RESUMEN

Transmission of sub-terahertz (sub-THz) signals over a fiber-free-space optical (FSO)-fifth-generation (5 G) new radio (NR) hybrid system is successfully realized. It is a promising system that utilizes multiple media of optical fiber, optical wireless, and 5 G NR wireless to achieve a 227.912-Gb/s record-high aggregate net bit rate. The system concurrently transmits a 59.813-Gb/s net bit rate in the 150-GHz sub-THz frequency, 74.766-Gb/s in the 250-GHz sub-THz frequency, and 93.333-Gb/s in the 325-GHz sub-THz frequency through the fiber-FSO-wireless convergence, including 25-km single-mode fiber, 100-m FSO, and 30-m/25-m/20-m sub-THz-wave transmissions. This system achieves sufficiently low bit error rates (< hard-decision forward error correction (FEC) threshold of 3.8 × 10-3 at 16 and 20 Gbaud symbol rates; < soft-decision FEC threshold of 2 × 10-2 at 28 Gbaud symbol rate) and clear and distinct constellation diagrams, meeting the demands of 5 G NR communications in the sub-THz band. The development of fiber-FSO-5 G NR hybrid system represents a substantial development in the field of advanced communications. It has the ability to enhance the way we communicate in the future.

RESUMEN

An 800 Gb/s/200 m free-space optical (FSO) link with a wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM)-four-level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM4) scheme and spatial light modulator (SLM)-based beam tracking technology is constructed. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first one that adopts a WDM-PAM4 scheme and an SLM-based beam tracking technology to simultaneously afford a high transmission capacity of 800 Gb/s and resolve the laser beam misalignment problem due to target device movement. By adopting a 16-wavelength WDM-PAM4 scheme, the transmission capacity of the FSO link is considerably enhanced with an 800 Gb/s (50Gb/sPAM4/λ×16λ) total capacity. By deploying an SLM-based beam tracking technology, the laser beam misalignment problem is practically resolved for providing an FSO link with high link accessibility. This demonstrated WDM-PAM4 FSO link fully meets the requirements of high-speed, long-reach, and high-reliability transmissions.

RESUMEN

A white-lighting and wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM)-visible light communication (VLC) system with over 20 m of free-space distance and 3 m of lighting distance is demonstrated via a red/green/blue (R/G/B) triple-source polarization-multiplexing scheme, transmission gratings, and an engineered diffuser with a double-convex lens. Integrating four-level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM4) with a triple-source polarization-multiplexing scheme, the aggregate transmission rate is noticeably enhanced to 300 Gb/s [50Gb/sPAM4/source×3sources×2polarizations (p- and s-polarizations)]. White-light is produced by multiplexing the R/G/B lights with two transmission gratings and separated by demultiplexing them using the other two transmission gratings. By adopting an engineered diffuser with a double-convex lens, the white-light is diffused over 3 m of free-space distance to provide general white-light illumination (>100lux). This demonstrated white-lighting and WDM-VLC system meets a high aggregate transmission rate with a qualified indoor lighting target. It opens up a new category for lighting and communication.

RESUMEN

A two-ring-based radio over fiber (RoF) transport system with a two-step fiber link failure detection and self-healing algorithm is proposed to ensure quality of service (QoS) by automatically monitoring the health of each fiber link in the transport system and by resourcefully detecting, locating, and bypassing the blocked fiber links. With the assistance of the fiber Bragg grating remote sensing technique, preinstalled optical switches, and novel single-line bidirectional optical add/drop multiplexers, the optical routing pathways in the RoF transport system can be dynamically adjusted by the proposed algorithm when some fiber links are broken. Simulation results show that except in some extreme situations, the proposed algorithm can find the blocked fiber links in the RoF transport system and animatedly adjust the status of preinstalled optical switches to restore all blocked network connections, thereby ensuring QoS in the proposed RoF transport system.

RESUMEN

A 16 Gb/s four-level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM4) underwater wireless optical communication (UWOC) system based on 488-nm laser diode (LD) with light injection and optoelectronic feedback techniques is proposed and successfully demonstrated. Experimental results show that such a 1.8-GHz 488-nm blue light LD with light injection and optoelectronic feedback techniques is enough forceful for a 16 Gb/s PAM4 signal underwater link. To the authors' knowledge, this study is the first to successfully adopt a 488-nm LD transmitter with light injection and optoelectronic feedback techniques in a PAM4 UWOC system. By adopting a 488-nm LD transmitter with light injection and optoelectronic feedback techniques, good bit error rate performance (offline processed by Matlab) and clear eye diagrams (measured in real-time) are achieved over a 10-m underwater link. The proposed system has the potential to play a vital role in the future UWOC infrastructure by effectively providing high transmission rate (16 Gb/s) and long underwater transmission distance (10 m).

RESUMEN

A 150 m/280 Gbps free-space optical (FSO) link based on an optoelectronic oscillator (OEO)-based broadband light source (BLS), afocal telescopes, and wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM)/space-division-multiplexing (SDM) convergence is proposed. Experimental results show that the transmission distance of FSO links is significantly increased by afocal telescopes, and the transmission rate of FSO links is greatly enhanced by WDM and SDM convergence. With the aid of a low noise amplifier and clock/data recovery, good bit error rate performance and a clear eye diagram are achieved at 150 m/280 Gbps operation. This proposed 150 m/280 Gbps WDM/SDM FSO link is shown to be a prominent alternative not only because of its advancement of indoor FSO communications but also because of the advantages of optical wireless communications for a long transmission distance and high transmission rate.

