BACKGROUND: While single-method studies have reported on the effectiveness of simulated interprofessional teaching, our understanding of its full effects remains incomplete. Teaching design also provides no relevant theoretical guidance, which reduces the scientific quality and rigor of research. The purpose of this work was to study the effects of the simulated interprofessional education (SIPE) teaching model based on the 3P theory on the course of "Clinical Critical Thinking Training" through a convergent mixed method, and to provide the basis for future teaching design. METHODS: A convergent mixed-method design was used, which consisted of a survey and a semi-structured interview. Data collection took place from September 2021 to July 2022. A cluster sampling method was used to select 60 full-time nursing students from a school in China, and randomly divide them into a control group of 36 and an experimental group of 24. According to the principle of voluntary participation, 6 students majoring in clinical medicine and 6 students majoring in pharmacy were recruited to join the experimental group to form an interprofessional team. The students studied "Clinical Critical Thinking Training" together, in which the control group used traditional simulation teaching and the experimental group used SIPE. The CCTDI (California Critical Thinking Disposition Inventory) and AITCS-II Student (Assessment of Interprofessional Team Collaboration in Student Learning Scale) were used for quantitative evaluation before and after the course, and descriptive statistics and Mann-Whitney U test were used to compare the critical thinking and interprofessional collaboration skills of the two groups of students. Semi-structured interviews were used for qualitative evaluation. Thematic analysis was used to understand student development on the basis of inter-professional core competencies and learning experience. RESULTS: The students' interprofessional cooperation abilities and critical thinking scores improved compared with the beginning of the course, but the scores of the experimental group were significantly higher than the control group (p < 0.05). Three themes emerged regarding simulated interprofessional teaching: clarifying team positioning, improving team efficiency, and optimizing the learning experience. CONCLUSION: SIPE can build students' critical thinking, teamwork, and interprofessional core competencies, which makes it a useful teaching design.

