RESUMEN

Two-dimensional materials have emerged as an important research frontier for overcoming the challenges in nanoelectronics and for exploring new physics. Among them, black phosphorus, with a combination of a tunable bandgap and high mobility, is one of the most promising systems. In particular, black phosphorus nanoribbons show excellent electrostatic gate control, which can mitigate short-channel effects in nanoscale transistors. Controlled synthesis of black phosphorus nanoribbons, however, has remained an outstanding problem. Here we report large-area growth of black phosphorus nanoribbons directly on insulating substrates. We seed the chemical vapour transport growth with black phosphorus nanoparticles and obtain uniform, single-crystal nanoribbons oriented exclusively along the [100] crystal direction. With comprehensive structural calculations, we discover that self-passivation at the zigzag edges holds the key to the preferential one-dimensional growth. Field-effect transistors based on individual nanoribbons exhibit on/off ratios up to ~104, confirming the good semiconducting behaviour of the nanoribbons. These results demonstrate the potential of black phosphorus nanoribbons for nanoelectronic devices and also provide a platform for investigating the exotic physics in black phosphorus.

RESUMEN

Neurons in the central nervous system (CNS) are distinguished by the neurotransmitter types they release, their synaptic connections, morphology, and genetic profiles. To fully understand how the CNS works, it is critical to identify all neuronal classes and reveal their synaptic connections. The retina has been extensively used to study neuronal development and circuit formation. Here, we describe a previously unidentified interneuron in mammalian retina. This interneuron shares some morphological, physiological, and molecular features with retinal bipolar cells, such as receiving input from photoreceptors and relaying visual signals to retinal ganglion cells. It also shares some features with amacrine cells (ACs), particularly Aii-ACs, such as their neurite morphology in the inner plexiform layer, the expression of some AC-specific markers, and possibly the release of the inhibitory neurotransmitter glycine. Thus, we unveil an uncommon interneuron, which may play an atypical role in vision.

RESUMEN

Superhydrophobic fabrics have great application potential in many fields including wearable electronic devices, sports textiles, and human health monitoring, but good water impalement resistance and stretching stability are the prerequisites. Here, we report the design of waterborne superhydrophobic fabrics with high impalement resistance and stretching stability by constructing elastic reconfigurable micro-/micro-/nanostructures. Following theoretical analysis, two approaches were proposed and employed: (i) regulating distance between the microfibers of polyester fabrics to decrease the solid-liquid contact area, and (ii) forming reconfigurable two-tier hierarchical micro-/nanostructures on the microfibers by stretching during dipping to further decrease the solid-liquid contact area. The effects of microfiber distance and micro-/nanostructures on microfibers on superhydrophobicity and impalement resistance were studied. The superhydrophobic fabrics show excellent impalement resistance as verified by high-speed water impact, water jetting, and rainfall, etc. The fabrics also show excellent stretching stability, as 100% stretching and 1000 cycles of cyclic 100% stretching-releasing have no obvious influence on superhydrophobicity. Additionally, the fabrics show good antifouling property, self-cleaning performance, as well as high abrasion and washing stability. The experimental results agree with the theoretical simulation very well. We anticipate that this study will boost the development of impalement-resistant and stretching-stable superhydrophobic surfaces.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study is to demonstrate whether radiomics based on an automatic segmentation method is feasible for predicting molecular subtypes. METHODS: This retrospective study included 516 patients with confirmed breast cancer. An automatic segmentation-3-dimensional UNet-based Convolutional Neural Networks, trained on our in-house data set-was applied to segment the regions of interest. A set of 1316 radiomics features per region of interest was extracted. Eighteen cross-combination radiomics methods-with 6 feature selection methods and 3 classifiers-were used for model selection. Model classification performance was assessed using the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC), accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity. RESULTS: The average dice similarity coefficient value of the automatic segmentation was 0.89. The radiomics models were predictive of 4 molecular subtypes with the best average: AUC = 0.8623, accuracy = 0.6596, sensitivity = 0.6383, and specificity = 0.8775. For luminal versus nonluminal subtypes, AUC = 0.8788 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.8505-0.9071), accuracy = 0.7756, sensitivity = 0.7973, and specificity = 0.7466. For human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2)-enriched versus non-HER2-enriched subtypes, AUC = 0.8676 (95% CI, 0.8370-0.8982), accuracy = 0.7737, sensitivity = 0.8859, and specificity = 0.7283. For triple-negative breast cancer versus non-triple-negative breast cancer subtypes, AUC = 0.9335 (95% CI, 0.9027-0.9643), accuracy = 0.9110, sensitivity = 0.4444, and specificity = 0.9865. CONCLUSIONS: Radiomics based on automatic segmentation of magnetic resonance imaging can predict breast cancer of 4 molecular subtypes noninvasively and is potentially applicable in large samples.

