RESUMEN

A large degree of polarization (ρ) of photoluminescence (PL) approximate to 1 is obtained in each nonpolar a-plane MgxZn1-xO layer grown by plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) with x=0.01, 0.03, and 0.10, respectively. Anisotropic in-plane strains are selectively introduced by using foreign substrates and doping with different Mg contents, which strongly modify the valence band structures, leading to anisotropic optical properties. A polarized Raman measurement shows that anisotropic in-plane strains along the y and z axes increase with the increasing Mg contents. Polarized PL spectra show that ρ gradually increases to 0.97 with decreasing in-plane strains, resulting from an increasing difference in transition energy (ΔE) between E⊥c and E‖c caused by a lift of the degeneracy of valence band structures. The obtained highly polarized emission is close to linear polarized light, which is desirable in the backlighting of liquid crystal displays.

RESUMEN

We have demonstrated that photoluminescence (PL) is a non-damaging and powerful tool for the characterization of heavily-doped semiconductor nanostructures such as n-ZnO nanowires. The PL shows a redshift and a Gaussian-shaped low-energy wing, indicating a broadening mechanism governed by the impurity band. The electron concentration can be estimated from the PL linewidth.

RESUMEN

The valence band offsets (ΔEV) of Zn(1-x)Mg(x)O/ZnO heterojunctions grown by plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy were measured by photoelectron spectroscopy. From the directly obtained ΔEV values, the related conduction band offsets (ΔEC) were deduced. All the Zn(1-x)Mg(x)O/ZnO heterojunctions exhibit a type-I band alignment with the ΔEC/ΔEV estimated to be 1.5, 1.8, 2.0 for x = 0.10, 0.15 and 0.20, respectively. The band offsets of Zn(1-x)Mg(x)O/ZnO heterojunctions depend on Mg composition. The accurate determination of energy band alignment of Zn(1-x)Mg(x)O/ZnO is helpful for designing ZnO based optoelectronic devices.

RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: Bullous systemic lupus erythematosus (BSLE) is a rare form of subcutaneous blistering lupus erythematosus (SLE). There is currently no effective treatment for BSLE. However, here, we present the first report of the successful treatment of refractory BSLE with belimumab in a 16-year-old girl. CASE PRESENTATION: A 16-year-old girl with BSLE had undergone different treatment options, with no significant improvement. Since B-lymphocyte stimulator plays an important role in the pathophysiology of SLE, belimumab was administered and showed remarkable effects for the first time in this patient with both SLE and BSLE. The patient's skin lesions improved steadily over the course of three weeks and completely disappeared in 30 days. In addition, no sign of recurrence of BSLE was observed over the 9-month follow-up period. CONCLUSIONS: To our knowledge, this is the first report of the successful short-term therapy of refractory BSLE/SLE overlap syndrome with belimumab in a pediatric patient. Although the use of belimumab resulted in excellent.

RESUMEN

Relying on combined electron-beam lithography and lift-off methods Au/Ti bilayer electrical contacts were attached to individual ZnO nanowires (NWs) that were grown by a vapor phase deposition method. Reliable Schottky-type as well as ohmic contacts were obtained depending on whether or not an ion milling process was used. The response of the ZnO NWs to ultraviolet light was found to be sensitive to the type of contacts. The intrinsic electronic properties of the ZnO NWs were studied in a field-effect transistor configuration. The transfer characteristics, including gate threshold voltage, hysteresis and operational mode, were demonstrated to unexpectedly respond to visible light. The origin of this effect could be accounted for by the presence of point defects in the ZnO NWs.

RESUMEN

ZnO-Co nanocomposite thin films are synthesized by combination of pulsed laser deposition of ZnO and Co ion implantation. Both superparamagnetism and relaxor ferroelectricity as well as magnetoelectric coupling in the nanocomposites have been demonstrated. The unexpected relaxor ferroelectricity is believed to be the result of the local lattice distortion induced by the incorporation of the Co nanoparticles. Magnetoelectric coupling can be attributed to the interaction between the electric dipole moments and the magnetic moments, which are both induced by the incorporation of Co. The introduced ZnO-Co nanocomposite thin films are different from conventional strain-mediated multiferroic composites.

