The traditional analysis method for super multi-view 3D display based on geometric optics, which approximates the lenticular lenses as a series of pinhole structures, ignored the chromatic aberration. In this paper, the optimization method based on diffraction theory is proposed for super multi-view 3D display, where the wavefronts are evaluated accurately by the forward propagation method, and the chromatic aberration of the synthetic viewpoint image is reduced dramatically by the backward reconstruction optimization method (BROM). The optical experiment is performed to verify the feasibility of the method, which is consistent with numerical simulation results. It is proved that the proposed method simulates the physical propagation process of super multi-view 3D display and improves the reconstructed image quality. In the future, it can be used to achieve the super multi-view 3D light field technology with low crosstalk.

BACKGROUND: Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infections is an important public health problem worldwide and closely affect extrahepatic cancer. Several recent studies have investigated the relationship between HBV infection and head and neck cancer (HNC), but their findings were inconsistent.In order to address the limitations of small sample sizes, we conducted a meta-analysis to assess the association between HBV and HNC. METHODS: We systematically searched PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, Scopus, Cochrane Library, and China National Knowledge Infrastructure from inception to August 2023. Original articles published as a case-control or cohort study were included. HBV infection was identified by HBsAg, HBV DNA or ICD codes. Review articles, meeting abstracts, case reports, communications, editorials and letters were excluded, as were studies in a language other than English or Chinese. According to the MOOSE guidelines, frequencies reported for all dichotomous variables were extracted by two reviewers independently. Similarly, the outcomes of OR, RR or HR, and 95% CIs after adjusting for age and gender were collected. RESULTS: Thirteen relevant studies and 58,006 patients with HNC were included. Our analysis revealed a positive correlation between HBV and HNC (OR = 1.50; 95% CI: 1.28-1.77). After adjusting for age and gender, the similar result (OR = 1.30; 95% CI: 1.10-1.54) was obtained. Subgroup analysis further demonstrated a significant association between HBV infection and oral cancer (OR = 1.24; 95% CI: 1.05-1.47), as well as nasopharyngeal carcinoma (OR = 1.41; 95% CI: 1.26-1.58). However, due to the limited number of studies included, the statistical significance was not reached for cancer of the oropharynx (OR = 1.82; 95% CI: 0.66-5.05), hypopharynx (OR = 1.33; 95% CI: 0.88-2.00), and larynx (OR = 1.25; 95% CI: 0.69-2.24) after adjusting for age and gender. When excluding the interference of HIV/HCV, smoking and alcohol use, the final outcome (OR = 1.17; 95% CI: 1.01-1.35) got the same conclusion. CONCLUSIONS: Our study confirmed a positive relationship between HNC, specifically oral cancer and nasopharyngeal carcinoma, and HBV infection. However, further investigation is required at the molecular level to gather additional evidence in HNC.

Cisplatin (DDP) is a prevalent chemotherapeutic agent used in tumor therapy, yet DDP-induced acute kidney injury (AKI) severely limits its clinical application. Antioxidants as reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavengers can circumvent this adverse effect while leading to the decrease of efficacy to tumor. Herein, we report ultrasmall ruthenium nanoparticles (URNPs) as switchable ROS scavengers/generators to alleviate DDP-induced AKI and improve its therapeutic efficacy. In the physiological environment of the kidney, URNPs mimic multi-enzyme activities, such as superoxide dismutase and catalase, effectively protecting the renal cell and tissue by down-regulating the increased ROS level caused by DDP and alleviating AKI. Specifically, URNPs are oxidized by high levels of H2O2 in the tumor microenvironment (TME), resulting in the generation of oxygen vacancies and Ru3+/Ru4+ ions. This unique structure transformation endows URNPs to generate singlet oxygen (1O2) under laser irradiation and hydroxyl radicals (âOH) through a Fenton-like reaction in tumor cell and tissue. The simultaneous generation of multifarious ROS effectively improves the efficacy of DDP in vitro and in vivo. This TME-responsive ROS scavenger/generator acts as an adjuvant therapeutic agent to minimize side effects and improve the efficacy of chemotherapy drugs, providing a new avenue to chemotherapy and facilitating clinical tumor therapy.