Although Radix Paeoniae Alba (RPA) has been ranked as one of the top 6 herbs used frequently to prevent and treat miscarriages clinically, there is no clear evidence regarding its safety in embryonic development. This study aims to evaluate the potential impacts of RPA on embryonic stem cells (ESCs) and pregnant mice. Cytotoxicity assays of the extract were performed in ESCs and 3T3 cells. Pregnant ICR mice were orally treated with RPA extracts at dosages of 0 (G1 group as negative controls), 2, 8 and 32 g/kg/day (G2, G3 and G4 groups) respectively from the gestation day (Gd) 6-15. On Gd 18, there was no significant difference in the IC50 values between ESCs and 3T3 cells (p > 0.05). There was no significant difference in the maternal and fetal evaluations among four groups (p > 0.05). Fetal IL-2, IL-2r, TNF-α, TNF-αr, IL-4, IL-4r, IL-10r, IL-17 and IL-17r of G4 group were significantly lower than G1 group (p < 0.05). In conclusion, RPA at dosage of 32 g/kg/day (16-folds of human daily dosage) did not cause adverse impact in cultured ESCs and pregnant mice. RPA might down-regulate fetal Th1/Th2/Th17 cytokines and receptors maybe beneficial to embryonic survival and development. Copyright © 2017 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Calcifying fibrous tumor (CFT) is a rare benign soft tissue tumor of unknown etiology and extremely rare in female reproductive system. We present a case of unusual CFT in the ampulla of fallopian tube occurring in a middle-aged female patient with multiple uterine leiomyomas. A hysterectomy was performed on a 48-year-old woman for uterine leiomyomas. At surgery, a solitary, well-defined nodule, measuring 1.0 cm in diameter, was incidentally observed on the wall of ampulla of right fallopian tube. The lesion of fallopian tube was resected totally. Histologically, this lesion was unencapsulated and composed of hyalinized collagenous fibrous tissue with psammomatous calcification and focal lymphoplasmacytic infiltrate. Sparsely fibroblast-like spindle cells were scattered in the dense hyalinized background with bland nuclei. By immunohistochemistry, vimentin was diffusely positive in most cells, and a focal reactivity for CD34 was also observed in spindle cells. However, they were negative for cytokeratin (AE1/AE3), S-100 protein, CD117, DOG1, SMA, desmin, and ALK. The Ki-67 labeling index of the lesion was <1%. A diagnosis of primary CFT of fallopian tube was made. To our knowledge, this is the first report of CFT occurring in female reproductive tract. Awareness of CFT and its distinctive features is important to avoid a diagnostic pitfall caused by histologic similarities to other spindle cell or calcifying lesions in unusual locations. Although marginal excision is usually adequate for most of CFT, long-term follow-up is suggested as delayed recurrence might occur infrequently.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Both macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) and DJ-1 protein have been shown to relate with cell invasion and metastasis in tumors. However, the role of DJ-1 in invasion and metastasis of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) and its relation to MIF expression in NPC are not fully understood. The aim of present study is to determine whether or not MIF and DJ-1 are correlated with tumor invasion and influence a worse outcome in NPC, as well as its related mechanism. METHODS: 125 cases of NPC and 45 normal tissues of nasopharynx were collected. The expression of MIF and DJ-1 in tissue microarray was evaluated by immunohistochemical staining. Correlation between immunostainings and clinicopathological parameters, as well as the follow-up data of patients, was analyzed statistically. The association of MIF and DJ-1 with cell invasion and migration in NPC cell line were evaluated by small interfering RNA (siRNA) transfection, invasion assay and Western blotting. RESULTS: MIF and DJ-1 staining was diffused and strong in tumor cells, whereas they were generally weaker and less common in normal lining epithelia of nasopharynx. High MIF expression in tumor cells (71.2%, 89/125 cases) were significantly associated with advanced clinical stage, lymph node metastasis, and worse prognosis of NPC patients. High expression of DJ-1 (75.2%, 94/125 cases) were closely correlated to lymph node metastasis and MIF high-expression. Only MIF high expression (P = 0.010) and lymph node metastasis (P = 0.004) emerged as strong independent prognostic factors for overall survival of NPC patients. In vitro, down-regulated expression of DJ-1 in NPC cell lines by siRNA was observed to reduce cell migration and invasion potential, however, exogenous MIF promoted cells invasion. CONCLUSIONS: The data provided evidence that increased expression of MIF and DJ-1 induced cell invasion and metastasis of NPC, supporting the idea that MIF and DJ-1 may play important roles as regulators in the progression of NPC.

Osteoblastoma is a benign bone-forming neoplasm that occurs commonly in the posterior elements of the spine and the sacrum. However, so far there has been no report of intradural osteoblastoma described in the literature. We present a unique case of intraspinal dural-based osteoblastoma with aneurysmal bone cyst-like change without evidence of vertebral involvement. An 11-year-old Chinese girl presented with a 3-month history of gradually progressive back pain and a weakness of both lower limbs. Thoracic MRI revealed a well-demarcated subdural mass at the T5 level with heterogeneous enhancement. Histologically, the tumor was found to be attached to the dura and composed of numerous osteoid spicules and trabecular bone with diffusely scattered osteoclast-type, multinucleated giant cells. Ectactic blood vessels and blood-filled cystic spaces were also observed. A diagnosis of primary intraspinal dural-based osteoblastoma with aneurysmal bone cyst-like change was made. To our best knowledge, this is possibly the first case of primary osteoblastoma arising from meninges. Meningeal osteocartilaginous tumors are rare, with obscure histogenesis. The differential diagnosis of osteoblastoma in unusual locations is difficult and the confirmation of diagnosis should be cautiously made. Awareness of dural-based osteoblastoma and its histological features is important to avoid a diagnostic pitfall caused by histological similarities to other intra-craniospinal lesions with osteoid differentiation or bone formation.

