RESUMEN

Fluorescence analysis is an increasingly important contributor to the early diagnosis of kidney diseases. To achieve precise visualization of the kidneys and early diagnosis of related diseases, an asymmetric pyrrolopyrrolidone (DPP) dye platform with C-aromatic substituents and N-lipophilic/hydrophilic modification was constructed. Based on these, we developed the renal-clearable, water-soluble, and kidney injury biomarker leucine aminopeptidase (LAP) activated ratiometric fluorescent probe DPP-S-L. In the mouse model of cisplatin-induced acute kidney injury and during the development of type 2 diabetes to diabetic kidney disease, we visualized for the first time the upregulation of LAP in the kidney and urine by dual-channel ratiometric fluorescence signal and diagnosed the kidney injury earlier and more sensitively than blood/urine enzyme detection and tissue analysis. This study showcases an excellent asymmetric DPP dye platform and renal-clearable ratiometric fluorescent probe design strategy that is extended to determination and visualization of other biomarkers for early disease diagnosis.

Exercise has been recognized as an effective intervention in the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), supported by numerous studies. However, the precise effects of exercise on pulmonary function remain to be fully elucidated. In this study, using a rat model of swimming exercise training and monocrotaline-induced PAH, we aimed to explore its impact on pulmonary morphology and function. Our investigations revealed that MCT-treated rats exhibited augmented mean pulmonary arterial pressure (MPAP) and pulmonary vascular remodeling, which can be attenuated by 4 weeks of swimming exercise training (60 min/day, 5 days/week). Notably, MCT-treated rats showed impaired pulmonary function, as manifested by decreased tidal volume and dynamic compliance, which were reversed by exercise training. Assessment of pulmonary substrate in PAH rats indicated a prominent pro-inflammatory substrate, evidenced by macrophage accumulation through quantitative immunohistological analysis of macrophage-like cell expression (CD68), and extracellular matrix remodeling, evaluated by Masson staining. Importantly, both the pro-inflammatory substrate and extracellular matrix remodeling were ameliorated by swimming exercise training. Additionally, serum biochemical analysis demonstrated elevated levels of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and Apolipoprotein B following MCT treatment, which were reduced with exercise intervention. Moreover, exercise enhanced systemic insulin sensitivity in both MCT-treated and untreated rats. Notably, MCT and exercise treatment both decreased fasting blood glucose (FBG) levels in rats, whereas exercise training reinstated FBG levels to normal in MCT-treated rats. In summary, our study suggests that swimming exercise confers a pulmonary protective effect in MCT-induced PAH rats, highlighting the potential importance of exercise-based rehabilitation in the management of PAH.

Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) is an emerging tick-borne hemorrhagic fever disease with high fatality rate of 10%-20%. Vaccines or specific therapeutic measures remain lacking. Human interferon inducible transmembrane protein 3 (hIFITM3) is a broad-spectrum antiviral factor targeting viral entry. However, the antiviral activity of hIFITM3 against SFTS virus (SFTSV) and the functional mechanism of IFITM3 remains unclear. Here we demonstrate that endogenous IFITM3 provides protection against SFTSV infection and participates in the anti-SFTSV effect of type Ⅰ and Ⅲ interferons (IFNs). IFITM3 overexpression exhibits anti-SFTSV function by blocking Gn/Gc-mediated viral entry and fusion. Further studies showed that IFITM3 binds SFTSV Gc directly and its intramembrane domain (IMD) is responsible for this interaction and restriction of SFTSV entry. Mutation of two neighboring cysteines on IMD weakens IFITM3-Gc interaction and attenuates the antiviral activity of IFITM3, suggesting that IFITM3-Gc interaction may partly mediate the inhibition of SFTSV entry. Overall, our data demonstrate for the first time that hIFITM3 plays a critical role in the IFNs-mediated anti-SFTSV response, and uncover a novel mechanism of IFITM3 restriction of SFTSV infection, highlighting the potential of clinical intervention on SFTS disease.

