RESUMEN

Research to assess and inform health policy is an essential component of the policymaking process to advance equity in public health practice. This study investigated health disparities during the COVID-19 pandemic (2020-2022) in older adult institutional settings in Philadelphia, PA, to inform policy initiatives, interventions, and infrastructure development. We first explored the changing patterns of nursing staffing levels (total direct care staff and registered nurses [RNs]) measured by hours per resident per day (HPRD) before and after COVID-19. Our findings revealed that HPRD levels consistently fell below the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services recommended standards from 2018 to 2022, with notable declines observed starting from 2021. Results from multilevel modeling showed significant declines in HPRD for total direct care nursing staff in nursing homes located in zip codes with a high proportion of Black residents (≥40%). In contrast, HPRD for RNs significantly declined in nursing homes located in zip codes with a lower proportion of Black residents (<40%). Moreover, higher reported direct care HPRD and RN HPRD were associated with any reported COVID-19 cases only within zip codes with a low proportion of Black residents. These findings indicate the need for additional policies to address these observed patterns in staffing levels. Our study provides a foundation for future policy reviews utilizing a conceptual framework that is health equity-centric for local and state health departments program and units intended for institutional care settings for older adults.

Imaging wide-field surface plasmon resonance (SPR) microscopy sensors based on polyacrylic acid polyelectrolyte brushes (PAA PEBs) were designed to enhance the sensitivity of nano-object detection. The switching behavior of the PAA PEBs against changes in the pH values was investigated by analyzing the chemical, morphological, optical, and electrical properties. At pH ~1, the brushes collapse on the surface with the dominance of carboxylic groups (COOH). Upon the increase in the pH to nine, the switching process completes, and the brushes swell from dissociating most of the COOH groups and converting them into COO- groups. The domination of the negatively charged COO- groups increases the electrostatic repulsion in the polymer chains and stretches the brushes. The sensitivity of the SPR sensing device was investigated using a theoretical approach, as well as experimental measurements. The signal-to-noise ratio for a Au layer increases from six to eighteen after coating with PAA PEBs. In addition, the linewidth of the recorded image decreases from six pixels to five pixels by using the Au-PAA layers, which results from the enhanced spatial resolution of the recorded images. Coating a Au-layer with PAA PEBs enhances the sensitivity of the SPR sensing device, and improves the spatial resolution of the recorded image.

TiO2:Au-based photocatalysis represents a promising alternative to remove contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) from wastewater under sunlight irradiation. However, spherical Au nanoparticles, generally used to sensitize TiO2, still limit the photocatalytic spectral band to the 520 nm region, neglecting a high part of sun radiation. Here, a ligand-free synthesis of TiO2:Au nanostars is reported, substantially expanding the light absorption spectral region. TiO2:Au nanostars with different Au component sizes and branching were generated and tested in the degradation of the antibiotic ciprofloxacin. Interestingly, nanoparticles with the smallest branching showed the highest photocatalytic degradation, 83% and 89% under UV and visible radiation, together with a threshold in photocatalytic activity in the red region. The applicability of these multicomponent nanoparticles was further explored with their incorporation into a porous matrix based on PVDF-HFP to open the way for a reusable energy cost-effective system in the photodegradation of polluted waters containing CECs.

The aim of this study is to evaluate the potential use of titanium foil coated with sputtered silver and copper films as a novel brazing filler for joining TiAl alloys. For this purpose, a detailed microstructural characterization of the resulting brazing interfaces was carried out. The development of brazing fillers that allow the joining of TiAl alloys without compromising the service temperature is a fruitful prospect. Brazing experiments were performed in a vacuum at 900, 950, and 980°C, with a dwell time of 30 min. Microstructural characterization reveals that brazing joints can be obtained successfully at 950 and 980°C. The interface consists of a large central region of α-Ti with an amount of Al and Ti-Ag compound and thin layers, mainly composed of intermetallic compounds, formed close to the base material. A novel brazing filler consisting of Ti foil coated with sputtered Ag and Cu films inhibits the extensive formation of soft (Ag) zones or coarse brittle Ti-Al-(Cu,Ni) particles. Hence, the need for post-brazing heat treatments for the joining of TiAl alloys was avoided.