BACKGROUND: DJ-1 is a key regulator in human tumorigenesis, including brain malignancies. The mechanisms by which DJ-1 contributes to the pathogenesis of medulloblastoma (MB) remain unclear, and its impact on the prognosis for patients with MB has not been identified. The aim of this study was to determine whether the DJ-1 protein is associated with tumorigenesis of MBs, and whether DJ-1 is a valuable factor for predicting the prognosis of patients with MB. METHODS: We collected 66 pairs of MB and adjacent normal cerebellum samples. Expression of DJ-1, Ser 473-phosphorylated-Akt (p-Akt), PTEN, and Ki-67 (MIB-1) was detected by immunohistochemical staining, and the correlation of these immunostaining results with the clinicopathological features of patients with MB was determined. RESULTS: High DJ-1 expression (48.5%, 32/66) in tumor cells of MBs was significantly associated with the classic MB variant (P = 0.003), high proliferative activity (P = 0.002) and undifferentiated tumor (P = 0.001), whereas high p-Akt expression (56.1%, 37/66) was associated with tumor metastasis stage (P = 0.007), undifferentiated tumor (P = 0.007), and high-risk tumor (P = 0.002). High DJ-1 expression also correlated with high p-Akt expression and high MIB-1 index. However, only high levels of DJ-1(P = 0.009) and high MIB-1 index (P = 0.001) were strong independent prognostic factors associated with worse overall survival. CONCLUSIONS: Although the validity of the preliminary data in this study needs to be confirmed by a larger number of cases, our study indicates that DJ-1, PTEN, and p-Akt might play important roles in cell proliferation and differentiation of MBs. The evaluation of expression of DJ-1 and related proteins might be useful for predicting the prognosis of patients with MB.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: We detected the expression of MIF and matrix metalloproteinase 9 (MMP9) in meningiomas to determine whether they are valuable recurrence predictor for meningioma. METHODS: 67 cases of meningiomas, including 57 benign tumors (WHO grade I) and 10 non-benign tumors (WHO grade II and III), were collected, and expression of MIF and MMP9 in tissue microarray was evaluated immunohistochemically. The correlations between immunostainings and clinicopathological parameters, as well as the follow-up data of patients, were analyzed statistically. RESULTS: Increased expressions of both MIF (58.2%, 39/67) and MMP9 (55.2%, 37/67) were significantly associated with microvessel density (MVD) of tumor, but only dual high-expression of MIF and MMP9 was in relation to tumor invasion (P=0.016) and tumor recurrence (P=0.001). Based on univariate analysis, histological grade, tumor invasion and co-expression of MIF and MMP9 were significant predictors for recurrence. However, only histological grade and co-expression of MIF and MMP9 in tumor were independent recurrence factors with a hazard ratio of 49.033 (P=0.002) and 37.766 (P=0.002) in multivariate analysis. CONCLUSIONS: Together with histological grade, increased co-expression of MIF and MMP9 in tumor might be a valuable predictor for recurrence, especially for benign meningiomas.

Synovial sarcoma is a rare aggressive neoplasm occurring at any site of the body, mainly in young adults. It may also arise in the CNS but has seldom been reported. We report a case of unusual intracranial synovial sarcoma in a young male patient. Neuroimaging revealed a large gadolinium-enhancing mass was located at the right anterior cranial fossa and was associated with multiple cyst formation. The mass was dural-based and was observed to invade the right orbital apex and ethmoidal bulla. Histologically, the tumor was composed of uniform oval and round cells with scant cytoplasm and indistinct borders. The tumor cells were observed to form densely cellular sheets, but in some areas, the tumor showed hemangiopericytomatous vascular pattern consisting of tumor cells arranged around dilated, thin-walled blood vessels. By immunohistochemistry, vimentin, CD99 and Bcl-2 were diffusely positive in most cells, and a focally weak reactivity for S-100 protein was also observed. However, the tumor cells were negative for cytokeratin (AE1/AE3), CK7, CK8/18, CK19, epithelial membrane antigen, CD34, synaptophysin, GFAP, desmin, myogenin, and smooth muscle actin. Cytogenetic analysis using fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) demonstrated a translocation t(X;18)(p11;q11), an aberration specific for synovial sarcoma. A diagnosis of primary dural-based poorly differentiated synovial sarcoma was made. To our knowledge, this is the first report of a poorly differentiated variant of synovial sarcoma occurring in dura mater and confirmed by cytogenetic analysis. The present case indicates that appropriate immunohistochemical analysis, and in particular molecular analysis, are essential for accurately diagnosing small, round-cell neoplasms in unusual locations.

