RESUMEN

Alveolar macrophages (AMs) are resident macrophages in the lungs; however, whether the number of AMs plays a role in the lung neuroendocrine tumor (NET) prognosis remains unclear. We counted the number of AMs located around the tumor (peritumoral alveolar macrophages [pAMs]) and the number of AMs located apart from the tumor (distant macrophages; dAMs). In 73 cases of neuroendocrine carcinoma (NEC: small cell lung carcinoma and large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma), the group that contained higher pAMs (≥86/µm2 ) revealed shorter recurrent-free survival (RFS) than those with lower pAMs (<86/µm2 ) (p = 0.005). Bivariate analysis showed that the number of pAMs was an independent predictor of a poor RFS. In contrast, in the carcinoid tumor cohort (n = 29), there was no statistically significant correlation between the two groups with high and low numbers of pAMs in RFS (p = 0.113). Furthermore, we examined the correlation between genomic alterations and the number of pAMs in NEC, but no significant correlation was observed. In conclusion, the number of pAMs is a prognostic factor for NEC in the lung and pAMs may contribute to tumor progression within the peritumoral microenvironment.

High resolution Fourier transform emission spectroscopy of the A∼2Πi-X∼2Πi band of the OCS+ ion was performed in the UV region to observe the ν1 (CO stretch) progression bands (υ1 = 0 → 2-5) for both the Ω=3/2 and 1/2 spin components. Accurate molecular constants including the rotational constants, B0 = 0.194 765(13) and 0.187 106(13) cm-1, and the spin-orbit interaction constants, A0 = -381.0(56) and -126.5(56) cm-1, were determined for the X∼2Π and A∼2Π states, respectively, by the simultaneous analysis of the observed progression bands. The CO bond length (rCO = 1.2810 Å) for the A∼2Π state, derived from the rotational constant B0 and Franck-Condon factors, is longer by 0.1756 Å than that (1.1054 Å) for the X∼2Π state, while the CS bond length for the A∼2Π state is shorter by 0.0905 Å than that for the X∼2Π state. Pure rotational transition frequencies in the ground X∼2Π state are predicted, as well as transition frequencies of the ν1 fundamental band, with the present molecular constants.

The pure rotational spectra of the FeCO radical in the ν2 (bending) and ν3 (Fe-C stretching) vibrational states of the ground X̃(3)Σ(-) electronic state were observed in the millimeter-wave region. The equilibrium rotational and centrifugal distortion constants were determined to be Be = 4374.631 (58) MHz and De = 1.1666 (20) kHz together with the spin-spin coupling constant λe = 691.89 (37) GHz and spin-rotation coupling constant γe = - 1079.4 (55) MHz with use of the millimeter-wave results and the ν1 IR data. The equilibrium bond length for Fe-C was derived to be 1.725 Å assuming that for C-O to be 1.159 Å. Since the vibronic symmetry of the excited state of bending vibration is (3)Π, the analysis of spectrum in the ν2 state required an effective spin-orbit interaction constant of A2 = 6.0219 (61) GHz together with three parity doubling constants of o2 = 36.168 (10) GHz, p2 = 85.18 (34) MHz, and q2 = 4.7024 (17) MHz. The effective spin-orbit interaction constant A2 is attributed to the vibronic mixing of the (3)Π excited electronic states. The vibronic mixing also cause the parity doubling constants o2 and p2, but the main contribution to q2 is given by the vibrational l-type doubling.

