RESUMEN

Poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL)-incorporated lignin-chitosan biomass-based nanocomposite porous scaffolds have been effectively prepared by templating oil-in-water Pickering high internal phase emulsions (HIPEs). PCL is dissolved in oil and chitosan and lignin nanoparticles originate in water. The continuous phase of the emulsions is gelled by cross-linking of chitosan with genipin and then freeze-dried to obtain porous scaffolds. The resulting scaffolds display interconnected and tunable pore structures. An increase in PCL content increases the mechanical strength and greatly reduces the water absorption capacity of the scaffolds. Scaffolds loaded with the anti-bacterial drug enrofloxacin show a slow drug release profile, adjustable release rate, and favorable long-term anti-bacterial activity. Moreover, Pickering emulsion templates with suitable viscosity are used as 3D printing inks to construct porous scaffolds with personalized geometry. The results imply that the simplicity and versatility of the technique of combining freeze-drying with Pickering HIPE templates is a promising approach to fabricate hydrophobic biopolymer-incorporated biomass-based nanocomposite porous scaffolds for biomedical applications.

RESUMEN

Public health safety issues have been plaguing the world since the pandemic outbreak of coronavirus disease (COVID-19). However, most personal protective equipments (PPE) do not have antibacterial and anti- toxicity effects. In this work, we designed and prepared a reusable, antibacterial and anti-toxicity Polyacrylonitrile (PAN) based nanofibrous membrane cooperated with Ag/g-C3N4 (Ag-CN), Myoporum.bontioides (M. bontioides) plant extracts and Ag nanoparticles (NPs) by an electrospinning-process. The SEM and TEM characterization revealed the formation of raised, creased or wrinkled areas on the fiber surface caused by the Ag nanoparticles, the rough surface prevented the aerosol particles on the fiber surface from sliding and stagnating, thus providing excellent filtration performance. The PAN/M. bontioides/Ag-CN/Ag nanofibrous membrane could be employed as a photocatalytic bactericidal material, which not only degraded 96.37% of methylene blue within 150 min, but also exhibited the superior bactericidal effect of 98.65 ± 1.49% and 97.8 ± 1.27% against E. coli and S. aureus, respectively, under 3 hs of light exposure. After 3 cycles of sterilization experiments, the PAN/M. bontioides/Ag-CN/Ag nanofibrous membrane maintained an efficient sterilization effect. Molecular docking revealed that the compounds in M. bontioides extracts interacted with neo-coronavirus targets mainly on Mpro and RdRp proteins, and these compounds had the strongest docking energy with Mpro protein, the shortest docking radius, and more binding sites for key amino acids around the viral protein targets, which influenced the replication and transcription process of neo-coronavirus. The PAN/M.bontioides/Ag-CN/Ag nanofibrous membrane also performed significant inhibition of influenza A virus H3N2. The novel nanofiber membrane is expected to be applied to medical masks, which will improve human isolation and protection against viruses.

