RESUMEN

We report on carrier dynamics in a spin photodiode based on a ferromagnetic-metal-GaAs tunnel junction. We show that the helicity-dependent current is determined not only by the electron spin polarization and spin asymmetry of the tunneling but in great part by a dynamical factor resulting from the competition between tunneling and recombination in the semiconductor, as well as by a specific quantity: the charge polarization of the photocurrent. The two latter factors can be efficiently controlled through an electrical bias. Under longitudinal magnetic field, we observe a strong increase of the signal arising from inverted Hanle effect, which is a fingerprint of its spin origin. Our approach represents a radical shift in the physical description of this family of emerging spin devices.

A quantum cascade laser emitting at λ∼8.5 µm based on the excited-state injection is presented. The operating voltage is reduced for a low-voltage defect in the excited-state design, compared with the conventional ground-state injection design. The threshold voltage and voltage defect are as low as 6.3 V and 54 mV for a 30-stage active region, respectively. Devices were fabricated through standard buried-heterostructure processing to decrease the heat accumulation. A continuous-wave optical power of 340 mW is obtained at 283 K with a threshold current density of 2.7 kA/cm2. Such a design has the potential to further improve the wall plug efficiency for increased voltage efficiency.

Natural products generally contain complex and multiple bioactive compounds that are responsible for the effects on health through complicated synergistic and/or suppressive actions. As an important raw material of local ethnic minority tea, ethnomedicines and food supplements in southwestern areas of China, Docynia indica (Wall.) Decne (DID) mainly consists of phlorizin (PHZ), which is the main active component. In this study, the holistic activities and the interactions of components of PHZ, non-phlorizin (NP) in the DID extract (DIDE) were evaluated. A rapid and effective high-speed counter-current chromatography (HSCCC) was performed to knock out PHZ from DIDE and the purity of PHZ was 96.01% determined by HPLC, with a recovery rate of 96.76%. After 13 weeks of treatment course in a high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obese mice model, the results revealed that the DIDE and PHZ significantly decreased weight gain, blood lipid levels, hyperplasia of adipocytes and alleviated inflammation (p < 0.05). Both DIDE and PHZ improves insulin resistance (p < 0.001). Meanwhile, the intestinal barrier function was improved compared to HFD group, through the determination of serum lipopolysaccharides (LPS), glucagon-likepeptide-2 (GLP-2) and hematoxylin-eosin staining of jejunum. Interestingly, after NP treatment, the metabolic syndrome of the HFD-induced obesity appeared to have a similar improvement. All the experiments showed that there is a synergistic weakening phenomenon when PHZ and NP interact with each other in the mixed state. In conclusion, for the PHZ and NP showing a good effect on anti-obesity, anti-inflammation, and intestinal barrier function, DIDE could be a good source of functional food to prevent obesity.

Periplaneta americana is one of the common traditional Chinese medicines, which has a long application history. It can tonify spleen, promote blood circulation, induce diuresis to alleviate edema, and promote granulation. It is clinically used for the treatment of alimentary canal diseases, chronic heart failure, cutaneous lesion, periodontitis and other diseases. There are some representative prescriptions, such as Kangfu Xinye, Xinmailong injection, Ganlong capsule, and Xiaozheng Yigan tablet. This paper reviewed the chemical components, pharmacological effects and clinical applications of P. americana, firstly summarized standards for the quality control of P. americana, found out and analyzed the key problems in the research. The aim of this paper is to provide the references for the further development and application of P. americana.

We demonstrate a quantum cascade laser with active regions consisting of InAs quantum dots deposited on GaAs buffer layers that are embedded in InGaAs wells confined by InAlAs barriers. Continuous wave room temperature lasing at the wavelength of 7.2 µm has been demonstrated with the threshold current density as low as 1.89 kA/cm2, while in pulsed operational mode lasing at temperatures as high as 110 °C had been observed. A phenomenological theory explaining the improved performance due to weak localization of states had been formulated.

We demonstrate a surface-emitting quantum cascade laser (QCL) based on second-order buried distributed feedback/distributed Bragg reflector (DFB/DBR) gratings for feedback and outcoupling. The grating fabricated beneath the waveguide was found to fundamentally favor lasing in symmetric mode either through analysis or experiment. Single-lobe far-field radiation pattern with full width at half maximum (FWHM) of 0.18° was obtained along the cavity-length direction. Besides, the buried DFB/DBR grating structure successfully provided an efficient vertical outcoupling mechanism with low optical losses, which manages to achieve a high surface outcouping efficiency of 46% in continuous-wave (CW) operation and 60% in pulsed operation at room temperature. Single-mode emission with a side-mode suppression ratio (SMSR) about 25 dB was continuously tunable by heat sink temperature or injection current. Our work contributes to the realization of high efficiency surface-emitting devices with high far-field beam quality that are significantly needed in many application fields.