Low-temperature and high-pressure experiments were performed with filled ice Ih structure of methane hydrate under 2.0-77.0 GPa and 30-300 K using diamond anvil cells and a helium-refrigeration cryostat. In situ X-ray diffractometry revealed distinct changes in the compressibility of the axial ratios of the host framework with pressure. Raman spectroscopy showed a split in the C-H vibration modes of the guest methane molecules, which was previously explained by the orientational ordering of the guest molecules. The pressure and temperature conditions at the split of the vibration modes agreed well with those of the compressibility change. The results indicate the following: (i) the orientational ordering of the guest methane molecules from an orientationally disordered state occurred at high pressures and low temperatures; and (ii) this guest ordering led to anisotropic contraction in the host framework. Such guest orientational ordering and subsequent anisotropic contraction of the host framework were similar to that reported previously for filled ice Ic hydrogen hydrate. Since phases with different guest-ordering manners were regarded as different phases, existing regions of the guest disordered-phase and the guest ordered-phase were roughly estimated by the X-ray study. In addition, above the pressure of the guest-ordered phase, another high-pressure phase developed in the low-temperature region. The deuterated-water host samples were also examined, and the influence of isotopic effects on guest ordering and phase transformation was observed.

Low-temperature and high-pressure experiments were performed on the filled ice Ic structure of hydrogen hydrate at previously unexplored conditions of 5-50 GPa and 30-300 K using diamond anvil cells and a helium-refrigeration cryostat. In situ x-ray diffractometry revealed that the cubic filled ice Ic structure transformed to tetragonal at low temperatures and high pressures; the axis ratio of the tetragonal phase changed depending on the pressure and temperature. These results were consistent with theoretical predictions performed via first principle calculations. The tetragonal phase was determined to be stable above 20 GPa at 300 K, above 15 GPa at 200 K, and above 10 GPa at 100 K. Further changes in the lattice parameters were observed from about 45-50 GPa throughout the temperature region examined, which suggests the transformation to another high-pressure phase above 50 GPa. In our previous x-ray study that was performed up to 80 GPa at room temperature, a similar transformation was observed above 50 GPa. In this study, the observed change in the lattice parameters corresponds to the beginning of that transformation. The reasons for the transformation to the tetragonal structure are briefly discussed: the tetragonal structure might be induced due to changes in the vibrational or rotational modes of the hydrogen molecules under low temperature and high pressure.

The H(2)C=CD isotopic species of vinyl radical produced in a supersonic jet expansion by ultraviolet laser photolysis was studied by millimeter-wave spectroscopy. Due to the tunneling motion of the α deuteron, the ground state is split into two components, 0(+) and 0(-). Tunneling-rotation transitions connecting the lower (0(+)) and upper (0(-)) components of the tunneling doublet were observed in the frequency region of 184-334 GHz, including three R- and two Q-branch transitions. Three and two pure rotational transitions in the K(a)=0 and 1 stacks, respectively, were also observed for each of the 0(+) and 0(-) states in the frequency region of 52-159 GHz. Least-squares analysis of the observed frequencies for the tunneling-rotation and pure rotational transitions with well resolved hyperfine structures yielded a set of precise molecular constants, among which the tunneling splitting in the ground state was determined to be ΔE(0)=1187.234(17) MHz, which is 1/14 that for H(2)C=CH. The potential barrier height derived from the observed tunneling splitting by an analysis of the tunneling dynamics using a one-dimensional model is 1545 cm(-1), consistent with the value 1568 cm(-1) obtained for the normal vinyl. The observed spectrum was found to be perturbed by a hyperfine interaction connecting ortho and para levels. The constant for the interaction, which we call the ortho-para mixing Fermi contact interaction, has been determined to be δa(F) ((ß))=68.06(53) MHz. This is believed to be the first definite detection of such an interaction. By this interaction the ortho and para states of H(2)C=CD are mixed up to about 0.1%. The constant is more than 1000 times larger than spin-rotation interaction constants that cause ortho-para mixing in closed shell molecules and suggests extremely rapid conversion between the ortho and para nuclear spin isomers of H(2)C=CD.