RESUMEN

Superamphiphobic surfaces progress rapidly but suffer from the issues of low repellency to hot liquids, complicated and nonaqueous preparation methods, and low durability. Here, a simple waterborne approach is developed to fabricate robust superamphiphobic fabrics with excellent hot liquid repellency and hot water vapor resistance. First, a perfluorodecyl polysiloxane (FD-POS) aqueous suspension was prepared by hydrolytic cocondensation of (3-glycidyloxy propyl)trimethoxysilane and 1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluorodecyltriethoxysilane with SiO2 particles. Then, the superamphiphobic fabrics were fabricated by dipping polyester fabrics in the suspension, which were then cured. The fabrics show excellent superamphiphobicity owing to the combination of the hierarchical micro-/nanostructure and FD-POS with very low surface energy. The superamphiphobic fabrics feature excellent hot liquid repellency even for a large volume of 130.0 °C soybean oil and condensed small droplets from ∼90.0 °C water vapor. This is attributed to its high superamphiphobicity, excellent hot water vapor resistance, and outstanding thermal durability. In addition, the superamphiphobic fabrics exhibit high mechanical and chemical durability against washing, abrasion, and immersion in corrosive or organic liquids. Thus, hot liquid repellent superamphiphobic fabrics may find applications in various fields such as antiadhesion of various hot liquids and in efficiently preventing scalding.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To retrospectively analyze CT and MR imaging features of the brain in patients with hydrogen sulfide poisoning based on clinical symptom grading and to investigate their correlations with clinical symptoms and patients' prognosis. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed of CT and MR imaging data of the brain in 40 patients with hydrogen sulfide poisoning in our hospital. There were four main imaging manifestations. Patients were clinically graded according to the central nervous system symptom scores of the Poisoning Severity Score (PSS) and staged according to the gas inhalation time segment. Based on clinical symptom grading, the frequencies and proportions of four imaging signs that occurred in each group were counted, their development trends were analyzed, and the correlations of imaging features with clinical grading and prognosis were calculated. RESULTS: Forty patients were divided into minor, moderate and severe clinical grades and classified into four stages. In patients with minor and moderate clinical grading, only one patient suffered from generalized brain edema at stage 1, with a good prognosis. Patients with severe clinical grade showed the highest probability of presenting with the four imaging signs. The imaging signs were correlated with the severe clinical grade and a poor prognosis (P = 0.000, R = 0.828; P = 0.000, R = 0.858). CONCLUSION: In patients with the severe clinical grade, generalized brain edema and symmetrical hypodensity/abnormal signals in the bilateral basal ganglia and around the lateral ventricles were the main findings and were shown to persist. The presence of imaging signs can assist in the clinically effective evaluation of clinical symptom grade.

RESUMEN

The circular replication-associated protein (Rep)-encoding ssDNA (CRESS-DNA) viruses show high diversity and have a very wide range of hosts, including all three domains of cellular life. In the present study, a novel CRESS DNA virus, provisionally named "kirkovirus HNU-XX-2020" was discovered in a growing pig with watery diarrhea. The virus has a circular genome of 2961 nucleotides (nt) and three major putative open reading frames (ORFs), encoding a Rep protein (327 amino acids), a capsid protein (175 amino acids), and one protein (209 amino acids) of unknown function. The genome showed the highest sequence similarity (68.6% identity) to the genome of porcine circo-like virus 51 (JF713719), which was identified in pig faeces, and it showed very limited sequence similarity (less than 40% identity) to other virus genomes. Further phylogenetic analysis suggested that it could be a novel member in the proposed family "Kirkoviridae".