Metallic periodic structure in subwavelength scale offers an exciting way to couple light into surface plasmons (SPs), thus manipulating the properties of near-field optics. We show that subwavelength metallic grating (SMG) defined on the substrate side of substrate emitting quantum cascade lasers enables far-field improvement in mid-infrared spectrum. The SMG is designed to tailor the interaction of SPs with single mode transverse magnetic light. The experiment results are in good agreement with the simulated model. A far-field full width at half maximum (FWHM) divergence angle of 3.9 ° in the direction perpendicular to the laser waveguide layers is obtained, improved by a factor of 8.5 compared with traditional surface emitting device.

We report on a compact THz quantum cascade laser source emitting at, individually controllable, three different wavelengths (92.6, 93.9, and 95.1 µm). This multiwavelength laser array can be used as a prototype of the emission source of THz wavelength division multiplex (WDM) wireless communication system. The source consists of three tapered single-mode distributed feedback (DFB) terahertz quantum cascade lasers fabricated monolithically on a single chip. All array elements feature longitudinal as well as lateral single-mode in the entire injection range. The peak output powers of individual lasers are 42, 73, and 37 mW at 10 K, respectively.

We report a simple single-step etching method for formation of black surface on silicon wafer by using HAuCl4-HF-H2O2 etching solution, in which catalytic Au particles were deposited in situ. The black surface suppresses the reflectivity in a wide spectral region. The formation mechanism involved has been discussed.

There have been considerable interests in methane detection based on infrared absorption spectroscopy for industrial and environment monitoring. The authors report on the realization of photoacoustic detection of methane (CH4) using mid-infrared distributed-feedback quantum cascade laser (DFB-QCL). The absorption line at 1316.83 cm(-1) was selected for CH4 detection, which can be reached by the self-manufactured DFB-QCL source operating in pulsed mode near 7.6 microm at room-temperature. The CH4 gas is filled to a Helmholtz resonant photoacoustic cell, which was equipped with a commercial electret microphone. The DFB-QCL was operated at 234 Hz with an 80 mW optical peak power. A detection limit of 189 parts per billion in volume was derived when the signal-to-noise ratio equaled 1.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the influence of borneol on intestinal absorption of muscone in rats. METHOD: An in situ intestinal circulation perfusion experiment was used to study the changes in intestinal absorption kinetics of muscone before and after being compatible with borneol. RESULT: Compared with the muscone group (MG), the absorption rate constants (Ka), the half-life period (T1/2) and the absorption rate (A) of muscone in the borneol + muscone group (BMG) were on the rise, but with no significant difference; after being compatible with borneol for a long period, Ka, T1/2 and A in the last borneol on muscone group (LBMG) increased, with significant difference (P < 0.05). in duodenum, LBMG showed better effects than MG (T1/2, P < 0.05); and so did in jejunum (Ka, P < 0.05; T1/2, P < 0.05); in ileum, there was no significant statistical difference between LBMG and MG. CONCLUSION: Borneol can promote the intestinal absorption of muscone in rats to some extent.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Aucklandiae Radix (AR) and Vladimiriae Radix (VR) were used to treat gastrointestinal, liver and gallbladder diseases at practice. In most conditions, VR was used to be a substitute of AR or a local habit may attribute to the same main active ingredients Costunolide and Dehydrocostus lactone, which presented many similar pharmacological activities. However, other different lactone compounds in AR and VR also play a role in disease treatment, so the difference in therapeutic effects of AR and VR in related diseases needs to be further studied. AIMS OF THE STUDY: Revealing the differences between the chemical compounds of the total lactone extracts of AR and VR (TLE of AR and VR) and the differences in the protective effects of cholestatic liver injury to ensure rational use of AR and VR. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: The macroporous adsorption resin was used to purify and enrich the lactone compounds to obtain the total lactone extracts of AR and VR. HPLC-PDA was used to obtain the data to establish chemical fingerprint and chemometric analysis to compare similarities and differences between TLE of AR and VR. The pharmacodynamic experiment revealed how TLE of AR and VR to show protect effects on cholestatic liver injury. RESULTS: Similarity analysis results showed TLE of AR and VR had a high similarity (>0.9). Nevertheless, difference analysis results showed 4 compounds, Costunolide, Dehydrocostus lactone, 3ß-acetoxy-11ß-guaia-4 (15), 10 (14)-diene-12,6α-olide and vladinol F may contribute to the differences between them. The pharmacodynamics experiments results showed the TLE of AR and VR affected the different liver cholate-associated transporters mRNA expression (TLE of AR up-regulated CYP7A1, TLE of VR down-regulated FXR and BSEP), the TLE of AR and VR had an effect to regulate biochemical indicators (AST, ALT, ALP, TBA) of liver function, and TLE of VR was better than TLE of AR in reducing the expression of inflammatory factors (IL-6 and IL-1ß). CONCLUSION: The liver protection of AR and VR have been confirmed, but the differences of material basis and mechanism of drug efficacy needed further study to guarantee formulation research and provide theoretical references for clinical rational applications of AR and VR.

