RESUMEN

We review all the published literature and show that there is no experimental evidence for homogeneous tin titanate SnTiO3 in bulk or thin-film form. Instead a combination of unrelated artefacts are easily misinterpreted. The x-ray Bragg data are contaminated by double scattering from the Si substrate, giving a strong line at the 2θ angle exactly where perovskite SnTiO3 should appear. The strong dielectric divergence near 560 K is irreversible and arises from oxygen site detrapping, accompanied by Warburg/Randles interfacial anomalies. The small (4 µC cm-2) apparent ferroelectric hysteresis remains in samples shown to be pure (Sn,Ti)O2 rutile/cassiterite, in which ferroelectricity is forbidden. Only very recent work reveals real bulk SnTiO3, but it possesses an ilmenite-like structure with an elaborate array of stacking faults, not suitable for ferroelectric devices. Unpublished TEM data reveal an inhomogeneous SnO layered structured thin films, related to shell-core structures. The harsh conclusion is that there is a combination of unrelated artefacts masquerading as ferroelectricity in powders and ALD films; and only a trace of a second phase in PLD film data suggests any perovskite content at all. The fact that x-ray, dielectric, and hysteresis data all lead to the wrong conclusion is instructive and reminds us of earlier work on copper calcium titanate (a well-known boundary-layer capacitor).

RESUMEN

Among the various forms of natural energies, heat is the most prevalent and least harvested energy. Scavenging and detecting stray thermal energy for conversion into electrical energy can provide a cost-effective and reliable energy source for modern electrical appliances and sensor applications. Along with this, flexible devices have attracted considerable attention in scientific and industrial communities as wearable and implantable harvesters in addition to traditional thermal sensor applications. This review mainly discusses thermal energy conversion through pyroelectric phenomena in various lead-free as well as lead-based ceramics and polymers for flexible pyroelectric energy harvesting and sensor applications. The corresponding thermodynamic heat cycles and figures of merit of the pyroelectric materials for energy harvesting and heat sensing applications are also briefly discussed. Moreover, this study provides guidance on designing pyroelectric materials for flexible pyroelectric and hybrid energy harvesting.

Bladder exstrophy epispadias complex (BEEC) is a severe congenital anomaly; however, the genetic and molecular mechanisms underlying the formation of BEEC remain unclear. TP63, a member of TP53 tumor suppressor gene family, is expressed in bladder urothelium and skin over the external genitalia during mammalian development. It plays a role in bladder development. We have previously shown that p63(-/-) mouse embryos developed a bladder exstrophy phenotype identical to human BEEC. We hypothesised that TP63 is involved in human BEEC pathogenesis. RNA was extracted from BEEC foreskin specimens and, as in mice, ΔNp63 was the predominant p63 isoform. ΔNp63 expression in the foreskin and bladder epithelium of BEEC patients was reduced. DNA was sequenced from 163 BEEC patients and 285 ethnicity-matched controls. No exon mutations were detected. Sequencing of the ΔNp63 promoter showed 7 single nucleotide polymorphisms and 4 insertion/deletion (indel) polymorphisms. Indel polymorphisms were associated with an increased risk of BEEC. Significantly the sites of indel polymorphisms differed between Caucasian and non-Caucasian populations. A 12-base-pair deletion was associated with an increased risk with only Caucasian patients (p = 0.0052 Odds Ratio (OR) = 18.33), whereas a 4-base-pair insertion was only associated with non-Caucasian patients (p = 0.0259 OR = 4.583). We found a consistent and statistically significant reduction in transcriptional efficiencies of the promoter sequences containing indel polymorphisms in luciferase assays. These findings suggest that indel polymorphisms of the ΔNp63 promoter lead to a reduction in p63 expression, which could lead to BEEC.

