RESUMEN

This study proposes a novel instantaneous total energy method to perform an activity analysis of ground fissures deformation, which is calculated by integrating the extreme-point symmetric mode decomposition (ESMD) method and kinetic energy based on the time-series displacement acquired by shape acceleration array (SAA) sensors. The proposed method is tested on the Xiwang Road fissure in Beijing, China. First, to fully monitor the hanging wall and footwall of the monitored ground fissure, a 4 m-long SAA in the vertical direction and an 8 m-long SAA in the horizontal direction were embedded in a ground fissure to obtain an accurate time-series displacement with an accuracy of ±1.5 mm/32 m and a displacement acquisition frequency of once an hour. Second, to improve the accuracy of the activity analysis, the ESMD method and Spearman's rho are applied to perform signal denoising of the original time-series displacement obtained by the SAA sensors. Finally, the instantaneous total energy is obtained to analyze the activity of the monitored ground fissure. The results demonstrate that the proposed method is more reliable to reflect the activity of a monitored ground fissure compared to the time-series displacement.

RESUMEN

With the rapid development of material science, more and more workpieces, especially workpieces with complex curved surfaces, are being made of composite materials. Robotic non-destructive testing (NDT) systems for complex curved surface composite material parts are being used more and more. Despite the emergence of such flexible NDT systems, the detection of semi-enclosed parts is also a challenge for robotic NDT systems. In order to overcome the problem, this paper establishes an NDT solution for semi-enclosed workpieces based on a dual-robot system of synchronous motion, in which an extension arm is installed on one of the robots and presents a trajectory planning method that always ensures the extension arm is parallel to the rotary axis of a semi-enclosed workpiece and that the ultrasonic probes are perpendicular to the workpiece surface. Trajectory analysis experiments and ultrasonic NDT experiments utilizing the optimal water path distance determined by simulation result of multi-Gaussian beam model for two types of semi-enclosed workpieces are performed with the dual-robot NDT system. Experimental results prove that the dual-robot NDT scheme functions well and the planned trajectories are correct. All the hole-shaped artificial defects with diameters ≥3 mm are detected by using 2.25 MHz ultrasonic probes through the transmission testing method. Vivid 3D C-scan image of a small diameter cylindrical workpiece based on the testing result is provided for convenience of observation.

RESUMEN

Akkermansia muciniphila can produce various mucin-degrading proteins. However, the functional characteristics of these proteins and their role in mucin degradation are unclear. Of the predicted protein-coding genes, Amuc_1434, which encodes for a hypothetical protein, is the focus in this study. A recombinant enzyme Amuc_1434 containing the 6× His-tag produced in Escherichia coli (hereinafter termed Amuc_1434*) was isolated to homogeneity and biochemically characterised. Results showed that the enzyme can hydrolyse hemoglobin with an activity of 17.21 U/µg. The optimal pH and temperature for hemoglobin hydrolysis of Amuc_1434* were found to be around 8.0 and 40 °C, respectively. Amuc_1434* is identified as a member of the aspartic protease family through the action of inhibitor pepstatin A. Amuc_1434* promotes the adhesion of colon cancer cell line LS174T, which can highly express Muc2. Significantly Amuc_1434* can degrade Muc2 of colon cancer cells. Amuc_1434 is mainly located in the colon of BALB/c mice. These results suggest that the presence of Amuc_1434 from Akkermansia muciniphila may be correlated with the restoration of gut barrier function by decreasing mucus layer thickness.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Vertebral-basilar artery dissecting aneurysms (VADAs) are an uncommon phenomenon in all fields of cerebrovascular disease. The flow diverter (FD) can be used as an endoluminal reconstruction device that promotes neointima formation at the aneurysmal neck and preserves the parent artery. To date, imaging examinations such as CT angiography, MR angiography, and DSA are the main methods used to evaluate the vasculature of patients. However, none of these imaging methods can reveal the situation of neointima formation, which is of great importance in evaluating occlusion of VADAs, especially those treated with a FD. METHODS: Three patients were included in the study from August 2018 to January 2019. All patients underwent preprocedural, postprocedural, and follow-up evaluations with high resolution MRI, DSA, and optical coherence tomography (OCT), as well as the formation of intima on the surface of the scaffold at the 6 month follow-up. RESULTS: Preprocedural, postoperative, and follow-up high resolution MRI, DSA, and OCT of all three cases successfully evaluated occlusion of the VADAs and occurrence of in stent stenosis from different views of intravascular angiography and neointima formation. CONCLUSIONS: OCT was feasible and useful to further evaluate VADAs treated with FD from a near pathological perspective, which may contribute toward guiding the duration of antiplatelet medication and early intervention of in stent stenosis.