RESUMEN

Curcumin (Cur), appeared to provide huge potential in biomedical application. However, its therapeutic efficacy was greatly limited as the result of poor solubility and instability. To address these limitations, we create a new type of hollow mesoporous titania nanoparticle (HMTN) to encapsulate Cur. HMTN was decorated with a layer of hydrophilic polyethylenimine (PEI), which controlled the release rate of Cur inside the pore due to its dendritic structure. Combined with the folic acid (FA) mediated targeting effect, the potential multifunctional Cur loaded titania nanoparticle (Cur-FA-PEI-HMTN) showed excellent biocompatibility and bioavailability, as well as the UV-responsive drug release properties. The operating parameters to prepare hollow structure were studied and the Cur-FA-PEI-HMTN nanosystem had been fully characterized by Brunauer-Emmet-Teller, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, transmission electron microscope, thermal gravity analysis, differential thermal analysis, x-ray diffraction, dynamic light scattering and zeta potential. In addition, the hemolytic test, as well as CCK8, flow cytometry, Hoechst 33342 staining experiment, were carried out to confirm the low cytotoxity and high biocompatibility. The confocal microscopy analysis results also revealed the increasing uptake of Cur@FA-PEI-HMTN by MCF-7 cells. The synthesized nanoparticles displayed great potential as drug nanovehicles with high biocompatibility.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Diabetic retinopathy is the most common complication in diabetic patients relates to high expression of VEGF and microaneurysms. Scutellarin (Scu) turned out to be effective against diabetes related vascular endothelial cell dysfunction. However, its clinical applications have been limited by its low bioavailability. In this study, we formulated and characterized a novel intestinal target nanoparticle carrier based on amphiphilic chitosan derivatives (Chit-DC-VB12) loaded with scutellarin to enhance its bioavailability and then evaluated its therapeutic effect in experimental diabetic retinopathy model. RESULTS: Chit-DC-VB12 nanoparticles showed low toxicity toward the human colon adenocarcinoma (Caco-2) cells and zebra fish within concentration of 250 µg/ml, owing to good biocompatibility of chitosan. The scutellarin-loaded Chit-DC-VB12 nanoparticles (Chit-DC-VB12-Scu) were then prepared by self-assembly in aqueous solution. Scanning electron microscopy and dynamic light scattering analysis indicated that the Chit-DC-VB12-Scu nanoparticles were spherical particles in the sizes ranging from 150 to 250 nm. The Chit-DC-VB12-Scu nanoparticles exhibited high permeation in Caco-2 cell, indicated it could be beneficial to be absorbed in humans. We also found that Chit-DC-VB12 nanoparticles had a high cellular uptake. Bioavailability studies were performed in Sprague-Dawley rats, which present the area under the curve of scutellarin of Chit-DC-VB12-Scu was two to threefolds greater than that of free scutellarin alone. Further to assess the therapeutic efficacy of diabetic retinopathy, we showed Chit-DC-VB12-Scu down-regulated central retinal artery resistivity index and the expression of angiogenesis proteins (VEGF, VEGFR2, and vWF) of retinas in type II diabetic rats. CONCLUSIONS: Chit-DC-VB12 nanoparticles loaded with scutellarin have better bioavailability and cellular uptake efficiency than Scu, while Chit-DC-VB12-Scu nanoparticles alleviated the structural disorder of intraretinal neovessels in the retina induced by diabetes, and it also inhibited the retinal neovascularization via down-regulated the expression of angiogenesis proteins. In conclusion, the Chit-DC-VB12 nanoparticles enhanced scutellarin oral delivery efficacy and exhibited potential as small intestinal target promising nano-carriers for treatment of type II diabetes induced-retinopathy.

RESUMEN

Highly transparent silver incorporated titania (Ag/TiO2) composite nanomembranes were fabricated by a simple, reproducible dip-coating process on ceramic substrates. The obtained membrane samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectrometer (EDX), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The photocatalytic activity of the Ag/TiO2 nanomembranes was assessed by the degradation of methylene blue under visible light irradiation. Compared with pure TiO2 nanomembranes, no significant shift in the TiO2 crystal structure was detected after doping with silver ions. The results from the SEM and EDX analyses showed that homogeneous spherical silver nanoparticles were produced and scattered on the surface of the TiO2 nanomembrane that was coated on the surface of the ceramic substrates. The doping with silver ions could effectively improve the photocatalytic activity of TiO2 under visible light irradiation. The Ag/TiO2 composite nanomembrane also exhibited improved hydrophilicity compared to that of a pure TiO2 nanomembrane.

RESUMEN

The efficient visible-light active nanocomposites of {001} facets-exposed TiO2-reduced graphene oxide (RGO) were fabricated by a simple one-step solvothermal approach for application in photocatalytic degradation. The morphology, structure and optical properties of the nanocomposites were well characterized by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. The results indicated that the TiO2 nanoflakes with exposed {001} facets were well-dispersed and contact closely with the surface of graphene sheets via the formation of Ti-O-C bonds. The percentage of the {001} facets which have higher chemistry activity in anatase TiO2 was about 71.3%. The incorporation of RGO with TiO2 increased the light absorption in the whole visible region and displayed a red-shift absorption edge, accelerated the separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs, furthermore, effectively enhanced the photocatalytic activity of TiO2 under the visible light. The efficiency of the system was significantly influenced by the content of RGO. The optimum content of RGO was 5 wt% for the maximum photocatalytic efficiency.