Circular RNAs (circRNAs) are non-coding RNAs discovered in recent years, which are produced by back-splicing involving the 3' and 5' ends of RNA molecules. There is increasing evidence that circRNAs have important roles in cancer, neurological diseases, cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, and other diseases. In addition, host circRNAs and virus-encoded circRNAs participate in the body's immune response, with antiviral roles. This review summarizes the mechanisms by which host and viral circRNAs interact during the host immune response. Comprehensive investigations have revealed that host circRNAs function as miRNA sponges in a particular manner, primarily by inhibiting viral replication. Viral circRNAs have more diverse functions, which generally involve promoting viral replication. In addition, in contrast to circRNAs from RNA viruses, circRNAs from DNA viruses can influence host cell migration, proliferation, and apoptosis, along with their effects on viral replication. In summary, circRNAs have potential as diagnostic and therapeutic targets, offering a foundation for the diagnosis and treatment of viral diseases.

Artificial materials, characterized by their distinctive properties and customized functionalities, occupy a central role in a wide range of applications including electronics, spintronics, optoelectronics, catalysis, and energy storage. The emergence of atomically thin two-dimensional (2D) materials has driven the creation of artificial heterostructures, harnessing the potential of combining various 2D building blocks with complementary properties through the art of stacking engineering. The promising outcomes achieved for heterostructures have spurred an inquisitive exploration of homostructures, where identical 2D layers are precisely stacked. This perspective primarily focuses on the field of stacking engineering within layered homostructures, where precise control over translational or rotational degrees of freedom between vertically stacked planes or layers is paramount. In particular, we provide an overview of recent advancements in the stacking engineering applied to 2D homostructures. Additionally, we will shed light on research endeavors venturing into three-dimensional (3D) structures, which allow us to proactively address the limitations associated with artificial 2D homostructures. We anticipate that the breakthroughs in stacking engineering in 3D materials will provide valuable insights into the mechanisms governing stacking effects. Such advancements have the potential to unlock the full capability of artificial layered homostructures, propelling the future development of materials, physics, and device applications.

Aquatic ecosystems are being increasingly polluted by microplastics (MPs), which calls for an understanding of how MPs affect microbially driven biogenic element cycling in water environments. A 28-day incubation experiment was conducted using freshwater lake water added with three polymer types of MPs (i.e., polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene) separately or in combination at a concentration of 1 items/L. The effects of various MPs on microbial communities and functional genes related to carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, and sulfur cycling were analyzed using metagenomics. Results showed that Sphingomonas and Novosphingobium, which were indicator taxa (genus level) in the polyethylene treatment group, made the largest functional contribution to biogenic element cycling. Following the addition of MPs, the relative abundances of genes related to methane oxidation (e.g., hdrD, frhB, accAB) and denitrification (napABC, nirK, norB) increased. These changes were accompanied by increased relative abundances of genes involved in organic phosphorus mineralization (e.g., phoAD) and sulfate reduction (cysHIJ), as well as decreased relative abundances of genes involved in phosphate transport (phnCDE) and the SOX system. Findings of this study underscore that MPs, especially polyethylene, increase the potential of greenhouse gas emissions (CO2, N2O) and water pollution (PO43-, H2S) in freshwater lakes at the functional gene level.

BACKGROUND: Generally, the translocation of SRY onto one of the X chromosomes leads to 46, XX testicular disorders of sex development, a relatively rare condition characterized by the presence of testicular tissue with a 46, XX karyotype. Three prenatal cases of unbalanced X; Y translocation carrying SRY were identified in this study. METHODS: Structural variants were confirmed using single nucleotide polymorphism array and chromosomal karyotyping. X chromosome inactivation (XCI) was also analyzed. Detailed clinical features of the three cases were collected. RESULTS: We identified two fetuses with maternal inherited unbalanced X; Y translocations carrying SRY and skewed XCI presenting with normal female external genitalia, and one fetus with de novo 46, XX (SRY+) and random XCI manifested male phenotypic external genitalia. CONCLUSION: This study reports that cases with unbalanced X; Y translocations carrying SRY manifested a normal female external genitalia in a prenatal setting. We speculate that the skewed XCI mediates the silence of SRY. In addition, our study emphasizes that combining clinical findings with pedigree analysis is critical for estimating the prognosis of fetuses with sex chromosome abnormalities.