RESUMEN

Giant sequoias (Sequoiadendron giganteum) are some of the UK's largest trees, despite only being introduced in the mid-nineteenth century. There are an estimated half a million giant sequoias and closely related coastal redwoods (Sequoia sempervirens) in the UK. Given the recent interest in planting more trees, partly due to their carbon sequestration potential and also their undoubted public appeal, an understanding of their growth capability is important. However, little is known about their growth and carbon uptake under UK conditions. Here, we focus on S. giganteum and use three-dimensional terrestrial laser scanning to perform detailed structural measurements of 97 individuals at three sites covering a range of different conditions, to estimate aboveground biomass (AGB) and annual biomass accumulation rates. We show that UK-grown S. giganteum can sequester carbon at a rate of 85 kg yr-1, varying with climate, management and age. We develop new UK-specific allometric models for S. giganteum that fit the observed AGB with r 2 > 0.93 and bias < 2% and can be used to estimate S. giganteum biomass more generally. This study provides the first estimate of the growth and carbon sequestration of UK open-grown S. giganteum and provides a baseline for estimating their longer-term carbon sequestration capacity.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: Accurate nidus segmentation and quantification have long been challenging but important tasks in the clinical management of Cerebral Arteriovenous Malformation (CAVM). However, there are still dilemmas in nidus segmentation, such as difficulty defining the demarcation of the nidus, observer-dependent variation and time consumption. The aim of this study isto develop an artificial intelligence model to automatically segment the nidus on Time-Of-Flight Magnetic Resonance Angiography (TOF-MRA) images. METHODS: A total of 92patients with CAVM who underwent both TOF-MRA and DSA examinations were enrolled. Two neurosurgeonsmanually segmented the nidusonTOF-MRA images, which were regarded as theground-truth reference. AU-Net-basedAImodelwascreatedfor automatic nidus detectionand segmentationonTOF-MRA images. RESULTS: The meannidus volumes of the AI segmentationmodeland the ground truthwere 5.427 ± 4.996 and 4.824 ± 4.567 mL,respectively. The meandifference in the nidus volume between the two groups was0.603 ± 1.514 mL,which wasnot statisticallysignificant (P = 0.693). The DSC,precision and recallofthe testset were 0.754 ± 0.074, 0.713 ± 0.102 and 0.816 ± 0.098, respectively. The linear correlation coefficient of the nidus volume betweenthesetwo groupswas 0.988, p < 0.001. CONCLUSION: The performance of the AI segmentationmodel is moderate consistent with that of manual segmentation. This AI model has great potential in clinical settings, such as preoperative planning, treatment efficacy evaluation, riskstratification and follow-up.