BACKGROUND: The intestinal flora imbalance and metabolic disorders are closely related to the pathogenesis of ulcerative colitis (UC). As a commonly used herb for the treatment of gastrointestinal diseases, Vladimiriae Radix (VR) has been used for hundreds of years, and its main active ingredients are costunolide (COS) and dehydrocostus lactone (DEH). Clinical usage habits and previous studies have shown that the processed Vladimiriae Radix (pVR) seems to be more suitable for treating bowel disease than the raw Vladimiriae Radix (rVR), but there is still no relevant comparative study. PURPOSE: To investigate the therapeutic effect of rVR and pVR on UC by analyzing the intestinal flora, metabolomics and tissue distribution. METHODS: UC rat models were established to investigate the anti-inflammatory activities of rVR and pVR by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), and to study their regulation of intestinal flora and metabolism by 16s rRNA gene analysis and Ultra Performance Liquid Chromatography Tandem Mass Spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS). Moreover, the distribution of COS and DEH in UC mouse tissues were also observed by High Performance Liquid Chromatography Mass Spectrometry (HPLC-MS). RESULTS: rVR and pVR reduced tissue damage and the levels of TNF-α, IL-6, IL-1ß, IL-10, TGF-ß and MPO, especially pVR. 16s rRNA gene analysis showed that rVR superior in ameliorating species evenness and restoring the abundance of Lachnospiraceae and Ruminococcaceae, while pVR is better at increasing the richness and the abundance of Prevotellaceae. Metabolomics analysis suggested that rVR regulates the ß-alanine, pantothenic acid and coenzyme A biosynthesis, but pVR regulates more abundant metabolic pathways. The tissue distribution data indicated the accumulation of COS and DEH in the gastrointestinal tract. CONCLUSION: rVR and pVR had obvious therapeutic effect on UC. The potential mechanisms might be regulating abnormal metabolism, affecting the diversity and structure of intestinal flora, and accumulation of COS and DEH in colon.

Semiconductor nanocrystals (NCs) prepared by wet-chemical routes have been proposed as an attractive candidate for fabrication of the third-generation thin-film solar cells due to their quantum confinement effects and excellent dispersion ability in polymer films. However, to date, a solar cell incorporating semiconductor NCs in the photoactive layer still has rather low efficiency due to the low carrier mobility of the non-continued NC phase and the possible radiative recombination in NCs. To avoid these disadvantages, NCs have been proposed and applied as a luminescent species in a passive photon converting layer to modify the solar spectrum before the light enters the photovoltaic device. Photon conversion processes, including up-conversion, down-conversion, and down-shifting, have been observed in various colloidal NC samples and have great potential to enhance photovoltaic performance when applied to the existing single-junction solar cells or narrow-band molecular-based devices.

KangFuXinYe (KFX), the ethanol extract of the dried whole body of Periplaneta americana, is a well-known important Chinese medicine preparation that has been used to treat digestive diseases such as gastric ulcers for many years in China. However, its therapeutic effect and mechanism are not yet well understood. Thus, the aim of this study was to investigate the gastro-protective effects of KangFuXinYe (KFX) in indomethacin-induced gastric damage. Rats were randomly divided into six groups as follows: control, treated with indomethacin (35 mg·kg-1), different dosages of KFX (2.57, 5.14 and 10.28 mL·kg-1, respectively) plus indomethacin, and sucralfate (1.71 mL·kg-1) plus indomethacin. After treatment, rat serum, stomach and gastric homogenates were collected for biochemical tests and examination of histopathology firstly. Rat serum was further used for metabolomics analysis to research possible mechanisms. Our results showed that KFX treatment alleviated indomethacin-induced histopathologic damage in rat gastric mucosa. Meanwhile, its treatment significantly increased cyclooxygenase-1 (COX-1), prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) and epidermal growth factor (EGF) levels in rat serum and gastric mucosa. Moreover, KFX decreased cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) levels. Nine metabolites were identified which intensities significantly changed in gastric damage rats, including 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid, indoxylsulfuric acid, indolelactic acid, 4-hydroxyindole, pantothenic acid, isobutyryl carnitine, 3-methyl-2-oxovaleric acid, sphingosine 1-phosphate, and indometacin. These metabolic deviations came to closer to normal levels after KFX intervention. The results indicate that KFX (10.28 mL·kg-1) exerts protective effects on indomethacin-induced gastric damage by possible mechanisms of action (regulating tryptophan metabolism, protecting the mitochondria, and adjusting lipid metabolism, and reducing excessive indomethacin).

