To explore the general clinical features and treatment outcomes of patients with AIDS-related diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (AIDS-DLBCL) and provide a theoretical basis for diagnosis and treatment, survival prognosis, prevention and management of AIDS-DLBCL patients. AIDS-DLBCL patients who received combined antiretroviral therapy (cART) at Changsha First Hospital from January 2017 to January 2020 were selected in this study. The survival curves were plotted using the Kaplan-Meier method, and the Cox proportional hazards regression model was used to analyze the association between AIDS-DLBCL specific variables and progression-free survival and overall survival. Correlation analysis was conducted based on the clinical features of the patients. A total of 50 AIDS-DLBCL patients were included. Their median age (Q1, Q3) was 52 (44, 59) years, of whom 46 (92%) were male. About 20 (40%) patients received treatment with cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine, and prednisone (CHOP), while 23 patients (46%) received treatment with rituximab combined with cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine, and prednisone (RCHOP). Survival curve analysis showed that the 2-year progression-free survival rate and overall survival rate of AIDS-DLBCL patients were 56.9% and 61.6%, respectively. Patients with RCHOP protocol combined with EBV-DNA≥1 000 copies/ml had higher progression-free survival rate (χ2=3.844, P=0.043) and overall survival rate (χ2=4.662, P=0.031) than those with CHOP protocol combined with EBV-DNA≥1 000 copies/ml. A multivariate analysis showed that male (HR=2.70, 95%CI:1.10-6.80), EB viral load≥1 000 copies/ml (HR=1.75, 95%CI:1.12-2.84), HIV-RNA≥200 copies/ml (HR=4.64, 95%CI: 1.73-12.15), ECOG PS score of 2 to 4 points (HR=3.54, 95%CI:1.62-7.33), and international prognostic index (IPI) score of 3 to 5 points (HR=5.21, 95%CI:1.39-20.14) were at a higher risk of disease progression. Patients with EB viral load≥1 000 copies/ml (HR=0.07, 95%CI:0.05-0.93) on the RCHOP regimen had a small risk of disease progression. Males (HR=2.87, 95%CI:1.65-9.17), EB viral load≥1 000 copies/ml (HR=1.61, 95%CI:4.02-9.36), HIV-RNA≥200 copies/ml (HR=1.19, 95%CI:1.58-2.74), ECOG PS score of 2 to 4 (HR=6.42, 95%CI:2.55-14.33), IPI score of 3 to 5 points (HR=2.78, 95%CI:1.41-12.96) had a high risk of mortality. Patients with EB viral load≥1 000 copies/ml (HR=0.24, 95%CI:0.64-0.90) on the RCHOP regimen had a low risk of mortality. In summary, males, ECOG physical status score of 2 to 4 points, IPI score of 3 to 5 points, EB viral load≥1 000 copies/ml and HIV viral load≥200 copies/ml are risk factors affecting progression-free survival and overall survival of AIDS-DLBCL patients. RCHOP regimen combined with EB viral load≥1 000 copies/ml is a protective factor affecting progression-free survival and overall survival in AIDS-DLBCL patients.