RESUMEN

Near-field direct-writing electrospinning technology can be used to produce ordered micro/nanofiber membrane dressings. The application of this technology can simply realize the control of dressing porosity, compound different functional substances, and adjust their distribution, thus improving the defects of common dressings such as insufficient breathability, poor moisture retention performance, and single function. Herein, a novel multifunctional wound dressing was prepared to utilize near-field direct-writing electrospinning technology, in which calf skin collagen type I (CSC-I) and polycaprolactone (PCL) were used as the composite matrix, Hexafluoroisopropanol (HFIP) as the solvent, and erythromycin (ERY) as an anti-infective drug component. The results show that the micro/nanofiber membranes prepared by near-field direct-writing electrospinning technology can all present a complete mesh structure, excellent thermal stability, and good moisturizing properties. Moreover, the composite fiber membrane loaded with ERY not only had obvious antibacterial properties against E. coli and S. thermophilus but also a better slow-release function of drugs (it is rare to have both in traditional wound dressings). Therefore, this experimental design can provide relevant theories and an experimental foundation for preparing a new type of medical dressing with drug loading and has good guiding significance for the application and promotion of near-field direct-writing electrospinning in medical dressings.

RESUMEN

In this study, a novel Fe-based nanomaterial catalyst (Fe0/FeS) was synthesized via a self-heating process and employed to explore its impact on the formation of humic substances and the mitigation of microplastics. The results reveal that Fe0/FeS exhibited a significant increase in humic acid content (71.01 mg kg-1). Similarly, the formation of humic substances resulted in a higher humification index (4.91). Moreover, the addition of Fe0/FeS accelerated the degradation of microplastics (MPs), resulting in a lower concentration of MPs (9487 particles/kg) compared to the control experiments (22792 particles/kg). Fe0/FeS significantly increased the abundance of medium-sized MPs (50-200 µm) and reduced the abundance of small-sized (10-50 µm) and large-sized MPs (>1000 µm). These results can be attributed to the Fe0/FeS regulating the ▪OH production and specific microorganisms to promote humic substance formation and the degradation of MPs. This study proposes a feasible strategy to improve composting characteristics and reduce contaminants.

RESUMEN

Introduction: Despite the absence of definitive evidence indicating that the cp4-epsps gene and its resultant recombinant proteins have significant harmful effects on either human or animal health, the safety assessment of genetically modified (GM) crops expressing the CP4-EPSPS proteins has been controversial. This study endeavor was aimed at evaluating the potential risks posed by the CP4-EPSPS protein in transgenic crops, thereby contributing to the advancement of risk assessment methodologies in the context of genetically engineered crops. Methods: To ascertain the appropriate daily dosages for oral gavage administration, the expression levels of the CP4-EPSPS protein in a recombinant yeast were quantified. Subsequently, physiological and biochemical analysis, metabolomics, and metagenomic analysis were conducted based on a 90-day Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats feeding experiment, respectively, thereby enhancing the depth and precision of our risk assessment framework. Results: The results from the physiological and biochemical analysis, organ pathological, blood metabolism, gut microbiota, and correlation analysis of metabolites and gut microbiota revealed several biomarkers for further risk assessment. These biomarkers include clinical biochemical indexes such as total bilirubin (TBIL), direct bilirubin (DBIL), creatine kinase (CK), and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH); metabolites like Methionine, 2-Oxovaleric acid, and LysoPC (16:0); and gut microbiota including Blautia wexlerae, Holdemanella biformis, Dorea sp. CAG 317, Coriobacteriaceae and Erysipelotrichaceae. Conclusion: In conclusion, the risk can be significantly reduced by directly consuming inactivated recombinant CP4-EPSPS. Therefore, in everyday life, the risk associated with consuming GM foods containing recombinant CP4-EPSPS is substantially reduced after heat treatment.