We demonstrate the fabrication and characterization of photonic-crystal distributed-feedback quantum cascade laser emitting at 4.7 microm. The tilted rectangular-lattice PCDFB structure was defined using a multi-exposure of two-beam holographic lithography. The devices exhibit the near-diffraction-limited beam emission with the full width at half maximum of the far-field divergence angles about 4.5 degrees and 2.5 degrees for stripe widths of 55 microm and 95 microm, respectively. Single-mode emission with a side mode suppression ratio of approximately 20 dB is achieved in the temperature range (80-210 K). The single-facet output power is above 1 W for a 95 microm x 2.5 mm laser bar at 85 K in pulsed operation.

OBJECTIVE: To study the optimum paper-roast conditions of Radix Vladimiriae. METHODS: The contents of naphtha and costunolide and dehydrcostuslactone were used as estimated indexes. The paper-roast process of Radix Vladimiriae was studied by orthogonal design. RESULTS: The optimum condition was adding moderate water and marinates firstly, after getting rid of the water and experimenting 6 hours' closed lay, cutting Radix Vladimiriae into slices with 10 centimeters and drying under natural condition. One layer paper by one layer Radix Vladimiriae slice roasted 2 hours at 120 degrees C. CONCLUSION: The paper-roast process is stable, controllable and can provide referenced foundation for the production of paper-roast Radix Vladimiriae.

In this paper, an anomalous spectral data of distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) quantum cascade lasers (QCLs) emitting around 7.6 µm is presented. The two-section DBR lasers, consisting of a gain section and an unpumped Bragg reflector, display an output power above 0.6 W in continuous wave (CW) mode at room temperature. The anomalous spectral data is defined as a longitudinal mode which moves toward shorter wavelengths with increasing temperature or injection current, which is unexpected. Although the longer wavelength modes are expected to start lasing when raising device temperature or injection current, occasional mode hops to a shorter wavelength are seen. These anomalous mode transitions are explained by means of modal analysis. The thermal-induced change of the refractive index implied by an increase in the temperature or injection current yields nearly periodic transitions between cavity modes.

High-power, low-threshold stable single-mode operation buried distributed feedback quantum cascade laser by incorporating sampled grating emitting at λ ~ 4.87 µm is demonstrated. The high continuous wave (CW) output power of 948 mW and 649 mW for a 6-mm and 4-mm cavity length is obtained at 20 °C, respectively, which benefits from the optimized optical field distribution of sampled grating. The single-mode yields of the devices are obviously enhanced by controlling cleaved positions of the two end facets precisely. As a result, stable single-mode emission and mode tuning linearly without any mode hopping of devices are obtained under the different heat sink temperatures or high injection currents.

AIMS: To investigate the influence of three single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in exon 12 (C1236T), exon 21 (G2677T/A) and exon 26 (C3435T) of MDR1 gene on the absorption of valacyclovir after a single oral administration in the Chinese Han ethnic population. METHODS: Two hundred healthy Chinese subjects were genotyped for the SNPs of C1236T, G2677T/A and C3435T in the MDR1 gene using allele-specific polymerase chain reaction. Linkage disequilibrium (LD) was analysed. Twenty-four subjects derived from a large random sample (n = 200) received a single oral dose of 600 mg valacyclovir. Plasma concentrations of acyclovir were determined up to 14 h after administration to obtain a pharmacokinetic profile. RESULTS: LD existed between G2677T/A in exon 21 and C3435T in exon 26 (P < 0.001), between C1236T in exon 12 and C3435T (P < 0.001), but not between C1236T and G2677T/A (P > 0.05). C(max), AUC(0-1.5 h) and AUC(0-infinity) were used as indices of valacyclovir absorption. AUC(0-infinity) for the 2677TA genotype was 17.45 +/- 2.40 microg x h/ml, which was much higher compared with the 2677GG, GA and TT genotypes of 10.44 +/- 1.00, 11.84 +/- 2.83, 11.34 +/- 2.32 microg x h/ml, respectively (P < 0.05). Similarly, a statistically significant difference of AUC(0-infinity) was also observed for different linked genotypes at position 2677 vs. 3435, and 1236 vs. 3435 (P < 0.05). However, there was no significant difference in valacyclovir absorptive pharmacokinetics between carriers and noncarriers of different haplotypes (P > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Three SNPs of MDR1 gene did not influence the absorption of a single oral dose of 600 mg valacyclovir in healthy Chinese Han ethnic subjects.