Leishmania proteins have been evaluated as vaccine candidates against leishmaniasis; however, most antigens present low immunogenicity and need to be added with immune adjuvants. A low number of licensed adjuvants exist on the market today; therefore, research conducted to produce new products is desirable. The present study sought to evaluate the immunogenicity and protective efficacy of a recombinant Leishmania hypothetical protein, namely LiHyR, administered with saponin or liposomes in BALB/c mice. Immunological and parasitological parameters were evaluated, and results showed significant protection against Leishmania infantum infection produced by both compositions in the immunized animals; however, this was not identified when the antigen was used alone. In addition, the liposomal formulation was more effective in inducing a polarized Th1 response in the vaccinated animals, which was maintained after challenge and reflected by lower parasitism found in all evaluated organs when the limiting dilution technique and RT-PCR assay were employed. The protected animals showed higher levels of protein and parasite-specific IFN-γ IL-2, IL-12, GM-CSF, and TNF-α, which were evaluated by capture ELISA and flow cytometry, in addition to a higher production of anti-protein and anti-parasite IgG2a antibodies, both before and after challenge. The Lip/rLiHyR combination induced higher IFN-γ production through both CD4+ and CD8+ T cell subtypes. Results indicate the possibility of using the LiHyR, containing a liposomal formulation, as a vaccine candidate against visceral leishmaniasis.

Amphotericin B (Amp) has been well-successfully used to treat against Leishmania infection, although high toxicity has been found in patients. In the present study, Amp was administered in Leishmania infantum-infected BALB/c mice by three distinct delivery systems aiming to compare their efficacy against challenge infection, as well as their side effects in a murine visceral leishmaniasis (VL) model. This product was administered in a Poloxamer P407 (Pluronic® F127)-based polymeric micelle system (Amp/M), in the Ambisome® formulation (Lip-Amp) or in a free format (free Amp). Glucantime® (Gluc) was used as a comparative drug. Aiming to evaluate different endpoints of the treatments, the efficacy of the compounds was investigated one and 15-days after the therapeutic regimens, determining the parasite load by a limiting dilution assay and a quantitative PCR (qPCR) technique, as well as evaluating the immune response generated in the infected and treated animals. In the results, Amp/M or Lip-Amp-treated mice presented the best outcomes, since significant parasite load reductions were found in the evaluated organs, as well as a parasite-specific Th1 immune response was observed in the animals. In addition, no hepatic or renal damage was found in these mice. On the other hand, free Amp or Gluc induced toxicity in the animals, which was associated with a low Th1 immune response. Comparatively, Amp/M was the most effective drug in our experimental model, and results showed that the Amp-carrying system could be considered as a future alternative in studies against VL.

Leishmaniasis has become a significant public health issue in several countries in the world. New products have been identified to treat against the disease; however, toxicity and/or high cost is a limitation. The present work evaluated the antileishmanial activity of a new naphthoquinone derivate, Flau-A [2-(2,3,4-tri-O-acetyl-6-deoxy-ß-L-galactopyranosyloxy)-1,4-naphthoquinone], against promastigote and amastigote-like stages of Leishmania amazonensis and L. infantum. In addition, the cytotoxicity in murine macrophages and human red cells was also investigated. The mechanism of action of Flau-A was assessed in L. amazonensis as well as its efficacy in treating infected macrophages and inhibiting infection of pretreated parasites. Results showed that Flau-A was effective against promastigotes and amastigote-like forms of both parasite species, as well as showed low toxicity in mammalian cells. Results also highlighted the morphological and biochemical alterations induced by Flau-A in L. amazonensis, including loss of mitochondrial membrane potential, as well as increased reactive oxygen species production, cell shrinkage, and alteration of the plasma membrane integrity. The present study demonstrates for the first time the antileishmanial activity of Flau-A against two Leishmania species and suggests that the mitochondria of the parasites may be the main target organelle. Data shown here encourages the use of this molecule in new studies concerning treatment against Leishmania infection in mammalian hosts.

The aim of this work is to prepare ultraviolet (UV) triggered controlled release of compounds from microcapsule systems (MCs). Polyurethane (PU) and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) microcapsules were studied with/without chemical functionalization using photocatalytic TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) on their surface. Once TiO2 nanoparticles are illuminated with UV light (λ = 370 nm), they initiate the rupture of the polymeric bonds of the microcapsule and subsequently initiate the encapsulated compound release, methotrexate (MTX) or rhodamine (Rh), in the present work. The size, polydispersity, charge, and yield of all MCs were measured, being the methotrexate drug release for all systems determined and compared with and without functionalization with TiO2 NPs, under dark, visible light and UV illumination in vitro. Finally, the Rh release was characterized using fluorescence microscopy. The TiO2 NPs size is around 10 nm, as determined by X-ray diffraction experiments. The PU MCs average size is around 60 µm, its electric charge +3.11 mV and yield around 85%. As for the PMMA MCs, the average size is around 280 µm, its electric charge -7.2 mV and yield around 25% and 30% for both MTX and Rh, respectively. In general, adding TiO2 NPs or the encapsulated products to the MCs does not affect the size but functionalization with TiO2 NPs lowers the electric charge. Microcapsules functionalized with TiO2 nanoparticles and irradiated with UV light presented the highest release of MTX and Rh. All other samples showed lower drug release levels when studied under the same conditions.