Mural paintings, as the main components of painted cultural relics, have essential research value and historical significance. Due to their age, murals are easily damaged. Obtaining intact sketches is the first step in the conservation and restoration of murals. However, sketch extraction often suffers from problems such as loss of details, too thick lines, or noise interference. To overcome these problems, a mural sketch extraction method based on image enhancement and edge detection is proposed. The experiments utilize Contrast Limited Adaptive Histogram Equalization (CLAHE) and bilateral filtering to enhance the mural images. This can enhance the edge features while suppressing the noise generated by over-enhancement. Finally, we extract the refined sketch of the mural using the Laplacian Edge with fine noise remover (FNR). The experimental results show that this method is superior to other methods in terms of visual effect and related indexes, and it can extract the complex line regions of the mural.

This paper proposes a method that utilizes a dual neural network model to address the challenges posed by aberration in the integral imaging microlens array (MLA) and the degradation of 3D image quality. The approach involves a cascaded dual convolutional neural network (CNN) model designed to handle aberration pre-correction and image quality restoration tasks. By training these models end-to-end, the MLA aberration is corrected effectively and the image quality of integral imaging is enhanced. The feasibility of the proposed method is validated through simulations and optical experiments, using an optimized, high-quality pre-corrected element image array (EIA) as the image source for 3D display. The proposed method achieves high-quality integral imaging 3D display by alleviating the contradiction between MLA aberration and 3D image resolution reduction caused by system noise without introducing additional complexity to the display system.

In lens-based display systems, lens aberrations and depth of field (DoF) limitation often lead to blurring and distortion of reconstructed images; Meanwhile, expanding the display DoF will face a trade-off between horizontal resolution and axial resolution, restricting the achievement of high-resolution and large DoF three-dimensional (3D) displays. To overcome these constraints and enhance the DoF and resolution of reconstructed scenes, we propose a DoF expansion method based on diffractive optical element (DOE) optimization and image pre-correction through a convolutional neural network (CNN). This method applies DOE instead of the conventional lens and optimizes DOE phase distribution using the Adam algorithm, achieving depth-invariant and concentrated point spread function (PSF) distribution throughout the entire DoF range; Simultaneously, we utilize a CNN to pre-correct the original images and compensate for the image quality reduction introduced by the DOE. The proposed method is applied to a practical integral imaging system, we effectively extend the DoF of the DOE to 400 mm, leading to a high-resolution 3D display in multiple depth planes. To validate the effectiveness and practicality of the proposed method, we conduct numerical simulations and optical experiments.

Ferroptosis is a form of regulated cell death characterized by the accumulation of lipid peroxides in an iron-dependent manner. Ferroptotic cell death is modulated by many metabolic pathways, such as pathways governing the metabolism of sugars, lipids, amino acids, and iron, as well as mitochondrial activity and redox homeostasis. Tumor metastasis and therapy resistance are the main obstacles to curing cancers. Because tumor cells usually exhibit higher iron dependence than normal cells, they may be more susceptible to ferroptosis despite being resistant to other forms of cell death. Moreover, recent evidence has suggested that ferroptosis is involved in tumor-host interactions, modulates the tumor microenvironment, and serves as an antimetastatic mechanism. Thus, inducing ferroptosis in tumor cells has the potential to improve cancer treatment. Here, we review ferroptosis-regulating mechanisms and the roles of ferroptosis in malignant progression, including the tumor-host interactions, metastasis, and cancer therapy response.