RESUMEN

A two-way 224-Gbit/s four-level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM4)-based fibre-free-space optical (FSO) converged system through a 25-km single-mode fibre (SMF) transport with 500-m free-space transmission is successfully constructed, which adopts injection-locked vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers with polarisation-multiplexing mechanism for a demonstration. Compared with one-way transmission, two-way transmission is an attractive architecture for fibre-FSO converged system. Two-way transmission over SMF transport with free-space transmission not only reduces the required number of fibres and the setups of free-space transmission, but also provides the advantage of capacity doubling. Incorporating dual-wavelength four-level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM4) modulation with polarisation-multiplexing mechanism, the transmission capacity of fibre-FSO converged system is significantly enhanced to 224 Gbit/s (56 Gbit/s PAM4/wavelength × 2-wavelength × 2-polarisation) for downlink/uplink transmission. Bit error rate and PAM4 eye diagrams (downstream/upstream) perform well over 25-km SMF transport with 500-m free-space transmission. This proposed two-way fibre-FSO converged system is a prominent one not only because of its development in the integration of fibre backbone with optical wireless extension, but also because of its advantage in two-way transmission for affording high downlink/uplink data rate with good transmission performance.

RESUMEN

A bidirectional lightwave transport system employing direct modulation CATV and phase remodulation radio-over-fiber (ROF) signals in two-way transmission is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. To be the first system of reusing the phase of the transmitting lightwave with multi-carrier analog CATV signal, the transmission performances of CATV and ROF signals are investigated in bidirectional way, with the help of optical band-pass filters (OBPFs) at the receiving sites. Through a serious investigation, the transmitting light sources are successfully remodulated with RF signals for transmission. Brilliant transmission performances of composite second-order (CSO), composite triple-beat (CTB), and bit error rate (BER) were obtained; accompanied with acceptable carrier-to-noise ratio (CNR) value. This proposed system reveals a prominent one with economy and convenience to be installed.

RESUMEN

A polarization-division-multiplexing (PDM)-based bi-directional fibre-free-space optical (FSO) integration with two reflective semiconductor optical amplifiers (RSOAs) scheme to efficiently wipe off the modulated data for upstream modulation is proposed and successfully demonstrated. For downstream modulation, a high-speed 128 Gb/s vestigial sideband (VSB)-four-level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM4) fibre-FSO integration is feasibly established. The transmission capacity is increased up to four times through PDM operation and VSB-PAM4 modulation. For uplink transmission, a 10 Gb/s non-return-to-zero fibre-FSO integration with two RSOAs scheme to effectually erase the downstream modulated data is practically constructed. The upstream performance exhibits noticeable enhancement by using of two RSOAs scheme to wipe off the modulated data clearly. Such illustrated PDM-based bi-directional 128 Gb/s (downstream)/10 Gb/s (upstream) fibre-FSO integration is shown to be prominent not only due to its enhancement in the convergence of fibre backhaul and optical wireless reach extender but also because of its benefit in bi-directional transmission for affording high transmission capacity with long-reach optical wireless link and improved upstream performance.

RESUMEN

We have, so far as we know, proposed and demonstrated the first 30 Gb/s four-level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM4) underwater wireless laser transmission (UWLT) system with an optical beam reducer/expander over 12.5-m piped underwater channel/2.5-m high-turbidity harbour underwater channel. In piped underwater links, the performances of PAM4 UWLT systems get better with beam reduction given a small amount of light absorbed by the piped water. In highly turbid harbour underwater links, the performances of PAM4 UWLT systems get better with beam expansion given a large amount of scattered light received by the optical receiver. The effect of high-turbidity harbour water that induces scattering angle (beam divergence) on beam diameter is analyzed and optimised to enhance the transmission performances. This proposed PAM4 UWLT system, which uses an optical beam reducer/expander, provides a practical choice for high transmission capacity and considerably develops clarity and high-turbidity scenarios. It presents promising features for affording a high-transmission-rate underwater optical wireless transmission and opening an access to accelerate wide applications of UWLT systems.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The control of tuberculosis in densely populated cities is complicated by close human-to-human contacts and potential transmission of pathogens from multiple sources. We conducted a molecular epidemiologic analysis of 356 Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) isolates from patients presenting pulmonary tuberculosis in metropolitan Taipei. Classical antibiogram studies and genetic characterization, using mycobacterial interspersed repetitive-unit-variable-number tandem-repeat (MIRU-VNTR) typing and spoligotyping, were applied after culture. METHODS: A total of 356 isolates were genotyped by standard spoligotyping and the strains were compared with in the international spoligotyping database (SpolDB4). All isolates were also categorized using the 15 loci MIRU-VNTR typing method and combin with NTF locus and RD deletion analyses. RESULTS: Of 356 isolates spoligotyped, 290 (81.4%) displayed known spoligotypes and 66 were not identified in the database. Major spoligotypes found were Beijing lineages (52.5%), followed by Haarlem lineages (13.5%) and EAI plus EAI-like lineages (11%). When MIRU-VNTR was employed, 140 patterns were identified, including 36 clusters by 252 isolates and 104 unique patterns, and the largest cluster comprised 95 isolates from the Beijing family. The combination of spoligotyping and MIRU-VNTR revealed that 236 (67%) of the 356 isolates were clustered in 43 genotypes. Strains of the Beijing family was more likely to be of modern strain and a higher percentage of multiple drug resistance than other families combined (P = 0.08). Patients infected with Beijing strains were younger than those with other strains (mean 58.7 vs. 64.2, p = 0.02). Moreover, 85.3% of infected persons younger than 25 years had Beijing modern strain, suggesting a possible recent spread in the young population by this family of TB strain in Taipei. CONCLUSION: Our data on MTB genotype in Taipei suggest that MTB infection has not been optimally controlled. Control efforts should be reinforced in view of the high prevalence of the Beijing strain in young population and association with drug resistance.