RESUMEN

This case report describes the orthodontic retreatment a patient with a skeletal Class III malocclusion. The clinical examination showed a concave profile caused by a retruded maxilla and a prognathic mandible, an occlusal cant, and absence of all first premolars. A surgery-first approach was combined with skeletal anchorage implants in the maxillary arch and tandem mechanics. The esthetic facial profile, pleasant smile, appropriate occlusion, and overall good treatment outcomes remained stable 5 years after active orthodontic treatment.

Tegumentary leishmaniasis (TL) constitutes a major public health problem with significant morbidity worldwide. Synthetic peptide-based vaccines are attractive candidates to protect against leishmaniasis, since T cell-specific epitopes can be delivery to antigen-presenting cells, leading to the generation of a Th1 cell-mediated immunity. In this context, the present study aims to evaluate the immunogenicity and protective efficacy of a vaccine composed of major histocompatibility complex class I and II-restricted epitopes derived from four Leishmania infantum proteins to protect mice against Leishmania amazonensis infection. This recombinant fusion protein was administered in BALB/c mice alone or with saponin. As controls, animals received saline or saponin. In the results, the administration of the recombinant protein plus saponin induced a specific IFN-γ, IL-12 and GM-CSF production, as well as high IgG2a isotype antibody levels, which protected mice against a challenge using L. amazonensis promastigotes. Lower parasite burden was found in the infected footpads, liver, spleen and draining lymph node of vaccinated mice, when compared to those from the control groups. In addition, protection was associated with a lower IL-4 and IL-10 response, which was accompanied by the antileishmanial nitrite production by spleen cells of the animals. Interestingly, the recombinant protein administered alone induced a partial protection against challenge. In conclusion, this study shows a new vaccine candidate based on T cell-specific epitopes that was able to induce protection against L. amazonensis infection.

BACKGROUND: There is increasing evidence to suggest that not all individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) have equal risk for developing cardiovascular disease. We sought to compare the yield of testing for pre-clinical atherosclerosis with various approaches. METHODS: 98 asymptomatic individuals with T2DM without known coronary artery disease (CAD) were enrolled in a prospective study and underwent carotid ultrasound, exercise treadmill testing (ETT), coronary artery calcium (CAC) scoring, and coronary computed tomography angiography (CTA). RESULTS: Of 98 subjects (average age 55 ± 6, 64 % female), 43 (44 %) had coronary plaque detectable on CTA, and 38 (39 %) had CAC score >0. By CTA, 16 (16 %) had coronary stenosis ≥50 %, including three subjects with CAC = 0. Subjects with coronary plaque had greater prevalence of carotid plaque (58 % vs. 38 %, p = 0.01) and greater carotid intima media thickness (0.80 ± 0.20 mm vs. 0.70 ± 0.11 mm, p = 0.02). Notably, 18 of 55 subjects (33 %) with normal CTA had carotid plaque. Eight subjects had a positive ETT, of whom five had ≥ 50 % coronary stenosis, two had <50 % stenosis, and one had no CAD. Among these tests, CAC scoring had the highest sensitivity and specificity for prediction of CAD. CONCLUSION: Among asymptomatic subjects with T2DM, a majority (56 %) had no CAD by CTA. When compared to CTA, CAC was the most accurate screening modality for detection of CAD, while ETT and carotid ultrasound were less sensitive and specific. However, 33 % of subjects with normal coronary CTA had carotid plaque, suggesting that screening for carotid plaque might better characterize stroke risk in such patients.