BACKGROUND: Donkey meat has low fat and high protein contents and is rich in various unsaturated fatty acids and trace elements that are beneficial to human digestion and absorption. IMF (intramuscular fat), also known as marbling, is an important indicator of the lean meat to fat ratio, which directly affects the tenderness and juiciness of the meat. At present, the underlying molecular variations affecting IMF content among donkey breeds are unclear. The Guangling donkey is an indigenous species in China. This study explored candidate regulatory genes that affect IMF content in Guangling donkeys. The IMF content of the longissimus dorsi muscle in 30 Guangling donkeys was measured. Six donkeys of similar age were selected according to age factors and divided into two groups, the high (H) and low (L) fat groups, according to their IMF content. RESULTS: RNA-seq technology was used to compare the muscle transcriptome between the two groups. More than 75.0% of alternative splicing (AS) events were of the skipped exon (SE) type. A total of 887 novel genes were identified; only 386 novel genes were aligned to the annotation information of various databases. Transcriptomics analysis revealed 167 differentially expressed genes (DEGs), of which 64 were upregulated and 103 were downregulated between the H and L groups. Gene ontology analysis showed that the DEGs were enriched in multiple biological processes and pathways that are related to adipocyte differentiation, lipid synthesis, and neutral lipid metabolism. KEGG pathway analysis suggested that arachidonic acid metabolism, the HIF-1 signalling pathway, fructose and mannose metabolism, glycerophospholipid metabolism, and the AMPK signalling pathway were involved in lipid deposition. In addition, a gene-gene interaction network was constructed that revealed that the DEGs, including SCD, LEPR, CIDEA, DLK1, DGAT2, ITGAL, HMOX1, WNT10B, and DGKA, had significant roles in adipocyte differentiation and adipogenesis. The selected DEGs were further validated by qRT-PCR. CONCLUSION: This study improves the in-depth understanding of gene regulation and protein expression regarding IMF deposition and lays a basis for subsequent molecular breeding studies in Guangling donkeys.

In this Letter, we introduce a multiplexing encoding method with a bandwidth constraint strategy to realize a color dynamic holographic display based on complex amplitude modulation (CAM). The method first uses the angular spectrum method (ASM) with a bandwidth constraint strategy to calculate the diffracted wavefronts of red, green, and blue channels. Then the diffracted wavefronts of three channels are synthesized into a color-multiplexed hologram (CMH) based on the double-phase method after they interfere with off-axis reference lights. The color 3D objects can be reconstructed when the combination of red, green, and blue lights is used to illuminate the double-phase CMH, and a 4f system with a slit filter is introduced to extract the desired spectrums. Numerical simulations and optical experiments are performed to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method and the results show that it can achieve a color holographic display with high quality. Our proposal is simple and fast, and the display system is compact. It is expected that our proposed method could in future be widely used in the holographic field.

In this Letter, we introduce a computer-generated hologram (CGH) optimization method to enhance the depth cue based on complex amplitude modulation (CAM). An iterative algorithm is designed to generate the optimized random phase (ORAP) according to the size of the target image and the bandwidth limitation condition. The ORAP with limited bandwidth is used as the initial phase of the target image and the hologram is encoded based on the analytical formula. Our proposal can maintain the advantages of CAM and achieve holographic three-dimensional (3D) display with an enhanced depth cue. It is expected that the proposed method could be widely used in holographic field in the future.

Refractory recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RRAS) manifests as severe ulcerative lesions of the oral mucosa with poor healing and a poor response to conventional therapy, with or without systemic diseases. Its treatment remains a clinical challenge owing to the lack of effective therapies. Recently, biologics have emerged as promising targeted therapies for RRAS. The biologics targeting specific inflammatory pathways involved in the pathogenesis of RRAS, including tumor necrosis factor-alpha inhibitors and interleukin inhibitors, offer a more precise and promising therapeutic approach for RRAS. These targeted therapies have been shown to promote healing and decrease recurrence frequency in, and improve the quality of life of patients with RRAS. Herein, the types and mechanisms of biologics currently used to treat RRAS have been reviewed; furthermore, the dose, duration, therapeutic efficacy, and adverse effects of RRAS with or without certain associated systemic diseases, and the current problems and future directions have been discussed.