Phage therapy is one of the most important tools for the treatment of infections with multi-drug resistant bacteria. Such phages are usually isolated from hospital effluents, however, no systematic study on the distribution of phages in hospital effluents has been conducted so far. The aim of this study was to isolate the corresponding phages of common pathogenic bacteria isolated in the clinic as hosts, so as to assess the ecological distribution of phages in hospital wastewater and to provide a reference for the isolation and application of phages of drug-resistant bacteria in the clinic. A cross-sectional study design was used in this study. The 125 pathogenic bacteria (belonging to 16 different strains) isolated from the clinical microbiology laboratory of Qilu Hospital of Shandong University from May to June 2023 were selected as the target strains, and the phages corresponding to these strains were isolated and purified from the hospital wastewater by using the double-layer plate sandwich method. At the same time, the distribution of pathogenic bacteria in the same batch of wastewater was analyzed with the help of mNGS sequencing technology, so as to preliminarily investigate the abundance correspondence between pathogenic bacteria and phages in wastewater. The results showed that a total of 56 phage strains were isolated from 125 clinical pathogens as hosts, corresponding to six pathogens, including Acinetobacter baumannii, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Stenotrophomonas maltophilia. All six pathogenic bacteria contained strains with different degrees of drug resistance, with a higher percentage of multi-drug resistant strains in A. baumannii, Escherichia coli and P. aeruginosa. The phage acquisition rates of these six pathogens were, in descending order, Escherichia coli (80%), Stenotrophomonas maltophilia (75%), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (70%), Klebsiella pneumoniae (66.67%), Acinetobacter baumannii (36.36%) and Staphylococcus aureus (12.5%). Preliminary mNGS sequencing results showed that the pathogenic bacteria with higher abundance in the batch of effluent were Enterococcus faecalis, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Escherichia coli, Enterococcus faecalis, Acinetobacter baumannii, Klebsiella aerogenes, Klebsiella michiganensis and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. In conclusion, phages of most common clinical Gram-negative pathogens were isolated from hospital wastewater with high isolation rates; however, phages of Gram-positive pathogens were isolated at lower rates, and only phages corresponding to Staphylococcus aureus were isolated in this study. The corresponding mNGS sequencing results showed that the distribution of Gram-negative pathogens in sewage may had a positive correlation with the ecological distribution of phages.

Thromboembolism is a crucial part of the global disease burden. It has high incidence, high mortality and disability rates, and the mechanism of occurrence and development is extremely complex. It is difficult to detect the disease in the early stage so that we have trouble with clinical prevention and treatment in general. At present, four items of blood coagulation and D-dimer have been widely used in the evaluation and auxiliary diagnosis of thromboembolism, the monitoring of effect for antithrombotic drugs and other fields. The thrombus biomarkers including thrombin-antithrombin complex (TAT), thrombomodulin (TM), tissue plasminogen activator-inhibitor complex (t-PAIC) and α2-plasmin inhibitor-plasmin complex (PIC) fill the gap of laboratory diagnosis before clinical symptoms appear in some degree. This article aims to explain the current application status of TAT, TM, t-PAIC and PIC in thromboembolism and explore their potential application value, so as to provide a reference for selecting appropriate early monitoring indicators for high-risk population of thromboembolism.

AIM: To analyse the effects of the alternatively spliced fibronectin (FN) gene and its isoforms on osteoclastogenesis in radicular cysts. METHODOLOGY: Specimens of radicular cysts were collected surgically from 22 patients whose radiolucent periapical areas were measured on digital panoramic radiographs before surgery. The associations between the radiolucent areas and FN isoforms, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) expression or micro-vessel density, as well as the relationships amongst them, were analysed by immunohistochemical staining using the antibodies IST-9, BC-1, P1F11, VEGF and CD34. Fibroblasts isolated from those specimens were used to induce Trap + MNCs, and the effects of induction were assessed by blocking FN containing extra domain A (EDA + FN), COX-2 or VEGF in vitro. The effects of EDA exon knockout using CRISPR/Cas system were also assessed. Quantitative PCR was used to analyse relative expression of FN isoforms and osteoclastogenic genes. Data were analysed using linear regression, Spearman's rank correlation analysis, chi-square test and Student's t-test; P < 0.05 was considered significant. RESULTS: Micro-vessel density and EDA + FN staining were positively associated with the size of radiolucent periapical areas (mm2 ; P < 0.05), consistent with a positive association between Trap + MNCs and VEGF expression in fibroblasts (P < 0.05). Blocking the interaction between EDA + FN and fibroblasts inhibited Trap + MNC formation. In addition, EDA exon knockout decreased VEGF expression and inhibited Trap + MNC formation to the extent of blocking VEGF by bevacizumab, but osteoclastogenic induction was restored by recombinant VEGF. Using retrospective clinicopathological data, VEGF staining was shown to be positively associated with EDA + FN staining, micro-vessel density and the size of radiolucent areas (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: In fibrous capsules of radicular cysts, the alternatively spliced isoform EDA + FN generated by fibroblasts stimulated VEGF expression via an autocrine effect and then facilitated osteoclastogenesis. Both blockage of VEGF and EDA exon knockout could be used to inhibit bone destruction.

