RESUMEN

Upgrading thermosetting polymer waste and harvesting unwanted electromagnetic energy are of great significance in solving environmental pollution and energy shortage problems. Herein, inspired by the glass-blowing art, a spontaneous, controllable, and scalable strategy is proposed to prepare hollow carbon materials by inner blowing and outside blocking. Specifically, hierarchically neuron-like hollow carbon materials (HCMSs) with various sizes are fabricated from melamine-formaldehyde sponge (MS) waste. Benefiting from the synergistic of the hollow "cell body" and the connected "protrusions" networks, HCMSs reveal superior electromagnetic absorption performance with a strong reflection loss of -54.9 dB, electromagnetic-heat conversion ability with a high conversion efficiency of 34.4%, and efficient energy storage performance in supercapacitor. Furthermore, a multifunctional device integrating electromagnetic-heat-electrical energy conversion is designed, and its feasibility is proved by experiments and theoretical calculations. The integrated device reveals an output voltage of 34.5 mV and a maximum output power of 0.89 µW with electromagnetic radiation for 60 s. This work provides a novel solution to recycle polymer waste, electromagnetic energy, and unwanted thermal energy.

We investigate the time-dependent behaviour of the energy current between a quantum spin chain and its surrounding non-Markovian and finite temperature baths, together with its relationship to the coherence dynamics of the system. To be specific, both the system and the baths are assumed to be initially in thermal equilibrium at temperature Ts and Tb, respectively. This model plays a fundamental role in study of quantum system evolution towards thermal equilibrium in an open system. The non-Markovian quantum state diffusion (NMQSD) equation approach is used to calculate the dynamics of the spin chain. The effects of non-Markovianity, temperature difference and system-bath interaction strength on the energy current and the corresponding coherence in cold and warm baths are analyzed, respectively. We show that the strong non-Markovianity, weak system-bath interaction and low temperature difference will help to maintain the system coherence and correspond to a weaker energy current. Interestingly, the warm baths destroy the coherence while the cold baths help to build coherence. Furthermore, the effects of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction and the external magnetic field on the energy current and coherence are analyzed. Both energy current and coherence will change due to the increase of the system energy induced by the DM interaction and magnetic field. Significantly, the minimal coherence corresponds to the critical magnetic field which causes the first order phase transition.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Recently, PINPOINT, a novel laparoscopic fusion indocyanine green fluorescence imaging (IGFI) system has become available for laparoscopic liver resection. This study aims to characterize fluorescence patterns of intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC) using the negative counterstaining method in laparoscopic anatomical hepatectomies of ICC. METHODS: Eleven consecutive patients, diagnosed with intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma and underwent laparoscopic liver resection between April 2017 and December 2018, were retrospectively reviewed. A laparoscopic IGFI navigation system was used to characterize fluorescence patterns of ICC with intraoperative liver segment demarcation by means of negative counterstaining. RESULTS: Fusion IGFI of ICC was successfully obtained from all 11 patients from the surgical specimens. The fluorescence patterns of ICC can be categorized into rim-type fluorescence and segmental fluorescence, depending on tumor growth. In eight patients, indocyanine green fluorescence imaging was used to identify the hepatic lobes or segments by negative counterstaining. In six cases, a valid and persistent demarcation was achieved intraoperatively. CONCLUSION: Laparoscopic IGFI system could identify different types of ICC lesions and may facilitate real-time navigation for laparoscopic anatomic liver resection of ICC.

The precise molecular mechanisms leading to disturbance of Ca(2+)/calmodulin-dependent intracellular signalling in cardiac hypertrophy remains unclear. As an endogenous calmodulin regulator protein, the pathophysiology role of PEP-19 during cardiac hypertrophy was investigated in the present study. We here demonstrated that PEP-19 protein levels are significantly elevated in the aortic banding model in vivo and angiotensin II-induced cardiomyocyte hypertrophy in vitro. Consistent with inhibitory actions of PEP-19 on cardiomyocyte hypertrophy, induction of CaMKII and calcineurin activation as well as hypertrophy-related genes including atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) and brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) was significantly inhibited by PEP-19 transfection. Moreover, PEP-19 partially ameliorates angiotensin II-induced elevation of phospho-phospholamban (Thr-17) and sarcoplasmic reticulum Ca(2+) release in cardiomyocytes. Together, our results suggest that PEP-19 attenuates angiotensin II-induced cardiomyocyte hypertrophy via suppressing the disturbance of CaMKII and calcineurin signaling.