Schistosomiasis is a significant public health threat, and Oncomelania hupensis is the only intermediate host for schistosoma japonicum. We conducted 12-year monthly repeated surveys to explore the interactive and lag effects of environmental factors on snail density and to monitor their long-term and seasonal trends in a bottomland around the Dongting Lake region in China. Relevant environmental data were obtained from multiple sources. A Bayesian kernel machine regression model and a Bayesian temporal model combined with a distributed lag model were constructed to analyze interactive and lag effects of environmental factors on snail density. The results indicated the average annual snail density in the study site exhibited an increasing and then decreasing trend, peaking in 2013. Snail densities were the highest in October and the lowest in January in a year. Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and water level were the most effective predictors of snail density, with potential interactions among temperature, precipitation, and NDVI. The mean minimum temperature in January, water level, precipitation and NDVI were positively correlated with snail density at lags ranging from 1 to 4 months. These findings could serve as references for relevant authorities to monitor the changing trend of snail density and implement control measures, thereby reducing the occurrence of schistosomiasis.

Understanding the porosity of biochar (BC) that promotes the heavy metal (HM) passivation during composting can contribute to the sustainable management of pig manure (PM). The current work aimed to explore the influence of BC with varying pore sizes on the physicochemical properties and morphological changes of HMs (including Zn, Cu, Cr, As, and Hg), and microbiota development during PM composting. The various pore sizes of BC were generated by pyrolyzing pine wood at 400 (T1), 500 (T2), 600 (T3) and 700 (T4) °C, respectively. The results revealed a positive correlation between specific surface area of BC and pyrolysis temperature. BC addition contributed to a significantly extended compost warming rate and duration of high-temperature period, as well as HM passivation, reflected in the decrease in Exc-Zn (63-34%) and Red-Cu (28-13%) content, and the conversion of Oxi-Cr (29-21%) and Red-Hg (16-5%) to more stable forms. Moreover, BC at T4 exhibited the best effect on Zn and Cu passivation due to the highest specific surface area (380.03 m2/g). In addition to its impact on HM passivation, BC addition improved the microbial environment during PM composting, leading to enhanced microbial diversity and richness. Notably, Chloroflexi and Bacteroidota played key roles in promoting the transformation of Exc-Cu and Red-Hg into stable forms. This phenomenon further stimulated the enhanced decomposition of organic matter (OM) when BC prepared at 600-700 °C was added. Therefore, it can be concluded that the regulation of BC porosity is an effective strategy to improve HM passivation and the overall effectiveness of PM composting.

BACKGROUND: Delirium is a common complication among adults. It is essential to improve the outcomes of delirium. AIM: To systematically synthesize the evidence on the effectiveness of the nurse-led non-pharmacological interventions on outcomes of delirium in adults. METHODS: Electronic databases including CINAHL, Cochrane Library, MEDLINE, EMBASE, PubMed, Web of Science, PsycINFO, and Clinical Trial Registration were searched comprehensively by the authors. The authors reviewed the full text and assessed the risk of bias using the Cochrane Risk of Bias Tool 2.0. The meta-analysis was performed using RevMan and Stata software. The forest plots showed the overall effect of the included study and the I2 test was used to assess the degree of heterogeneity between studies. Random effects models were used to analyze studies with significant heterogeneity. RESULTS: A total of 32 studies (10,122 participants) were included in the meta-analysis. Nurse-led non-pharmacological interventions resulted in a significantly lower incidence of delirium compared with the usual care/control group (risk ratio = 0.74, p < .001) and reduced mortality in the hospital compared with usual care (risk ratio = 0.81, p = .04). However, the implementation of nurse-led, non-pharmacological interventions had no significant effect on the duration, severity of delirium, or length of hospital stay. LINKING EVIDENCE TO ACTION: Our findings suggest that the nurse-led, non-pharmacological strategy was effective in reducing the incidence of delirium and mortality in the hospital. Multicomponent interventions were the most effective strategy for reducing the incidence of delirium in adults.

Hepatic lipid droplets (LDs) and peroxynitrite (ONOO-) levels are closely related to nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Additionally, some drug-induced liver injury (DILI) is often associated with ONOO-. Here, we constructed and screened the quasi-LDs-targeted and ONOO--responsive fluorescent probe MBDP-Py+ to investigate the interaction of NAFLD with DILI. By monitoring the upregulation of the ONOO- levels and the accumulation of LDs, MBDP-Py+ was more sensitive and efficient than tissue staining and serum markers detection in evaluating the early toxicity of NAFLD and diagnosing the anticancer-DILI. More importantly, the sensitive enhancement of fluorescence signals demonstrated that in different stages of NAFLD, the dominant element of liver injury was different in the NAFLD combined with DILI mice models. As the degree of NAFLD deepens, the synergistic effect of the two will lead to more serious liver damage.