Objective: To evaluate the clinical outcomes of on-pump total arterial revascularization with bilateral radial artery (BRA) and left internal mammary artery (LIMA) as conduits in coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) patients with left ventricular dysfunction (LVD). Methods: All the perioperative medical records and follow-up results of coronary artery disease patients with left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) ≤ 40% undergoing CABG from 24 heart centers of 15 provinces and autonomous regions in China between July 2015 and December 2019 were retrospectively analyzed. Results: A total of 87 consecutive patients (55 males and 32 females) underwent on-pump CABG with BRA and LIMA, with a mean age of (57.5±9.1) years old. There were 22 patients complicated with primary hypertension, 12 with diabetes mellitus, 8 with peripheral vascular disease, 7 with chronic obstructive lung disease, 12 with mild renal injury and 3 with partial aortic calcification. There were 43 cases with in-stent stenosis, and 21 had left main disease. The mean LVEF and left ventricular end-diastolic diameter (LVEDD) was (35.5±7.3)% and (65.5±2.6) mm, respectively. The mean graft number, aortic cross-clamp time and cardiopulmonary bypass duration was 3.2±0.9, (90.5±22.7) min and (113.4±19.2) min, respectively. There were 32 mitral and 9 aortic valve replacements, and 5 tricuspid annuloplasties. Prophylactic intra-aortic balloon pumps were implanted in 27 patients. There were 2 operative deaths from acute heart failure. After surgery, there were 15 cases of atrial fibrillation, 1 case of acute kidney injury, 1 case of acute myocardial infarction, and 1 cases of stroke. All the patients fulfilled the follow-up, with a mean time of (39.5±7.7) months. At 3 months after surgery, LVEDD was decreased and LVEF was improved significantly compared with pre-operative indicators [(53.0±1.5) mm vs (65.5±2.6) mm, t=9.51 P=0.02; (45.2±3.3)% vs (35.5±7.3)%, t=13.79, P=0.001]. No major cardiac events were reported during the follow-up. At (30.5±7.4) months after surgery, 62.4% of patients (53/85) underwent coronary CT angiography examination, and the results indicated that the graft patency was 98.8%, with only one case of RA occlusion occurred. Conclusion: In selected patients of LVD, on-pump total arterial revascularization with BRA and LIMA conduits was proved to be safe and effective.

This study aimed to determine if short-term nutrient alteration affects (1) ovarian morphology, (2) plasma and ovarian antioxidant capability and (3) cell apoptosis and AKT signaling within the ovary. After estrus synchronization, 24 Hu sheep were assigned to three groups based on the nutrient requirement recommended for maintenance (M): 1 × M (Control), 1.5 × M (S) and 0.5 × M (R) during days 7-14 of their estrous cycle. The results indicated that undernourishment significantly increased the counts and volume of follicles <2.5 mm and decreased the counts and volume of follicles ≥2.5 mm (P < 0.05). Feed restriction altered the plasma and follicular redox balance within follicles ≥2.5 mm by inhibiting total antioxidant capacity, increasing malondialdehyde concentration (P < 0.05) and reducing the mRNA expression levels of superoxide dismutase 2 (SOD2) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-PX), as well as the activities of total SOD and GSH-PX. Feed restriction also attenuated B-cell lymphoma-2 (BCL2) but enhanced Bcl-2-associated X protein (BAX) and BAX/BCL2 transcription and translation levels in granulosa cells (P < 0.05). Uniform staining intensities of AKT and P-AKT-Ser473 were observed in each follicle stage, whereas weaker P-AKT-Thr308 staining in the antral follicle than in the pre-antral follicle suggested possible involvement of P-AKT-Thr308 during the beginning of follicle development. P-AKT-Ser473 levels in follicles ≥2.5 mm was significantly reduced in the R group (P < 0.05). The results presented in this study demonstrate that suppressed folliculogenesis caused by feed restriction might be associated with attenuated AKT signaling, reduced follicular antioxidant capacity and enhanced granulosa cells apoptosis.

RESUMEN

Nonlinear effects of photo-induced waveguides based on isomerization photochemistry are investigated. It is found that polarization information of the controlling light can be used to control the propagation of the signal light in all-optical waveguides, and an accurate and convenient light-controlling-light scheme is proposed, that is, controlling propagation of the signal light by synergic use of the intensity information and polarization information of the controlling light. The polarization dependence of optical nonlinearity is expected to enrich the connotation of the optical nonlinear effects and has theoretical significance and practical value.

