RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: In response to the growing demand for community nursing, practical and dynamic changes in educational methods are essential to nurturing competent nurses. The aim of this study was to explore the learning experiences of nursing students' simulation-based community visits and understand these experiences in detail. METHODS: This study followed Colizzi's phenomenological research method. Nineteen participants were divided into three teams and participated in focus group interviews. The research question was: "How was your experience with the simulated nursing home visit?" RESULTS: Four essential themes were identified: "burden of community nursing simulation-based learning," "solving the problems faced by patients with dementia through teamwork," "home-visiting nursing skills learned through physical practice," and "community nursing competency growth." CONCLUSION: The study results provide a basis for developing a community nursing curriculum with effective evaluation and management of community nursing home-visit education using simulation.

RESUMEN

AIM: This cross-sectional study aimed to investigate the factors that affected the mental health of Korean nurses caring for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients, causing posttraumatic stress disorder, depression, anxiety, and sleep disorders. BACKGROUND: Infectious disease outbreaks like COVID-19 affect the mental health not only of those who contract the disease but also of nurses caring for affected patients. INTRODUCTION: To address health issues effectively, it is essential to comprehend how to prevent them. Therefore, it is necessary to scrutinize the origins of COVID-19-related health concerns and devise measures to prevent potential problems. METHOD: We used an online survey to collect data from 136 nurses caring for COVID-19 patients during the initial stage of the pandemic. The data were analyzed using the one-way analysis of variance and a simple logistic regression. RESULTS: The findings confirmed a high prevalence of posttraumatic stress disorder among nurses, with symptoms of depression, anxiety, and sleep problems. DISCUSSION: Our research has shown that it is important not to exacerbate the difficulties that nurses face after their activities. Therefore, it proposes for creating environmental structures that mitigate predictable challenges such as workload from various tasks, sleep disturbances, and hopelessness, rather than focusing on personal vulnerabilities. CONCLUSION: Timely attention to influencing factors can reduce the risk to nurses' mental health, so we need to plan preventive measures that reflect the influencing factors to prepare for future pandemics. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING AND HEALTH POLICY: Continuous monitoring of the mental health status of nurses responding to a global health crisis and the development of appropriate psychological support programs and policies for creating a conducive work environment are necessary.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to investigate the effect of depression on suicidal behavior among older adults and identify the mediating effect of life satisfaction on the relationship between depression and suicidal behavior. The moderated mediating effects of social support through life satisfaction were also verified in the relationship between depression and suicidal behavior among older adults. METHODS: A total of 1375 people aged 65 years or older living in J city, South Korea, were recruited to complete a survey on depression, life satisfaction, suicidal behavior, and social support. Data were analyzed using SPSS24.0 and SPSS PROCESS Macro. RESULTS: The results showed that the effect of depression on suicidal behavior was mediated by life satisfaction, and the effect of life satisfaction on suicidal behavior varied according to the level of social support. Moreover, depression negatively affected life satisfaction, increasing the risk of suicidal behavior, and social support decreased suicidal behavior. Finally, the mediating effect of depression leading to suicidal behavior through life satisfaction was moderated by social support. CONCLUSIONS: These findings suggest that it is necessary not only to find interventions for older adults to increase their physical, mental, and socioeconomical satisfaction with life, but also to build social networks that increase social support for them.

RESUMEN

With the growing demand for health education, enhancing nurses' ability to deliver such education is vital. This phenomenological qualitative study, employing convenience sampling, investigates pre-service nurses' experiences in simulated health education classes. The study included 32 fourth-year pre-service nurses from the Department of Nursing at a South Korean university. Between April 20 and June 30, 2022, these participants documented their perceptions of the simulated classes in self-reflection journals. The researcher utilized the phenomenological research method as proposed by Colaizzi (1978) to analyze the data. The findings suggest that simulated health education classes offer an opportunity to bolster pre-service nurses' practical knowledge, fostering their growth as nursing educators. The pre-service nurses reported gaining confidence in their roles as educators and enhancing their professionalism through these simulated classes. Therefore, as public health promotion becomes increasingly crucial and the demand for health education rises, simulated health education classes serve as a valuable adjunct to teaching methods in health education.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Nursing is encountering increasingly complex and unpredictable challenges, and traditional lecture-style education is inadequate for preparing future nurses to meet these societal demands. In nursing, it is important to expand the variety of student-centered educational methods that empower students to build and contemplate their own knowledge. The Havruta educational method is recognized for its effectiveness in fostering critical thinking and promoting self-directed learning skills. OBJECTIVES: This study aims to elucidate the nature and significance of experiences among nursing students who engage in community nursing classes through the Havruta learning approach. DESIGN: Qualitative research. SETTINGS: Nursing universities in Korea. PARTICIPANTS: This study was conducted on 68 nursing students who participated in the Havruta learning method. METHOD: A total of 68 third-year students enrolled in community nursing courses in the second semester of 2022 at a university participated in this qualitative study. Data were collected through the analysis of reflection journals. RESULTS: The study identified four overarching themes and 10 sub-themes relating to the application of the Havruta learning method in community nursing classes. The primary themes included: "how to increase motivation to participate in classes," "learning through communication," "Gaining insight through problem-solving," and "Regrets about the lack of time." CONCLUSIONS: The findings suggest that the Havruta learning approach allows students to broaden their intellectual scope and perspective on a more comprehensive body of knowledge. This is achieved through interactive methods that encourage self-organization and reflective thinking.