RESUMEN

This work utilizes a handheld electrospinning device to prepare a novel nanofibrous composite membrane in situ for packaging freshness. It can realize pick-and-pack and is easy to operate. The nanofibrous membrane is based on PVB as the matrix material, adding Camellia oil (CO) and ZnO-TiO2 composite nanoparticles (ZT) as the active material. The antimicrobial property of the CO and the photocatalytic activity of the nanoparticles give the material good antimicrobial and ethylene degradation functions. Meanwhile, this nanofibrous membrane has good mechanical properties, suitable moisture permeability and good optical properties. The nanofibrous membrane are suitable for both climacteric and non- climacteric fruits. Its use as a cling film extends the shelf life of strawberries by 4 days and significantly slows the ripening of small tomatoes. Therefore, this nanofibrous membrane has great potential for application in the field of fruit preservation.

RESUMEN

Chronic diabetic wounds present formidable challenges, marked by uncontrolled bacterial infections, prolonged inflammation, and impaired angiogenesis. The evolving landscape of photo-responsive antibacterial therapy holds great promise in addressing these multifaceted issues, with a particular focus on leveraging the distinctive properties of 2D heterojunction materials. In this investigation, we engineered composite sprayed hydrogels, seamlessly integrating Bi/MoS2 nano-heterojunctions. Capitalizing on the synergistic interplay between photocatalytic antibacterial and photothermal antibacterial mechanisms, the Bi/MoS2 heterojunction, guided by its localized surface plasmon resonance, demonstrated outstanding antibacterial efficacy within a mere 10-minute exposure to 808 nm near-infrared light. This accelerated sterilization both in vitro and in vivo, consequently expediting wound healing. The sprayed composite gel not only furnishes protective shielding for skin tissues but also fosters endothelial cell proliferation, vascularization, and angiogenesis. This safe and ultrafast sterilizing hydrogel presents immense potential for application in antimicrobial dressings, thereby offering a promising avenue for diabetic wound healing.

RESUMEN

The enrofloxacin hydrochloride (Enro), an anti-inflammatory drug for the animals, was loaded on the TNTs through physical absorption due to the high specific surface area and excellent surface activity of the TiO2 nanotubes. The samples were characterized by XRD, BET, TEM, TG and FTIR. The in vitro controlled release behavior at different temperatures was studied in detail. The results showed that the obtained TNTs were uniform and mainly amorphous crystal phase with a diameter of 10-15 nm and a length of 350-400 nm. By investigating the effect of the hydrothermal reaction process of the obtained TiO2 nanotubes and the drug loading frequency on the loading content of Enro drugs, the results indicated that the increasing loading frequency of the drug was available for the drug loading and the maximum loading content of drug reached to 33.28%. Enro-TNTs performed a better release profile at low temperature than at high temperature in PBS solution. The Higuchi square root models are suitable to explain the in vitro drug release behavior of Enro from Enro-TNTs.

RESUMEN

As the most commonly used additive manufacturing technology, fused deposition modeling (FDM) still faces some technical issues caused by temperature change-induced unsteady thermal stress and warping. These issues can further lead to the deformation of printed parts and even terminate the printing process. In response to these issues, this article established a numerical model of temperature field and thermal stress field for FDM by finite element modeling and "birth-death element" technique to predict the deformation of the part. What makes sense in this process is that the logic of elements sort based on ANSYS Parametric Design Language (APDL) was proposed to sort the meshed elements, which was aimed to perform FDM simulation quickly on the model. In this work, the effects of the sheets shape and infill line directions (ILDs) on the distortion during FDM were simulated and verified. From the analysis of stress field and deformation nephogram, the simulation results indicated that ILD had greater effects on the distortion. Moreover, the sheet warping became most serious when the ILD was aligned with the diagonal of the sheet. The simulation results matched well with the experimental results. Thus, the proposed method in this work can be used to optimize the printing parameters for FDM process.