Non-mammalian vertebrates have an intrinsically photosensitive iris and thus a local pupillary light reflex (PLR). In contrast, it is thought that the PLR in mammals generally requires neuronal circuitry connecting the eye and the brain. Here we report that an intrinsic component of the PLR is in fact widespread in nocturnal and crepuscular mammals. In mouse, this intrinsic PLR requires the visual pigment melanopsin; it also requires PLCß4, a vertebrate homologue of the Drosophila NorpA phospholipase C which mediates rhabdomeric phototransduction. The Plcb4(-/-) genotype, in addition to removing the intrinsic PLR, also essentially eliminates the intrinsic light response of the M1 subtype of melanopsin-expressing, intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells (M1-ipRGCs), which are by far the most photosensitive ipRGC subtype and also have the largest response to light. Ablating in mouse the expression of both TRPC6 and TRPC7, members of the TRP channel superfamily, also essentially eliminated the M1-ipRGC light response but the intrinsic PLR was not affected. Thus, melanopsin signalling exists in both iris and retina, involving a PLCß4-mediated pathway that nonetheless diverges in the two locations.

RESUMEN

In this paper, we develop a diode-pumped all-solid-state high-energy and high beam quality Nd:YAG laser system. A master oscillator power amplifier structure is used to provide a high pulse energy laser output with a high repetition rate. In order to decrease the amplifier working current so as to reduce the impact of the thermal effect on the beam quality, a beam splitting-amplifying-combining scheme is adopted. The energy extraction efficiency of the laser system is 50.68%. We achieve 3.36 J pulse energy at a 100 Hz repetition rate with a pulse duration of 7.1 ns, a far-field beam spot 1.71 times the diffraction limit, and 1.07% energy stability (RMS).

Objective: To analyze the epidemic features of dyslipidemia among 39 980 Uygur, Kazak and Han ethnic groups in Urumqi, and to explore the methods of prevention and treatment on dyslipidemia. Methods: The differences of blood total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) of health examination population with different ethnics, genders, and ages were compared, from 2012 to 2014 in the First Affiliated Hospital of Xinjiang Medical University. Results: Among the Uygur, Kazak and Han ethnic groups, the positive rate was respectively 35.0%, 37.0%, 30.3% in TC; 34.5%, 30.1% and 32.0% in TG; 24.9%, 18.3%, and 18.2% in HDL-C; 30.1%, 31.6% and 23.3% in LDL-C. In the same ethnic group, the abnormality rate of blood lipid in the female was lower than that of the male (P<0.001). The blood lipid abnormality rate increased significantly in those with 30-39 years, and reached the highest value in the 50-59 years group, then it decreased in those aged over 60 years (P<0.001). Conclusion: The lipid abnormality rate of the Uygur and Kazak residents was higher than that of the Han nationality, and the abnormal levels of TC and LDL-C were particularly evident in Urumqi.

OBJECTIVES: Investigate the role of the epithelial-mesenchymal interaction of keratocystic odontogenic tumor (KCOT) in influencing osteoclastogenesis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fibroblasts isolated from KCOT fibrous capsule and normal gingival mucosa were, respectively, co-cultured with human immortalized oral epithelial cells (HIOECs), and the supernatant was collected to make conditioned medium, in which the osteoclastogenesis of osteoclast precursor cell line Raw 264.7 was observed. Genes related to bone resorption (RANKL, OPG, COX-2, and M-CSF) were analyzed by real-time PCR. Antibodies against human sRANKL and inhibitor of COX-2: NS398 were added to conditioned medium to investigate the inhibitory effect on osteoclastogenesis. RESULTS: Compared with co-cultured gingival fibroblasts and HIOECs (GE-CM), the conditioned medium from co-cultured KCOT fibroblasts and HIOECs (KE-CM) induced more osteoclast-like cell formation and increased NFATC1 mRNA in Raw264.7 cells (P < 0.05). Co-cultured KCOT fibroblasts (KF) and HIOECs, respectively, expressed more COX-2 mRNA than the co-cultured gingival fibroblasts (GF) and HIOECs (P < 0.05). While the ratio of RANKL/OPG in HIOECs co-cultured with KF was also significantly higher than that co-cultured with GF (P < 0.05). The anti-human sRANKL antibody in KE-CM inhibited osteoclastogenesis of Raw264.7 cells; however, NS398 displayed little inhibition. CONCLUSION: An interesting phenomenon of osteoclastogenic effect of KE-CM in vitro was investigated, which suggested an indispensable role of epithelial-mesenchymal interaction of KCOT in its bone destruction. It could be at least partly attributed to the up-regulated ratio of RANKL/OPG in epithelium induced by KCOT fibroblasts, the aggressiveness of tumor as result of epithelial-mesenchymal interaction deserves exploration further.

