RESUMEN

Transition metal substitution is a key strategy to optimize the functional properties of advanced crystalline materials used as positive electrodes in secondary lithium batteries (LIBs). Here we investigate the structural alterations in the olivine lattice of Mn and Ni substituted LiCoPO4 phase and the impact on performance in LIBs. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and extended X-ray absorption experiments have been carried out in order to highlight the structural alterations induced by partial substitution of cobalt by manganese and nickel. XRD analysis suggests that substitution induces an expansion of the lattices and an increase of the antisite disorder between lithium and transition metal ions in the structure. XAS data highlight negligible electronic disorder but a relevant modulation in the local coordination around the different metal ions. Moreover, galvanostatic tests showed poor reversibility of the redox reaction compared to the pure LCP sample, and this failure is discussed in detail in view of the observed remarkable structural changes.

RESUMEN

In this work the results deriving from the characterization of materials used by Lucio Fontana to realize some of his artworks are presented. Specifically, object of analyses are three artworks from the collection of National Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art in Rome, whose complex composition required the combination of different diagnostic techniques for a complete characterization. Microscopic fragments from the artworks were analyzed through X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF), Fourier Transformed InfraRed (FTIR) spectroscopy, in transmission and in Attenuated Total Reflectance (ATR) mode, and Raman spectroscopy to obtain information on the atomic and molecular species and to individuate pigments and binders. In one case, the richness in different materials and the not homogenous distribution on the artwork surface required the additional use of portable techniques, as Visible Light Reflectance and Raman spectroscopies with optical fiber probes, to map the surface. The combination of these techniques resulted to be a powerful tool in order to obtain a complete characterization of artist's choices and provided new information to understand the evolution of his technique.

Cellulose-based hydrogels, obtained by tuned, low-cost synthetic routes, are proposed as convenient gel electrolyte membranes. Hydrogels have been prepared from different types of cellulose by optimized solubilization and crosslinking steps. The obtained gel membranes have been characterized by infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and mechanical tests in order to investigate the crosslinking occurrence and modifications of cellulose resulting from the synthetic process, morphology of the hydrogels, their thermal stability, and viscoelastic-extensional properties, respectively. Hydrogels liquid uptake capability and ionic conductivity, derived from absorption of aqueous electrolytic solutions, have been evaluated, to assess the successful applicability of the proposed membranes as gel electrolytes for electrochemical devices. To this purpose, the redox behavior of electroactive species entrapped into the hydrogels has been investigated by cyclic voltammetry tests, revealing very high reversibility and ion diffusivity.