BACKGROUND: Fractional flow reserve (FFR) is considered to be the criterion standard for the clinical diagnosis of functional myocardial ischemia. In this study, we explored the effect of the coronary arterial diameter derived from coronary computed tomography angiography on FFR. METHOD: We retrospectively reviewed the clinical information of 131 patients with moderate coronary artery stenosis. To compare the mean diameter of stenotic vessels, patients were divided into ischemic and nonischemic groups. According to the clinical statistics of the diameter of the ischemic group and the nonischemic group, we established 8 ideal models of coronary artery diameter of 4 mm (40%, 50%, 60%, and 70% stenosis) and diameter of 3 mm (40%, 50%, 60%, and 70% stenosis). Two sets of numerical simulation experiments were carried out: experiment 1 evaluated the variation rate of CT-based computation of non-invasive fractional flow reserve (FFRCT) with vessel diameters of 4 mm and 3 mm under different stenosis rates, and experiment 2 explored the variation of FFRCT with vessel diameters of 4 mm and 3 mm under different cardiac outputs. We simulated changes in the flow of narrow blood vessels by changes in cardiac output. RESULTS: According to clinical statistics, the mean ± SD diameter of stenotic vessels in the ischemic and nonischemic groups was 3.67 ± 0.77 mm and 3.31 ± 0.64 mm (P < 0.05 for difference), respectively. In experiment 1, the FFRCT of coronary with a diameter of 4 mm was 0.86, 0.80, 0.66, and 0.35, and that with a diameter of 3 mm was 0.90, 0.84, 0.71, and 0.50, respectively. In experiment 2, the FFRCT of the coronary vessel diameter of 4 mm was 0.84, 0.80, 0.76, and 0.72, respectively. The FFRCT coronary vessels with a diameter of 3 mm were 0.87, 0.84, 0.80, and 0.76, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: As the stenosis increases, compared with narrow blood vessel of small diameter, the narrow blood vessel with larger diameter is accompanied by faster flow rate changes and is more prone to ischemia.

OBJECTIVES: Oral lichen planus, a chronic inflammatory immune disease, occurs in the oral mucosa. We aimed to assess the prevalence and possible influencing factors of oral lichen planus in patients with diabetes mellitus. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: This cross-sectional study involved 525 patients with diabetes mellitus and 525 controls. We collected information on blood glucose level, duration of diabetes, diabetic complications, treatment methods, other systemic diseases and medication history. RESULTS: Oral lichen planus was significantly more prevalent in the diabetes mellitus/type 2 diabetes mellitus group than in the controls (2.3%/2.2% vs. 0.6%, p = 0.019/0.022). There was no significant association between patients with diabetes mellitus with and those without oral lichen planus in age (p = 0.195), sex (p = 0.390), blood glucose level (p = 1), duration of diabetes (p = 0.638), diabetic complications (p = 1), treatment methods (p = 0.962), other systemic diseases (p = 0.891) and medication history (p = 0.848). CONCLUSIONS: Diabetes mellitus was associated with oral lichen planus; there was a higher prevalence of oral lichen planus in patients with diabetes mellitus/type 2 diabetes mellitus than in those without diabetes. Oral lichen planus development in patients with diabetes mellitus was not significantly associated with age, sex, blood glucose level, duration of diabetes, diabetic complications, treatment methods, other systemic diseases and medication history.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the comparative efficacy and safety of topical administration for oral lichen planus. MATERIALS AND METHODS: An electronic database search (1st January 1946 to 1st May 2020) for randomised controlled trials identified 34 studies involving eight interventions (clobetasol, betamethasone, triamcinolone, dexamethasone, fluocinolone, tacrolimus, pimecrolimus, and cyclosporine); these studies were subjected to network meta-analysis using direct and indirect comparisons [efficacy indicators: clinical response rate, symptom-reducing effect (visual analogue scale score), sign-reducing effect (Thongprasom-scale score) and relapse; safety indicator: adverse event occurrence]. RESULTS: Compared with placebo, tacrolimus had the best clinical response rate (odds ratio (OR), 57.78 [95% CI 3.15-1060.52]; P-score, 0.8654) and cyclosporine had the worst (OR, 3.61[95% CI 0.20-66.62]; P-score, 0.2236); tacrolimus had the best symptom-reducing effect (standardised mean difference (SMD), 1.06 [95% CI 0.41-1.71]; P-score, 0.9323) and fluocinolone had the worst (SMD, -0.54 [95% CI -1.44-0.36]; P-score, 0.0157); dexamethasone had the best sign-reducing effect (SMD, 3.60 [95% CI 1.74-5.45]; P-score, 0.8306) and clobetasol had the worst (SMD, 2.63 [95% CI 1.66-3.61]; P-score, 0.2581); and pimecrolimus performed best (OR, 0.04 [95% CI 0.00-0.64]; P-score, 0.9227) and clobetasol performed the worst [OR, 0.60; 95% CI 0.15-2.45; P-score, 0.2545] in reducing relapse. Regarding safety, dexamethasone was the safest compared with placebo [OR, 0.37; 95% CI 0.05-2.57; P-score, 0.9337), whereas fluocinolone ranked low for safety [OR, 9.48; 95% CI 1.50- 60.03; P-score, 0.1189]. CONCLUSIONS: The relative ranking of topical administration varies according to the different indicators. Based on the joint consideration of clinical response rate and adverse event occurrence, dexamethasone, triamcinolone and betamethasone are recommended for better efficacy and safety. The optimal treatment for oral lichen patients varies under different conditions.