RESUMEN

To promote natural waste resource utilization, a novel biocomposite, composed of waste crab shells and poly (lactic acid) matrix, was developed by combining chemical treatment and 3D printing. A crab shell powder (ISCSP) with an abundant porous structure and a high specific surface area was obtained by treatment with hydrochloric acid and sodium hydroxide. Importantly, under the optimal printing parameters determined by the finite element analysis, test samples, and porous bones were successfully printed using CSP/PLA composites by a commercial fused deposition modeling (FDM) 3D printer. The morphology, mechanical and thermal properties, antibacterial properties, and biocompatibility of the CSP/PLA composites were then assessed. Our results revealed that the tensile strength and flexural strength of the ISCSP/PLA composites reached 58.71 and 90.11 MPa, which were 28.6 % and 28.8 % higher than that of pure PLA, respectively. The glass transition and melting temperatures of the composites remained similar to those of pure PLA. Interestingly, the addition of CSP increased PLA crystallinity, which could be attributed to the nucleation effect of CSP in the system. The antibacterial activity of the PLA-1.5ESCSP composite samples against Escherichia coli (E. coli) was greater than 99 %. More importantly, the live/dead assay showed that the CSP/PLA composites possessed excellent biocompatibility. Therefore, the developed CSP/PLA biocomposites are potential feedstocks for 3D printing in bone tissue engineering and may be used as graft substitutes in reparative and reconstructive surgery. They are especially beneficial due to their superior mechanical and thermal properties, excellent antibacterial activities, and significant biocompatibility.

RESUMEN

A diabetic wound is a typical chronic wound with a long repair process and poor healing effects. It is an effective way to promote diabetic wound healing to design electrospinning nanofiber films with drug-assisted therapy, good air permeability and, a multilayer functional structure. In this paper, a diabetic wound dressing with a "sandwich-like" structure was designed. Metformin hydrochloride, loaded in the hydrophilic PVA inner layer, could effectively promote diabetic wound healing. The drug release was slowed down by osmosis. The laminate film dressing had good mechanical properties, with tensile strength and elongation at break reaching 5.91 MPa and 90.47 %, respectively, which was close to human skin. The laminate film loaded with erythromycin and puerarin in the hydrophobic PLA outer layer had good antibacterial properties. In addition, due to the high specific surface of the electrostatic spun film, it exhibited high water vapor permeability. It facilitates the gas exchange between the wound and the outside world. The cell experiments proved that the laminate film dressing had good biocompatibility. There was no toxic side effect on cell proliferation. In the diabetic animal wound model, it was shown that the closure rate of diabetic wound repair by laminate film reached 91.11 % in the second week. Our results suggest that the "sandwich-like" nanofiber film dressing could effectively promote the healing process and meet the various requirements of diabetic wound dressing as a promising candidate for future clinical application of chronic wound dressings.

RESUMEN

Bacterial and fungal contamination have become major factors in fruit spoilage and damage, posing a potential risk to human health. In this work, polylactic acid (PLA) nanofibers combined with Ag2O-hemp fibers for a good antimicrobial effect were developed and applied to antimicrobial fruit fresh-keeping packages. The results of molecular simulation calculations showed that the strength of hydrogen bonds between Ag2O and hemp fibers reached 45.522 kJ·mol-1, which proved that Ag2O and with hemp fibers formed a stable deposition. The Ag2O-hemp fibers modified electrospun polylactic acid nanofibrous composite film exhibited favorable mechanical properties. The tensile strength reached 5.23 ± 0.05 MPa and the elongation at break reached 105.56 ± 3.95 %. The obtained nanofibrous composite film has good antibacterial activity against E. coli, S. aureus, A. niger, and Penicillium, which indicated that they could effectively inhibit the growth of bacteria and fungi. The cell experiments proved that the nanofibrous composite film had good biocompatibility with a cell survival rate of 100 %. The experimental results on the fresh-keeping of red grapes showed that the PLA nanofibrous composite film modified by the Ag2O-hemp fibers could effectively prolong the spoilage time of red grapes at room temperature. Compared with the blank group, the freshness period of PLA nanofiber film modified by Ag2O-hemp fibers could be extended for more than 5 days. The hardness of 15 days (1.94 ± 0.19 × 105 Pa) was basically the same as that of 1 day (2.05 ± 0.06 × 105 Pa). The results were superior to commercially available PE preservation films. The above research results indicated that the Ag2O-hemp fibers modified PLA nanofibrous composite film had potential application prospects in the field of fruit fresh-keeping package.