RESUMEN

This study was conducted to develop a substantive theory on school nurses' experiences responding to infectious diseases by applying the grounded theory method to explore their experiences and derive related concepts. Study participants were 20 school nurses with experiences coping with infectious diseases while working in schools. The research question of this study was "What kind of experience did the school nurses have in response to infectious diseases?" The analysis included open, axis, and selective coding. We derived 164 concepts, 45 subcategories, and 17 categories. Further, paradigm, situation, and school infectious disease response control tower models were derived. The results of this study can serve as bottom-up policy data to understand the current situation surrounding school infectious disease management through the experiences of school nurses.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Simulation-based learning is an educational method in community nursing to train the skills required to interact with a variety of patients in the community. OBJECTIVES: This study examined the effects of simulation-based learning on home-visit nursing for older people with dementia by evaluating nursing students' communication skills, self-efficacy, and critical thinking propensity. DESIGN: This is a quasi-experimental study using a single-group pretest-posttest design. PARTICIPANTS: Participants were 69 fourth-year students of the Department of Nursing at a university in K city, South Korea. METHOD: Data were collected from October 25 to November 10, 2021 at the beginning and after classes using a questionnaire on students' communication skills, self-efficacy, and critical thinking propensity. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, paired t-tests, and Pearson's correlation coefficients using SPSS WIN 26.0. RESULTS: Nursing students' communication skills, self-efficacy, and critical thinking propensity showed a significant improvement after education when compared with before teaching. There was a positive relationship between communication skills and self-efficacy, communication skills and critical thinking propensity, and self-efficacy and critical thinking propensity. CONCLUSION: This study confirmed that providing simulation education similar to that delivered in community nursing can improve nursing students' communication skills, self-efficacy, and critical thinking propensity. The results of this study can be used as primary data for efficiently conducting education using nursing visit simulations for dementia patients.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The social crises induced by the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic have had adverse effects on the global healthcare system. Public healthcare centers have restructured their services to address clinical needs at the forefront of the pandemic. This led to nursing students immersing themselves in clinical experience while practicing at public healthcare centers during the COVID-19 pandemic. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to explore and understand the experiences of nursing students practicing in public healthcare centers in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. DESIGN: A qualitative study. SETTING: A public healthcare center in Korea. PARTICIPANTS: Twenty third-year nursing students from a university in Korea. METHODS: A qualitative study design was used where students provided reflections on their experience in clinical practice at public healthcare centers. Data were collected between November 5 and December 17, 2021. Data were analyzed using the phenomenological approach proposed by Colaizzi. RESULTS: Three categories emerged. Students immersed themselves in a practicum experience in public healthcare in response to COVID-19. Students recognized the challenges associated with providing healthcare services during the pandemic. The students expanded their field of interest to community nursing. CONCLUSION: In the context of COVID-19, supplementing academic education and training for nursing students with experience in clinical practice at public healthcare centers enhanced the capabilities of future nurses. It increased confidence in their work and responsibilities.

RESUMEN

In this study, we aimed to analyze the demographic factors, socioeconomic factors, health behavior factors, and health education of urban and rural adolescents and their impact on obesity in rural and urban youths. We analyzed data from 60,040 students from 800 schools using the 14th Youth Health Behavior Web-based Survey data for 2018. The mean age of the participants was 15.01 ± 1.77; 30,463 (50.7%) males and 29,577 (49.3%) females. The data were analyzed using a chi-square test and multinominal logistic regression analysis. Rural adolescents had significantly lower parental income, parental education, and academic performance levels. Urban adolescents tended to have a higher rate of breakfast fasting, ate more fast-food, exercised less, had a higher rate of sleep dissatisfaction, and had significantly higher current alcohol intake. Rural adolescents reported more stress and obesity levels than their urban counterparts. Factors influencing the obesity of urban adolescents were grade level, father's education, mother's education, academic performance level, fast-food, exercise, current alcohol intake, and sleep satisfaction. Factors influencing the obesity of rural adolescents were parents' income level, academic performance level, exercise, and sleep satisfaction. To effectively prevent and manage adolescent obesity, which is an indicator of health equity among adolescents, an effort must be made to improve health education and the local environment in both urban and rural areas.

RESUMEN

This study examined the moderating and mediating effects of ego-resilience, parenting behaviour, and peer attachment on the relationship between smartphone dependency and aggression. Participants included 1863 middle school youths who used smartphones and had responded to the 7th Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey (KCYPS), which was conducted by Korea's National Youth Policy Institute. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics, correlation, and hierarchical regression analyses. First, ego-resilience showed a partial mediating effect on the relationship between smartphone dependency and aggression (significant moderating effects were revealed). Second, parenting behaviour demonstrated a partial mediating effect on the relationship between smartphone dependency and aggression (no moderating effects observed). Third, peer attachment had a partial mediating effect on the relationship between smartphone dependency and aggression (no moderating effects were observed). These findings suggest that mental health and student growth can be improved as children develop by implementing various nursing and health care programs designed to improve ego-resilience, parenting behaviour, and peer attachment.