BACKGROUND: Interprofessional education (IPE) is crucial for effective clinical practice but remains challenging to be implemented. The IPE activity using virtual simulation (VS) may potentially solve the time and space challenges of in-person interprofessional simulations. Using shared VS resources may increase the popularity of virtual teaching in conditions of limited resources. OBJECTIVES: Using shared resources, this study aimed to design and implement a VS-based IPE activity for undergraduate healthcare students, exploring the effects. DESIGN: A quasi-experimental design was used, with assessments conducted before and after the activity. SETTINGS: One university and its affiliated hospitals in south China. PARTICIPANTS: Forty-two undergraduate students majoring in nursing, clinical medicine, and rehabilitation therapy participated in this study. METHODS: A test composed of ten questions was used to evaluate knowledge of rehabilitation. The Chinese version of Critical Thinking Disposition Inventory (CTDI-CV) and the Chinese version of Assessment of Interprofessional Team Collaboration in Student Learning Scale (AITCS-II (Student)-CV) were used to evaluate critical thinking and interprofessional collaboration. Participants' opinions about the activity were assessed, considering satisfaction, perceived effectiveness, the ease of shared VS platform use, and suggestions about the activity. RESULTS: Significant improvements were shown in pre- and post-test total scores on knowledge of rehabilitation, mean scores for overall critical thinking disposition, and mean item scores on overall interprofessional team collaboration. CONCLUSIONS: The study provides a reference for designing and implementing VS-based IPE but the effects of this innovative pedagogy on students' rehabilitation knowledge, critical thinking, and interprofessional collaboration ability still need to be further confirmed. Most of the students gave positive feedback on the activity. Technical issues should be addressed to decrease their impacts on the VS practice experience.

Acidic postconditioning by transient CO2 inhalation applied within minutes after reperfusion has neuroprotective effects in the acute phase of stroke. However, the effects of delayed chronic acidic postconditioning (DCAPC) initiated during the subacute phase of stroke or other acute brain injuries are unknown. Mice received daily DCAPC by inhaling 5%/10%/20% CO2 for various durations (three cycles of 10- or 20-min CO2 inhalation/10-min break) at days 3-7, 7-21, or 3-21 after photothrombotic stroke. Grid-walk, cylinder, and gait tests were used to assess motor function. DCAPC with all CO2 concentrations significantly promoted motor functional recovery, even when DCAPC was delayed for 3-7 days. DCAPC enhanced the puncta density of GAP-43 (a marker of axon growth and regeneration) and synaptophysin (a marker of synaptogenesis) and reduced the amoeboid microglia number, glial scar thickness and mRNA expression of CD16 and CD32 (markers of proinflammatory M1 microglia) compared with those of the stroke group. Cerebral blood flow (CBF) increased in response to DCAPC. Furthermore, the mRNA expression of TDAG8 (a proton-activated G-protein-coupled receptor) was increased during the subacute phase of stroke, while DCAPC effects were blocked by systemic knockout of TDAG8, except for those on CBF. DCAPC reproduced the benefits by re-expressing TDAG8 in the peri-infarct cortex of TDAG8-/- mice infected with HBAAV2/9-CMV-TDAG8-3flag-ZsGreen. Taken together, we first showed that DCAPC promoted functional recovery and brain tissue repair after stroke with a wide therapeutic time window of at least 7 days after stroke. Brain-derived TDAG8 is a direct target of DCAPC that induces neuroreparative effects.

Macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) plays a critical role in tumorigenesis. We aim to examine the association of MIF with tumor recurrence and survival of gliomas, and to determine whether MIF is a valuable prognostic predictor for glioma patients. The expression of MIF and interleukin 8 (IL-8) was evaluated in 36 high-grade gliomas (20 glioblastoma multiforme, 13 anaplastic astrocytoma, and 3 anaplastic oligoastrocytoma) and 32 low-grade gliomas (18 fibrillary astrocytoma, 5 pilocytic astrocytoma, 5 oligodendroglioma, 3 ependymoma and 1 pleomorphic xanthoastrocytoma) by immunostaining. Intratumoral microvessel density (IMD) of tumors in relation to immunostainings and clinicopathological factors were analyzed statistically as well as the follow-up data of patients. High expression of both MIF (58.8%) and IL-8 (52.9%) was significantly associated with high-grade gliomas and increased microvessels in tumors, but only high expression of MIF was closely related to tumor recurrence (P = 0.001). High expression of IL-8 exhibited a close correlation with high expression of MIF in tumors (P = 0.001). Histological grading, high expression of MIF and IL-8 correlated with patients' overall survival in univariate analysis. However, only histological grading and MIF expression exhibited a relationship with survival of patients as independent prognostic factors of glioma by multivariate analysis; the hazard ratios were 28.012 (P = 0.001) and 11.782 (P = 0.001), respectively. Elevated production of MIF in glioma tumor cells may contribute to tumor recurrence and a worse prognosis. MIF may serve as an independent predictive factor for prognosis of glioma patients.

There are controversies regarding the histogenesis of stromal cells of hemangioblastoma, and no hypothesis has conclusively been proven. We report a case of unusual hemangioblastoma in a middle-aged man with von Hippel-Lindau disease. Neuroimaging revealed multifocal gadolinium-enhancing masses were located within both sides of the cerebellar hemisphere. Histologically, only small areas showing the typical morphology of hemangioblastoma were recognized in masses. Most areas of masses were composed of cohesive epithelioid tumor cells with abundant cytoplasm and distinct boundaries. Epithelioid tumor cells were arranged around blood vessels, exhibiting perivascular anuclear zone structures like ependymoma. The epithelioid tumor cells were diffusely positive for vimentin, CD99, neuron-specific enolase, GFAP and focally positive for epithelial membrane antigen (EMA) and D2-40 in a dot-like pattern. Variable-sized lipid droplets and glycogen particles were noted in the cytoplasm of epithelioid tumor cells under an electron microscope. A diagnosis of epithelioid cellular hemangioblastoma with possible ependymal differentiation (WHO grade I) was made. To our knowledge, only a few cases of hemangioblastoma show epithelioid appearance or EMA immunoreactivity. The present case indicates that the stromal cells of hemangioblastoma might originate from primitive neuroectodermal cells, and they have the capacity to show a distinctive sign of glial or ependymal differentiation.

BACKGROUND: We examined the association of tumor-derived hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) with the clinicopathological features of gliomas and investigated the effect of HGF inhibition on the biological behavior of tumor cells in vitro in order to determine whether HGF is a valuable prognostic predictor for glioma patients. METHODS: Seventy-six cases of glioma were collected. The tumor-derived HGF expression, cell proliferation index (PI) and intratumoral microvessels were evaluated by immunohistochemistry. Correlation between immunostaining and clinicopathological parameters, as well as the follow-up data of patients, was analyzed statistically. U87MG glioma cells were transfected with short interference (si)-RNA for HGF, and the cell viability, migratory ability and chemosensitivity to cisplatin were evaluated in vitro. RESULTS: Both high HGF expression in tumor cells (59.2%, 45/76) and high PI were significantly associated with high-grade glioma and increased microvessels in tumors (P < 0.05). However, only histological grading (P = 0.004) and high-expression of HGF (P = 0.008) emerged as independent prognostic factors for the overall survival of glioma patients. The tumor-derived HGF mRNA and protein expressions were significantly decreased in vitro after transfection of HGF siRNA. HGF siRNA inhibited the cell growth and reduced cell migratory ability. Moreover, HGF siRNA transfection enhanced the chemosensitivity of U87MG glioma cells to cisplatin. CONCLUSION: This study indicated that there was significant correlation among tumor cell-derived HGF, cell proliferation and microvessel proliferation in gliomas. HGF might influence tumor progression by modulating the cell growth, migration and chemoresistance to drugs. Increased expression of HGF may be a valuable predictor for prognostic evaluation of glioma patients.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) characterized by relapsed intestinal inflammation and barrier function disruption is still a great therapeutic challenge. This study aimed to screen probiotics that have the potential to help alleviate IBD and further elucidate their mechanism of action. Caco-2 cell differentiated monolayers and RAW264.7 cells stimulated by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) were used for probiotic screening in vitro, and then the efficacies of the obtained six bacterial strains were evaluated in mice with dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced colitis. The results showed that all of the strains at varying degrees could increase the transepithelial electrical resistance (TEER) value, decrease the influx of FITC-dextran in Caco-2 cell monolayers and attenuate the production of nitric oxide (NO), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) in LPS-stimulated RAW264.7 cells. In vivo experiments indicated that Bifidobacterium bifidum FL-276.1 (FL-276.1) and Bifidobacterium bifidum FL-228.1 (FL-228.1) showed the best efficacies to ameliorate body weight loss, colon shortening, and intestinal barrier disruption. Accordingly, in FL-276.1 and FL-228.1 groups, the genes of zonula occludens-1 (ZO-1), claudin-4, occludin and mucin 2 (Muc2) in mouse colonic tissues were significantly upregulated, while TNF-α, IL-1ß and IL-6 were downregulated. Further results showed that strains FL-276.1 and FL-228.1 could activate the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) in the intestine. Our study showed that the two Bifidobacterium bifidum strains, FL-276.1 and FL-228.1, ameliorated DSS-induced colitis by enhancing the intestinal barrier and anti-inflammation potentially via the AhR pathway.