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: To conduct a retrospective evaluation of a large clinical implementation of combined pulse oximeter (POX) and cardiac auscultation as a fast-screening device for congenital heart disease (CHD). METHODS: Every newborn in a large maternity healthcare center received auscultation and POX screening within 24 hours after delivery. When an abnormal heart murmur or SpO2 level was detected, an echocardiogram was ordered to confirm the diagnosis of CHD. RESULTS: From January 1, 2018 to December 31, 2019, there were 44,147 livebirths at the studied hospital where 498 suspected CHD were identified: 27 newborns by POX screening and 471 by cardiac auscultation. The diagnosis was further confirmed in 458 neonates through echocardiogram. This result put forth an overall diagnosis rate of 92.0%. Cardiac auscultation detected the majority of CHD cases 438 (95.6%) while POX only screened 20 (4.4%) cases. Interestingly, no CHD case was detected by both auscultation examination and POX screening. Auscultation detected most of the common types of CHD, but POX excelled in identifying rare and critical cases. POX screening alone had a very low accuracy of 74.07% in positive predict value (PPV). On the other hand, auscultation functioned well in terms of PPV and negative predict value (NPV) (92.99 and 99.95%, respectively), but the addition of POX improved the overall screening performance resulting in 100% NPV. We also validate the finding with the data 6 months after the study period. CONCLUSION: Our study demonstrated that addition of pulse oximetry to routine cardiac auscultation could be used as an accurate and feasible screening for early screening of CHD in newborns in large-scale clinical practice.

RESUMEN

With the extensive application of wireless sensing nodes, the demand for sustainable energy in unattended environments is increasing. Here, we report a self-powered and autonomous vibrational wake-up system (SAVWS) based on triboelectric nanogenerators and micro-electromechanical system (MEMS) switches. The energy triboelectric nanogenerator (E-TENG) harvests vibration energy to power the wireless transmitter through a MEMS switch. The signal triboelectric nanogenerator (S-TENG) controls the state of the MEMS switch as a self-powered accelerometer and shows good linearity in the acceleration range of 1-4.5 m/s2 at 30 Hz with a sensitivity of about 14.6 V/(m/s2). When the acceleration increases, the S-TENG turns on the MEMS switch, and the wireless transmitter transmits an alarm signal with the energy from E-TENG, using only 0.64 mJ. Using TENGs simultaneously as an energy source and a sensor, the SAVWS provides a self-powered vibration monitoring solution for unattended environments and shows extensive applications and great promise in smart factories, autonomous driving, and the Internet of Things.

RESUMEN

Immunologic changes in the hematoma of patients with intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) and the contribution of these changes to prognosis are unknown. We collected the blood samples and hematoma fluid from 35 patients with acute ICH (<30 hours from symptom onset) and 55 age-matched healthy controls. Using flow cytometry and ELISA, we found that the percentages of granulocytes, regulatory T cells, helper T (Th) 17 cells, and dendritic cells were higher in the peripheral blood of patients with ICH than in healthy controls, whereas the percentages of lymphocytes, M1-like macrophages, and M2-like macrophages were lower. Levels of IL-6, IL-17, IL-23, TNF-α, IL-4, IL-10, and TGF-ß were higher in the peripheral blood of patients with ICH. The absolute counts of white blood cells, lymphocytes, monocytes, and granulocytes in the hematoma tended to be greater at 12-30 hours than they were within 12 hours after ICH, but the percentage of Th cells decreased in peripheral blood. Increased levels of IL-10 in the serum and hematoma, and a reduction in M1-like macrophages in hematoma were independently associated with favorable outcome on day 90. These results indicate that immunocytes present in the hematoma may participate in the acute-phase inflammatory response after ICH.