The soil ecological stoichiometric characteristics of different agricultural land use types have a certain indicator function for characterizing the level of soil nutrient supply and are of great significance to the management of nutrient resources in farmland ecosystems. In order to reveal the soil carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and phosphorus (P) contents and their ecological stoichiometric characteristics in different vegetable fields and orchard agricultural land use types, this study took vegetable fields (taro field and jicama field) and orchards (citrus tree orchard, watermelon field, and pear tree orchard) as the research objects in the coastal area of Fuzhou City. The contents of soil C, N, and P and their ecological stoichiometric characteristics in different vegetable fields and orchard agricultural land uses were measured and analyzed. The soil C and N contents were in the order of orchard>vegetable field (P<0.05). The C content in the citrus tree orchard was the highest (4.44 g·kg-1), and the N content in the watermelon field was the highest (1.46 g·kg-1). The soil P content was vegetable field>orchard (P<0.05), and the jicama field had the highest P content (0.19 g·kg-1). The soil carbon and nitrogen ratio (C/N), carbon and phosphorus ratio (C/P), and nitrogen and phosphorus ratio (N/P) were orchard>vegetable field (P<0.05). Among them, the citrus tree orchard had the highest C/N (7.40) and C/P (61.43), and the watermelon field had the highest N/P (10.27). Soil N content was significantly and negatively correlated with bulk density and conductivity (r=-0.49, r=-0.28, P<0.05), and there was a significant and positive correlation with soil water content (r=0.61, P<0.05). C/P and C/N were significantly and positively correlated with SOM (r=0.71, r=0.64, P<0.01). In the process of crop planting and management in the coastal area of Fuzhou City, it is necessary to reasonably add nitrogen fertilizer to compensate for the N limitation, and slow-release nitrogen fertilizer is better for promoting the sustainable supply of nitrogen nutrients in the growth and development of crops.

Circular RNAs (circRNAs) are a class of noncoding RNAs that are widely expressed in cancer tissues and play a pro- or anticancer role in modulating cancer progression. This work is aimed to probe the biological role of circ_0000317 in colorectal cancer (CRC) and its underlying mechanism. Circ_0000317 was selected from the circRNA microarray datasets (GSE121895). Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction was utilized to examine circ_0000317, microRNA (miR)-520g, and homeobox D10 (HOXD10) mRNA expression in CRC. Cell Counting Kit-8 and Transwell experiments were conducted to examine the effects of circ_0000317 on proliferation, migration, and invasion of CRC cells. Bioinformatic analysis and dual-luciferase reporter gene experiments were implemented to predict and validate the targeting relationship between circ_0000317 and miR-520g, miR-520g, and HOXD10. Western blot was employed to examine HOXD10 expression at protein level in CRC cells. Circ_0000317 and HOXD10 mRNA expression were unveiled to be down-modulated and miR-520g expression was up-modulated in CRC. Functionally, circ_0000317 overexpression repressed CRC cell proliferation, migration, and invasion. Mechanistically, miR-520g was a direct target of circ_0000317 and miR-520g specifically modulated HOXD10 expression. Furthermore, miR-520g mimics partially counteracted the suppressing effect of circ_0000317 on malignant phenotype of CRC cells. Circ_0000317 represses CRC progression by targeting miR-520g and modulating HOXD10 expression. Hence, circ_0000317 may be a promising diagnostic biomarker and a therapeutic target for CRC.

5-fluorouracil (5-FU) has been used in the treatment of colorectal cancer for >50 years. However, drug resistance remains an obstacle in the application of 5-FU-based chemotherapy. Bufalin, a type of steroid with anti-tumor activity, may be purified from the skin and parotid venom glands of toads. In order to improve the anti-tumor effect of 5-FU, the present study examined the combined effects of bufalin with 5-FU on human colorectal cancer HCT116 cells. Following treatment, cell proliferation was quantified using MTT assay and apoptotic cell percentage was assessed by flow cytometry. The apoptosis-associated protein expression was evaluated by western blotting. It was observed that bufalin enhanced the cytotoxicity of 5-FU in HCT116 cells via the induction of the mitochondrial apoptotic pathway. Additionally, bufalin combined with 5-FU reduced the expression levels of anti-apoptotic proteins, such as Mcl-1, XIAP and Bcl-2 and upregulated the levels of the pro-apoptotic proteins, Bax and Bad. To verify the role of Bax, RNA interference was used to knock-down Bax. It was determined that the synergistic effect between 5-FU and bufalin was diminished following the silencing of Bax. In summary, bufalin in combination with 5-FU may induce a higher level of apoptosis compared with monotherapy, and the combination mat be a potential therapeutic strategy for the treatment of colorectal cancer.