The exploitation of stable, high-affinity, and low-cost nanoprobes is essential to develop immunoassays for real-time monitoring of foodborne pathogens, so as to safeguard human health. The possible interaction of the Fc fragment of antibodies with spA protein on Staphylococcus aureus will result in unexpected interference. To address this consideration, we described herein for the first time the development of nanobodies that by definition are devoid of the Fc fraction. These nanobodies directed against Cronobacter sakazakii (C. sakazakii) were retrieved from a dedicated immune phage-displayed nanobody library. The binders showed superiority of low cost, strong stability, high binding affinity, and adequate load capacity. Thereafter, a phage-mediated sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was constructed by using Cs-Nb2 as an antigen-capturing antibody and phage-displayed Cs-Nb1 as a detection probe. To further enhance the sensitivity, a chemiluminescent enzyme immunoassay (CISA) was established by replacing the substrate from 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) to luminol, providing a limit of detection of 1.04 × 104 CFU/mL, with a recovery of 98.15-114.63% for the detection of C. sakazakii in dairy products. The proposed nanobody-based phage-mediated sandwich CLISA shows various advantages, including high sensitivity, cost effectiveness, enhanced loading capacity of the enzyme, and high resistance to the matrix effect, providing a strategy for the design of immunoassays toward foodborne pathogens.

Nanobodies have gained widespread application in immunoassays. However, their small size presents a significant challenge in achieving effective immobilization and optimal sensitivity. Here, we present a novel "one-for-two"-oriented immobilization platform based on an organism-bispecific nanobody (O-BsNb) scaffold, enabling highly sensitive detection of two bacterial pathogens. Through genetic engineering, a bispecific nanobody (BsNb) was engineered, targeting Salmonella spp. and Vibrio parahaemolyticus. The O-BsNb scaffold allowed one nanobody to bind specifically to inactivated bacteria, forming an organism-oriented immobilization platform, while the other served as the capture antibody. Consequently, the O-BsNb bioscaffold-based ELISA (O-ELISA) for individual detection of S. enteritidis and V. parahaemolyticus was established. When compared to the sandwich ELISA utilizing passive immobilization of monovalent nanobodies, the O-ELISA exhibited a remarkable 13.4- and 13.7-fold improvement in LOD for S. enteritidis and V. parahaemolyticus, respectively, highlighting the enhanced immobilization efficacy of the O-ELISA. Furthermore, the feasibility and reproducibility of the assay in practical samples were meticulously evaluated, revealing exemplary performance in terms of recovery precision and assay stability. These findings demonstrate the significant potential of the O-ELISA platform for the sensitive detection of macromolecules, opening new avenues for efficient pathogen identification in foodborne safety and clinical diagnostics.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the clinical effectiveness and pregnancy rate after hysteroscopic resection (HR) and/or vaginal repair (VR) in patients with cesarean scar defect (CSD). METHODS: This prospective observational study enrolled 191 patients who received CSD surgery in the First affiliated hospital of Sun Yat-sen University between September 2019 to February 2022 (96 in HR and 95 in VR, respectively). Patient follow-up were performed three months after surgery in both groups by transvaginal ultrasound to confirm the presence of fluid in the niche, along with the resolution of prolonged menses at the same time. The primary outcome was the clinical effectiveness between HR and VR, identified by the resolution of prolonged menses. RESULTS: The rates of niche-fluid disappearance (70.1% vs 60.2%, P = 0.176) and prolonged menses resolution (74.8% vs 80.0%, P = 0.341) were comparable for HR and VR. A subgroup analysis for niche size revealed that HR provides patients with small niche a more favorable rate of menstrual resolution compared to VR (size of niche ≤ 15 mm2, aOR = 3.423, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.073-10.918), but patients with large niche experience a lower rate of resolution compared to VR (size of niche > 25 mm2, aOR = 0.286, 95% CI 0.087- 0.938). During follow-up, 41 patients who wanted to conceive became pregnant. Kaplan-Meier estimates of the cumulative probability of pregnancy at 12 months and 24 months were 47.1% (95% CI: 34.5%, 58.8%) and 63.8% (95% CI: 52.5%, 72.9%), respectively. The median pregnancy time was 22 months (95% CI: 14.2, 29.8) after VR and 12 months (95% CI: 8.3, 15.7, Gehan-Breslow-Wilcoxon P = 0.021) after HR. Among patients with subsequent infertility, 31.6% achieved pregnancy by unassisted mode and 29.8% by IVF/ICSI. Moreover, among patients with previously failed IVF/ICSI treatment, 60% (12/20) obtained pregnancy, including 71.4% (10/14) after HR and 33.3% (2/6) after VR. CONCLUSIONS: Hysteroscopic resection is as effective as vaginal repair at relieving symptoms of CSD-associated prolonged menses. Hysteroscopic resection is the modality of choice with an improvement in prolonged menses for small niche, while vaginal might be considered for a large niche. Furthermore, surgical intervention could improve the clinical pregnancy rate of CSD patients. All of these provide evidence for the individualized management of CSD.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to explore risk factors for lupus nephritis (LN) in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients and establish a Nomogram prediction model based on LASSO-logistic regression. METHODS: The clinical and laboratory data of SLE patients in Meishan People's Hospital from July 2012 to December 2021 were analyzed retrospectively. All SLE patients were divided into two groups with or without LN. Risk factors were screened based on LASSO-logistic regression analysis, and a Nomogram prediction model was established. The receiver operating characteristic curve, calibration curves, and decision curve analysis were adopted to evaluate the performance of the Nomogram model. RESULTS: A total of 555 SLE patients were enrolled, including 303 SLE patients with LN and 252 SLE patients without LN. LASSO regression and multivariate logistic regression analyses showed that ESR, mucosal ulcer, proteinuria, and hematuria were independent risk factors for LN in SLE patients. The four clinical features were incorporated into the Nomogram prediction model. Results showed that calibration curve was basically close to the diagonal dotted line with slope 1 (ideal prediction case), which proved that the prediction ability of the model was acceptable. In addition, the decision curve analysis showed that the Nomogram prediction model could bring net clinical benefits to patients when the threshold probability was 0.12-0.54. CONCLUSION: Four clinical indicators of ESR, mucosal ulcer, proteinuria, and hematuria were independent risk factors for LN in SLE patients. The predictive power of the Nomogram model based on LASSO-logistic regression was acceptable and could be used to guide clinical work.