RESUMEN

Sigma-1 (σ-1) receptor agonists are considered as potential treatment for stroke. TS-157 is an alkoxyisoxazole-based σ-1 receptor agonist previously discovered in our group. The present study describes TS-157 profile in a battery of tests for cerebral ischemia. Initial evaluation demonstrated the compound's safety profile and blood-brain barrier permeability, as well as its ability to induce neurite outgrowth in vitro. The neurite outgrowth was shown to be mediated via σ-1 receptor agonism and involves upregulation of ERK phosphorylation (pERK). In particular, TS-157 also significantly accelerated the recovery of motor function in rats with transient middle cerebral artery occlusion (tMCAO). Overall, the results herein support the notion that σ-1 receptor agonists are potential therapeutics for stroke and further animal efficacy studies are warranted.

RESUMEN

A general blind deconvolution algorithmic framework is developed for sources of opportunity (e.g., ships at known locations) in an ocean waveguide. Here, both channel impulse responses (CIRs) and unknown source signals need to be simultaneously estimated from only the recorded signals on a receiver array using blind deconvolution, which is generally an ill-posed problem without any a priori information or additional assumptions about the underlying structure of the CIRs. By exploiting the typical ray-like arrival-time structure of the CIRs between a surface source and the elements of a vertical line array (VLA) in ocean waveguides, a principle component analysis technique is applied to build a bilinear parametric model linking the amplitudes and arrival-times of the CIRs across all channels for a variety of admissible ocean environments. The bilinear channel representation further reduces the dimension of the channel parametric model compared to linear models. A truncated power interaction deconvolution algorithm is then developed by applying the bilinear channel model to the traditional subspace deconvolution method. Numerical and experimental results demonstrate the robustness of this blind deconvolution methodology.

RESUMEN

A polydopamine magnetic composite (PDA@Fe3O4) was prepared for the extraction of human genomic DNA and characterized by transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, FT-IR spectrometer, zeta potential and vibrating sample magnetometry. PDA@Fe3O4 based on magnetic solid phase extraction (MSPE) method have highly efficient capture of genomic deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA)and gene fragments ranging from about 100 bp to 200 bp. Compared with commercial beads (Shenggong, China) and spin column nucleic acid extraction kit (Tiangen, China), the PDA coated magnetic nanoparticles display superior genomic DNA extraction capacity (116 mg/g) and yield (90.2%). The isolation protocol used the solutions (composed of PEG and NaCl) with a specific pH for the binding and release of DNA. The procedure can be attributed to the charge switch of amino and hydroxyl groups on surface of the magnetic particle. The extracted DNA with high quality (A260/A280 = 1.82 ±â€¯0.04) can be directly used as template for polymerase chain reaction (PCR) followed by agarose gel electrophoresis. The results showed the new composite to be an ideal adsorbent for separation of DNA which had the advantage of its low cost, high extraction capacity and yield.