RESUMEN

Vertebrobasilar dolichoectasia (VBD) is a rare type of cerebrovascular disorder with high rates of morbidity and mortality. Due to the distinct pathological characteristics that fragmented internal elastic lamina and multiple dissections, VBD is difficult to treat and cured. Stent-assisted coil embolization is one of the main treatment modalities for such lesions. However, the duration of healing remained questionable, and there were no effective measures for evaluating endothelial coverage. Before complete endothelial coverage, the discontinuation of antiplatelet therapy may lead to fatal in-stent thrombosis; however, continued antiplatelet therapy could also result in bleeding complications. Thus, we present an autopsy case of late in-stent thrombosis due to the discontinuation of antiplatelet therapy and systematically review the literature to provide a reference for endovascular treatment and antiplatelet regimen of VBD.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Ischemic stroke, which often occurs with high morbidity, disability, and mortality, is a main cause of brain disease. In various types of human diseases, it is found that microRNAs (miRNAs) are considered as gene regulators. Increasing studies have proved that fluctuation of miRNAs, in the pathologies of ischemic stroke, plays a vital role. However, the accurate regulatory mechanism of cerebral ischemic stroke by miRNAs is still unclear. In this research, we investigated the inhibition mechanism of miR-488-3p on neuronal death through targeting vacuolar protein sorting 4B (VPS4B) in cerebral ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury. METHODS: Western blot and qRT-PCR were utilized to detect the miR-488-3p level and VPS4B expression. The cell counting kit-8 (CCK-8) assay was utilized to measure the function of miR-488-3p in cell death induced by oxygen glucose deprivation/reoxygenation (OGD/R). After middle cerebral artery occlusion/reperfusion (MCAO/R), the impact of miR-488-3p on infarct volume in mouse brain was assessed. The targets of miR-488-3p were confirmed by luciferase analysis and bioinformatics software. RESULTS: The miR-488-3p level remarkably reduced in primary neuronal cells administrated with OGD/R. Similarly, it also decreased in the mouse brain administrated with MCAO/R. Additionally, the up-regulation of miR-488-3p expression suppressed the death of neuronal cells and restrained ischemic brain infarction in ischemia-stroked mice. Besides, the results showed that VPS4B, which could be inhibited by miR-488-3p, was a direct target of miR-488-3p. This research revealed that the inhibition of VPS4B protected the neuronal cells in ischemic stroke both in vitro as well as in vivo. Meanwhile, this inhibition strengthened positive impact generated by miR-488-3p on ischemic injury. CONCLUSION: Overall, miR-488-3p played a critical role on neuroprotective function via reducing VPS4B protein level. These results performed a new underlying curative target for the treatment of cerebral ischemic stroke.

RESUMEN

Riverine sediment can reconstruct the history of organic pollution loads and can provide reliable temporal information for pesticide metabolite dynamics in watershed. Sediment core samples were collected from two riverine sections of a cold watershed base in the presence land use change under agricultural development, and the vertical concentrations of four pesticides (atrazine, prometryn, isoprothiolane, and oxadiazon) and two atrazine metabolites (deisopropyl-atrazine and deethyl-atrazine) were determined by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The presence of pesticides and metabolites was detected at different depths (11-17 cm) at 1-cm intervals along the two sediment cores, and the flux was calculated with a constant rate of supply model based on the observed concentrations and 210Pb isotope radioactivity chronology. By comparing the concentrations and fluxes of pesticides between the two sediment sections, significant differences in accumulation under different land-use patterns were found. Redundancy analysis further indicated that temporal watershed farmland variance was the dominant factor for pesticide loading. The lower concentration of atrazine and the higher concentration of the other pesticides in the estuarine sediment was closely related to the decreasing upland in the upstream area and the increase in paddy fields in the downstream area. The analysis of atrazine and the metabolites indicated that atrazine is more likely degraded to deethyl-atrazine and the metabolites have similar migration processes in the sediments, which can easily migrate downward. Moreover, the ratio of metabolites to atrazine showed that atrazine degradation was intensive during the transport process, but the metabolites efficiency was lower in this area due to the cold temperature. The results provide insights for the management of pesticide pollution control in watersheds and the potential effects of low temperature on the degradation of pesticides.