This research explores a novel two-terminal heterostructure of the Pt/Cu2Se/Sb2Se3/FTO memristor, which exhibited essential biological synaptic functions. These synaptic functions play a critical role in emulating biological neural systems and overcoming the limitations of traditional computing architectures. By repeating a fixed pulse train, in this study, we realized a few crucial neural functions toward weight modulation, such as nonlinear conductance changes and potentiation/depression characteristics, which aid the transition of short-term memory to long-term memory. However, we also employed multilevel switching, which provides easily accessible multilevel (4-states, 2-bit) states, for high-density data storage capability along with endurance (102 pulse cycles for each state) in our proposed device. In terms of synaptic plasticity, the device performed well by controlling the pulse voltage and pulse width during excitatory post-synaptic current (EPSC) measurements. The spike-time-dependent plasticity (STDP) highlights their outstanding functional properties, indicating that the device can be used in artificial biological synapse applications. The artificial neural network with Pt/Cu2Se/Sb2Se3/FTO achieved a significant accuracy of 73% in the simulated Modified National Institute of Standards and Technology database (MNIST) pattern. The conduction mechanism of resistive switching and the artificial synaptic phenomena could be attributed to the transfer of Se2- ions and selenium vacancies. The neuromorphic characteristics of the Pt/Cu2Se/Sb2Se3/FTO devices demonstrate their potential as futuristic synaptic devices.

Among various energy harvester paradigms, the simple cantilever-structured magneto-mechano-electric (MME) energy generator comprises a piezoelectric material laminated on a magnetostrictive metal plate and permanent magnets as proof mass, exhibiting excellent magnetic energy-harvesting performance. The current challenge in using MME energy harvesters is the mechano-electric coupling at the interface between the piezoelectric material and magnetostrictive metal layer, which depends significantly on the mechanical properties of the interfacial adhesive layer. In this study, the effects of four types of adhesive interfacial layers on the output power and environmental and fatigue resistances of MME harvesters are systematically investigated. An optimized MME energy generator with an adhesive interfacial layer of 18.8 µm thickness and elastic modulus of 3.1 GPa achieves colossal enhancement (∼300%) with a maximum output power density of 0.92 mW/cm2, while a 10 Oe (=10 G = 1 mT in air; 60 Hz) magnetic field is applied. In addition, the generator exhibits a robust endurance of continuous 108 fatigue cycles and excellent temperature stability in the range of -30 to 70 °C. The presented MME generator, which harvests stray magnetic energy reliably, is promising as a low-cost and efficient autonomous power source for Internet of Things devices, wireless sensor networks, and so on.

An enhanced self-powered near-ultraviolet photodetection phenomenon was observed in epitaxial gallium nitride (GaN) nanorods network grown on an intermediate layer of N:GaN on a nitridated HfO2(N:HfO2)/SiO2/p-Si substrate. The fabricated Au/GaN/N:GaN/N:HfO2/Ag heterostructure exhibited a giant change (OFF/ON ratio > 50 without applying any external electrical field) in its conductance when illuminated by a very weak (25 mW cm-2) near-UV monochromatic light with a low dark current (nearly 20 nA). The presented near-UV photodetector offers photoresponsivity of ∼2.4 mA W-1 at an applied voltage of 1 V. We observed an optically generated internal open circuit voltage of ∼155 mV and short circuit current ∼430 nA, which can be attributed to the quantum confinement of free charge carriers in the nanorod matrix. Interestingly, it also shows a negative capacitance after near-UV illumination. It has great potential as a self-powered UV photodetector and in metamaterial applications.

The prevalence of vesicoureteral reflux (VUR) has been estimated as. 4 to 1.8% among the pediatric population. In children with urinary tract infection the prevalence is typically from 30-50% with higher incidence occurring in infancy. When correction of VUR is determined to be necessary, traditionally open ureteral reimplantation by a variety of techniques has been the mainstay of treatment. This approach is justified because surgical correction affords a very high success rate of 99% in experienced hands and a low complication rate. In that context the purpose of this review article is to highlight the use of laparoscopy and robot-assisted techniques to perform ureteric reimplantation for the management of pediatric VUR. A detailed review of recent literature on the subject is performed to find out various aspects of minimally invasive surgery in the treatment of VUR, highlighting evolution of management approaches, operative steps, complications, results and the current status in clinical practice. We also share our experience on the subject.

RESUMEN

Fecal soiling or intractable constipation frequently occurs in association with urinary incontinence in children with varying pathologic conditions. To manage double incontinence or the combination of wetting and severe constipation, a Mitrofanoff conduit and a channel for antegrade continence enema is constructed using the appendix by open surgery. We present a video of the first case of robot-assisted laparoscopy for simultaneous reconstruction of a continent urinary diversion using the Mitrofanoff principle and a Malone antegrade continent enema using the divided appendix.

In that context the purpose of presenting our surgical technique: laparoscopic intravesical ureteric reimplantation is to highlight the use of laparoscopy to perform ureteric reimplantation for the management of pediatric VUR.