RESUMEN

Astroviruses (AstVs) have a very wide range of hosts and are associated with enteric and extra-enteric disease in mammals and birds. Cross-species transmission of AstVs has been observed frequently. In the present study, the genome of a novel astrovirus from Amur tigers (Panthera tigris) from a zoo in China was characterized and was found to have the typical genomic features of other mammal AstVs. It showed the highest nucleotide sequence similarity (46.1-87.3% identity) to AstVs from cats, indicating a close phylogenetic relationship and possible cross-species transmission between them. To our knowledge, this is the first identification and characterization of AstV from tigers, and this virus is the third astrovirus identified in hosts of the family Felidae. The results of this study will be helpful for understanding the origin, genetic diversity, and cross-species transmission of AstV.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE) during pregnancy and puerperal periods is significantly higher than during the non-pregnant period and is one of the major causes of maternal mortality. Developed countries have promulgated guidelines for risk assessment and prevention of maternal VTE, and standardized management has led to a significant reduction in maternal mortality. However, there is a paucity of relevant research related to pregnancy and puerperal VTE in China. METHODS/DESIGN: We will perform a prospective cohort study and recruit 13,000 pregnant women from 2018 to 2020 in Beijing, China. VTE risk assessment will be conducted using the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG) pregnancy and puerperal VTE risk-assessment-scoring tool during early and late pregnancy, as well as during the puerperal period. Venous ultrasonography of lower extremities, routine blood tests, and coagulation parameters will be examined. These VTE risk assessments will be performed again if patients have VTE-related symptoms during their pregnancies, or if any of the following occur: (1) patients are hospitalized over 7 days due to any pregnancy complications; (2) patients are placed under strict bed rest for ≥ 3 days to prevent miscarriage. For patients with a confirmed diagnosis of VTE, treatment and follow-up plans will be decided jointly by the obstetricians, vascular surgeons, and pulmonologists. All patients in the study will be followed up by dedicated healthcare providers for up to 42 days postpartum. Statistical analyses will be performed to test the feasibility of the RCOG scoring tool for the Chinese population. The RCOG scoring tool will then be revised based upon the characteristics of the Chinese population, and the revised assessment scoring tool will then be tested in the cohort to evaluate its efficacy. Finally, a pregnancy and puerperal VTE risk-assessment tool will be proposed based on our study results. DISCUSSION: This study will establish a preliminary VTE risk-assessment tool that is applicable to pregnant and puerperal women in China and provide guidelines for further thrombophylactic interventions. Furthermore, we wish to draw increased attention to pregnancy-associated VTE to reduce VTE-related mortality. TRIAL REGISTRATION: Chi CTR1800015848 (04/24/2018).

RESUMEN

Objective To investigate the role of RNA binding protein─upstream-of-N-Ras (UNR) in the development of glioma and its molecular mechanism. Methods First, bioinformatics analysis of CGGA database was performed to detect UNR expression level and prognosis of patients with glioma. Western blot and real-time PCR were used to detect UNR expression level in glioma cell lines and tissues. Next, UNR siRNAs were transfected in glioma cells, and MTS assay and scratch wound-healing assay were used to detect changes in cell proliferation and migration. Then, the candidate UNR target mRNAs were identified by analyzing the sequencing data of UNR iCLIP-seq, RNA sequencing and ribosome profiling databases of human melanoma. RNA immunoprecipitation and biotin pull-down assays were used to identify the UNR target mRNAs in glioma cells. Finally, western blot was used to detect the effect of UNR knockdown on ribosomal protein L9 (RPL9) and RPL9 protein expression level in glioma cell lines. RPL9 siRNA was transfected in A172 and T98G and the expression of vimentin in the cells was detected with western blot. Results Bioinformatics analysis showed that UNR mRNA expression level was significantly higher in high-grade glioma [Grade 2 (n=126), Grade 3 (n=51), Grade 4 (n=128), P<0.001]. UNR high expression levels were associated with poor prognosis (P=0.0177). UNR had high expression level in glioma cell lines and patient samples compared with normal cell lines and normal brain samples (P<0.01). Knockdown of UNR inhibited glioma cells migration (P<0.05), but did not inhibit glioma cells growth in three glioma cell lines. UNR binded the 3' untranslated region (UTR) of PTEN and RPL9 mRNAs. RPL9 protein was significantly highly expressed in most glioma cell lines (n=9) and knockdown of UNR resulted in a downregulation of RPL9 protein expression. Epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT)-related marker─vimentin was positively regulated by RPL9.Conclusions UNR could bind to the 3'UTR of PTEN and RPL9 in glioma cell lines, therefore promoting glioma cell migration and regulating the expression of RPL9. Here, we establish a link between UNR and RPL9 protein, which will provide new ideas for the further study of glioma.