Snail is a dedicated transcriptional repressor and acts as a master inducer of EMT and metastasis, yet the underlying signaling cascades triggered by Snail still remain elusive. Here, we report that Snail promotes colorectal cancer (CRC) migration by preventing non-coding RNA LOC113230-mediated degradation of argininosuccinate synthase 1 (ASS1). LOC113230 is a novel Snail target gene, and Snail binds to the functional E-boxes within its proximal promoter to repress its expression in response to TGF-ß induction. Ectopic expression of LOC113230 potently suppresses CRC cell growth, migration, and lung metastasis in xenograft experiments. Mechanistically, LOC113230 acts as a scaffold to facilitate recruiting LRPPRC and the TRAF2 E3 ubiquitin ligase to ASS1, resulting in enhanced ubiquitination and degradation of ASS1 and decreased arginine synthesis. Moreover, elevated ASS1 expression is essential for CRC growth and migration. Collectively, these findings suggest that TGF-ß and Snail promote arginine synthesis via inhibiting LOC113230-mediated LRPPRC/TRAF2/ASS1 complex assembly and this complex can serve as potential target for the development of new therapeutic approaches to treat CRC.

BACKGROUND: Thrombopoietin receptor agonists (TPO-RAs) have emerged as a recommended treatment for children with persistent and/or chronic immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP). The purpose of this study was to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of TPO-RAs relative to treatment without TPO-RAs (non-TPO-RAs/usual care) for ITP in children who do not respond to first-line therapy and in whom splenectomy is not recommended in Ontario, Canada, from a hospital payer perspective. PROCEDURE: A 2-year Markov model with an embedded decision tree was used. Data on medications used, dose, response rate, bleeding, and emergency treatment events were collected from the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto. The health outcomes were described in quality-adjusted life-years (QALYs). Health-state utilities were derived from the peer-reviewed literature. Scenario analyses, deterministic, and probabilistic sensitivity analyses were conducted. Economic costs were measured in 2021 Canadian dollars ($1.00 = US$0.80) RESULTS: TPO-RAs are estimated to result in an increased cost of $27,118 and a QALY gain of 0.21 compared to non-TPO-RAs over a 2-year horizon, resulting in an incremental cost-effectiveness ratio (ICER) of $129,133. In a 5-year scenario analysis, the ICER fell to $76,403. In the probabilistic sensitivity analysis, TPO-RAs exhibit a 40.0% probability of being cost-effective at a conventional ($100,000) willingness-to-pay threshold per QALY gained. CONCLUSIONS: Further assessment of the long-term efficacy of TPO-RAs is warranted to obtain more precise long-term estimates. As the costs of TPO-RAs decline with the introduction of generic formulations, TPO-RAs may be increasingly cost-effective.