RESUMEN

Mechanical properties of self-scrolling binormal nanohelices with a rectangular cross-section are investigated under uniaxial tensile and compressive loads using nanorobotic manipulation and Cosserat curve theory. Stretching experiments demonstrate that small-pitch nanohelices have an exceptionally large linear elasticity region and excellent mechanical stability, which are attributed to their structural flexibility based on an analytical model. In comparison between helices with a circular, square and rectangular cross-section, modeling results indicate that, while the binormal helical structure is stretched with a large strain, the stress on the material remains low. This is of particular significance for such applications as elastic components in micro-/nanoelectromechanical systems (MEMS/NEMS). The mechanical instability of a self-scrolling nanohelix under compressive load is also investigated, and the low critical load for buckling suggests that the self-scrolling nanohelices are more suitable for extension springs in MEMS/NEMS.

RESUMEN

Transparent conducting ZnO films have been prepared by modified S-gun reactive dc magnetron sputtering using an indium doped Zn target. Films with a resistivity of 1.08 x 10(-3) Omega cm and average transmittance of over 80% in the visible region were obtained. The influence of indium content at the surface of Zn target on the resistivity and transmittance of ZnO films was investigated. Optical properties of ZnO films in the 0.2-2.5-microm range were modeled by the Drude theory of free electrons. The reflectance of ZnO films in the 2.5-26.0-microm region was calculated.

RESUMEN

Rhesus macaques and stump-tailed macaques are sympatric in western Yunnan (China), coexisting or occupying habitats that show little difference. This paper tests hypotheses based on theoretical expectation from the differing biomechanical demands of terrestrial and arboreal quadrupedalism in stump-tailed macaques and rhesus macaques, respectively. Individuals of these two macaque taxa were markedly separated by the first two principal components and discriminant analyses based on 18 variables of the upper limb. The rhesus macaques appear to be more adapted for arboreal quadruped habits because of elongation of the clavicle and forearm, a larger humeral head and greater midshaft sagittal diameters of the radius and ulna.

RESUMEN

In this paper, we report the findings of a comparative study of the elbow joints of five species of macaque that inhabit China: Macaca assamensis, M. arctoides, M. mulatta, M. thibetana and M. nemestrina. Results of multivariate analyses of size-related variables and indices of the elbow joint suggested that the breadths of the ventral aspect of the trochlea and of the medial epicondyle of the humerus as well as indices describing the head of the radius are important factors for discriminating these species. The elbow joint of M. arctoides was most similar to that of M. thibetana, no doubt reflecting recency of common ancestry and similarity in terrestrial locomotion. The structures of the elbow joints in M. nemestrina and M. assamensis seemed more adapted to arboreal quadrupedalism. The elbow joint of M. mulatta, however, appears intermediate between the most terrestrial and the most arboreal forms.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to determine whether human papillomavirus (HPV) infections are involved in the development of papillomatosis lesions of the lower female genital tract. METHODS: A total of 616 biopsy specimens of genital papillomatous lesions (307 nodular and 309 papular types) from 598 patients were anaylyzed for the presence of HPV DNA sequences by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). These specimens were also examined by histopathological assessment for characteristic HPV-associated cytological changes, by immunohistochemical staining for HPV-associated antigen, and by electron microscopy for the presence of virions. RESULTS: HPV DNA sequences were found in 97.9% (140 of 143 cases) and 1.1% (1 of 91 cases) of the nodular and papular papillomatosis cases tested, respectively. In 18 patients who had both types of papillomatosis lesions, HPV DNA was invariably found only in nodular tissues. HPV-associated antigen, koilocytosis, and virions were found in 53.6% (98 of 183 cases), 70.5% (129 of 183 cases), and 5.9% (5 of 85 cases) of nodular papillomatosis lesions tested, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: These data suggest that nodular papillomatosis was closely associated with HPV infection, but that papular papillomatosis of the lower female genital tract may have an etiology other than HPV infection.