In the present study, a Poloxamer 407-based amphotericin B (AmpB)-containing polymeric micelles system (AmpB/M) was employed in the treatment of Leishmania amazonensis-infected BALB/c mice. Initially, the in vitro antileishmanial activity (IC50 value) of AmpB/M and B-AmpB/M (empty micelles) against stationary promastigotes and amastigotes-like forms of the parasites was determined, and results were of 1.83 ± 0.4 and 22.1 ± 0.7 µM, respectively, for the promastigotes, and of 2.27 ± 0.5 and 33.98 ± 2.6 µM, respectively, for the amastigotes-like. The cytotoxic concentration (CC50) values of these products were also evaluated, and we found the results of 119.5 ± 9.6 and 134.7 ± 10.3 µM, respectively. With these values, the selectivity index (SI) was calculated and results were of 65.3 and 5.4, respectively, for the promastigotes, and of 59.3 and 3.96, respectively, for the amastigotes-like of the parasites. Free AmpB showed IC50 values of 1.2 ± 0.3 and 2.5 ± 0.5 µM for the promastigotes and amastigotes-like, respectively, whereas the CC50 value was of 9.5 ± 0.4 µM. The SI values of this drug were of 7.9 and 3.8, respectively, for the promastigote and amastigote-like stages of the parasites. After, animals were infected and received saline or were treated subcutaneously with free AmpB, AmpB/M or B-AmpB/M. In the results, free AmpB-treated and infected mice showed reductions in their body weight, which were associated with hepatic and renal damage; however, no organic alteration was observed in the AmpB/M-treated animals. In addition, these animals showed significant reductions in their lesion average size and in the parasite burden in all evaluated infected tissue and organs, when compared to the other groups; as well as significantly higher levels of antileishmanial IFN-γ, IL-12, GM-CSF and nitrite, which were associated with low production of IL-4, IL-10 and IgG1 isotype antibodies. In conclusion, this AmpB/M system could be considered as an alternative for future studies in the treatment of tegumentary leishmaniasis.

In recent years, considerable attention has been given to identify new antileishmanial products derived from medicinal plants, although, to date, no new effective compound has been recently applied to treat leishmaniasis. In the present study, the antileishmanial activity of a water extract from Zingiber officinalis Roscoe (ginger) was investigated and a purified fraction, named F10, was identified as responsible by this biological activity. The chemical characterization performed for this fraction showed that it is mainly composed by flavonoids and saponins. The water extract and the F10 fraction presented IC50 values of 125.5 and 49.8 µg/mL, respectively. Their selectivity indexes (SI) were calculated and values were seven and 40 times higher, respectively, in relation to the value found for amphotericin B, which was used as a control. Additional studies were performed to evaluate the toxicity of these compounds in human red blood cells, besides of the production of nitrite, as an indicator of nitric oxide (NO), in treated and infected macrophages. The results showed that both F10 fraction and water extract were not toxic to human cells, and they were able to stimulate the nitrite production, with values of 13.6 and 5.4 µM, respectively, suggesting that their biological activity could be due to macrophages activation via NO production. In conclusion, the present study shows that a purified fraction from ginger could be evaluated in future works as a therapeutic alternative, on its own or in association with other drugs, to treat disease caused by L. amazonensis.