OBJECTIVE: In this study, we aimed to identify prognostic determinants and to comparably analyze clinical features of patients with both resected and unresected superior sulcus tumors (SSTs). METHODS: The data of 56 patients who underwent any treatment for an SST from 2004 through 2016 in our hospital were reviewed. Overall survival (OS) rates were estimated using the Kaplan-Meier method. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed to determine independent prognostic factors for patients with resected and unresected SST separately. RESULTS: The number of patients with resected and unresected SSTs was 24 (43%) and 32 (57%), respectively. Of the 24 patients who underwent surgery, 20 received induction therapy, with 32% achieving pathological complete response. Complete resection (R0) was performed in 22 patients (92%). On multivariate survival analysis, preoperative serum carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) level (median 8.3 ng/ml, p = 0.021) was identified as the independent determinant of OS in surgical patients; whereas, initial treatment response (complete response or partial response, p = 0.032) was the independent OS indicator in non-surgical patients. The 5-year OS of the patient with resected and unresected SST was 68.8% and 29.1% (p = 0.008), respectively. CONCLUSION: Significant prognostic factors differ among patients stratified by the presence of surgical resection for SSTs. Preoperative CEA level in surgical candidates and initial treatment response in non-surgical patients were the independent factors associated with OS. Surgical candidates are expected to have more favorable survival than patients with unresectable SSTs.

OBJECTIVES: The measurement of part-solid and whole tumour sizes in patients with non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) using computed tomography (CT) has been widely accepted for assessing clinical outcomes. Although the volume doubling time (VDT) of a tumour is useful for distinguishing high-risk nodules from low-risk ones, it remains to be clarified whether separate calculation of whole-tumour VDT and solid-part tumour VDT (SVDT) greatly affects the survival rate of patients with radiologically node-negative part-solid or solid NSCLC. METHODS: The study included 258 patients with NSCLC who had radiologically node-negative, part-solid or solid tumours and who had at least 2 preoperative CT scans taken more than 30 days apart followed by radical lobectomy and systemic lymph node dissection between January 2012 and December 2015. Univariable and multivariable analyses of recurrence-free survival were performed using the Cox proportional hazards regression model. RESULTS: The mean whole-tumour VDT and SVDT were 375 and 458 days, respectively. Multivariable analyses demonstrated that whole-tumour VDT (P = 0.003), SVDT (P < 0.001), solid-part tumour size, whole-tumour size and comorbidities significantly affected the recurrence-free survival. Using the receiver operating characteristic curve, the cut-off value of the SVDT for recurrence was 215 days, and the 5-year recurrence-free survival rates for patients with SVDT >215 days and those with SVDT <215 days were 85.7% and 43.0%, respectively (P < 0.001). CONCLUSION: The calculation of SVDT in patients with node-negative, part-solid or solid NSCLC is highly useful for predicting postoperative survival outcomes.

Ortho-para mixing interaction due to the coupling of nuclear and electron spins was detected for the first time by millimeter-wave spectroscopy of the deuterated vinyl radical H(2)CCD. The ground state of H(2)CCD is split by the deuteron tunneling into two components 0(+) and 0(-) separated by DeltaE(0)=1186.794(16) MHz. Rotational levels in the 0(+) and 0(-) states, one being an ortho level and the other a para level, are coupled by the interaction expressed by 0(+/-)mid R:H(')mid R:0(-/+)=(deltaa(F)/2)S(I(1)-I(2)), where I(1) and I(2) are spins of the two protons and S is the electron spin. The deltaa(F) constant has been determined to be 68.06(52) MHz. The para to ortho conversion rate constant is predicted to be 1.2x10(5) s(-1) torr(-1).