RESUMEN

Although subseafloor sediments are known to harbour a vast number of microbial cells, the distribution, diversity, and origins of fungal populations remain largely unexplored. In this study, we cultivated fungi from 34 of 47 deep coal-associated sediment samples collected at depths ranging from 1289 to 2457 m below the seafloor (mbsf) off the Shimokita Peninsula, Japan (1118 m water depth). We obtained a total of 69 fungal isolates under strict contamination controls, representing 61 Ascomycota (14 genera, 23 species) and 8 Basidiomycota (4 genera, 4 species). Penicillium and Aspergillus relatives were the most dominant genera within the Ascomycetes, followed by the members of genera Cladosporium, Hamigera, Chaetomium, Eutypella, Acremonium, Aureobasidium, Candida, Eurotium, Exophiala, Nigrospora, Bionectria and Pseudocercosporella. Four Basidiomycota species were identified as genera Schizophyllum, Irpex, Bjerkandera and Termitomyces. Among these isolates, Cladosporium sphaerospermum and Aspergillus sydowii relatives were isolated from a thin lignite coal-sandstone formation at 2457 mbsf. Our results indicate that these cultivable fungal populations are indigenous, originating from past terrigenous environments, which have persisted, possibly as spores, through ∼20 million years of depositional history.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Limited information is available regarding the correlations between mammographic calcifications and the epidemiological features of patients with breast cancer living different lifestyles in Western China. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the relationship between mammographic calcifications and the epidemiological characteristics of female patients with breast cancer in Western China. METHODS: This was a hospital-based, retrospective, multi-center epidemiological study of patients with breast cancer. Using the Western China Clinical Cooperation Group (WCCCG) database, we obtained the records of 7317 patients (with mammographic data) diagnosed with breast cancer between March 2011 and June 2016. These patients were divided into Groups I (mass alone) and II (mass combined with calcification), and their clinical and pathological data were compared. RESULTS: A total of 4211 patients were enrolled in Group I, and 3106 patients were enrolled in Group II. The tumors in Group II were more likely to be larger (P < 0.0001), higher grade (P = 0.0029), estrogen receptor (ER)+/progesterone receptor (PR)- (P = 0.0319), and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER-2)-positive (P < 0.0001), and to have axillary lymph node metastasis (P = 0.0033) than those in Group I. Regarding treatment, patients in Group II were more likely to have undergone chemotherapy (P = 0.0108) and anti-HER2 therapy (P = 0.0102), whereas patients in Group I were more likely to have undergone endocrine therapy (P < 0.0001). CONCLUSIONS: In conclusion, mammographic calcifications in tumors were associated with distinct clinicopathologic characteristics and aggressive treatments.

RESUMEN

This paper presents a technique for solving the multichannel blind deconvolution problem. The authors observe the convolution of a single (unknown) source with K different (unknown) channel responses; from these channel outputs, the authors want to estimate both the source and the channel responses. The authors show how this classical signal processing problem can be viewed as solving a system of bilinear equations, and in turn can be recast as recovering a rank-1 matrix from a set of linear observations. Results of prior studies in the area of low-rank matrix recovery have identified effective convex relaxations for problems of this type and efficient, scalable heuristic solvers that enable these techniques to work with thousands of unknown variables. The authors show how a priori information about the channels can be used to build a linear model for the channels, which in turn makes solving these systems of equations well-posed. This study demonstrates the robustness of this methodology to measurement noises and parametrization errors of the channel impulse responses with several stylized and shallow water acoustic channel simulations. The performance of this methodology is also verified experimentally using shipping noise recorded on short bottom-mounted vertical line arrays.

RESUMEN

A photodetector with a high spectrum selectivity and enhanced responsivity has been realized in the ZnO NPs coated Au/ZnO/Au structure. In this structure, the ZnO NPs act as the "filter" that filtrates out the short-wavelength photons to ensure the high spectrum selectivity of the photodetector, whereas on the other hand they act as the "scatterer" to scatter incident light in order to increase the absorption of the ZnO film and consequently enhance the responsivity of the photodetector. In this way, a photodetector with a response width of only 10 nm has been obtained, and the responsivity of the photodetector is 0.052 A W(-1) at 3 V at the wavelength of 376 nm, which is higher than that of the bare Au/ZnO/Au structured photodetector (0.028 A W(-1)). The results reported in this paper may provide a facile route to a highly spectrum-selective photodetector without performance degradation.