In this work, a 4'-(4-cynaophenyl)-4,2':6',4-terpyridine supported CuI MOFs photocatalyst (Cu I MOF) was applied to the photocatalytic CO2 reduction for the first time. The micro-structural and physicochemical properties of the Cu I MOF were systematically studied by the powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), Single crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), UV-Vis diffuse spectroscopy (UV-vis DRS), ns-level photoluminescence spectra (ns-level PL), Ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS), and N2 adsorption-desorption test (BET-BJH). Moreover, the in situ diffuse reflectance infrared fourier transform spectroscopy (in situ DRIFTS) was applied to investigate the adsorption and reaction intermediates of photocatalytic CO2 reduction. As a result, Cu I MOF exhibited good performance and outstanding selectivity toward photocatalytic reduction of CO2 to CO under full-spectrum and visible light illumination. Notably, 100% selective photocatalytic conversion of CO2 to CO was achieved. Thus, the study presents the high selectivity and CO2 reduction efficiency of Cu I MOF as a potential family of photocatalysts.

Meningiomas usually present as benign tumors corresponding to WHO grade I. The development of the intraparenchymal chordoid variant of meningiomas with cyst formation in the CNS is extremely rare. We report a case of cystic chordoid meningioma in a middle-aged man occurring in the brain parenchyma of the left temporal region. The tumor exhibited a marked peritumoral cyst, with contrast enhancement on MRI in accordance with type 2 of Zee's classification of cystic meningioma. Histologically, the tumor displays a typical chordoid structure with trabeculae or cords of eosinophilic vaculoated cells in the abundant mucoid matrix. Tumor cells are diffusely positive for epithelial membrane antigen (EMA), vimentin and focally positive for D2-40, but lack immunoreactivity for cytokeratin (CK) and GFAP. MIB-1 labeling is low, focally accounting for 2% of the tumor. A diagnosis of primary intraparenchymal cystic chordoid meningioma (WHO grade II) was made. There was no evidence of tumor recurrence during the postoperative 6-month follow-up period. To our knowledge, there is no report describing the radiological and histological characteristics of cystic chordoid meningioma entirely presenting in the brain parenchyma. In addition, the biological behavior and histological differential diagnoses of this tumor are discussed.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: We aim at the association of macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) with neovascularization and survival of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC), and determine whether MIF is a valuable prognostic predictor for NPC patients. METHODS: One hundred and forty one cases of NPC and 25 normal tissues of nasopharynx were collected. The expression of MIF and interleukin 8 (IL-8) was evaluated in tissues microarray by immunostaining. Intratumoral microvessel density (IMD) in relation to immunostainings and clinicopathological factors were analyzed statistically as well as the follow-up data of patients. RESULTS: High-expression of both MIF (69.5%) and IL-8 (56.0%) were significantly associated with increased microvessels and lymph node metastasis. High-expression of MIF, IL-8 and higher level of IMD were correlated with either patients' overall survival or disease-specific survival in univariate analysis, but only angiogenesis and lymph node status exhibited in relation to survival of patients as independent prognostic factor of NPC by multivariate analysis. In addition, high-expression of MIF and higher level of IMD were closely associated with locoregional failure of NPC patients. CONCLUSIONS: MIF may contribute to lymph node metastasis in NPC by inducing angiogenesis through the way of upregulation of IL-8 expression in an autocrine EBV-independent pathway.