The current treatment of leishmaniasis has been hampered due to the high toxicity of the available drugs and long duration protocols, which often lead to its abandonment. In the present study, a poloxamer 407-based delivery system was developed, and a molecule, 8-hydroxyquinoline (8-HQN), was incorporated with it, leading to an 8-HQN/micelle (8-HQN/M) composition. Assays were performed to evaluate the in vitro antileishmanial activity of 8-HQN/M against Leishmania amazonensis stationary promastigotes. The cytotoxicity in murine macrophages and in human red cells, as well as the efficacy of the treatment in macrophages infected by parasites, was also assessed. This product was also evaluated for the treatment of murine tegumentary leishmaniasis, using L. amazonensis-infected BALB/c mice. To evaluate the in vivo efficacy of the treatment, the average lesion diameter (area) in the infected tissue, as well as the parasite load at the site of infection (skin), spleen, liver and draining lymph nodes were examined. Non-incorporated micelle (B-8-HQN/M) and the free molecule (8-HQN) were used as controls, besides animals that received only saline. The parasite burden was evaluated by limiting dilution and quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR) techniques, and immunological parameters associated with the treatments were also investigated. In the results, the 8-HQN/M group, when compared to the others, presented more significant reductions in the average lesion diameter and in the parasite burden in the skin and all evaluated organs. These animals also showed significantly higher levels of parasite-specific IFN-γ, IL-12, and GM-CSF, associated with low levels of IL-4 and IL-10, when compared to the saline, 8-HQN/M, and B-8-HQN groups. A predominant IL-12-driven IFN-γ production, against parasite proteins, mainly produced by CD4+ T cells, was observed in the treated animals, post-infection. In conclusion, 8-HQN/M was highly effective in treating L. amazonensis-infected BALB/c mice and can be considered alone, or combined with other drugs, as an alternative treatment for tegumentary leishmaniasis. The serodiagnosis of canine visceral leishmaniasis (CVL) presents problems related to its sensitivity and/or specificity. In the present study, a new Leishmania-specific hypothetical protein, LiHyD, was produced as a recombinant protein (rLiHyD) and evaluated in ELISA experiments for the CVL serodiagnosis. LiHyD was characterized as antigenic in a recent immunoproteomic search performed with Leishmania infantum proteins and the sera of dogs developing visceral leishmaniasis (VL). Aiming to compare the efficacy between whole proteins and synthetic peptides, two linear and one conformational B cell epitopes of LiHyD were synthesized and also evaluated as diagnostic markers. The four antigens were recognized by the sera of dogs suffering VL. On the contrary, low reactivity was observed when they were assayed with sera from non-infected healthy dogs living in endemic or non-endemic areas of leishmaniasis. In addition, no reactivity was found against them using sera from dogs experimentally infected by Trypanosoma cruzi, Babesia canis, or Ehrlichia canis, or sera from animals vaccinated with the Leish-Tec® vaccine, a prophylactic preparation commercially available for CVL prevention in Brazil. As comparative diagnostic tools, a recombinant version of the amastigote-specific A2 protein and a soluble crude Leishmania extract were studied. Both antigens presented lower sensitivity and/or specificity values than the LiHyD-based products. The rLiHyD presented better results for the CVL serodiagnosis than its linear epitopes, although the peptide recreating the conformational epitope resulted also appropriate as a diagnostic marker of CVL. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study showing the use of a conformational epitope derived from a Leishmania protein for serodiagnosis of CVL.

Two mimotopes of Leishmania infantum identified by phage display were evaluated as vaccine candidates in BALB/c mice against Leishmania amazonensis infection. The epitope-based immunogens, namely B10 and C01, presented as phage-fused peptides; were used without association of a Th1 adjuvant, and they were administered isolated or in combination into animals. Both clones showed a specific production of interferon-gamma (IFN-γ), interleukin-12 (IL-12) and granulocyte/macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) after in vitro spleen cells stimulation, and they were able to induce a partial protection against infection. Significant reductions of parasite load in the infected footpads, liver, spleen, bone marrow and paws' draining lymph nodes were observed in the immunized mice, in comparison with the control groups (saline, saponin, wild-type and non-relevant clones). Protection was associated with an IL-12-dependent production of IFN-γ, mediated mainly by CD8(+) T cells, against parasite proteins. Protected mice also presented low levels of IL-4 and IL-10, as well as increased levels of parasite-specific IgG2a antibodies. The association of both clones resulted in an improved protection in relation to their individual use. More importantly, the absence of adjuvant did not diminish the cross-protective efficacy against Leishmania spp. infection. This study describes for the first time two epitope-based immunogens selected by phage display technology against L. infantum infected dogs sera, which induced a partial protection in BALB/c mice infected with L. amazonensis.

The development of effective prophylactic strategies to prevent leishmaniasis has become a high priority. No less important than the choice of an antigen, the association of an appropriate adjuvant is necessary to achieve a successful vaccination, as the majority of the tested antigens contain limited immunogenic properties, and need to be supplemented with immune response adjuvants in order to boost their immunogenicity. However, few effective adjuvants that can be used against leishmaniasis exist on the market today; therefore, it is possible to speculate that the research aiming to identify new adjuvants could be considered relevant. Recently, Agaricus blazei extracts have proved to be useful in enhancing the immune response to DNA vaccines against some diseases. This was based on the Th1 adjuvant activity of the polysaccharide-rich fractions from this mushroom. In this context, the present study evaluated purified fractions derived from Agaricus blazei as Th1 adjuvants through in vitro assays of their immune stimulation of spleen cells derived from naive BALB/c mice. Two of the tested six fractions (namely F2 and F4) were characterized as polysaccharide-rich fractions, and were able to induce high levels of IFN-γ, and low levels of IL-4 and IL-10 in the spleen cells. The efficacy of adjuvant action against L. infantum was evaluated in BALB/c mice, with these fractions being administered together with a recombinant antigen, LiHyp1, which was previously evaluated as a vaccine candidate, associated with saponin, against visceral leishmaniasis (VL). The associations between LiHyp1/F2 and LiHyp1/F4 were able to induce an in vivo Th1 response, which was primed by high levels of IFN-γ, IL-12, and GM-CSF, by low levels of IL-4 and IL-10; as well as by a predominance of IgG2a antibodies in the vaccinated animals. After infection, the immune profile was maintained, and the vaccines proved to be effective against L. infantum. The immune stimulatory effects in the BALB/c mice proved to be similar when comparing the F2 and F4 fractions with a known Th1 adjuvant (saponin), though animals vaccinated with saponin did present a slight to moderate inflammatory edema on their hind footpads. In conclusion, the F2 and F4 fractions appear to induce a Th1-type immune response and, in this context, they could be evaluated in association with other protective antigens against Leishmania, as well as in other disease models.

