms suggest that they can be used for evaluating the prognosis of patients with D-NENs and can facilitate individualized treatment in clinical practice.

RESUMEN

Non-cancer deaths are now becoming a great threat to the health of cancer survivors. There are no comprehensive and systematic reports on chronic liver disease and cirrhosis mortality (CLDCM) among patients with digestive system cancers (DSCs). This research aimed to quantitatively assess the risks and patterns of CLDCM among patients with DSCs. From the surveillance, epidemiology and end results (SEER) program, we extracted the data of patients diagnosed with DSCs between 2000 and 2017. Trends in incidence-based mortality rate (IBMR) were calculated using Joinpoint software. The standardized mortality ratio (SMR) was obtained based on the reference of the general United States population. The cumulative incidence function curves were constructed by all causes of death. Independent indicators were identified using the multivariate Fine and Gray competing risk model. We included 906,292 eligible patients from the SEER program, of which 3068 (0.34%) died from chronic liver disease and cirrhosis (CLDC). The IBMR of CLDC continued to increase during the study period [average annual percent change (APC): 6.7%; 95% confidence interval (CI) 5.1-8.2] and the SMR was significantly increased (SMR: 3.19; 95% CI 3.08-3.30). The cumulative mortality of CLDC was the lowest in all causes of death. Furthermore, the age at diagnosis, race, gender, marital status, year of diagnosis, SEER stage, surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy were identified as independent indicators. Better screening, diagnostic and management approaches need to be implemented as a preferred method to protect the liver among patients with DSCs.

RESUMEN

Solar-driven interfacial evaporation has enormous promise for fresh water recovery and salt harvesting, but salt accumulation-related challenges stand in its way. Herein, we report a spined groove-ridge pairs inspired by the shell ornamentation of the Vasticardium vertebratum, which addresses salt accumulation by artfully integrating salt reflux into localized salt crystallization. The seashell-mimetic radial V-groove array enables the 3D evaporator to transport water rapidly and directionally, resulting in high-performance water evaporation (∼95% efficiency) and localized crystallization. The periodic spines enlightened by the spine-bearing ridge on the seashell provide considerable micro-unit salt reflux. The 2-in-1 integration design endows the three-dimensional evaporator with superior solar-driven zero liquid discharge and excellent long-term salt resistance even when dealing with high-salinity brine (20 wt% NaCl) and a series of heavy metallic salt solutions. Our design offers a new alternative solution to avoiding salt scaling and could advance locally crystallized solar evaporators towards practical applications.

RESUMEN

The use of functional biodegradable wastes to treat environmental problems would create minimal extra burden to our environment. In this paper, we propose a sustainable and practical strategy to turn spent coffee ground (SCG) into a multifunctional palladium-loaded catalyst for water treatment instead of going into landfill as solid waste. Bleached delignified coffee ground (D-SCG) has a porous structure and a good capability to reduce Pd (II) to Pd (0). A large amount of nanocellulose is formed on the surface of SCG after bleaching by H2O2, which anchors and disperses the palladium nanoparticles (Pd NPs). The D-SCG loaded with Pd NPs (Pd-D-SCG) is superhydrophilic, which facilitates water transport and thus promotes efficient removal of organic pollutants dissolved in water. Pd-D-SCG exhibits excellent room temperature catalytic activity for the removal of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) and methylene blue (MB) in water and shows good chemical stability and recyclability in water, with no obvious decrease even after five repeated cycles.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: This research is aimed to explore mortality patterns and quantitatively assess the risks of cardiovascular mortality (CVM) in patients with primary gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine neoplasms (GEP-NENs). METHODS: We extracted data from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database for patients diagnosed with GEP-NENs between 2000 and 2015. The standardized mortality ratio (SMR) and the absolute excess risk were obtained based on the reference of the general US population. The cumulative incidence function curves were constructed for all causes of death. Predictors for CVM were identified using a multivariate competing risk model. RESULTS: Overall, 42027 patients were enrolled from the SEER database, of whom 1598 (3.8%) died from cardiovascular disease (CVD). The SMR for CVM was 1.20 (95% CI: 1.14-1.26) among GEP-NEN patients. The cumulative mortality of CVD was the lowest among all causes of death, including primary cancer, other cancer, and other noncancer diseases. Furthermore, age at diagnosis, race, Hispanic origin, sex, marital status, year of diagnosis, grade, education level, region, SEER stage, primary site, surgery, and chemotherapy were identified as independent predictors of CVM in GEP-NEN patients. CONCLUSIONS: GEP-NEN patients have a significantly increased risk of CVM relative to the general population. Cardioprotective interventions might be considered a preferred method for these patients.

RESUMEN

Functional fillers in three-dimensional (3D) printing composite filaments offer an innovative way spent coffee grounds (SCGs) can be reused. However, the inherent brownness of SCGs places a limit on the color in which the composite filament and, consequently, the finished print appears. Herein, colored composite filaments for fused deposition modeling were successfully fabricated, where micro/nano-structured decolorized SCGs (MN-DSCGs) were embedded within polylactic acid (PLA) matrix. At the optimum condition, the 3D prints using composite filaments exhibit comparable tensile and flexural strength to the PLA counterparts. Also, they demonstrate superior melt flow and excellent print quality. Under the same condition, 3D printed MN-DSCGs/PLA blend has sufficient color restoration as compared to the prints using virgin PLA.

RESUMEN

Liver cancer (LC) is the fourth leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide. There is an urgent need to identify novel and reliable prognostic biomarkers for LC in order to improve patient outcomes. N6-methyladenosine (m6A) is the most common internal modification in eukaryotic mRNA and has been associated with various cancers, although its roles in the prognosis of LC remains to be elucidated. We analyzed the expression profiles of 15 m6A-related genes in the International Cancer Genome Consortium (ICGC) LIRI-JP dataset, and applied consensus clustering to stratify LC patients into two subgroups (Cluster 1 and Cluster 2). Cluster1 was significantly correlated to lower tumor stage and longer overall survival (OS). Gene set enrichment analysis showed that tumorigenic markers, including DNA repair, E2F targets, G2M checkpoint, and MYC targets V1, were enriched in Cluster2. We then constructed a prognostic risk model using three m6A-related genes that were identified as independent factors affecting OS. The nomogram based on the risk model score indicated good performance in predicting the 1-, 2- and 3-year survival of the LC patients. In conclusion, m6A-related genes are potential prognostic markers and therapeutic targets for LC.