OBJECTIVES: To identify the association of fibronectin (FN) extra domain A (EDA) with the progression of salivary adenoid cystic carcinoma (SACC). Accordingly, the exclusion of EDA exon through the CRISPR/Cas9 system was investigated as the rescue for such pro-oncogenic splicing. MATERIALS AND METHODS: SACC-83 cells were transiently transfected with plasmids containing recombinant EDA, and the cellular growth and motility were then accessed in vitro. Epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) was investigated with immunohistochemistry, Western blot, and real-time PCR analysis. SACC tissues from 81 patients were used to access the associations between EDA+FN and clinical-pathological parameters. CRISPR/Cas9 plasmids containing sgRNA were designed and co-transfected into SACC-83 cells; the effects of EDA knockout on cellular growth and motility were then accessed. RESULTS: The recombinant EDA exhibited little effect on the proliferation of SACC cells, but significantly promoted the migration and invasion of the cells (P < 0.05), accompanied with upregulated EMT (P < 0.05); consistently, the expression of EDA+FN was positively associated with the metastasis, nerve invasion and recurrence of SACC (P < 0.05). Furthermore, the EDA knockout from the FN gene in most SACC cells resulted in a decrease in cell motility and invasion, as well as prolonged population doubling time, compared with untreated SACC-83 cells (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: The EDA domain significantly promoted the motility of SACC cells, and positively associated with the tumor progression in patients with SACC. Thus, it is a potential risk factor and also a therapeutic target for SACC. The CRISPR/Cas9 system may control a pro-oncogenic splicing process through the exclusion of EDA exon from the FN gene, leading to inhibition of motility, invasion and proliferation of cancer cells.

The incidence of urinary calculus (UC) is very high in Uyghur children in the Kashi region of Xinjiang, China, which seriously affects the growth and life quality of these children. This study was aimed at investigating the risk factors of UC in Uyghur children in Kashi region. One hundred fifteen Uyghur children (age <7 years) with UC who were treated in First People's Hospital in Kashi were enrolled in the case group. A 1:1 case-control study with a questionnaire was performed. The results showed that, among the 115 UC patients, there were more boys (71.3%) than girls (28.7%), and most cases had an onset age of 1-3 years (75.7%). A lower than primary school education in the mother, drinking unboiled water, water intake <500 mL/day, and eating too much sweets were risk factors [odds ratio (OR) = 2.385, 9.160, 3.263, and 8.945, respectively], whereas vegetable intake and exposure to summer sunshine of <2 h/day were protective factors against UC onset (OR = 0.154 and 0.344, respectively). Analysis of UC-related factors in 99 cases of <3-year-old children revealed that breastfeeding was also a protective factor (OR = 0.007), whereas frequent cow's milk intake within 5 months (OR = 2.414) and frequent "panada" intake (OR = 2.529) were risk factors. The occurrence of UC in Uyghur children in the Kashi region is mainly affected by maternal educational background, quality of drinking water, water intake volume, and dietary pattern. Furthermore, geography may also have a role.

Silent information regulator 5 (SIRT5), a member of the Sirtuin family class III nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide-dependent protein deacetylases, plays an important role in metabolic and aging processes in mammals. We identified 4 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) (G22010A, G22052A, G22119T, and G22245C) in the 3' untranslated regions of the SIRT5 gene from 572 Qinchuan cattle by sequencing and investigating their association with growth and ultrasound traits. The frequencies of genotype GG and allele G were high at the 4 SNPs. Based on the X(2) test, the genotypic distributions of the 4 SNPs were not in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium (P < 0.05 or P < 0.01). Association analysis of individual SNPs and haplotype combinations revealed that the 4 loci were significantly associated with some body measurement and ultrasound traits in Qinchuan cattle, and the H1H5 (AG-GA-GG-GG) diplotypes had better performance than other combinations in Qinchuan cattle. Our results demonstrate that SIRT5 may be a candidate for marker-assisted selection in future breeding programs for Qinchuan cattle.