Polysaccharides supply energy for various metabolic processes in cells. However, their roles in the arsenate (As(V)) resistance in microalgae remain largely unknown. Here, we explored the synthesis and transformation of polysaccharides in Chlamydomonas reinhardtii upon various levels of As(V) stress, using a number of physiological indexes along with transmission electron microscopic (TEM) and proteomic analyses. When exposed to low concentration of As(V) (0-20 µg/L), C. reinhardtii accumulated starch and produced more extracellular polysaccharides. At 50 µg/L As(V) treatment, starch accumulation gradually shifted to polysaccharides decomposition in the algal cells. Under higher As(V) concentration (500 µg/L), significantly more proteins in fatty acid metabolic pathway were differentially expressed, indicating that cells redirected carbon flux and transformed lipids into polysaccharides. The findings of this study demonstrate that polysaccharides may be critically involved in the As(V) resistance of C. reinhardtii.

Arsenic (As) and lead (Pb) are frequently emitted from various sources into environment, but microbial responses to their combined toxicity have not been systematically investigated. In this study, Chlamydomonas reinhardtii was exposed to two levels of arsenate (As (V), 50, 500 µg/L), Pb (II) (500, 5000 µg/L) and their mixture (50 µg/L As (V) + 500 µg/L Pb (II); 500 µg/L As (V) + 5000 µg/L Pb (II)). The growth of C. reinhardtii was inhibited more remarkably by As (V) than by Pb (II). The As stress was alleviated by Pb in the 50 µg/L As (V) + 500 µg/L Pb (II) treatment, but was enhanced upon the 500 µg/L As (V) + 5000 µg/L Pb (II) exposure, with more pronounced changes in a number of physiological parameters of the algal cells. Proteomic results showed that 71 differently expressed proteins (DEPs) in the treatment of 50 µg/L As (V) + 500 µg/L Pb (II), and 167 DEPs were identified in that of 500 µg/L As (V) + 5000 µg/L Pb (II). These proteins were involved in energy metabolism, photosynthetic carbon fixation, reactive oxygen scavenging and defense, and amino acid synthesis. Taken together, these physiological and proteomic data demonstrated that C. reinhardtii could resist the As (V) and Pb (II) combined treatments through extracellular complexation and intracellular pathways.