The present study aimed to investigate the in vitro antileishmanial activity of strychnobiflavone flavonoid against Leishmania infantum, as well as its mechanism of action, and evaluate the ex vivo biodistribution profile of the flavonoid in naive BALB/c mice. The antileishmanial activity (IC50 value) of strychnobiflavone against stationary promastigote and amastigote-like stages of the parasites was of 5.4 and 18.9 µM, respectively; with a 50% cytotoxic concentration (CC50) value of 125.0 µM on murine macrophages, resulting in selectivity index (SI) of 23.2 and 6.6, respectively. Amphotericin B, used as a positive control, presented SI values of 7.6 and 3.3 for promastigote and amastigote-like stages of L. infantum, respectively. The strychnobiflavone was also effective in reducing in significant levels the percentage of infected macrophages, as well as the number of amastigotes per macrophage, after the treatment of infected macrophages using the flavonoid. By using different fluorescent probes, we investigated the bioenergetics metabolism of L. infantum promastigotes and demonstrated that the flavonoid caused the depolarization of the mitochondrial membrane potential, without affecting the production of reactive oxygen species. In addition, using SYTOX(®) green as a fluorescent probe, the strychnobiflavone demonstrated no interference in plasma membrane permeability. For the ex vivo biodistribution assays, the flavonoid was labeled with technetium-(99m) and studied in a mouse model by intraperitoneal route. After a single dose administration, the scintigraphic images demonstrated a highest uptake by the liver and spleen of the animals within 60 min, resulting in low concentrations after 24 h. The present study therefore demonstrated, for the first time, the antileishmanial activity of the strychnobiflavone against L. infantum, and suggests that the mitochondria of the parasites may be the possible target organelle. The preferential distribution of this compound into the liver and spleen of the animals could warrant its employ in the treatment of visceral leishmaniasis.

Microcapsules produced by interfacial polycondensation of p-phenylenediamine (PPD) and sebacoyl chloride (SC) were studied. The products were characterized in terms of morphology, mean diameter and effectiveness of dodecane encapsulation. The use of Tween 20 as dispersion stabilizer, in comparison with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), reduced considerably the mean diameter of the microcapsules and originated smoother wall surfaces. When compared to ethylenediamine (EDA), microcapsules produced with PPD monomer were more rigid and brittle, prone to fracture during processing and ineffective retention of the core liquid. The use of diethylenetriamine (DETA) cross-linker in combination with PPD did not decrease capsule fragility. On the other hand, addition of a small fraction of oleic acid to the organic phase remarkably improved wall toughness and lead to successful encapsulation of the core-oil. Oleic acid is believed to act as a plasticizer. Its incorporation in the polymeric wall was demonstrated by FTIR and (1)H-NMR.

The number of Americans with multiple jobs is increasing and multiple jobholders work more hours per week. However, the associations between multiple jobholding and hypertension are unknown. The aim of this study was to examine the associations of multiple jobholding with hypertension and determine whether weekly working hours moderated this association. Data from the 2015 National Health Interview Survey on adults (age ≥18 years) were used and included participants who self-identified as non-Hispanic Asian, non-Hispanic Black, Hispanic, or non-Hispanic White in the U.S. (n = 16,926), The associations of multiple jobholding with self-reported hypertension by sex were assessed using modified Poisson regressions. Both the number of working hours per week and race/ethnicity were assessed as moderators using multiplicative interaction terms. Multiple jobholding was not associated with hypertension among women. However, there was a significant three-way interaction such that multiple jobholding was associated with hypertension among non-Hispanic Black men who worked ≥55 hours per week (relative risk = 1.02, 95% confidence interval = 1.01-1.05). The results suggest that the associations between multiple jobholding, number of working hours, and hypertension should be examined at the intersection of race/ethnicity and sex. Future studies should further characterize multiple jobholding and hypertension among non-Hispanic Black men.