Growth and meat quality traits play important roles in the evaluation of cattle productivity and are influenced by genetic and environmental factors. CRTC2 is a recently discovered gene related to obesity that may influence fat deposition. The aim of the current study was to detect polymorphisms of bovine CRTC2 and explore their relationships to growth and meat quality in Qinchuan cattle. Three single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs); g.3001 C>T; g.3034 G>A; and g.3467 T>C, were identified from sequencing results of 422 Qinchuan cattle. The genotypic distributions of both g.3034 G>A and g.3467 T>C mutations were in agreement with Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium, (P < 0.05), while the T3001C mutation was not (P > 0.05), based on χ(2) test analysis. The SNPs g.3001 C>T and g.3034 G>A are missense mutations (Ser/Phe and Ser/Thr respectively). Additionally, SNPs g.3034 G>A and g.3467 T>C showed a medium polymorphism level (0.25 < PIC< 0.50), whereas g.3001 C>T showed a low polymorphism level (PIC < 0.25). These three SNPs were significantly associated with several growth and meat quality traits in the Qinchuan cattle population (P < 0.05 or P < 0.01). Collectively, these results demonstrate that CRTC2 is involved in the regulation of cattle growth and meat quality, and suggest that CRTC2 is a potential candidate gene for marker-assisted selection in future breeding development programs for Qinchuan cattle.

Previous studies have shown that the cell death-inducing DFF45-like effector-C (CIDEC) gene is involved in lipid storage and energy metabolism, suggesting that it is a potential candidate gene that affects body measurement traits (BMTs) and meat quality traits (MQTs). The aim of this study was to identify polymorphisms of the bovine CIDEC gene and analyze their possible associations with BMTs and MQTs in 531 randomly selected Qinchuan cattle aged between 18 and 24 months. DNA sequencing and polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism were employed to detect CIDEC single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). We found five SNPs: two in exon 5 (SNP1, g.9815G>A and SNP2, g.9924C>T) and three in the 3'-untranslated region (SNP3, g.13281C>T; SNP4, g.13297A>G; and SNP5, g.13307G>A). SNP1 was a missense mutation that resulted in an arginine to glutamine amino acid change, and exhibited two genotypes (GG and AG). SNP2 was a synonymous mutation that exhibited three genotypes (CC, CT, and TT). SNP3, 4, and 5 were completely linked, and only exhibited two genotypes (CC-AA-GG and CT-AG-GA). We found significant associations between these polymorphisms and BMTs and MQTs (P < 0.05); GG, CT, and CT-AG-GA appeared to be the most beneficial genotypes. Therefore, CIDEC may affect BMTs and MQTs in Qinchuan cattle, and could be used in marker-assisted selection.

Despite sharing a similar genetic abnormality, patients with core binding factor acute myeloid leukemia (CBF-AML), which is characterized by the presence of t(8;21) or inv(16)/t(16;16), show heterogeneous survival. Other molecular or cytogenetic factors are supposed to have an impact on the prognosis. We enrolled 24 CBF-AML patients to determine the impact of cytogenetic abnormality, and c-KIT, FLT3, NPM1, and CEBPA mutations on the prognosis. Only three patients had the c-KIT mutation (3/24, 12.5%) and one had the FLT3 mutation. However, over half of the patients (14/24) harbored additional cytogenetic changes, including ten with loss of sexual chromosomes (LOS) [all in the t(8;21) group], and six had additional abnormalities (two cases had both LOS and additional abnormalities). From this small-number study, no association was found between c-KIT mutation and survival and relapse rate. However, additional chromosome abnormalities had a significant association with relapse of the disease (P = 0.027). Stem cell transplant had a trend of benefitting patients after relapse (P = 0.065). This implies that chromosome abnormalities occur in CBF-AML and might take part in the heterogeneous nature of CBF-AML.

In wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), activated sludge is thickened in secondary settling tanks and recycled into the biological reactor to maintain enough biomass for wastewater treatment. Accurately estimating the activated sludge concentration in the lower portion of the secondary clarifiers is of great importance for evaluating and controlling the sludge recycled ratio, ensuring smooth and efficient operation of the WWTP. By dividing the overall activated sludge-thickening curve into a hindered zone and a compression zone, an empirical model describing activated sludge thickening in the compression zone was obtained by empirical regression. This empirical model was developed through experiments conducted using sludge from five WWTPs, and validated by the measured data from a sixth WWTP, which fit the model well (R² = 0.98, p < 0.001). The model requires application of only one parameter, the sludge volume index (SVI), which is readily incorporated into routine analysis. By combining this model with the conservation of mass equation, an empirical model for compression settling was also developed. Finally, the effects of denitrification and addition of a polymer were also analysed because of their effect on sludge thickening, which can be useful for WWTP operation, e.g., improving wastewater treatment or the proper use of the polymer.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Migraine and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) share many similarities characterized by their epidemiology, periodic pain, lack of definable organic causes, trigger factors, comorbidities and proposed pathophysiology. In this retrospective case-control study, the association between migraine and IBS was investigated using a nationwide population-based database in Taiwan. METHODS: The data were retrieved from the National Health Insurance Research Database (NHIRD) of Taiwan. In all, 14 117 newly diagnosed migraine cases were identified in a subset of the NHIRD and 56 468 migraine-free individuals were randomly selected as the comparison cohort. The multivariate Cox proportional hazards regression model was used to explore the risk of IBS in migraine sufferers after adjusting for demographic characteristics and comorbidities. RESULTS: After adjusting for the covariates, the incidence of IBS was 1.95-fold higher in the migraine cohort than in the comparison cohort (73.87 vs. 30.14 per 10 000 person-years). The adjusted cumulative incidence of IBS was also higher in the migraine group than in the control group in the follow-up years (log-rank test, P < 0.0001). In addition, the risk was most prominent in the youngest group (<30 years old), exhibiting a 3.36-fold increased risk (95% confidence interval 2.44-4.63) of IBS compared with the migraine-free cohort. Moreover, the incidence of IBS in migraine sufferers tended to increase with the frequency of migraine diagnoses. CONCLUSION: The current population-based study demonstrated that migraine is associated with an increased risk of IBS after adjusting for comorbidities, particularly in the young population.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: To investigate the spectrum and risks of accidental injuries (AIs) amongst Parkinson disease (PD) patients. METHODS: The participants comprised PD patients aged 50 years and older who were initially diagnosed between 2000 and 2009, and a comparison group of non-PD patients. The incidence rates of accidental injury types amongst PD and non-PD patients were calculated; hazard ratios were calculated and adjusted for comorbidities, using 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of developing such outcomes in PD patients. RESULTS: In total, 4046 PD patients and 16 184 non-PD patients were followed over time. The PD patients demonstrated the following incidence rates and hazard ratios in comparison to the control cohort for accidental injuries: all injuries, 19.78 per 100 person-years (100 PYs), adjusted hazard ratio (HR) 1.30 (95% CI 1.24-1.36); head injury, 2.95 per 100 PYs, HR 1.88 (95% CI 1.64-2.15); bone fracture and dislocation, 4.61 per 100 PYs, HR 1.39 (95% CI 1.25-1.54); burns, 0.66 per 100 PYs, HR 1.01 (95% CI 0.78-1.32); injury to spinal cord, plexus and nerves, 0.15 per 100 PYs, HR 1.25 (95% CI 0.72-2.17); superficial injuries and contusions, 11.41 per 100 PYs, HR 1.20 (95% CI 1.12-1.27). The injury risk for the 69-79 years age group in PD compared with controls of the same age (HR 1.38) was significantly higher compared with that of the 50-69 age groups in PD and controls (HR 1.16). CONCLUSIONS: Parkinson disease patients demonstrate a significantly elevated risk of developing all accidental injury types except burn injuries and injuries to spinal cord, plexus and nerves, compared with age-matched controls. The risk increases as age increases.