Monoubiquitination is a post-translational modification (PTM), through which a single ubiquitin molecule is covalently conjugated to a lysine residue of the target protein. Monoubiquitination regulates the activity, subcellular localization, protein-protein interactions, or endocytosis of the substrate. In doing so, monoubiquitination is implicated in diverse cellular processes, including gene transcription, endocytosis, signal transduction, cell death, and DNA damage repair, which in turn regulate cell-cycle progression, survival, proliferation, and stress response. In this review, we summarize the functions of monoubiquitination and discuss how this PTM modulates homeostasis and cancer.

Global dimming, a decadal decrease in incident global radiation, is often accompanied with an increase in the diffuse radiation fraction, and, therefore, the impact of global dimming on crop production is hard to predict. A popular approach to quantify this impact is the statistical analysis of historical climate and crop data, or use of dynamic crop simulation modelling approach. Here, we show that statistical analysis of historical data did not provide plausible values for the effect of diffuse radiation versus direct radiation on rice or wheat yield. In contrast, our field experimental study of 3 years demonstrated a fertilization effect of increased diffuse radiation fraction, which partly offset yield losses caused by decreased global radiation, in both crops. The fertilization effect was not attributed to any improved canopy light interception but mainly to the increased radiation use efficiency (RUE). The increased RUE was explained not only by the saturating shape of photosynthetic light response curves but also by plant acclimation to dimming that gradually increased leaf nitrogen concentration. Crop harvest index slightly decreased under dimming, thereby discounting the fertilization effect on crop yields. These results challenge existing modelling paradigms, which assume that the fertilization effect on crop yields is mainly attributed to an improved light interception. Further studies on the physiological mechanism of plant acclimation are required to better quantify the global dimming impact on agroecosystem productivity under future climate change.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small non-coding RNAs regulating post-transcriptional gene expression. They play important roles in many biological processes under physiological or pathological conditions, including development, metabolism, tumorigenesis, metastasis, and immune response. Over the past 15 years, significant insights have been gained into the roles of miRNAs in cancer. Depending on the cancer type, miRNAs can act as oncogenes, tumor suppressors, or metastasis regulators. In this review, we focus on the role of miRNAs as components of molecular networks regulating metastasis. These miRNAs, termed metastamiRs, promote or inhibit metastasis through various mechanisms, including regulation of migration, invasion, colonization, cancer stem cell properties, epithelial-mesenchymal transition, and microenvironment. Some of these metastamiRs represent attractive therapeutic targets for cancer treatment.

A polyphasic taxonomic approach was applied to characterize an anaerobic bacterial strain, 426-9T, that was isolated from human faeces. The strain was Gram-stain-negative, non-motile, non-spore-forming, non-pigmented and rod-shaped. Strain 426-9T grew anaerobically at 20-45 °C (optimally at 37-40 °C) and at pH 6.0-10.0 (optimally at pH 6.0-8.0). The major polar lipids were phosphatidylethanolamine, seven amino phospholipids and three phospholipids. The major fatty acids of strain 426-9T were anteiso-C15â:â0 and iso-C17â:â0 3-OH, and the predominant respiratory quinones were menaquinones MK-9 and MK-10. End-products of glucose fermentation were acetate, propionate, iso-butyrate and iso-pentanoate. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis showed that strain 426-9T was a member of the genus Parabacteroides. The level of 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity of strain 426-9T to the type species of the genus, Parabacteroides distasonis ATCC 8503T, was 91.0â%. Within the genus Parabacteroides, strain 426-9T was phylogenetically closely related to Parabacteroides johnsonii M-165T (96.0â% 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity). The draft genome of strain 426-9T comprised 5.15 Mb with a DNA G+C content of 45.9 mol%. A total of 4088 genes were predicted and, of those, 3744 were annotated. On the basis of phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic characterization, strain 426-9T represents a novel species within the genus Parabacteroides, for which the name Parabacteroides acidifaciens sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is 426-9T (=CGMCC 1.13558T=NBRC 113433T).