RESUMEN

Deep desulfurization of fossil fuels has become urgently required because of the serious pollution by the large-scale use of fossil fuels. In this study, [PrSO3HMIm]HSO4@MIL-100(Fe) was synthesized by wet-impregnation of the ionic liquid (IL) of [PrSO3HMIm]HSO4 on MIL-100(Fe). The construction of [PrSO3HMIm]HSO4@MIL-100(Fe) was then confirmed by X-ray powder diffraction, N2 adsorption-desorption experiments, infrared spectroscopy and elemental analysis, and then applied in the oxidative desulfurization of model fuels. In comparison with the corresponding IL, [PrSO3HMIm]HSO4@MIL-100(Fe) showed an enhanced performance in the desulfurization rate of model fuels due to the increase of the mass transfer rate. Under the optimized conditions (oxidant to sulphur ratio = 25, oil to acetonitrile ratio = 1, and temperature = 60 °C), a sulphur removal rate of 99.3% was observed (initial sulphur concentration = 50 ppm). The sulphur removal of three sulphur compounds by catalytic oxidation and extraction followed the order of dibenzothiophene (DBT) > thiophene (T) > benzothiophene (BT).

RESUMEN

The formation and transportation processes of non-point source (NPS) pollution varied among the studied watersheds in the Northeastern China, so we hypothesized that the driving force behind NPS pollution followed the spatial scale effect. With a watershed outlet sedimentary flux analysis and a distributed NPS pollution loading model, we investigated the temporal dynamics of NPS and the differences in driving forces. Sediment core samples were collected from two adjacent watersheds, the smaller Abujiao watershed and the larger Naoli watershed. The natural climatic conditions, long-term variations in the distribution of land use, soil properties and tillage practices were the same in the two watersheds. The vertical distributions of total nitrogen, total phosphorus, Zn and As at 1-cm intervals in the section showed clear differences between the watersheds. There were higher concentrations of total nitrogen and total phosphorus in the larger watershed, but the heavy metals were more concentrated in the smaller watershed. Lead-210 (210Pb) analyses and the constant rate of supply model provided a dated sedimentary flux, which was correlated with the corresponding yearly loading of NPS total nitrogen and total phosphorus in the two watersheds. The total phosphorus showed a stable relationship in both watersheds with an R2 value that ranged from 0.503 to 0.682. A rose figure comparison also demonstrated that the pollutant flux in the sediment was very different in the two watersheds, which had similar territorial conditions and different hydrological patterns. Redundancy analysis further indicated that expanding paddy areas had a large impact on the sedimentary flux of nitrogen and phosphorus in the smaller watershed, but precipitation had a direct impact on NPS loading in the larger watershed. We concluded that the spatial scale effect affected the NPS pollution via the transport processes in the waterway, which was mainly influenced by branch length and drainage density.

RESUMEN

Photosynthetic characteristics of four Porphyra yezoensis Ueda [a taxonomic synonym of Pyropia yezoensis (Ueda) M. S. Hwang et H. G. Choi] strains in conchocelis phase were investigated and compared with one wildtype of P. yezoensis and two strains of Porphyra haitanensis T. J. Chang et B. F. Zheng [a taxonomic synonym of Pyropia haitanensis (T. J. Chang et B. F. Zheng) N. Kikuchi et M. Miyata]. Results showed that experimental strains had higher contents of chl a and carotenoids, but a lower content of total phycobiliproteins than the wildtype. Meanwhile, photochemical efficiency of PSII was measured using pulse amplitude modulation (PAM) fluorometry technology. The value of PSII photosynthetic parameters of P. yezoensis strains were all higher than the wild strain, and the maximal quantum yields (Fv /Fm ), effective quantum yields Y(II), and relative photosynthetic electron transport rates (rETR) of P. haitanensis were higher than those of P. yezoensis. The present study verified the possibility of selective breeding of P. yezoensis using the filamentous sporophyte instead of the gametophytic thallus, the advantages being (i) nonrequirement of control of life cycle and (ii) direct and rapid cultivar improvement by artificial selection. We consider the method to be a promising technique for selective breeding of P. yezoensis cultivars.