Seven new tanzawaic acid derivatives, steckwaic acids E-K (1-7), and one new benzene derivate (8), together with seven known tanzawaic acid analogues (9-16) were isolated from the marine algicolous fungus Penicillium steckii SCSIO 41040. The structures and absolute configurations of these new compounds (1-8) were determined by spectroscopic analyses, X-ray diffraction, and comparison of ECD spectra to calculations. Compounds 2, 10, and 15 inhibited lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced nuclear factor kappa-B (NF-κB) with IC50 values of 10.4, 18.6, and 15.2 µM, respectively. Compound 2 could suppress the receptor activator of NF-κB ligand (RANKL)-induced osteoclast differentiation in bone marrow macrophage cells (BMMCs). To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of osteoclastogenesis inhibitory activity for tanzawaic acid derivatives.

BACKGROUND: There is an increasing demand for prenatal diagnostic testing in twin pregnancies, however, anecdotally there is a higher incidence of procedure-related complications after amniocentesis than that in singleton pregnancies. There is a paucity of data regarding risk factors of amniocentesis in twin pregnancies. METHODS: Women with twin pregnancies who underwent amniocentesis between January 2016 and December 2020 were enrolled in this retrospective study. Procedure-related complications including spontaneous miscarriage, intrauterine fetal death, spontaneous preterm delivery, preterm premature rupture of membranes, and placental abruption in one or both fetuses after amniocentesis were assessed. Meanwhile, potential risk factors related to amniocentesis including chorionicity, gestational age, conception, number of needle insertions, parity, history of miscarriage, indications, and pregnancy-related complications (pregnancy-induced hypertension and gestational diabetes) were also recorded. RESULTS: A total of 811 women with twin pregnancies underwent amniocentesis were included, with a procedure-related complications rate of 3.83%. Risk factors associated with increased risk of procedure-related complications after amniocentesis in twin pregnancies were chorionicity (adjusted odds ratio [aOR]: 4.06), gestational age at the procedure (aOR: 2.76), and numbers of needle insertions (aOR: 3.26). In the monochorionic twin pregnancy, hemorrhage during this pregnancy (aOR: 12.01), polyhydramnios (aOR: 5.03), and numbers of needle insertions (aOR: 3.15) were risk factors after amniocentesis. In the dichorionic twin pregnancy, gestational age at the procedure (OR:4.47) affected the risk of procedure-related complications after amniocentesis. In the subgroup of gestational age at the procedure ≤ 24+ 0 weeks, risk factors associated with increased risk of procedure-related complications after amniocentesis in twin pregnancies were chorionicity (aOR: 5.14), and numbers of needle insertions (aOR: 3.76). CONCLUSION: The procedure-related complications rate is 3.83% in our institution during the study period. The present study has emphasized the significance of certain risk factors for adverse outcome and will be useful in counseling patients with twin pregnancies.

Influenza is an acute respiratory infectious disease caused by influenza virus that seriously endangers people's health. Influenza vaccination is the most effective means to prevent influenza virus infection and its serious complications. MDCK cells are considered to be superior to chicken embryos for the production of influenza vaccines, but the tumorigenicity of cells is a concern over the theoretical possibility of the risk of adverse events. The theoretical risks need to be adequately addressed if public confidence in programs of immunization are to be maintained. In this paper, studies of the tumorigenic potential of cell lines, with MDCK cells as an example, published since 2010 are reviewed. The mechanism of tumorigenicity of MDCK cells is discussed with reference to cell heterogeneity and epithelial to mesenchymal transition (EMT). Understanding the mechanism of the acquisition of a tumorigenic phenotype by MDCK cells might assist in estimating potential risks associated with using tumorigenic cell substrates for vaccine production.