BACKGROUND: Quantitative computed tomography (CT) histogram analysis of tumors is reported to help distinguish between invasive and less invasive lung cancers. This study aimed to clarify whether CT histogram analysis of tumors can be used to classify patients with clinical stage 0 to IA non-small cell lung cancer according to pathologic lymph node (pN) status. METHODS: Predictive factors associated with pN metastasis were identified from the derivation dataset including 629 patients with clinical stage 0 to IA non-small cell lung cancer who underwent complete resection with lymph node dissection (surgeries between 2008 and 2013). The validation dataset including 238 patients (surgeries between 2014 and 2015) were subsequently reevaluated. Clinicosurgical factors, including CT histogram analysis of tumors (CT value percentiles 2.5, 25, 50, 75, and 97.5, skewness, and kurtosis) were assessed. RESULTS: Seventy-three patients (12%) in the derivation cohort and 35 patients (15%) in the validation cohort had positive nodes. The pN status significantly affected survival in the entire population: 5-year overall survival of 93.1% vs 71.1% and 5-year disease-free survival of 85.9% vs 43.1% for negative vs positive (both P < .001). On multivariate analysis in the derivation cohort, the 75th percentile CT value (P < .001), age (P = .003), and comorbidities (P = .006) were significantly associated with pN metastasis. The area under the curve and the cutoff level of the 75th percentile CT value relevant to pN metastasis were 0.729 and 1.5 HU, respectively, and the threshold value provided accuracy of 71% for the validation cohort. CONCLUSIONS: Histogram analysis of CT imaging metrics of tumors contributes to noninvasive prediction of pN metastasis in patients with clinical stage 0 to IA non-small cell lung cancer.

The rotational spectrum of cobalt mononitrosyl (CoNO) produced by ultraviolet photolysis of Co(CO)(3)NO was observed in the millimeter-wave region. Seven rotational transitions in the ground state ranging from J = 6-5 to 12-11, with hyperfine splittings due to the Co nucleus (I = 7/2), were detected in a supersonic jet environment, while higher-frequency transitions in the range from J = 29-28 to 35-34 were measured in the ground, nu(1), nu(2), nu(3), and 2nu(2) vibrational states using a free-space absorption cell. It was confirmed from the observed spectral pattern that the CoNO molecule has a linear structure with the electronic ground state of (1)Sigma(+) symmetry. The rotational lines in the 2nu(2)(Sigma) and nu(3) states were observed to be perturbed by Fermi resonance. The equilibrium rotational constant B(e) is determined to be 4682.207(15) MHz. The CoN bond length is derived to be 1.5842 A assuming the NO bond length of 1.1823 A. A large nuclear spin-rotation interaction constant, C(I) = 123.8(11) kHz, was determined, suggesting a (1)Pi electronic excited state lying close to the ground state.

Age-related inhibition of salivary secretion has been demonstrated in rats, and the nitric oxide (NO) present in the supraoptic nucleus (SON) and the medial septal area has been reported to play an inhibitory role in the regulation of salivary secretion. In the present study, we investigated the age-related changes occurring in the NO synthase (NOS)-expressing neurons in the SON, which is related to the production of NO, and discussed the interrelation between the age-related changes in the NOS-expressing neurons and the age-related inhibition of salivary secretion. Nissl staining and reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate diaphorase (NADPH-d) histochemistry were performed for young adult and aged rats. Quantitative analysis was also performed using the Nissl-stained and NADPH-d-positive neurons. Although the numbers of the Nissl-stained neurons did not change, significant age-related increases were detected in cell number, cell size and reactive density of the NADPH-d-positive neurons. Therefore, the production of NO in the SON neurons increased with age. We concluded that the age-related increase in the NO in the SON might be a factor that contributes to the age-related inhibition of salivary secretion.

A 49-year-old woman was admitted with cough, general fatigue, and dyspnea on effort. Her hobby was the Japanese traditional handicraft of lacquer-carving. She sometimes used smut spores of Ustilago esculenta, pronounced as "Makomozumi"on lacquer ware. The chest radiographs showed diffuse ground-glass opacities and small centrilobular nodules. Bronchoalveolar lavage yielded a marked number of lymphocytes as well as total cell counts and a low CD4 +/CD8 + ratio. The transbronchial lung biopsy specimen revealed lymphocytic alveolitis and non-necrotizing epithelioid cell granulomas. The results of provocation test by Makomozumi were positive. Serum tests of the specific antibody against extracted soluble antigens of smut spores were positive. The peripheral lymphocyte proliferation test, performed with Mokomozumi antigens was also positive. The final diagnosis was hypersensitivity pneumonitis induced by smut spores of fungus Ustilago esculenta.