RESUMEN

By immobilized on the coal fly ashes, the TiO2 nanoparticles photocatalysts were obviously improved in removing organic compounds of the contaminated water. These composite catalysts were fabricated by three different methods involving hydrothermal method, physical blending and sol-gel method. The resulting materials have been characterized by XRD, SEM and FTIR. The photocatalytic activity of these as-prepared samples was assessed by photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue (MB) aqueous solution at ambient temperature under UV-light irradiation. The experimental results indicated that TiO2 nanoparticles were tightly dispersed on the surface of spherical coal fly ash particles, where the adsorption ability of the catalysts is effectively promoted. It was found that the catalysts prepared by hydrothermal method exhibited the highest photocatalytic activity than that prepared by physical blending or sol-gel method which mainly resulted from the synergistic effect of TiO2 nanopartcles and coal fly ashes.

RESUMEN

Ag/TiO2 nanotubes with uniform distribution were successfully prepared by a hydrothermal-dipping method. The synthesized samples were characterized by XRD, TEM and FTIR, respectively. The results exhibited that the morphological structure of the TiO2 nanotubes was improved by the doping of Ag ions. The photocatalytic degradation experiment indicated that the photocatalytic activity of the Ag/TiO2 nanotubes indicated better photocatalytic activity than pure TiO2 nanotubes since silver was able to help the electron-hole separation by attracting photoelectrons. The optimal mol ration of TiO2 and AgNO3 was 25:1.

RESUMEN

In this work, a functionalized polycaprolactone (PCL) composite fiber combining calf-type I collagen (CO) and natural drug usnic acid (UA) was prepared, in which UA was used as an antibacterial agent. Through 3D near-field electrospinning, the mixed solution was prepared into PCL/CO/UA composite fibers (PCUCF), which has a well-defined perfect arrangement structure. The influence of electrospinning process parameters on fiber diameter was investigated, the optimal electrospinning parameters were determined, and the electric field simulation was conducted to verify the optimal parameters. The addition of 20% collagen made the composite fiber have good hydrophilicity and water absorption property. In the presence of PCUCF, 1% UA content significantly inhibited the growth rate of Gram-positive and negative bacteria in the plate culture. The AC-PCUCF (after crosslinking PCUCF) prepared by crosslinking collagen with genipin showed stronger mechanical properties, water absorption property, thermal stability, and drug release performance. Cell proliferation experiments showed that PCUCF and AC-PCUCF had no cytotoxicity and could promote cell proliferation and adhesion. The results show that PCL/CO/UA composite fiber has potential application prospects in biomedical dressing.

RESUMEN

Fluid bath-assisted three-dimensional (3D) printing is an innovative 3D printing strategy that extrudes liquid ink materials into a fluid bath to form various 3D configurations. Since the support bath can provide in situ support, extruded filaments are able to freely construct complex 3D structures. Meanwhile, the supporting function of the fluid bath decreases the dependence of the ink material's cross-linkability, thus broadening the material selections for biomedical applications. Fluid bath-assisted 3D printing can be divided into two subcategories: embedded 3D printing and support bath-enabled 3D printing. This review will introduce and discuss three main manufacturing processes, or stages, for these two strategies. The stages that will be discussed include preprinting, printing, and postprinting. In the preprinting stage, representative fluid bath materials are introduced and the bath material preparation methods are also discussed. In addition, the design criteria of fluid bath materials including biocompatibility, rheological properties, physical/chemical stability, hydrophilicity/hydrophobicity, and other properties are proposed in order to guide the selection and design of future fluid bath materials. For the printing stage, some key technical issues discussed in this review include filament formation mechanisms in a fluid bath, effects of nozzle movement on printed structures, and design strategies for printing paths. In the postprinting stage, some commonly used postprinting processes are introduced.