BACKGROUND: Scutellaria baicalensis is a perennial herbaceous plant widely distributed in Oriental areas. Its roots, a commonly used medicinal source, reputedly calm fetuses in pregnant women; however, there is no sufficient evidence to date to assess its safety during pregnancy. This study aims to evaluate the effects of S. baicalensis aqueous extract on embryonic development in ICR mice. METHODS: Aqueous extract of S. baicalensis roots was prepared in accordance with clinical application. Pregnant mice were randomly divided into four groups, i.e., mice treated by gavage with water as negative control, with aqueous extract of 2 (1.8 times of human daily dose), 8 or 32 g/kg/day from gestation day (Gd) 6 to 15 as low-, middle-, and high-dose groups, respectively. The parameters of live and dead fetuses, resorptions, external and skeletal malformed fetuses, maternal body weight, maternal liver, kidneys, and heart weights were evaluated on Gd 18. RESULTS: There was no significant difference in fetal parameters among four groups. Maternal absolute liver and kidneys weights in the high-dose group were significantly higher than those in negative control (p<0.05). Relative liver and kidneys weights in this group were significantly higher than those in any other group (p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Oral administration of aqueous extract of S. baicalensis roots at or below 32 g/kg/day to ICR mice during organogenesis did not cause significant fetal external or skeletal malformations. However, 32 g/kg/day presented potential maternal toxicity.

Appendiceal or cecal endometriosis with intestinal metaplasia is uncommon and may mimic mucinous tumors of the appendix. A 50-year-old woman was found incidentally to have an ileocecal lesion. In the intraoperative histological examination, a diagnosis of neoplasm of the cecum was made predominantly based on mucin extrusion with scattered lining mucinous epithelium. However, postoperative histological diagnosis of the lesion was cecal endometriosis with intestinal metaplasia as determined by thoroughly microscopic inspection and the presence of typical endometrial glands with surrounding endometrial-type stroma. There was no evidence of recurrence and pseudomyxoma peritonei after 1 year of follow-up. Overinterpretation of cytological atypia or mucin extrusion in endometriosis may lead to inappropriate surgical management. Therefore, in any ileocecal or appendiceal lesions with mucinous epithelia and mucin extrusions, removal of sufficient tissue from different portions of the lesion is essential for surgeons and pathologists to make a precise diagnosis in the intraoperative histological examination.

Mixed epithelial and stromal tumor of kidney (MESTK) is a rare but distinct renal complex neoplasm composed of a mixture of mesenchymal and epithelial elements with characteristic ovarian-type stroma. Due to its relative rarity, little is known about the histogenesis and prognostic factors of this tumor. Although most reported cases display bland histological features and benign clinical course, a few cases of malignant MESTK have been described. We report an unusual case of MESTK in a 50-year-old female patient with renal venous involvement. Macroscopically, the tumor was solid and unencapsulated in the central region of left kidney. There was a polypoid mass with slender pedicle found to extend into the renal vein forming an intravenous tumor thrombus. Histologically, both renal and intravenous mass were composed of bland spindle-shaped cells and round dilated tubules lined by epithelium without any cytological atypia. The spindle cells were diffusely positive for smooth muscle actin and desmin, while tubules were positive for pan-cytokeratin (AE1/AE3). A diagnosis of MESTK with renal vein extension was made. The patient received no adjuvant treatment after radical nephrectomy. There was no sign of recurrence or metastasis of tumor found in a period of 16-month regular follow-up. To our knowledge, this is the first case of MESTK with renal vein extension, but lacking malignant histological appearance. Additional studies of MESTK with vein involvement will be needed to determine whether this imparts any adverse behavior, similar to other benign renal tumors with vascular involvement.