Cellular polyamines of newly isolated acidophilic, thermophilic and thermoacidophilic archaebacteria were investigated for the chemotaxonomic significance of polyamine distribution profiles. In addition to spermidine, spermine and agmatine, a quaternary branched penta-amine, N(4)-bis(aminopropyl)spermidine, was found in thermophilic Thermococcus waiotapuensis, Thermococcus aegaeus and Pyrococcus glycovorans belonging to the order Thermococcales. An acidophilic euryarchaeon, Ferroplasma acidiphilum located in the order Thermoplasmatales, contained spermidine and agmatine. Norspermidine, spermidine, norspermine and spermine were found in thermoacidophilic Acidilobus aceticus and thermophilic Thermodiscus maritimus located in the order Desulfurococcales, and in thermophilic Pyrobaculum arsenaticum, Pyrobaculum oguniense, Vulcanisaeta distributa and Vulcanisaeta souniana belonging to the order Thermoproteales; however, the four genera differ on their tetra- and penta-amine levels. Thermophilic Staphylothermus hellenicus belonging to Desulfurococcales contained caldopentamine, caldohexamine and N1-acetylcaldopentamine in addition to norspermidine, spermidine and norspermine. This is the first report on the occurrence of acetylated penta-amine in nature.

The vinyl radical in the ground vibronic state produced in a supersonic jet expansion by 193 nm excimer laser photolysis of vinyl bromide was investigated by millimeter-wave spectroscopy. Due to the proton tunneling, the ground state is split into two components, of which the lower and higher ones are denoted as 0+ and 0-, respectively. Eight pure rotational transitions with Ka = 0 and 1 obeying a-type selection rules were observed for each of the 0+ and 0- states in the frequency region of 60-250 GHz. Tunneling-rotation transitions connecting the lower (0+) and upper (0-) components of the tunneling doublet, obeying b-type selection rules, were also observed in the frequency region of 190-310 GHz, including three R- and six Q-branch transitions. The observed frequencies of the pure rotational and tunneling-rotation transitions were analyzed by using an effective Hamiltonian in which the coupling between the 0+ and 0- states was taken into account. A set of precise molecular constants was obtained. Among others, the proton tunneling splitting in the ground state was determined to be DeltaE0 = 16,272(2) MHz. The potential barrier height was estimated to be 1580 cm(-1) from the proton tunneling splitting, by an analysis using a detailed one-dimensional model. The spin-rotation and hyperfine interaction constants were also determined for the 0+ and 0- states together with the off-diagonal interaction constants connecting the 0+ and 0- states, epsilonab + epsilonba for the spin-rotation interaction and Tab for the hyperfine interaction of the alpha (CH) proton. The hyperfine interaction constants, due to the alpha proton and the beta (CH2) protons, are consistent with those derived from electron spin resonance studies.

High-resolution infrared spectra of the nu(1) and nu(2) bands of DCCCl were observed using Bruker IFS 120HR Fourier transform spectrometers at resolutions of 0.0044 and 0.0035 cm(-1), respectively. For the DCC(35)Cl isotopomer, the nu(1) as well as the nu(2) band was found to be heavily perturbed. Detailed analyses revealed that the nu(1) state is in resonance with the l=0 substate of the nu(3)+4nu(4) state and that the nu(2) state is in resonance with the l=0 substate of the nu(3)+4nu(5) state. The rotational constants played a key role in identifying the perturbing states. In contrast, for the DCC(37)Cl isotopomer, the rotational structures of the nu(1) and nu(2) states are almost regular but slightly perturbed by interactions with the nu(3)+4nu(4) and nu(3)+4nu(5) states, respectively. The constants of resonances as well as the molecular constants for the nu(1), nu(2), nu(3)+4nu(4) and nu(3)+4nu(5) states were determined. Copyright 2001 Academic Press.
